How refreshing to have someone doing a tip actually telling their audience the truth about the difficulty of the tip rather than only promoting it as a fix. Well done!
Finally! Thank you Jonathan for this specific video. I have taken numerous lessons and still do but never could understand exactly how to delay the release properly. No matter how many hours of practice, with camera, my release at best is at my belt buckle and not near the left thigh. Your explanation now makes perfect sense as to my early extension....standing up too soon even though I load my left thigh, push my left hip back but still manage to hit the ball inside the club face. I will work diligently using your concise demonstration. Thank you.
Because of this information you've showered down with this cast I've been able to consistently hit my irons and driver plus 30 yards , thank you Jonathan!
To me this is the most informative lesson out of all the ones I have seen in the past, it is all about the business part of the swing. My biggest regret is playing golf for years and missing out on this.
Wow this was just what I needed. My swing was in shambles, I knew I didn't have fundamentals and everything felt so weak. But this instantly got me hitting crisp, powerful shots, irons and driver.
I am glad I found this video, even if I was a couple years late! I am 66, playing golf for 60 years, and have always been a single digit handicapper. I have felt my head drop into and beyond impact when I am playing well, but I haven't tried to use that feeling as a primary swing thought. Today on the range, I made a strong effort to lower my head toward the ball in the downswing, and I think my body rather automatically rotated out of the way, to my left, and I did not hit it fat. Rather, I felt the compression and distance I have been missing for a couple of years!
Hello Jonathan, When I was in my late 40's I played to a 2.3 hcp. I absolutely smashed the ball off of the tee so generally had a wedge into most par 4's and a 6 or 7 iron into par5's. While playing with my son, I drove a 400 yard par 4. I used a freakishly strong grip and aimed well right hitting big slinging draws that rolled forever. For years I was told by EVERYONE who I was paired with... You can't play good golf swinging like that!!! You need to get lessons. After hearing this over and over for so long I finally gave in thinking they can't all be wrong. I took a five lesson pack from a local pro and NEVER PLAYED WELL AGAIN!!! It's been 11 years as I am now 60 and my hcp has crept up to over a 13. I watched your video "The move" the other week and though you caution it to be difficult, I found it to be quite easy to accomplish as the explanations in your vids are clear and precise. I am 60 but I mountain bike, run trails,, and "RUCK" up and down mountains so I still have a great deal of strength and flexibility, I played the other day after practicing "the move" on the range a few times(results were almost immediate at the range) I drove a 330 yard par 4 and am completely ecstatic about how far and STRAIGHT I am suddenly back to hitting the golf ball . Shots are coming off the irons like rockets. I love the way that you caution everyone that this will not be easy and in some cases un-attainable whilst all of the other teachers promise the next great secret that anyone can do. I thank you sir.
It's about time someone correctly explained this head / body move and NOT blather about it being a "hula-hoop" or "bicycle wheel" while keeping the head "perfectly still", or something similar. Excellent instructional video. 👍
Jonathan, I’ve realized that this intentional moving the head down is what creates and allows the correct hand path, I.e to the left pocket. Amazing stuff as always. I shot 81 this week, previous best was 87. All thanks to a couple of weeks of your drills
I go after the ball with my right side now and it's made a huge difference to my position of strike.I now play the ball further forward in my stance and take a nice divot after the ball has gone.Brilliant teach .Thank you Regards David
Incisive, consistent with scientific swing measurements, JT nails it again. No fluff, pertinent and precise. I’m grateful for your excellent video. I am a committed student of swing mechanics and the game as well and you are top drawer! Aaron from Canada.
I did the three step lower head move and I was killing it on the range with no effort. Took a bit of it to the course and was 6 over with 3 to play then rained off. It’s hard to convince you body to do this but it does work. Excellent lesson and advice. Thank you
Just found your channel after getting back into the game. Great content! This video has unlocked the secret I was missing for releasing the club properly. I’ve been able to get into a good position in the downswing to about halfway down but then haven’t been able to hold onto the angles and end up casting the club and early extending with the arms and rolling over the wrists. I look forward to putting this little gem into practice! Thank you.
Thanks Jonathan. Good stuff. A lot of us have poor contact, afraid to hit behind the ball (and other glitches) when we pull up, . Your lesson shows how to not to hit the ground by the keeping the package of arms, hands and club condensed further into the release. Also, nice tip about the head as an integral part. Going to work on my hip rotation engine and flexibility and try out these nuggets!
THIS WAS GREAT! THANK YOU FOR EXPLAINING THIS PROBLEM SO CLEARLY!!! This is my biggest fault and power drain in my swing. Now I have something to work on and a clear idea on how to fix this.
