Dragon Ball Super has had some bad animation throughout the years, but I'm sure you're all aware of that. Today myself, anime ajay and trev are gonna correct some of Super's worst artwork into the style of Tadayoshi Yamamuro all the while explaining how exactly Super was as rushed as it was.
We will be correcting some Goku's, Freeza's, Gohan and Piccolo's. I'm very excited to share this with you! This might not be Dragon ball Z but it's Dragon Ball Super perhaps how it might have looked had the circumstances been different :)

I like how you don’t try to hide the fact that you were on the “DBS bad animation is because of bad animators” bandwagon, and actually own up to your part in this reoccurring joke for like a few years. It makes me respect you even more ✊
Pride is one of the biggest reasons why so much stuff is wrong in this world. Being able to admit to having been wrong about anything is IMHO very noble and crucial to improvement, whatever it may be.
Tbh, some animators I never liked their stuff, and when this particular animator had to rush things? For me it's even worse. I despise Naoki Tate artwork and animation. That's how it is for me.
When he answers how did the production of DBS improve he says that they outsourced to a lot of external studios and all, so he pretty much completely contradicts his previous argument that more budget doesn't improve anything. Lesson givers and knowitalls always end up saying stupid stuff at some point.
Mathieu L Tate’s speed and animation are great but I agree 100% on his art being garbage. His best drawing is the UI Goku first kick frames but it’s barely recognizable. His normal art style doesn’t fit Dragonball whatsoever and it just proves that the series would’ve been far better had Takahashi been involved with it sooner, since his models follow the OLD Yamamuro style and present sharper ( and stronger) visuals. Tate’s art makes everything too damn soft and fat, it’s like he is drawing wacky One Piece characters on a Dragonball series.
Ps: One Piece’s art is great, but it wouldn’t fit Dragonball, which is far more known for sharp , muscular , and kinda serious designs.

@@adc4836 when I was a teen, I heard of an artist called "Bleedman" who also drew exclusively with a mouse. Insane patience is needed to get to an acceptable level of competency, let alone crating the level of artwork we see in this video.
Honestly, you can keep doing this as a series until you have enough frames to reanimate the whole series lol

It's ok, more than animations the biggest problem and flaw of Super is having a completely trash and anti-Dragonball, and everything related to the series and its spirit, drawing and style.

@SolarCaronte they're able to do this because many of those episodes were started on weeks in advance and finished around the time of release, which is usually how it goes in anime. What went wrong was DBS's completely ruined schedule at the start nearly crippling it. Imagine if they were able to their schedule from the start.
I like the little detail in the character select screen where Trev is drawn very detailed and with a style resembling Takahashi's work.
it's pretty sad man, starting to wish they could have had longer.

@@Aziruf Could you imagine how much better of a series this would have been if they did take longer? not only in the artwork but the story would have been done better as well. It really didn't seem like they tried to make this series GT like but that's what ended up happening at times.
It’s dumb that they felt the need to act fast. DBZ is one of the biggest animes ever, and already has a built-in audience spanning like three generations. It was already a sure bet.

The real problem with super's art, especially the pre tournament arc are the oversaturated colours and highlighted skin, not to mention the new lineart style where the facial features are simplificated for easier drawing.

nah the biggest problem was most definitely the time restraints hands down
I hate the highlighted skin. That is so horrible.
Well that was just the chosen style, the point of the video was to imagine the show as it would have looked with more time. More time wouldn't have changed a chosen artstyle and style isn't really thing that can be objectively stated as bad since it's a up to the viewer's taste. I think Jojo's style is atrocious but I also won't say the animators are bad at their jobs because they do well from a technical point of view.
Super's anime style is incredibly rigid. That's the issue. The designs aren't made with animation in mind, leading to animators having to break the models to let themselves really shine(see: Naoki Tate).
This is why the change in style in the Super Broly film was so important beyond properly updating the look of the series. Those designs, besides being pretty faithful to the manga, allow for the animators to go all out and the changes in style never look overly drastic.
Well, all that, and Super's anime had the issue of extreme crunch. And some folks somehow wanted Yuya Takahashi to animate everything by himself, pretty much begging him to go through extreme burnout.
I love the use of Megaman X series ost and sound effects in the artist select.

