I just played this song to my 102 year old English mum as she is passing over. I am in NSW Austrlia now & she is in Ontario Canada but came over from England at the age of 18 on the first battle ship loaded up with WAR BRIDES in January of WW2. This song was written about her ancestor on her maternal side Osborne...bonnie prince Charlie I believe it was. Strangely enough in L.A. of all places in the 80's I met twin Scottish brothers who were musicians & knew this song when I asked them. As it turns out they are the decendents of those who ferried this anscestor of mine away from being beheaded by the British to the safety of the Isle of Skye. This life is strange. isn't it? adendum....In KIngston Ontario when I was a child I dragged an MP Flora MacDonald up to our3rd floor attic of the 1800's house my mother is passing in now....to see a very large old old charcoal portrait of a young man hiding out in a tree stump holding a woman in a long period dress with bonnet on's hand in gratitude for the bread she held in her apron & was offering the young man while she looked over her shoulder. Not sure how my family happened to have this amazing historical piece of art but when Flora MacDonald the MP saw this she said...OMG the woman who is feeding Bonnie Prince Charlie our ancestor was a MacDonald one of hers. So I met 2 familes that knew our family back in that day. Perhaps we DO travel in soul groups until the end of each epoch of time which we are conculding another as we speak. God bless us all. Just a story I thought was of interest.
The history behind this song is so amazing this is the song of Flora MacDonald who risked everything after the battle of Culloden to help bonnie prince Charlie escape to Skye. If this is the first you have heard of here I highly recommend looking her up she is not only a hero for Scotland but for all women around the world.
"The Skye Boat Song" is a traditional Scottish folk song that tells the story of Bonnie Prince Charlie's escape from Scotland to the Isle of Skye after the Battle of Culloden in 1746. The song is believed to have been written in the early 19th century by Sir Harold Boulton, with lyrics that were set to a traditional melody. Verse 1: Speed, bonnie boat, like a bird on the wing, Onward! the sailors cry; Carry the lad that's born to be King Over the sea to Skye. The first verse sets the scene for the rest of the song. The "bonnie boat" is urged to sail quickly, with the sailors calling out to move forward. The reference to the "lad that's born to be King" refers to Bonnie Prince Charlie, who was the rightful heir to the throne of Scotland and had been defeated in battle. The destination is the Isle of Skye, which is where he sought refuge after the battle. Verse 2: Loud the winds howl, loud the waves roar, Thunderclaps rend the air; Baffled, our foes stand by the shore, Follow they will not dare. The second verse describes the difficult conditions that the boat and its passengers must face. The winds and waves are fierce, and thunder echoes through the air. Despite this, the "foes" who seek to capture Bonnie Prince Charlie remain on the shore, afraid to follow the boat into the rough waters. Chorus: Speed, bonnie boat, like a bird on the wing, Onward! the sailors cry; Carry the lad that's born to be King Over the sea to Skye. The chorus repeats the opening verse, with the sailors once again urging the boat to move forward and take the prince to safety on the Isle of Skye. Verse 3: Though the waves leap, soft shall ye sleep, Ocean's a royal bed. Rocked in the deep, Flora will keep Watch by your weary head. The third verse offers a bit of comfort to the prince, who is described as being able to sleep peacefully despite the tumultuous conditions. The ocean is compared to a "royal bed" that rocks the prince to sleep, and Flora, a character who is believed to have helped him escape, is described as watching over him as he rests. Verse 4: Many's the lad fought on that day, Well the Claymore could wield, When the night came, silently lay Dead on Culloden field. The fourth verse reflects on the tragedy of the Battle of Culloden, in which many men fought and died for their cause. The Claymore, a type of sword used by Scottish warriors, is mentioned as a symbol of their bravery and skill. The final line refers to the aftermath of the battle, with many of the soldiers who fought and lost their lives lying silently on the field. Verse 5: Burned are our homes, exile and death, Scattered the loyal men; Yet ere the sword cool in the sheath Charlie will come again. The final verse speaks of the devastation that was wrought upon Scotland after the battle. Homes were burned, and loyal men were scattered or killed. However, the verse ends on a hopeful note, with the belief that Bonnie Prince Charlie will return and reclaim his throne. This line reflects the enduring hope and loyalty that many Scots felt towards their rightful ruler, even in the face of defeat and hardship. Verse: Sing me a song of a lass that is gone Say, could that lass be I? Merry of soul she sailed on a day Over the sea to Skye. This verse serves as a sort of introduction to the story that the song tells. It speaks of a "lass" who has left and sailed over the sea to Skye, and asks if she could be the one the song is about. The reference to the "lass" is believed to be a metaphor for Bonnie Prince Charlie, who was often referred to as "The Young Pretender" and who disguised himself as a woman to escape after the Battle of Culloden. The verse sets up the story of the prince's escape and sets the tone for the rest of the song.