Wow, this looks difficult, but the thorough explanation is so great! Thank you, I'll try it out on the range. I expect it to take a while to be able to do this.
your videos are the best, you're really good at explaining what needs to happen, when I watch your videos and go out the range compared to "others" the impact is just better. There are great instructors/videos out there but keep doing what you do Jon, great content, thanks!
I was working on this move today after watching this video I understand now why I was not getting it to work, this is one of the best golf videos I’ve ever seen, can’t wait for tomorrow.
Nice vid John. And you have plenty of mobility to get your head down in backswing. Just let your nose follow your hands in the takeaway and that will create room for your shoulder to turn. I used to rise up too and not get a big enough turn until I made this simple adjustment. Nicklaus used to preset his head to the right (looking at ball out of corner of his left eye).
Great Video, Jonathan! Your explanation is reflected in the swing of Rory McIlroy. In his swing i liked to see his handpath, because I had problems with that. But now i know there's no turning by itself. Closing of the clubhead is only by Ulnarflexion of the hands, turning of the pelvis and inertia of the club.
Wow, I've sort of commented on this before ("The Position"), but it's like you and I are working on the same things simultaneously! I'm amazed just how difficult this is for me as someone of average athletic ability (and old) to do. It is, IMO, "the way". I stumbled upon something - a visualization - that has helped me personally in this area. I don't want to bore your followers with details as it would run on for a bit but, you have to find out for yourself the feels/sensations - intentions - required for you to get these results. Through trial and error. A small tidbit I've found useful: don't pay that much attention to any given pro golfers actual swing - watch their practice motions (Justin Rose, Alex Noren I think it is, Adam Scott sometimes...). Those pre-swing motions are what they want to _feel_ in the swing - and it almost NEVER looks the same as the actual swing in full motion. Unfortunately this is captured on video only about 0.1% of the time.
Great tip! I am 66 and struggling to stay with my shot and not stand up, at the same time creating lag , sitting or getting low and straight line follow through. I have been trying for two months and achieved spurts of success. Not standing up after many years is difficult to change. Still trying anything you can offer would be much appreciated. Thank you Jonathan
im 18 hc and have bad habits on moving head too early towards target before impact and missed solid contact, just a week ago im putting effort at the range to hold my head behind the ball during downswing but it requires lead hand to stay close to the body and rotate both hand while turning my hips as wide as i can so i can extend both hand in full after impact... its a weird feeling and very hard to get all things together in place, but i feel more relax and hit well... and now im watching your videos, it really helps me to re assure that what im doing is correct... thanks for the great lesson.. appreciate it
It's really important to keep your head behind the ball, especially with the driver. When I start doing what you're doing, I do this drill where I do a normal backswing, then just drop the clubhead all the way to the ground as I rotate, and drag it through impact (not hitting a ball obviously). Then gradually sync it up until your clubhead is just brushing the grass.
Many thanks Jonathan! I was just working on this and your video filled in some of the unanswered questions I had about early release and RLB at impact.
Not sure why I've never seen or heard this shown and explained this way, via my own lessons as well as many videos, but thank you. Yet ANOTHER piece to the puzzle.
Jonathan, you are an amazing teacher, I have been teaching for 25 years and you are just the best. I would like to pick your brain for a tour player that I have been helping if you like to. Please let me know Thank you for all you do... would be interested to come to Florida next winter ? thank you Marina
@@JonathanTaylor63 Thank you for your reply but I do have a tech question that I can't resolve my self. This guy Tour Pro has a very standard / long distance with his irons but when he uses the driver he looses 25 yards against the rest of the field. See this does not happen when he uses the irons and I wonder what could be the reason. of course we already check L.Angle and AOA but just the speed drops ....any suggestion by your experience ? Ciao Marina
Thank you for mentioning the shank here. I've been trying to transition to this release for months, and my game is almost unplayable right now as I keep shanking if I don't delay the release. My release is consistent enough that I introduce the hosel each time, as the rest of my motion is trying to collect the ball with bent wrists, and if my wrists extend, it's hosel city.
A work in progress and a real eye opener. Thanks for sharing this move with us. Have been working hard to grasp this move. I was always a big divot taker but, and if, I can continue to improve this move I am no longer taking big divots. I have also noticed that my ball flight has changed to a more penetrating flight but a can still hit it higher when needed. Thanks for this free tip of tips!!

Even keeping your head level is so important and can help your game I’ve noticed this with tiger head drops in backswing and even more in transition, it totals about 1’!! Thanks for the videos Jonathan- I have been trying to apply these techniques to my swing and have found that they do work. The only problem is they really make my left hip socket sore. I guess I'll have to do some flexibility/strength training in that area in order to perform this type of swing. By they way, I'm 62 and in decent, but not great shape.
