Nice sauce! The cutter was a sweet surprise for day 1. I remember when the nomad came out and realed me back into the game to replace the aurora. New starters are always exciting. Nothing beats a fresh start. So the zero to hero sounds like a nice change of pace!
Thanks Otto! Yeah I’m looking forward to it - going with loot only on everything like armour, weapons, food etc and see if I can go from cutter to 890J over the course of 3.18!
One thing to keep in mind is that CIG are radically changing the flight model soon, so atmospheric flight, especially hovering, will theoretically be much better with the VTOL engines on the Cutter vs almost all other ships on this list. They are also expected to release the Ranger motorcycles which will almost certainly fit in the cutter along with some cargo. Just sayin.
@@philetairos1294 yeah here’s to hoping they have something lined up for Invictus. The only ship I’m personally on the lookout for is something Polaris sized but Anvil!
I really wish CIG thought about the ROC when they released the Cutter, they should have made it fit correctly or not fit at all. The biggest thing that the Cutter has shown is how badly the Aurora and Mustang need a gold pass. Hopefully they do it for 4.0.
I’d imagine they’ll find the time in between other things to give some ships a gold and beyond pass! I think the gap in utility is going to make more sense when the cutter sits at its normal price.
One of the benefits of the Pisces; out of all the starter ships, it is the only one I know of that can be spawned at the PB platforms at mining/research outposts. Pretty handy in a pinch!
With the discount on the Cutter there is no competition on what is the best starter ship, in my opinion. Sure it doesn't have as many guns but unless you're a dogfighting god you shouldn't be dogfighting in a starter ship. 😆 Now if you're including the let's call it tier 1.5 starter ships I would give my vote to the avenger Titan. A bit more cargo at 8 units and better combat performance while still having a bed to log out in. Now logging out really isn't something I'd want to do currently in the game. I've had problems logging back in sometimes. Better to log out at a station or major city.
Tbf it should really be compared more with the Pisces and Titan than the Mustang / Aurora but because of the discount there’s no doubt it’s the best buy this week for anyone getting into the game.
Great video thank you! Lots of great ships, I am hoping now that the Devs have shown they will revisit ships with a proper update given how much they have improved with ship design and production - I am hoping they will revisit several ships, one of which is the Nomad. It first needs a proper back door to reach the cargo deck, makes for getting in and out of the MULE and ROC much better. Also need to adjust the lights in the cockpit so not to hit the pilot in the face, lastly is the metallic ringing engine noise tone it down or tune it less grating. Lastly improved fuel range as its ship Name does not fit well with its performance With mantling that is supposedly out soon, this will help with the Cutlass series getting in the side of the ship when there are problems with the back gate ramp. That or CIG needs to sell us an LTI for various Ladders. These are some nice changes and releases, helps bolster confidence some in their development process. Thanks again, looking forward to your next video!
This was a good one :) I would suggest a starter ship for everyone. Doesn't matter if it's the first or the fifteenth ship... You can always find use for a fast shuttle from here to there.
To me it’s down to what you’re into doing - if you’re more industrially inclined or want to do bunkers then the Cutter wins it for me because of the internal space & vehicle carrying. But if you’re more ship combat focussed the Titan still wins.
@@paranikumarlpk so some bunkers are hostile and you have to drive to them from out of range of the turrets. But also I managed to cram a roc in there for mining (door doesn’t close but that doesn’t make it unviable)
I upgraded my aurora to a cutter and I absolutely love it. I have a thing for the rotating VTOL thrusters so the cutter is perfect for me. Ideal for doing all sorts of tasks
Nice one mate! Yeah it’s an awesome little ship. I think the issue with what Shawn’s suggested here is the new pack would have to be bought with new money (so would take another $45 whereas the way you did it only set you back $15) - think you made the right choice.
@@LoudGuns yeah that’s actually what i did with my Titan starter, switched to a Pisces foundation pack with sq42, then melted and used the credits to buy subscription, paint (which you can remelt) and flair
@@LoudGuns yeah, I had a look at the pack, but I couldn’t justify spending any more than the upgrade, so I got the upgrade. Cheapest ship with VTOLs that rotate tho. Love the cutter it’s a great starter and the best one imo at the current price. When it’s more expensive I still would say get the titan if you are looking to spend more than 45
Yeah it’s a tight choice & I think it really comes down to the gameplay you’re looking for. If you’re out for ship combat I’d take an avenger or even a Mustang over it, but for industrial or bunker focussed starters I’d go cutter. I also feel the cutter might see more use as a run around later on even after you’ve bought stuff in game above it.
wow Guns, you really went in depth with this one. this is a really good topic to put up around the IAE. I really liked my mustang when i started, but I have friends with the aurora and the pisces. I wish they offered the cutter in a bundle with squadron 42, if they had done that I'd melt my mustang pack and upgrade to a titan or a 325a.