I appreciate it a lot. I can understand more of the meaning of this song. I hadn’t known any of Scottish Background before. But when I started to watch the Outlander on Netflix. My heart was broken when I knew about story of the battle of Culloden. I do still feel sorry fot them until now.
Speed bonnie boat like a bird on the wing Onward the sailors cry Carry the lad that's born to be king Over the sea to Skye Loud the wind howls Loud the waves roar Thunderclaps rend the air Baffled our foes Stand by the shore Follow they will not dare. Speed bonnie boat like a bird on the wing Onward the sailors cry Carry the lad that's born to be king Over the sea to Skye Many's the lad fought on that day Well the claymore did wield When the night came Silently lain Dead on Culloden field Speed bonnie boat like a bird on the wing Onward the sailors cry Carry the lad that's born to be king Over the sea to Skye Though the waves heave Soft will ye sleep Ocean's a royal bed Rocked in the deep Flora will keep Watch by your weary head Speed bonnie boat like a bird on the wing Onward the sailors cry. I haven't heard this song for 51 years, and it's made a tear run down my cheek 😢 My Nan used to sing this to me whilst I sat on her knee. She sadly passed away when i was 16. I'm 56 now and a grandad to four amazing little people. Take care, and thank you for bringing back such lovely memories to me. Ian 🙏
Love this version. She has such a beautiful voice. My 4x Great-grandfather was an officer in the Glengarry regiment along with his brother . He survived Culloden and then fled to Canada.
Walking long distance in Belgium, many years ago, I passed two men in kilts, walking with silent bagpipes, and asked, during the passing, if they wouldn't play "The Skye Boat Song"? I couldn't imagine that with those, they didn't know this tune! It took a little time walking on, before I heard the bags being blown to function, and then the start of this immortal and beautiful song! Finn. Denmark
In honor of the three hundred men from Clan MacIntosh who fought for bonnie Prince Charlie at Culloden. I am descended from Sept Glen of Clan MacIntosh on my maternal great grandfather's side of the family. And never shall I forget!!!
I love this one, and this version has inspired me to start writing more traditional Scottish love songs myself. As a songwriter in the North of Scotland, this is my kind of scenery!
Such a beautiful soft voice yet hits with the pride of the highlands. I love the songs of my people. Thank you Ella Roberts for bringing a sensational take on this historic melody
My mother sang this to me when I was a child. Now 70 years later that same lady who I love so dearly is very very ill and approaching her final days. I’ll remind my mum how much I love her by playing this at here funeral some day....love you so much Mum.
You are so right Scotland is so magical and beautiful. I was blessed at the age of 19 that I got to go over there to Aberdeen Scotland and I was Nanny to my aunt's three kids. I'm 60 now. I will never forget the beauty I love all the castles. We visit london. And Paris my ancestors are actually from Europe. We have more
Some say you will return to glory - have you ever not been glorious Scotland! This song is beautiful and music has the ability to remind people about history and it's injustice, in a peaceful and meaningful way: Thankyou.
My kith and kin fell at Culloden. My ancestors fought at the battle of Preston. Captured and put on trial, acquitted for lack of evidence, (no one would testify against them, so honourable were they) my family fled to the Royal court of good King James. One of our family became tutor to Bonnie Prince Charlie and one of the wives became lady in waiting to Queen Mary of Modena. This song is an agony and a joy to all of my blood. What could have been. so near and yet so far. Thank you Ella - you call to all of us. Rev Dev xxx
I wish I could go to Scotland and never leave. My family is from isle of skye, and Aberdeenshire. I'm in America now. They came hére in the 1600s. I feel á deep connection to Scotland and Norway and Iceland. All places my family is from.