Thank you Jonathan, I’ve worked on several of your recommendations during the lock out and they have made wonders in my game. I wonder wether you could imagine a drill to master this delaying release technic, something we could work at home or at the gym. This 3 steps head down process take place extremely fast during the actual swing, so I guess that a drill able to be executed at a “low pace” could be quite useful. Thanks again. P.s. “Te move” concept deserves an Oscar award for you as golf instructor
Great lesson Jonathan...It's going to be hard and a lot of work to get out of my early release habit.I have been doing this early release for some time now (it's just awful) ..sure would be nice to hit solid shots again with some distance.Going down like this with the head will feel to me like my club is going to stick in the ground.Wish me good luck...Thanks again...
Yes this works. Yes I’ve seen it in good ball strikers (your pelvis moves). Yes it is hard - mentally, as JT mentions often. Yes, it takes real, actual, WORK. Yes you can do it if you’re older (I’m getting it and I’m 60+). Yes you must first get beyond the impulse to smash it from the top. That’s the hardest part.
been following on/off for some time.. always the golden touchstone. this is absolutely that & more! second half being the prime example. and Jon.. one is only ‘old’, if one says so. stay handsome 😉
Hi Jonathan, Would you consider a video on hitting a fade? I'm thinking you would want your shoulders and clubface more open at impact, and a out-to-in swing, but not sure how to get the sequence right, or drills to do. I would think you would want to break it down into pieces to master one at a time. I'm particularly interested in that inside 150 yd approach shot where you want a high fade with some backspin to stick the green. Thanks.
This videp is great and answers many questions I had relation to leg power and generating speed and avoid early release. Though, I am wondering how you feel about back injury risk with this level of contortion? Your explanation and demonstration of the concept is excellent!
Hello , in your new fantastic video you mentioned the catapult effect. Do you provide a special Video in regards of that subject? Perhaps in addition with : Parametric Acceleration? Many thanks.
As an off 3 player, and one who enjoys studying the swing, I admit you have an excellent understanding of the golf swing and deserve far more recognition. What do you think about the hands through impact? I find when I pull them towards my left thigh I am able to preserve the angle between my left forearm and the club shaft.. similar to the way Hideki Matsuyama looks when he’s practicing before shot.
Hi Jonathan, can you do a video on how to keep trail elbow tucked and in front of torso on the downswing down before impact? Hard to do without a different view on how to do this.
I can attest that if you maintain the spine angle and rotate you can hit it well and reliably, and with really good power. But it is a bit hard on the body. A weird feeling to it too, especially at first.
I find this move so hard. Having played the last 30 years with a somewhat successful armsy swing... I find it very hard to turn through the ball and achieve the late hit..i just can't 'feel' it during the downswing. I'm close to admitting defeat and just carry on playing with what I've got
So for someone who straightens the trail arm at impact, will this force the body to keep it bent? Or am I going to be shoveling dirt for awhile as the body adjusts lol
This is awesome!! I appreciate the caveat that this is hard to implement - just to clarify, assuming my hips are rotating well, I’m trying to keep my shoulders closed to target as long as possible, move the head down toward the ball (to prevent early extension and in my case flipping and pulling) - correct thinking?
Almost, just don't try and keep your shoulders closed, get your trail shoulder pulling down at the start of your downswing to keep you on plane and let your shoulders open to the target naturally.
I appreciate that this could be good for a young man to learn Jonathan but I am 71 and reasonable fit, however I hurt my back on the follow through trying this swing. I think when you read get to my age, a more conventional swing with minimal side bend is the best for my back and to accept the result. Your thoughts…?
Great video Johathan. I have been working on the move of going down under. Sometimes a plug the club into the ground (fat shot) if I release the right wrist angle too soon?
@5:27 is where I fail. If you notice it looks like you have pressure in your left foot toes? I have that issue where the pressure stays in the left foot toes too long and not getting into my left heel quick enough after performing the move. If you were to guess where is the break down? Thanks
This is an excellent video and very helpful to what is needed in the downswing. This kind of information is so valuable. I would take some of these and create a video, and I would do what other internet people are doing e.g. one has a coffee cup on his site and you click it and he gets a nominal amount of money, for example $2-3 for his information. You should give us an opportunity to finanancially support you through some facility like this. Your information is much too valuable to just give for free. Thank you though for what you do.
Steve is there a way for a person to clear the hips effectively after they have had a new prosthetic hip replacement? Would you possibly make any suggestions because i'm scared i'm going to dislocate something in my downswing lol....(left hip replaced 2020)
Getting your head down that low creates some major strain on my lower back. Perhaps you could give a tutorial for a best, functional golf swing for a stiff, old man ?
