The microbial world is fascinating, terrifying, and a bit revolting all at the same time. It's like I want to see more but I also probably don't want to know just how alive and nasty certain things are ...
Since I learned more about microbiology I wear gloves whenever I have to touch the water in my fish tanks!
Lord Rupert every “revolting” thing you mentioned about humans is caused by microorganisms so you just contributed to his point.
@@ZsaZsaUmbra don't you see how futile that is, considering more than half of our own bodys are made of microbes? Better to accept and embrace and see the beauty, that something so small could live- literally micro life machines. It's incredible!
@@ZsaZsaUmbra basically it's hardly anything to be repulsed by.
Fish can be asymptomatic carriers of pathogenic bacteria and fungus, viruses and parasites, some of which are zoonotic. These can be transferred by contaminated fomites. Fish populations that haven't had prior exposure to these diseases, can sometimes be completely destroyed within days of infection. I believe natural bodies of water and fish populations, are probably less 'disgusting,' albeit more diverse, in their microbiology than that of aquacultured fish in closed system setups. Nonetheless, I will only be bathing in straight Clorox from now on 😁

Beautiful work! The "water flea" is a copepod called 'Cyclops'. The red spot is indeed its one eye, and the egg sacs are an aggregation of multiple eggs as you correctly guessed. They are very interesting little things! I have a colony of them in two of my aquariums. They feed mostly on diatoms and various detritus. Happy hunting!
That just shows that every small thing is part of something bigger. And who knows this might be endless :)

They are copepods, and the "flea" in the video is a 'Cyclops'. Look them up, they are really quite interesting!

Thank you for your thoughtful and informative video. I'm tempted to get a microscope as I have built a pond in my garden and would like to find out what is living there. So far I can only tell there are lots of "water fleas" which gather particularly in sunlight. However, it seems that you have a much better chance of identifying things if you have a "decent" microscope, which your Olympus seems to be from what I have read (but unfortunately probably beyond my budget, although I might be able to stretch to a second-hand one). I liked the fact you didn't want to harm the creature with the egg sacs towards the end of the video, this shows sensitivity to other living things, however insignificant.
I came to Microbehunter to look at Demodex and now I'm addicted. This stuff is so fascinating that, frankly, I'm glad no one else is here to see the big stupid grin on my face! I've subscribed!

Oh my favourite subject... 'pond life'. When I was a child I had a microscope. I got a sample of pond water and showed it to my father, with all the creatures in it swimming about. I told him it was from the kitchen tap and he went crazy, phoning the water supply company and shouting at them. I felt it was too late to tell the truth. Oh dear.

Wonderful video. And the town looked lovely. I have been to Vienna, I am guessing it is near to the metropolis. The video reminded me of Adventures with a Microscope by Richard Headstrom. While its prose is old-fashioned, the book is about hands-on education, and there's nothing old-fashioned about that. Thanks for the video.
Another fantastic look at the world far to small to see without a microscope. It's pretty amazing knowing just how small these creatures are that are featured and yet they are many orders of magnitude larger than the even smaller microbes and critters that can just be seen scurrying about while the travel in and out of the area of focus.
now just imagine how small an atom or an electron is, bc everything around us is composed of atoms...and atoms are composed of subatomic particles....and so on. Everything is light/vibration.

Good trick in a pinch the 2 cover slips holding up one higher. I still have to order some slides with a depression for larger specimens such as larvae but that will work if needed.

microbehunter i have an idea for a video. Get 2 samples if water from tge same pond and treat one to make it "drinkable" with filters and boiling it. I like to see how effective this is.