Dunvegan!!!! I'm proud of my auld and true Scots heritage. There's Irish and Italian in there too but I was born and bred in my bonny home🏴🏴🏴🏴I couldn't love it more 💙💙💙💙
My wife and I would play this for our son while he was still in utero. He would kick and move when he heard it. He is now 7 weeks old and this still will calm him down and usually make him sleep. We love this rendition. Thank you!
Christ this is so breathtakingly beautiful. I have a wee bit of Scottish blood in my veins (Great great grandmother was full Scots) but I'm a born and bred New Zealander. Still - that little bit of connection is a proud one. Beautiful wild country with a rich history, built on the back of it's Highland warriors. You Scots will always hold a special place in my heart.
Big fan of Outlander, but this takes the song to a new level. Needless to say this most beautiful woman and voice influenced that. The red hair and green eyes are just stunning. Wow!
@@rosierennie5867 While you're not wrong about this being the original, the composer for Outlander didn't even rewrite the lyrics himself. He stole a second set of lyrics that were written by a poet named Robert Louis Stevenson decades after the original version. All the composer did was change the "lad" to "lass" and omit a verse that was difficult to modernize.
@@elanorthefair1091 that's really cool and I didn't actual know that even though I am a Skye man myself! I wonder why RLS changed it? Possibly the changed attitude to the Jacobite campaign or maybe he just liked the tube and wanted a less political song to put with it??
Half of my DNA 🧬 is Scots. You can feel this song all the way through your heart and soul. It brings tears 😢 and strong feelings of pride because the Scots are a strong people who’ve been pushed down so many times over the centuries yet, you can never take the pride and fight out of them. It doesn’t matter whether they live in that beautiful country, or their ancestors did. Whether it’s Celtic or not, I don’t know 🤷🏼♀️ But, I know you can feel it deep inside. 🏴❤️
Yes,, and those feelings will not be denied. I have no English blood in me, 10 years ago UK moved us across the border from Northumbria to Scotland, my father was an English Jacobite, my mother an Irish Jacobite . My 3 children are raised as Jacobites as their children will be. You can kill the body but never the spirit. The King across the sea will return. Deus Volt es!
I'm Puerto Rican with Scottish ancestry which is real apparent when one sees my mom's blue eyes and red hair. I loved connecting to this part of me in this song. Beautiful song.
I am a descendant of The House of Stuart. My family left for America in the 1700's and fought the Red Coats again in the Revolutionary War. This song brings me to tears but we are still standing proudly on our feet. Alba Gu Brath!!
For me, as a Szekler-Hungarian, Scotland’s and Ireland’s history has always been close to my heart. I also have a deep affinity to the landscape, music, and literature of these two. Can’t remember where I heard it the first time, but this melody (the first two lines) stuck in my head so much so that I used it as a lullaby with both my kids. And now I found the whole song, incl. its story.
My MacPhersons died at Culloden and also hid Bonnie Prince In the isle of Skye until the French came to rescue him. My Clan Chief lost all his Estates and hid in Skye caves for 9 years - according ago Robert lewis Stevenson
My great-great grandfather fought for Canada in the Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders regiment during WW1. Not sure how old you are if your great-great grandfather lived 200 years earlier.
Salutations my Celtic sister from Australia! Beautiful song! My daughter bears the name of the Isle of Skye off the Northeast coast of Scotland. Great job keeping our Celtic culture thriving!
This song touches the soul of all Catholics who long for the reunion of Altar and Throne, not just of Bonnie Prince Charlie but all those venerable monarchs who built Europe.
Some songs, even if they are beautiful, we listen to it today and we forget after a while, but other songs, like this remains engraved in our hearts all our life.
Happy for you listen try visiting a forest when you kid is born . When my grandfather was alive forest for me where the best. Maybe he or she might like the outdoors do You like the idea
Ella Roberts is gorgeous and she is more talented than everyone in hollywood producing music at the moment. Nothing but raw beautiful talent. I appreciate her! Good for you Ella!