This will not create back injury as long as you have turned your hips/pelvic. The lower back/lumber spine is carried with the pelvic meaning that only the thoracic spine bends and turns.
To avoid the stain/pain on lumber spine and the hollow back of the lower spine I tense my lower abdominal muscles before I do initiate the single take away. Once I reach parallel point 1 one I dissolve the tension in abdominal muscles to support that sitting move and the shear motion whit the right food while the arms and club moves still up towards the shoulder line. Right? Thanks for your advice, Jonathan.
If you look at my recent videos I go into more depth on the release. You should be releasing the hinge/Radial deviation in your wrist almost immediately at the start of the downswing but that will build flexion in your lead wrist which should not release until hip height which is 30ms before impact.
You need to get to the tip early, and you need to make it clear what the tip is. Can tell when the preamble, observation part ends, and the tip begins.

Yes this works. Yes I’ve seen it in good ball strikers (your pelvis moves). Yes it is hard - mentally, as JT mentions often. Yes, it takes real, actual, WORK. fantastic content as usual, Jonathan. I know I say it all the time, but I seriously need to pay you a visit.
Will seriously keep practicing 👍
been following on/off for some time.. always the golden touchstone. this is absolutely that & more! second half being the prime example.
and Jon.. one is only ‘old’, if one says so. stay handsome 😉
Hi Jonathan,
Would you consider a video on hitting a fade? I'm thinking you would want your shoulders and clubface more open at impact, and a out-to-in swing, but not sure how to get the sequence right, or drills to do. I would think you would want to break it down into pieces to master one at a time. I'm particularly interested in that inside 150 yd approach shot where you want a high fade with some backspin to stick the green. Thanks.
Yes:)
@@JonathanTaylor63 Awesome!
Hurts my back already but I'm going to try this tomorrow.
Looking forward trying great lesson
I'm working on this downward move slow but steady!
This videp is great and answers many questions I had relation to leg power and generating speed and avoid early release. Though, I am wondering how you feel about back injury risk with this level of contortion? Your explanation and demonstration of the concept is excellent!
Great . Thank you so much.
Quite right, and by letting your head go down you will make that even easier to do.
Hi Jonathan, can you do a video on how to keep trail elbow tucked and in front of torso on the downswing down before impact? Hard to do without a different view on how to do this.
great explanations! thank you
Sounds a lot like John(athan) Malkovich😁
Great video
I can attest that if you maintain the spine angle and rotate you can hit it well and reliably, and with really good power. But it is a bit hard on the body. A weird feeling to it too, especially at first.
great lesson
Jonathan, is this the same with all clubs even driver?
Hey Jonathan, great video! Do you have one similarly but specifically for the subtle differences with a driver? Thanks!
One video* that is.
I don't but maybe that is an idea.
How does this differ for the driver swing? Great video!
Do you maintain flex in the legs or are you allowing them to explode up while the upper body continues working down and through?
Keep flex in the legs until the hip turn is turn finished and then explode.
Very nice, great.
Solid through impact
great explanation. trying to learn. I can drive 300 without this. interested to see what happens.
I think you just solved my thin shots and topping shots
Getting your head down that low creates some major strain on my lower back. Perhaps you could give a tutorial for a best, functional golf swing for a stiff, old man ?
good question. would this move create injury?
This will not create back injury as long as you have turned your hips/pelvic. The lower back/lumber spine is carried with the pelvic meaning that only the thoracic spine bends and turns.
Jonathan Taylor great. thanks
Top draw again Jonathan. You might not be able to get your head down but that’s some colourful clobber for an old boy.... 😂 😂 😂
At my age colour is the only option 😂🤣
thx 👍
Interesting thx
Great video. Watch videos of Tommy Fleetwood (and many others). When I do this, I get pure high draws.
With all respect Jonathan, your fellow countryman John Jacobs stated we should endeavor to release earlier. What say ye’?
If you look at my recent videos I go into more depth on the release. You should be releasing the hinge/Radial deviation in your wrist almost immediately at the start of the downswing but that will build flexion in your lead wrist which should not release until hip height which is 30ms before impact.
You need to get to the tip early, and you need to make it clear what the tip is. Can tell when the preamble, observation part ends, and the tip begins.
Please describe the "side bend in the backswing" as you call it. I see rotation in the backswing... what is the side bend?
ben hogan and jack nicklaus did the release of the legs to perfection
The right side crunch is hard if you are overweight and dangerous for your back if you are not fit, due to the extreme spine twist.
True
I don’t know many people who have that kind of flexibility. I guess I better start taking yoga. Great lesson though. I’m going to try.
