I got the Amex Platinum Card for the clout…
In today’s “Credit Reddit”, we look at a story where a guy speaks of his woes about shallowly getting the Amex Platinum card solely based upon the trappings of his friend groups, and society.
He speaks of this card being a status symbol, in which I think, a lot of folks also see it that way.
I think TH-cam is great since we can see the perspectives of all TH-camrs who have all sorts of different credit cards, and this way, you can broaden your perspective to make the best decision possible for your life, and your life situation.
I feel his woes, and agree with some of them, but ultimately, personal responsibility and research is always a factor, like with any decision in life.

So I’m active duty military and the platinum is free for us, really common for officers to get it. I never really saw it as a status symbol because pretty much all my friends have the card too

Thank you for your service. The perks are getting strained though so probably another reason why they’re tying more or the perks to spend limit. (E.g. 75k spend needed for unlimited lounge access). This will probably continue to be more common going forward.
Oh agreed 100%, get that Platinum for free is AMAZING! Honestly all of them, get an Aspire, Gold, Brilliant haha, why not!

I actually heard about the card through a coworker in 2019 before i even knew about credit. Then I applied every couple of days, wondering why I couldn't get it....good times, and so many inquiries 🤣

Last weekend, I was going through the drive-through at the local place that I get coffee at and the barista at the window was showing my Bilt Card (😂) around to her co-workers because she’d never seen it before and she liked the way it looked and how heavy it was. Does that mean that the Bilt Card has more clout than the Amex Platinum?
The metal cards look nice, I get some looks with my black Gemini MC! ✊

I have friends that have the platinum and it hurts my soul to see them use it as their card for everything! they just got it to say they have it. I feel the Platinum is now watered down and it was more prestige when it was plastic and wasn't so popular. Great vid Anthony💥

I knew about the Platty before TH-cam, but I didn't see its value until I saw a few TH-camrs explaining how they got value. Holding both Plat and Gold - I can honestly say there is some emotional high from using the cards. It's odd. It's strange. I can't justify it - but I like using them more than any other cards I have.
I was on cloud nine with my Amex Gold for about two years, I held the Amex Green alongside it for the two years too. I recently downgraded my Amex Gold to the Amex Green after canceling my original Amex Green. After realizing the overlap in rewards for restaurants in my credit profile I made some changes. I just grabbed the Amex Platinum so the cloud nine feeling will be back again ha, hope to earn some excellent travel value with the Amex Platinum! I love the looks of the Amex Green as well solid rewards earner with some excellent transit and travel categories.

My uncle got the Platinum Card in 1985 when it was still invitation only. So, yes, I saw the Platinum Card as a status symbol early on.

American Express has made the Platinum nearly ubiquitous, so I wonder will they put a card above the platinum. Another content creator said they imagined they would be a diamond card above the platinum but below the centurion black card with a $1,500 a year annual fee. That will have helicopter credits limo Rolex high-end spas. That will certainly clear out those living on a budget. Like me ;+)

@@AnthonyVenture I saw it when I was still in hospitality, but it was biz Plats they were getting reimbursed for and many of them used it for all expensed or reimbursed. Free points for them and some flew 3 times a week so they racked them up
Im sure this stuff happens all of the time. We all know there are flex boys and girls out there that do this exact same thing. Scary to think about it. I wonder how many are in financial trouble.

I think most people get the platinum because they travel a lot for work and value the lounge access where they can get work done during layovers. I don't think people get it just because they are wealthy, although, people who travel for work tend to have money. If I saw a young 20 something pull out a platinum to pay for a haircut, that tells me they're either working towards a signup bonus to pay for a trip, or they're an idiot douche bag.

Woah, this type of thinking is interesting.
While I know we are unique in terms of signing up for all the sign up bonuses possible, I’m finally starting to cringe less and less at people who have 1-3 credit cards and use them however they want. No optimization needed if you only have 1 card, and so much less to manage.
I wonder how many other people get cards for the perceived status it provides them mentally.

The first time I saw a platinum card when was I started working as server , everyone used to pay with that card , ( I Live in the Hamptons ) so I will say the platinum it’s a symbol of status , because just a few people paid with the gold card , but all this rich people they were only using the platinum, I don’t think they were working towards a welcome bonus hahaha it’s just my opinion