I’m Scottish with a touch of Irish on my father’s side and Scottish on my mother’s side. I’m first generation American and second out of Scotland. My mother was born in northern England. I’m also in the south, but I’m from the southeast. SC to be precise.
I am putting my new puppy to sleep. She is sick at the moment and has been for a while. I hope she is okay. This song is very calming and she falls straight asleep while listening. Through my childhood I have heard this song. I was born in Edinburgh and lived in a small town in Fife. Thank you for this amazing cover. Its so calming but the verses are so powerful!
Speed, bonnie boat, like a bird on the wing, Onward! the sailors cry; Carry the lad that's born to be King Over the sea to Skye. Loud the winds howl, loud the waves roar, Thunderclaps rend the air; Baffled, our foes stand by the shore, Follow they will not dare. [Chorus] Many's the lad fought on that day, Well the claymore did wield, When the night came, silently lay Dead on Culloden field. [Chorus] Though the waves heave, soft will he sleep, Ocean's a royal bed. Rock'd in the deep Flora will keep Watch by your weary head. [Chorus]
My maternal grandmother came from the McMillan clan, whose clan was recognised for their "succor" help given to Bonnie Prince Charlie during the Jacobite Rebellions, the song pulls goosebumps for me
Was in Scotland 2 years ago and our tour guide was a history buff and proud Scotchman. Went to Cluodien. It was a strange feeling to be walking across the battlefield. Also visited Skye and went on the Jacobite train to Fort William. This beautiful version of this song brings back many memories.
3:23 Flora Macdonald is famous for helping Bonnie Prince Charlie escape from Scotland after the defeat of the Jacobites at the Battle of Culloden in 1746.........what a stunning performance by red haired Ella.....best version of this song you will ever hear!
I read this story when I was twelve years aged, in the early 70's. Flora disguised the prince like a woman, and he became a supposed maidservant named 'Betty Burke'. In the same book it was told Catherine Douglas 'Kate Barlass' and her amazing gest. Does exist any song about this another scottish heroine?
I'm 5th generation Scottish American. My family is of Clan Hay. My grandfather passed away before I could really get into our family roots. I love Scotland and listening to these songs just heals my soul.
This song makes me think of my late Lady because she was from the Scottish town of Blantyre. I've never been to Scotland, but I adore it from pictures and movies and the way she was talking about her country. Beautiful song and music.
The song is actually from history. We had to learn to play it when we were 9 years old on the recorder. After the English (and vichy Scots) defeated the Jacobites on Culloden Field - Flora MacDonald hasted Bonnie Prince Charlie away. She dressed him up to look like her maid and got in the boat leaving Scotland. It was dangerous for the prince to remain in Scotland and had to flee because the invaders wanted to murder him. It is a sad time in our history.
I was born in Scotland (Dumfries), but came here to Australia at the age of 4. And here I am now, still in Australia, aged 58, listening to this beautiful music from my homeland, and yes, I admit it, experiencing some very strong emotions. I guess we never let go of our heritage. JD
there is a draw to Scotland, a place with so much fierce pride and love of country. I think most of us, even those who are not Scottish think it should have been left alone to its own rule. This song makes me cry. I might just have a bit of Scott in me, my hair was Auburn and my son has auburn hair also and his beard is red. :)
I am from méxico and i watched outlander!! And i fall in love! I love scotland! What a místical land. And i hate england! Jajajaj Sorry for My english!
Heritage is in the blood, I feel the Celtic so strong, stronger than the half Anglo-Saxon. It can be healed and purified, ask if you want to know more :) I live in England, have always felt Scots/Welsh. Bless you so far away but you can connect with the land deep inside. My daughter is in Melbourne, pregnant for 1st time, in these terrible fascist lockdown times in Victoria. Bless us all, the Light has won :0 x
My mother used to sing and hum this as a lullaby for my brothers and I. I loved this song before I even knew what it was called. I only found out when I had my own children years later, what it was called! I used to sing it to my children and my father would quip, Oh god off to bloody Skye AGAIN!
Yesterday I was searching for something entirely different and discovered Ella's music. Her singing this song and the video are so beautiful, I've had this on loop and subscribed. Looking forward to her other videos!