when i was a kid i watched some newground animation (cant remember the name now) which did crossover with sonic and megaman and it were all with dbz animations / sound effects and plot, it was wonderful to watch

Dude, besides your and your freind's talent and so on, I've become addicted to the character selection part. Using Megaman style and even the loved and hated "I won a ticket for a rag" from Marvel Vs. Capcom 2... it was awesome! New sub for sure!
Skinny Gohan was my favorite re-draw, it seemed to have the most off model "before" version and thew correction makes a huge difference.
I would love to see a full animation redrawn, even if it was a just a few seconds long, to really compare a before and after of how long it would take to improve the animation of the show. Don't blame y'all if you don't want to sink the time into it but it would be very interesting to see.
I am in love with Trev’s Takahashi correction. I just love that style so much, and to replicate it is no easy accomplishment. But Trev, if you're reading this--incredible work, man.

Ufotable has the same budget as any other Studio. It's the talent and craft of it staff that gives the anime the work on huge quality.

I still have all of it on my phone.
It must suck being an artist and having to finalize an animation knowing full well it isn't good. Inking garbage like putting lipstick on a pig. Specifically I mean this bit at 9:20. The animation itself is the problem. The movement is all wrong, it's awkward and has no weight. But instead of fixing it, the artists just had to line and color it because they had no time. It makes me uncomfortable.

The plastic look of Super never sat well with me. Hopefully that changes if the anime returns.
Hopefully it'd look more like the recent Broly movie, I might even prefer that to the 90s artstyle.
I think it'd be helpful to have a side-by-side of the original frame and the final revised artwork to more easily tell the differences apart. But otherwise, I love this series; you three are talented!

Dragon Ball Super, when it finally returns
should definitely pace how fast its gears turn
Build up a strong series of episodes done
and only then announce that the hour has come
Rather than suffering, week after week
the creators can calmly adjust and tweak
the details so closely examined by fans
who want the series to look as best as it can
So in the end, there is not much to say
throwing more money is not the way
Quality comes not from the money thrown at the page.
but from putting in hours, minutes, and days.

The episode 122 animation had always felt extremely weird with the ssj2 hairstyle for goku during his and vegeta’s fight with jiren, but the correction made it look SOO much better

Although, I'd have been more alright with the poor animation if the writing of the series was good. Unfortunately, it was pretty bad, so even the best episodes of Super are just eye candy.

Dude how much do you like Mega Man? Its soundtrack (and selection sound effect) are all over the video. Not that I’m complaining, Mega Man seriously has some of the best music in gaming, and I’d be amazed if I can find another genuine fan of the series, *especially* one that’s into Dragon Ball too!
There's a part of me that always wished that anime seasons would be produced in a way where half of the show is produced before airing, and the second half is produced in such a way that the time works out so that the last hours that animators work is the week before the airing of the finale.
But I know that such expectations really are unrealistic. The people funding shows want immediate and consistent return on their investments. Creation of story boards, and production of artwork varies in the amount of time in which it takes. Fans put immense pressure for both immediate release of content, and high expectations of quality. It's always interested me how so many art decisions in media like animation are a result of compromises to save time (Deciding to make super sayian hair blonde to make it easier for the manga artists to fill in goku's hair), so it really interested me to hear how the animators purposefully made less action orientated episodes to try to buy time. Thanks for the video, it was awesome!

The fact that the bad animation was due to time restraints speaks volumes to me. They chose to compromise quality so they could get the show to their audience faster? Huh? Db super to me was just a fat ass cash grab with no real passion or effort. They literally had to put out the broly movie to redeem the brand. Anyways awesome video as usual.cheers!

@PhOnIXR7 it’s okay bro I get it and I agree. It’s just sometimes it looked a little different. Like here’s an example. Super Vegeta VS Cell. The first part looked god like right? But then the next episode it looked completely different
