@@kohl1999 He was remarkably normal given his incredibly talents. Anything he did, he excelled at. Yet his focus was joy, nothing even close to ego. Everyone knew he was unique and special, but could not have guessed then the worldwide fame that awaited.

I feel that so much. I got into music in the late 90s and quickly became a Jaco freak... then I bought "Hejira" in my early 20s and to this day I don't know if anything showcases Jaco's soulful side than that record. Also, legend has it that most of Hejira was recorded without bass with exception of some Max Bennett pieces. Apparently he recorded "Refuge of the Road" to an already mastered track. I hear that song and even though I'm a bit of a Chicago tough guy I'm moved to the core: it feels like perfection.

Saw Jaco 1978 with Weather Report. He did a 20 minute solo and it wasn't boring for one moment. I recall it ended with him on one side of the stage and his bass on the other and it was making some strange noises without him playing it. I think he was hitting pedals or something. Unusual! Drums, bass and guitar, does it get any better than this???
My favorite live act has always been a trio. There's only so much you can get away with (musically) within the limits of a three piece band. And that's what makes it so much fun.
At least that's always been my personal experience.
I suppose as a drummer behind Jaco and Frank, you probably got lost in the shuffle at times. Be that as it may, exceptional chops man. People often take the drummer for granted, but a good solid drummer is harder to find then one might think. Sure, there's lot's of guys out there who came keep a beat, but just a handful are able to play so smoothly in the pocket, they're almost machines. And as (artificial) A.I. drummers are getting harder to tell from the real thing, I appreciate and prefer the real deal every time.
    Thanks for this. ❤

I met Jaco a couple of times in NYC a year or so before this and then right before the end. They weren't very happy situations so I tend not to share about it on TH-cam. Mary Pastorius says she gets upset when she sees and hears unflattering stories about that time so out of respect it's best to just remember the gift that Jaco shared with the world. I'll say this though, Jaco had the strongest handshake I've ever felt from anybody. Scary strong. Like a vice. Wish he was still with us.

I'm a guitar player but I've found that I really don't like listening to guitar players. I use to enjoy going to see Jaco play when Hiram would play with him. Those 2 were great together and such characters. Saw them at Seventh Avenue south and sometimes at 55 Bar where Mike Stern would have Jaco sit in too. I took Bass lessons with Jeff Andrews and he said he told Mike he felt they should do more to try to help Jaco as Jaco had been very generous to them when he had money but Mike was like what can you do to help someone who doesn't want to get clean? I think Jaco even drove Stern to rehab. There's a funny story about it in the Milkowski book.

Super fine point: what Jaco looses in sound from a smaller scale neck in gained in ever so slightly more relaxed execution. On his more ambitious lines he executes flawlessly. In some situations it would have been great to hear him on an axe like this. Notice he never takes the big linear solo…stays in pocket as a bass player.

Right. True for any musician, right? Heard him a lot in all kinds of situations and conditions. Do you notice how he’s even more accurate and even on the stretch lines with the smaller scale neck. Of course the shorter string length produces less power.

In the hard bipolar years, he became erratic, but by Christ he never lost it. You don’t lose that kind of thing. If you listen to those late trio gigs, it isn’t Weather Report but just occasionally with Hiram Bullock/Bireli he goes through the roof. Him and Hendrix, for me.