My great, great grandmother Wildashe immigrated from Scotland to Canada as a widower with 5 children. Only just beginning my journey of discovering my Scottish heritage. Seems well have a little Scot in us 😊
Another song that we sang as children in Australia and my husband has a Scottish grandmother. We are all proud of our ancestry no matter what it is. This girl has a beautiful voice 🇳🇿🇳🇿
Its about the Jacobite rebellion. Bonnie Prince Charlie raised the rebellion in the Highlands of Scotland to reclaim the throne for the Stuarts. He won a number of victories but his army was defeated at the Battle of Culloden, he had to flee, Flora MacDonald is the one that took him over to the Isle of Skye. The aftermath was brutal, the clans were crushed, the language was banned, tartan was banned and it ignited the Highland clearances where the people who had lived on the land for thousands of years were forced into migrating to the new world.
Is it possible to be homesick for a home you've only seen in photographs? My family is from Ayre, but I feel the call of home every time I hear the pipes.
She is beautiful and has a beautiful voice I was raised in Scotland and know the historical truth and this song means so much to grafiares bobby love all the fans xx
The way you have sung this makes me think of the beautiful, golden friendships I have that have lasted more than 40 years through time and distance. We are come close to our golden years and walking in those fields of gold.
we are given these songs down thru. marrow from the Ancients This song was dedicated to my son on the event of his death from Fentanyl. It's from Scotland- Gordon. This is the modern version of those ancient soothing sounds. deepest respect for the art you carry, Miss .
I'm mostly Irish and Scottish and I just have such a longing for my ancestors homeland. I don't know what it is but I just want to return somewhere I haven't been so bad.
This music makes me so proud of my ancestors what they sacrificed for me, the isles of the sea that they called home, the Lord looked upon it and declared that it was good.
Same; my school choir sang it at parents' night when I was in fourth grade 20 years ago, with the chorus sung by the whole choir and the verses were solos.
I'm not Scottish but this song touches me to my soul. Like a remembrance of another time another life.
That's how it gets to me!
For me too
Yes me too I was Irish my few times my past life
me too.it's just a special feeling,isnat?

I have a Flora McDonald in my family tree. I think it might be her.
I went to her grave on the Isle of Skye and paid my respects
Paterson castle
Thanks for this! I'm teaching this song to a young voice student of mine, and was wondering who Flora is. :)
My father is a Scottish Native, came to Australia at 17, hailing from Perthshire. Thank you Ella for the lovely music ❤️
well i'm a true scots through and through and i love that song
There's just something so magical about Scotland!
No nation I would rather belong to🏴
Since my ancestors came from there, I have to agree!
Our music is mostly sad, about all that has been lost.
The North Atlantic have a habit of making special kinds of People.
It is a mystical place in OUR AUSTRALIAN DREAMTIME
I’m an American of Scottish descent. This song makes me think of my ancestors roaming through the Highlands.🏴🇺🇸
I hope scotland stays scottish.. and preserve their culture and native music
Only with the preservation of the music.
My spirit and my heart belong to Scotland, beautiful song!
Beautiful, poignant, rich with feeling, healing, and hope. Love this song. I play it for my seniors sometimes.
Verse 1:
Speed, bonnie boat, like a bird on the wing,
Onward! the sailors cry;
Carry the lad that's born to be King
Over the sea to Skye.
Verse 2:
Loud the winds howl, loud the waves roar,
Thunderclaps rend the air;
Baffled, our foes stand by the shore,
Follow they will not dare.
The second verse describes the difficult conditions that the boat and its passengers must face. The winds and waves are fierce, and thunder echoes through the air. Despite this, the "foes" who seek to capture Bonnie Prince Charlie remain on the shore, afraid to follow the boat into the rough waters.
Chorus:
Speed, bonnie boat, like a bird on the wing,
Onward! the sailors cry;
Carry the lad that's born to be King
Over the sea to Skye.
The chorus repeats the opening verse, with the sailors once again urging the boat to move forward and take the prince to safety on the Isle of Skye.
Verse 3:
Though the waves leap, soft shall ye sleep,
Ocean's a royal bed.
Rocked in the deep, Flora will keep
Watch by your weary head.
