- I tried DCS again in VR. Check it out: • Real Hornet Pilots Fly...
As promised, I tried out DCS using Bananimal's sweet setup. This is a two part video. Part One covers the intro, takeoff, and dropping bombs. Part two will include basic air to air, landing, and my overall thoughts on DCS.
Mondays with Mover - Episode 22
This video was intended to be fun and is NOT a serious, side-by-side comparison of DCS or any other PC sim to a real F/A-18

To answer the most commonly asked question: Yes, we had TrackIR. I used it extensively at first and didn't care for it. For this part of the video (multiplayer) I wanted to try without. I'll explain why in part two. Thanks for watching!
This would be a little closer to your reality if you did it in VR.
Yeah the Samsung Odyysey plus VR headset is on sale right now for $299 for black friday on the samsung.com website. It just came out a couple weeks ago and it's usual price is $499. With HTC vive or Oculus Rift, the experience is much better with DCS World. Try it...
you need to have a trackIR
It takes about 30 minutes for most people to get accustomed to using TrackIR, after it is properly set up and calibrated. Sorry to hear you had a negative first encounter with it. Please do give it another try (I love mine). Also, it makes the recorded video much more watch-able.

You know he's trained well because at 22:52, the camera of him in the lower left corner shows him bracing for the Gs after he says "Let's drop some bombs." and releases his bombs then pulls back on the stick. Holy shit good spotting!
About the pulling back on the stick, that's fairly obvious to do since you would go into the ground otherwise.
@@Devantejah If my argument is that he pulled back on the stick to pull up, that would be a great answer. I would love to see you fly this with VR and also the HOTAS mapped correctly for the hornet. That way, you could have an effective lookout and also not the muscle memory problems. I know no-one probably has the correct Hornet controls, but that would be awesome to see.
Semper Fi! I was at Cecil when we got the A models (enlisted). I worked in and supervised the AIMD Cal lab and worked on most of the electronics that worked on the Hornet and have calibrated all the AWM test sets (at the time). Got a NAM for fixing S3 test set no one else could in the country. Good memory's and good times.
God bless sir and may your holidays be blessed as well. O7
You should have mapped his controlls for him. I'd be honoured to have a real fighter pilot map mine for me
Thank you very much for sharing your thoughts about the sim. It's very important for us (the hardcore simmer) to understand how a real pilot thinks. It's true that the perfect tunning of the controller it's fundamental. And also that the FOV limitation is a huge problem, but with the TrackIR (for us that we get used to it) or with the VR is a valid substitute.
As someone who flies DCS World quite often, it's always fun watching a RL pilot fly my favorite sim.
This is the best content on YT imo, professionals doing awesome stuff with systems we mere humans play around with. Just like Jive Turkey and submarines. And bomb defusal guys playing ‘keep talking and nobody explodes’.
One thing that really surprised me when sitting into the hornet cockpit that is a bit lost when watching DCS or even live videos, is how small the cockpit is. Even more surprising was that when looking down, I couldn't see most of the side panel controls (I could only see the side of plane), I had to move my head down and sideways to see the APU switch for example.

I can understand the frustration of sitting down into a "custom" mapped control system. It takes a good bit of time to get used to where everything is, and then the track ir side of things takes a bit of getting used to also. Bottom line is - hopefully, you still had a lot of fun.

Just mapping all the keys for yourself is a hobby. Sitting down in someone's custom setup and learning there personal quirks is a whole nother beast
I would gladly pay to see a channel were fighter pilots recreate missions in flight sims like this. Quite fascinating. Even other eras like ww1 or 2.
In 77' I was about 12yrs old. I got to fly a T-38 simulator at Williams AFB . It was the size of fifth wheel trailer and it sat on an array of hydronic Jack's and pumps. It was hooked into massive computor that took up a warehouse. The visual Hadn't caught yet. It was crude. It took an hour to reset . I think I was first to attempt Cobra. Hit the deck supersonic. I could had spent days in that things. Thanks USAF
First, Thank you for your service, sir! Found your channel by accident, glad I did. Excited to read the books. The video was fun...thanks for sharing! From a retired Texas cop...
I used to work on C-130's. I don't know about fighters, but we had a switch on the landing gear called the touchdown relay. When the weight of the aircraft was loaded on the landing gear system, the relay was pushed, the hydraulic system pressurized the brakes, allowing for braking, and the nose steering gear was unlocked automatically.
As an A&P, I can confirm alot of large aircraft have the feature. I'm not so sure for the smaller ones
I always find it amazing the real life guys can just sort of jump into a sim and do it. Now I know the military makes extensive use of simulators, but still, this is quite impressive since this is a non motion setup. Same happens with racing drivers, they just click, while, with 'normal people', it can take up to 3 months of fairly intensive practise to really get a sense of what the simulated vehicle is doing through the cues the game provides (instead of actual feedback to the body) and get to competitive laptimes.
Personally, I had to give up on flight simulators as they got more realistic. In real life I'm unable to fly a coördinated turn (even though I've been allowed more practise at it than probably anyone not actually taking flying lessons) and I just can't do it in modern sims either. Of course I could have dialed down the realism, but that just isn't why I'm into simulators.
It's really like when you watch a cowboy who ain't ridden in years sit right back down in the same saddle on the same horse. Or when you see a guy who drove a 69 Camaro sit back down in his original Camaro after it was restored and everything just feels right. It's so nice to see.

