Not true in the slightest. Every single PROFESSIONAL bass player can play Portrait of Tracy. It is a bass guitar standard used a baseline to gauge a bass players basic skills. Look it up. It’s the truth. You are so uninformed and naive.
@@caprise-music6722I don't think Buddhist temples have bands, they're not places of worship in the same sense Christian churches are. But that doesn't mean an expoerienced bass player couldn't join one and do this video later
@@yukisugahara2259 Hey have you tried playing the harmonic slightly above or below where you normally play the harmonic? Some of the harmonics ring much clearer in spots that you don't normally think a harmonic would sound.

Brother, what "few mistakes," are you talking about!? It was excellent. Now I`ve got to learn it too! Great playing and feel, those harmonics 👍🏼, wonderful video, many thanks for sharing! The rig reminds me of the 4x10 + 1x15 @mpeg rig I used to have (and miss a bit)
You are a joy to listen to. The answer to your question - technique - setup of bass - equipment - Acoustic 360 - 361PP Combo (Bass Amplifier) - Pastorius used the "Variamp" EQ (equalization) controls on his two Acoustic 360 amplifiers (made by the Acoustic Control Corporation) to boost the midrange frequencies, thus accentuating the natural growling tone of his fretless passive Fender Jazz Bass and roundwound string combination. Even the type of cable and length of cable will impact on the tone by acting s a filter..
Thank you very much for your comment and advise😎👍 I'm glad to know that there are many bass guitar enthusiast in the world who knows a lot of staffs!! I'm still a baby in the bass world... Thank you!
Hey, I tried a compressor. It does the trick without blowing out the low E. I think an EQ of some sort boosting the highs might be a good addition. I guess I could add more treble on the amp. However, it might over emphasize the other harmonics in the piece. I think the new pod express for bass would be great for this. It has eq, compression and distortion all three. I think a clever bassist could come up with a super patch on the Pod Express that would be perfect for this piece, including the end harmonics. No, I don't work for Line 6. :P I guess it is time for me to spend some more money.
Your story about Robert Trujillo makes me respect him a bit more. You were in the right place to sound the harmonics. I suspect the lack of clarity comes from not having any smaller speakers in your rig. Might be eq or strings also. I know on flat wounds, your harmonic options are a lot fewer. Could be EQ in your rig causing the difficulty in hearing the highest harmonics. Thanks for bringing a little bit of Jaco back into the light.
Thank you for your comment and tips👍👍 I think I need to work on EQ for this piece... Jaco is the one who lighted my life so this is my tribute to him🙏🙏
I believe Jaco didn't play this song on a fretless, which makes a surprising amount of difference. The harp/fretted harmonics can ring louder and more clearly, the intonation is less of a challenge, etc.
There are videos of him playing it on a fretless. Here's one: th-cam.com/video/25DXcFg1TFo/w-d-xo.html This was the first one that came up for Portrait of Tracy. Interestingly, he played part of the harmonics he used in Okonkole y Trompa on the Jaco album. Also, I never have any problems with harmonics on my fretless bass. If I can play it on a fretted bass, I can play it on the fretless. The challenge on the fretless comes from having to align the harmonic finger exactly right while playing the actual bass note with proper intonation. You can kind of cheat if you don't have the reach or the stretch by playing the harmonics and then jumping to the note. I think Jaco sometimes did that for ease as well as for artistic reasons.@@yukisugahara2259