Verse 4:
Many's the lad fought on that day,
Well the Claymore could wield,
When the night came, silently lay
Dead on Culloden field.
Verse 5:
Burned are our homes, exile and death,
Scattered the loyal men;
Yet ere the sword cool in the sheath
Charlie will come again.
Verse:
Sing me a song of a lass that is gone
Say, could that lass be I?
Merry of soul she sailed on a day
Over the sea to Skye.
Wow! Thank you. Wish the creator would pin this at the top! ❤️💜💚

Such a beautiful soft voice yet hits with the pride of the highlands. I love the songs of my people. Thank you Ella Roberts for bringing a sensational take on this historic melody
Ella is beautiful.
My mother sang this to me when I was a child. Now 70 years later that same lady who I love so dearly is very very ill and approaching her final days. I’ll remind my mum how much I love her by playing this at here funeral some day....love you so much Mum.
Wish you all the strength you need going through the tough journey. Hugs
That's lovely but play it for her before she passes.
Sing it to her now.
We have more
May the seas be calm my friend.
I live in California. I loved the Isle of Skye when I visited many years ago. You are blessed and I can relate to your wish to return.
@@M209T Thank you! I appreciate the kind words. My dream is to return and never leave again.
Dunvegan!!!! I'm proud of my auld and true Scots heritage. There's Irish and Italian in there too but I was born and bred in my bonny home🏴🏴🏴🏴I couldn't love it more 💙💙💙💙
This is the first time I've heard this melody outside of watching Outlander! That is really awesome, Fraser McKenzie. Outlander is an awesome show.
My wife and I would play this for our son while he was still in utero. He would kick and move when he heard it. He is now 7 weeks old and this still will calm him down and usually make him sleep. We love this rendition. Thank you!
thank you for sharing
493 dislikes, really? This woman has a beautiful voice and sings with heart. What's not to like?!
Annabel Lee probably bots
If not bots, probably outlander fans expecting the wrong lyrics

Christ this is so breathtakingly beautiful. I have a wee bit of Scottish blood in my veins (Great great grandmother was full Scots) but I'm a born and bred New Zealander. Still - that little bit of connection is a proud one.
Beautiful wild country with a rich history, built on the back of it's Highland warriors.
You Scots will always hold a special place in my heart.
Big fan of Outlander, but this takes the song to a new level. Needless to say this most beautiful woman and voice influenced that. The red hair and green eyes are just stunning. Wow!
This is the ORIGINAL song. The Outlander Composer ripped it off and rewrote it to fit the storyline
@@rosierennie5867 why so hostile ? The show didn’t do anything wrong
@@elanorthefair1091 that's really cool and I didn't actual know that even though I am a Skye man myself! I wonder why RLS changed it? Possibly the changed attitude to the Jacobite campaign or maybe he just liked the tube and wanted a less political song to put with it??
AND... Ella is just as beautiful in this life, I was honoured to speak with her at the Celtic Festival in Glen Innes just last weekend.
You have a beautiful Celtic voice. Please do more song like this, its wonderful!
I agree
I think her Celtic voice is a gift l… 🧚♂️
My daughter and I listen to this every bedtime! It's absolutely beautiful ❤
I'm Puerto Rican with Scottish ancestry which is real apparent when one sees my mom's blue eyes and red hair. I loved connecting to this part of me in this song. Beautiful song.
I have CHILLS.... you really bring Scotland to life in your voice and videos... I am not crying
I am a descendant of The House of Stuart. My family left for America in the 1700's and fought the Red Coats again in the Revolutionary War. This song brings me to tears but we are still standing proudly on our feet. Alba Gu Brath!!
What are the surnames of your family that fought in the Rev War?
For me, as a Szekler-Hungarian, Scotland’s and Ireland’s history has always been close to my heart. I also have a deep affinity to the landscape, music, and literature of these two. Can’t remember where I heard it the first time, but this melody (the first two lines) stuck in my head so much so that I used it as a lullaby with both my kids. And now I found the whole song, incl. its story.
love this song, my few greats grandfather was a Stewart of Athol at the battle of Culloden.
I also descend from Clan Stewart of Atholl.