this would be an AWESOME simulator. 10 years ago... nothing breaks immersion like looking left and right with a rocker hat on your joystick while looking straight ahead at a screen. VR has come a long way.
don't even need VR. attach a thing to your headset and it'll automatically look where you look IRL.
This game can use VR and track ir.
Get this man back in the plane with a VR headset! XD
or atleast trackir
I know this is from a long time ago, but I used to work on the TACAN system from F-18's. I obviously know what it does, but I didn't know that pilots used it in the fashion displayed at about 17:00. Super to cool to see it actually work in the way I expected. I'm just getting in to flight sim's and my mind is completely blown.
At least one thing is sure : I've heard that in case of an emergency (if both pilots are unable to fly, for example), it is possible to pick a passenger in the plane and ask him to take place in the cockpit, follow the control tower instructions, and land the plane. In that very special case (hopefully, it never happened, to my knowledge), I would choose a DCS player or a Flight simulator player over a doctor, lawyer, scientist or any other intellectual and respectful person.
(sorry for the mistakes, if you find any)... English is not my native language.

Here it is at last. That's a feast for most simmers out there. Really nice setup if only Bananimal had head tracking Mover could have immersed in better.
We did use track IR at first actually. I didn't like it. I'll explain more in part two.
@@CWLemoine Yup, sorry I was so eager to note that, I didn't wait for the end of the video. That's the thing about sims, it's hard to adapt to a different setup (switches, bindings, views etc) even for an experienced simmer let alone getting the sense of head tracking. However you did so great in the first try that you fed us the feeling that we have something as close as possible to the real thing today. Much Appreciated, Thank You.
@Southern Fun I utilize Track IR as well in Arma as well as DCS, and yeah, it took me what felt like literally hours to dial in all of the curves, the slight dead zone that you might want to prevent your view from bobbling as your head does, which you don't notice, because your eyes naturally compensate for it. But when your head bobs and track IR is allowed to translate those slight movements, it's a bit unsettling. Once I dialed in my Track IR, I can't fly without it anymore. Especially helicopters. I don't even like operating on infantry side without it. But I could never effectively dog-fight with a locked forward view or having to use hat-switch to look about. With Track IR it made a world of difference, but it does take a bit of experimenting to dial it in how you like it, especially with where the camera is located as it plays a big role in how much leeway you have to move your head before it loses tracking.
“I don’t know! I don’t care! I’ve got afterburner!” This whole video went exactly how I envisioned it lmao. Games are getting terrifyingly realistic, but they still only go to a certain point. Love the non disclosure agreement at the beginning. Just a little bit of flexing on us legs XD

Should try it with head tracking or VR!
Yeah, there was a cap on the desk with TrakIR reflectors....
VR DCS is pathetic, seriously unoptimized, one screen is slightly more latent than the other meaning as you fly past objects you see a "ghost" of each object (you essentially see double) and it makes you feel very sick! (Tested on i7 8700k and GTX 1080ti with 32gb RAM)
Tobii eye tracker would be great
@@MrPhantom453 I didn't care for TrackIR reflectors either. TrackIR Pro is much better imo.
@@Jimbotheone Agree.
And that's exactly why I assign my controls as close to real as possible. Sure PC config makes you have extras for trackIR and voice comms etc. But everything in the HOTAS should preferably be as it is IRL.
Regarding controls sensivity etc. it's also a user preference thing but everything is adjustable with curves in the game and physically the warthog stick center mounted with an extension should be much closer to real deal minus the physical forces.
Would really love to see more of DCS after you get a custom setup with everything tuned right...
I agree, honestly. If i'm using the HOTAS of an actual aircraft and can do the HOTAS 1:1, I will set it up 1:1.I did that for this aircraft for as close as I can while having the HOTAS Warthog
Awesome to see you fly DCS! I totally agree with the mapping problem. I have the warthog HOTAS as well but as a centerstick and with an improved base unit (better gimbal and extended length).
I feel like to get the most out of the sim, when you have such a beast setup as he does (kudos to him for letting you use his setup!! :) ), you need to map ALL the controlls, or at least the HOTAS, as close as possible to the actual layout in the Hornet. The NATOPS with this info in it is available online for free , which I would recommend for the next time you try DCS.
Yep. I imported the ED defaults for the F-18. The only two buttons I changed were the paddle as a modifier and the pinky switch for the rearm refuel pop-up. Everything else was bone stock ED profile. The throttle issue is prevalent in the F-18 module as it ships from ED. I hope they can provide more linearity to throttle input. As it is by default, all the power is in the last 1/8" of throttle input to full mil power as C.W. discovered as well.
@@Bananimal65 I have a custom curve which fixed this throttle axis issue, which I can send you if you're interested. This works so the AB detent matches ingame.
The problem is as far as I understand (referring to natops again, yes im a nerd..) , that the actual F-18 throttle IRL moves further back when you are on the ground but gets limited when weight on wheels is removed, to prevent accidental movement into the cutof.
This translates into a wierd non linear axis on the default settings in DCS.
@@JacobGramtorp Thanks for the offer. I've got the detent flipped and the curve adjusted to get 100% mil power on the detent. I can takeoff from the carrier without afterburner. The problem with the hornet is, all of the power is in the last 5% of throttle up to mil power.
I ended up using the Warthog layout on the throttle grip. The defaults from ED just felt off. Then I looked at it and realized the Warthog layout matches up pretty well with the Hornet. well, at least on the throttle....lol
@@JacobGramtorp Preciate the offer on the setup. I've got the burner detent installed and set a curve for that. Just can't smooth out the power delivery at the top of MIL.