Yeah I’m hoping it’ll give a bit of food for thought for the new folks. It’s difficult because if you have an old pack replacing Squadron is now so so expensive!
@@LoudGuns yeah, the main draw for me is the LTI on that cutter package, I don't like having my starter sit there without lti on it. but if im trying to get squadron and an avenger titan it works out just a little more expensive to do it with that cutter pack. Nice overview I would agree with everything you said. but for me looks of the ship is also important even though like you say "the player may not stay very long in a starter ship" Ive gone for the Pisces as my starter now days as like you said it fits into a run about ship when you get up to a ship caring level like the Carrack, Polaris, Odyssey, Kraken LOL . it is funny thinking of a starter ship been used later on in the late game but they still have a use
Yeah absolutely - and I think this is where you can actually get some long term value in certain starters. I can actually see myself sticking with a cutter longer term as my runaround - truly is a mini cutlass!
Got the Cutter, the looks might scare a lot of folk away. But i think it's about the package what matters. Great video but what i miss as a fresh new player of SC. There are wipes in where you lose everything except for your reputation and the ships you bought for real money. Why not some advice for buying a ship from that angle? What ship is best suitable to progress after a wipe. Also why would you buy a 300 euro or more for a ship with for say 6 months of assurance? What happens when that runs out?
I was to get a C8X this IAE but bought a warbond Cutter in the end as I can't see the advantage of the C8X now other than two seats and being spawnable at outposts.
To be honest the Pisces does still have a lot of utility - it is a lot more nimble than the cutter and has more potential lifespan as a snub for the carrack etc - but the cutter is an excellent ship!
After you outgrow a starter ship I would guess the majority of players that don't want to spend a crap ton of money will gravitate towards either the Cutlass Black or the Freelancer. The Cutlass is more offensively oriented while the Freelancer is a more defensive cargo hauler. Freelancer has twice the shields while the Cutlass has a turret that can face forward to help attack things.
I backed the game like 10 years ago when it was on Kickstarter. Currently my plan is to wait until the game gets released before I start playing, and then to start at the very bottom with my Aurora MR and works my way up. We'll see how it goes... I hope it doesn't take too many more years.
I would compare Star Citizen to Eve Online, some of em ships are going to take a years to grind and get. Then again you can have a lot of fun being a crew on another ship, you just play the game, make UEC and not have to worry about your ship blowing up.
Cheers, great starter vid. I'm still torn over the usefulness of a bed, and that's a major factor for me, but also accessibility is a big one I think. E.g. I had the 300 series but hated that long clip entering the ship. The 100 series is much better in that way If the kore had a bed, I'd be sorted!
DO YOU RECOMMEND THE C8X PISCES EXPEDITION OR THE CUTTER FOR DELIVERY ONLY? I already got a Nomad (ill be upgrading it soon to a cutty) to use for mining with roc and selling scu cargo, I just want another ship but a smaller and lighter ship just for delivery.
Really hard to call. Right now in Stanton I’d personally lean towards the Pisces, but long term I think the range, actual cargo grid and bed of the cutter might make it the higher utility pick. My real advice would be to wait for Invictus at the end of this week and test both out by renting them.
I mentioned in the beginning but it can get a wee bit lost - because I live in the UK we have 20% tax on everything. The prices I was saying should be right but what you see from my screen will effectively be 120%.

is it worth it to spend extra on the pisces vs the cutter starter pack? Also if I want the pisces should I get the cutter and ccu up to the pisces to get the cutters life time insurance?
Yes, as the C8X Pisces has a higher USD Ship value (45 USD) versus the Drake Cutter (40 USD), you can Ship Upgrade (Also known as CCU) upwards only, and the C8X Pisces the Drake Cutter has "warped" / "mutated" into will inherit the most valuable insurance - Lifetime Insurance in this case. Note that the only flaw of this is that if you were to exchange the Drake Cutter pledge "Upgraded" to the C8X pisces, and you want to buy back the pledge, you can only buy back the Drake Cutter, not the upgrade unless you buy the Upgrade from the Cutter to the C8X again. If the Anvil Psices C8X's Ship USD Value were to ever increase in the future, while the Drake Cutter's USD value were to stay the same or even decrease (Due to possible balancing nerfs) you will have to pay the possible in future greater price difference between the Drake Cutter and a buffed and increased USD value Anvil C8X Pisces.