My MacPhersons died at Culloden and also hid Bonnie Prince In the isle of Skye until the French came to rescue him. My Clan Chief lost all his Estates and hid in Skye caves for 9 years - according ago Robert lewis Stevenson
I am also a descendant from the Stewart clan and it no coincidence this song found it's way to me.
So very proud of my Scottish heritage ❤️
My great, great grandfather was a Irish Jacobite who fought for the Bonnie Prince over the water.
Michael Hanlon the irish had a huge involvement in that rising its not nearly recognised enough
How OLD are you???
Willow Broaddus Ha ha... right!?! Nice catch ☺️
My great great (many greats) grandfather came over a little before the revolution.

My dad is from Scotland and my mum England. So proud to be half Scottish🏴this song is beautiful
Some songs, even if they are beautiful, we listen to it today and we forget after a while, but other songs, like this remains engraved in our hearts all our life.
God... I love this song, I love your cover, and most of all, I love Scotland.
I'm 31 weeks pregnant and my baby moves and kicks like crazy when I play this song! He is part Scottish! .. hehe
Now my baby boy is 4 months old and he's in my arms falling asleep... Love my life.

Ella Roberts has such a pretty voice. Every time I hear her sing it makes my day better
Maybe one day Scotland will be Free!
Ella Roberts is gorgeous and she is more talented than everyone in hollywood producing music at the moment. Nothing but raw beautiful talent. I appreciate her! Good for you Ella!
She is beautiful and entirely suits the part of Flora Macdonald. No man can avoid being entranced by her.
Gosh I’m 70 now & remember singing this during a music lesson - didn’t know know my heritage then - both Scottish & Irish
I'm Scots Irish and trace my roots to the highlands even though I'm 5th generation Texan the music touches deep into the heart.
I’m Scottish with a touch of Irish on my father’s side and Scottish on my mother’s side. I’m first generation American and second out of Scotland. My mother was born in northern England. I’m also in the south, but I’m from the southeast. SC to be precise.
I love everything about Scottish, songs, pipes and drums, landscape, their proudly attitude ❤❤❤❤❤
She looks like a princess from the middle ages. A beautiful unique voice
Its so calming but the verses are so powerful!
how is your dog?
♥️
I hope your puppy is OK?
Speed, bonnie boat, like a bird on the wing,
Onward! the sailors cry;
Carry the lad that's born to be King
Over the sea to Skye.
Loud the winds howl, loud the waves roar,
Thunderclaps rend the air;
Baffled, our foes stand by the shore,
Follow they will not dare.
[Chorus]
Many's the lad fought on that day,
Well the claymore did wield,
When the night came, silently lay
Dead on Culloden field.
[Chorus]
Though the waves heave, soft will he sleep,
Ocean's a royal bed.
Rock'd in the deep Flora will keep
Watch by your weary head.
[Chorus]
Paola thanks for the words of the song its beautifuly sang by Ella
Thank you for sharing the lyrics
Thanks for posting the lyrics! Now I can terrorise my poor kale garden by singing it.
Sung! Not sang! Grr!
My maternal grandmother came from the McMillan clan, whose clan was recognised for their "succor" help given to Bonnie Prince Charlie during the Jacobite Rebellions, the song pulls goosebumps for me
That would be the MacMillan clan.
So beautiful it hurts. Missing Scotland and Skye so, so much.
Stunning voice! Love Celtic music
OMG how on earth could you have such a beautiful angelic voice????
3:23 Flora Macdonald is famous for helping Bonnie Prince Charlie escape from Scotland after the defeat of the Jacobites at the Battle of Culloden in 1746.........what a stunning performance by red haired Ella.....best version of this song you will ever hear!
Proud to be from Clan MacDonald
I read this story when I was twelve years aged, in the early 70's. Flora disguised the prince like a woman, and he became a supposed maidservant named 'Betty Burke'. In the same book it was told Catherine Douglas 'Kate Barlass' and her amazing gest. Does exist any song about this another scottish heroine?
My family on my mother's side is from Clan MacDonald. Never been prouder of it then when hearing this song.
@@FrozenWillow1980 And sadder times followed for us. Leig leinn ar n-àm a dh'fhalbh, agus ar n-àm ri teachd fhaighinn air ais. Alba Shaor!