A Wii Steering remote works just as well
I feel like much of the issues you've experienced relating to slewing the pilot's view would be resolved in VR where you actually have depth of field and you have a 360 degree vision. It's unfortunate that you weren't able to get TrackIR to behave though. I agree that TrackIR is a pain to fiddle with at first, because you have to manually calibrate it for the individual pilot by editing the profiles, but it's great once you get it working.
I think it behaved like it was supposed to for the most part. I just didn't like it. I used it again later when we were just goofing off with other planes.
22:51 I love how instinctively set your head back for sustaining Gs ❤️
@C.W. Lemoine - When you commented about the sensitive on nosewheel steering, I think that was because NWS HI was selected, instead of NWS. I'm sure you probably knew that but just giving a hint from my very limited experience with this sim (and not being a pilot prior to that). Awesome video and despite being from another country, I thank you for your service.
I am a bit of an old-school flight simer when I was a teenager, going thru EF2000 to Jane's USAF to FS2002...etc. I always thought the control inputs were a major limitation from being a truly realistic sim. I had the opportunity to do basic maneuvers in a Cessna 172 and indeed the controls on the real plane gives a lot more feedback.
By comparison, I believe racing sims have drastically improved over the years. The controls you experience from a gaming steering wheel is 80-90% same you feel on an actual race car.
EF2000 thats a really good one, sadly it runs bad in todays machines. I really liked novalogics mig 29

DCS has been my main hobby for the last three years. If you found TrackIR unbearable, your not alone, it takes a lot of getting used to, Most people don't realize how often they move their head when they are sitting still, so they end up with a lot of unintended inputs from the device. On top of that you have the non linear head movement in game compared to how much you move your head IRL. You should try VR at some point, I have flown in DCS with two retired hornet drivers who fly VR and swear by the immersion, they catch themselves doing silly things from muscle memory like trying to rest their hands on the canopy rail when they are refueling on the deck. If this is something you decided to pick up and run with, I hope you will pay the 104th Phoenix server a visit, We have been a staple in the community of DCS for over 10 years, and would be happy to have the opportunity to fly with, or against you. We primarily focus on the air to air aspect of DCS.
if you set it up correctly and use the freeze and reset buttons often you can get it to work pretty well, but a VR headset will be far better. If only they were able to produce an image without the low res screen door effect.
I would like to note TrackIR requires calibration and setting curves to help you get the right rates of movement. I'm new to it myself, but the more I use it the more I love it.

It is weird you have 40k subs, I believe this channel deserves more, at least 100k-300k subs. But probably in 3-4 years it will already surpass a million :D

I think you might also very much enjoy this game with a virtual reality headset on, so your head moves inside the cockpit as your head moves in real life, just like in a real plane!
but aside from that, this was interresting. cant wait for more. i love it when pilot try DCs and give their opinion, its good for the game, and its interresting for us watchers. Keep it up :)
Plenty of videos on my channel of me doing just that. 👍
Really nice setup BUT it never ceases to amaze me that people with these wonderful setups still put their monitor screens almost two metres away from their head position. That screen needs to be right where the wheel unit is for a more realistic experience. WHY? because the monitor screen represents "your" head area in the game, you don't drive your car from the back seat so why try and drive or fly from the back seat in a simulator? I use TrackIR and that works more favorably with the monitor screen as close as I can possibly get it and to help with a more realistic approach I bought a curved screen. I'm also into Truck simulation and Aircraft simulation. Just remember, you need to be up close and personable with that cockpit as you would in the real world or it just doesn't work, not even with TrackIR.
Actually when viewing a monitor and not a television, your eyes should rest at the top edge of the screen when viewing
@@twobunz6594 What drugs are you on??
I agree completely however, I ran an arms length monitor setup for about a year and had bad headaches when on the computer for long amounts of time. As much as I'd love to be able to read text without zooming in, when I'm on the computer for 7 hours straight it's painful unless my monitors are 2 meters away.
What Im trying to elaborate is your neck should not have to tilt at any angle when viewing the middle of the screen and the top edge of your monitor should come resting where your natural line of sight. So you dont get a kink in your neck.
Also FOV options in the settings menu can help you get immersed without making your eyeballs bleed.
