This brought back so many memoires for me. Those old forest service roads are what I learned to ride on back in the early 1970's. It was those kind of places that I took my departed wife before we where married. She had never ridden a motorcycle before and half way to the destination she was so mad at me she took off her helmet and slammed it into my stomach as hard as she could. I managed to talk her into continuing on and when we got to the place I wanted to show her she was so happy that she was in tears of joy. I think that is what sealed our relationship. She died of cancer in 2011. She loved the forests and the trees they where her spiritual happy place.

I've ridden more than my share of trails; forestry roads and timber access trails and I can honestly say I have NEVER ever encountered another motorcycle rider carrying a chainsaw strapped to his bike. One day, hell maybe one hour earlier and you'd have been turning back. You walk between raindrops Noraly. I guess it's the reason you've made it this far. You're a talented rider all right but you have the most mind-bending good luck of anyone I know.

I grew up in Vermont USA. I had relatives in Boston. Vermont and New Hampshire.sit side by side with only the Connecticut river, not too big, separating them. The trip from my town to Boston passes through about an equal distance in Vermont and New Hampshire. Even in grade school, I marveled at the difference in land use by the people in Vermont compared to the land use by the people in New Hampshire.
In Vermont, over centuries the forests of the hills were freckled with pastures and farms and homesteads cleared, built,.and in the cycles of time often abandoned. Yet the Connecticut River was like some mystical barrier from the Twilight Zone. When passing through it and entering New Hampshire, the forests of the hills were mostly pristine and uncut surrounding the small villages that were comfortable and well presented. Throughout these same few centuries, the local people appeared to prefer keeping their activity close to the village square. As I contemplated this, my thoughts were that most of Vermont was settled by the Catholic French and English who came down from Quebec and like to move out and cut a piece of their own land while the people of New Hampshire were the Puritans from Boston who liked to keep their activity near their village.
Three of my grandparents were born in Quebec near the Richelieu River. The ancestors of my fourth grandparent arrived on the Mayflower. (That was, of course, after the most tolerant Dutch finally could no longer endure the tribulations of the Puritans and forced them to return to their mother country of England. The English promptly suggested they find a new home in the new lands across the great Atlantic. And this is what they did on the Mayflower. I could go on with a more extended history, but it is a troublesome tale.)
I tell this tale because it might reflect on the difference you are finding in places in the US where the back roads are fairly used from places where the back roads get used very little.

When I heard "forest service", I remember they try to make all roads 'thru ways' somewhere - always two entrances/exits. Logging roads are the opposite and I watch out for a lot of tree stumps OR tied-off bandana markers. I hadn't thought about "county" but with forest service being degraded several years ago, I can see how even county access would be better.