Some singers we listen to with our ears and rare those we listen to with our hearts, one of them is Ella Roberts. This song is a masterpiece
I was born in Scotland (Dumfries), but came here to Australia at the age of 4. And here I am now, still in Australia, aged 58, listening to this beautiful music from my homeland, and yes, I admit it, experiencing some very strong emotions. I guess we never let go of our heritage.

I am here in Ireland listening to this. Absolutely stunningly beautiful. ❤️
there is a draw to Scotland, a place with so much fierce pride and love of country.
Jajajaj

Hi from Dumfries
One of the most beautifully unforgettable music videos I've ever seen. I love this song, and it's essence is captured so perfectly here.
This song contains the power that can make you wish to spend the rest of your life in Scotland. And that's my family's wish.
By heritage I'm an Irishman. This kind of music quiets the turbulent ocean of my soul and makes the sun even more brighter.
This song touches my heart although I`m not Scottish but German, it lets me feel our blood relationship...
My mother used to sing and hum this as a lullaby for my brothers and I. I loved this song before I even knew what it was called. I only found out when I had my own children years later, what it was called! I used to sing it to my children and my father would quip, Oh god off to bloody Skye AGAIN!
Listen to Cor Chuil Aodha singing Gile mear it's about Bonnie Prince Charlie in Gaelic it'll knock your socks off
What a beautiful voice!!!💖💖💖
Yesterday I was searching for something entirely different and discovered Ella's music. Her singing this song and the video are so beautiful, I've had this on loop and subscribed. Looking forward to her other videos!
i just came across this videos her voice the landscape everything is simply breath taking
The Skye Boat Song
(Chorus)
Speed bonnie boat like a bird on the wing
Onward the sailors cry
Carry the lad that's born to be king
Over the sea to Skye
Loud the wind howls, loud the waves roar,
Thunderclaps rend the air
Baffled our foes, stand by the shore
Follow they will not dare
Chorus
Many's the lad fought on that day
Well the claymore did wield
When the night came, silently lain
Dead on Culloden field
Chorus
Though the waves heave, soft will ye sleep
Ocean's a royal bed
Rocked in the deep, Flora will keep
Watch by your weary head
Chorus
Burned are our homes, exile and death
Scatter the loyal men
Yet e'er the sword cool in the sheath
Charlie will come again.
Chorus

My great, great grandmother Wildashe immigrated from Scotland to Canada as a widower with 5 children. Only just beginning my journey of discovering my Scottish heritage. Seems well have a little Scot in us 😊
Another song that we sang as children in Australia and my husband has a Scottish grandmother. We are all proud of our ancestry no matter what it is. This girl has a beautiful voice 🇳🇿🇳🇿
I'm not Scottish, never even been up and it's unlikely I ever will, but stuff like this is a real tear jerker, in a good way.
The singer a real bonnie lass.
My body belongs to America, but my heart and soul belongs to Scotland. I’m so proud of my heritage 🏴
I feel this song even though I’m not scottish and know nothing about its history. This song really touches the heart. Beautifully sung
This music and outlander song makes me love and appreciate my scottish heritage more.
OMG, all her videos remind me of my favourite Scottish historical romance novels.
This song rings deep with my family.
Is it possible to be homesick for a home you've only seen in photographs? My family is from Ayre, but I feel the call of home every time I hear the pipes.

Just gorgeous. I think they should use this version for the show, it's very beautiful.
My daughter and I visited Inverness in Dec 2016....We love Scotland and it's folk!
This is the voice of Angel- Angel ELLA when she gives us a part of Scotland and Gaelic tradition. With of all my admiration
This music makes me so proud of my ancestors what they sacrificed for me, the isles of the sea that they called home, the Lord looked upon it and declared that it was good.
Omg I remember singing this during music classes at primary school -that was 55yrs ago .. since then I have loved it 💕
Same; my school choir sang it at parents' night when I was in fourth grade 20 years ago, with the chorus sung by the whole choir and the verses were solos.
Beautiful version. The melody of this song is so lilting and haunting at the same time. I find it very moving.
A beautiful song to my ancestors. Thank you, it brings me to tears for all I've lost.
