So Roger worked 8 days straight and then on his day off cleared the trails around his town. It’s people like Roger that are the backbone of our country. They are everywhere but you don’t know it in our world where we tweet that we went to Starbucks.

An entire lifetime is not enough to discover the Western United States. I have been driving around in this country professionally since 1994, logging over 2 million miles, having my own motorcycle in my trailer so I can go where my big truck cannot go and still.... after all these years, I still can find places all the time where I have never been. Just the sheer size of the US is mind blowing. You are showing me new things every time you upload a video. Super Hero Noraly ❤

@@corhendriks1755 , well, I did travel the world here and there, I have even been to the old Soviet Union. Not with truck of course, just as a tourist and me being from Europe and growing up there, I did travel the entire continent. So yes... the world is bigger than the US, I am perfectly aware of. I also have a brother, a niece and a nephew in Sweden.

@@patrickjones1143 , lot of stories but I am a household mover so I am not even driving that much. Freight drivers do well over a 100 000 miles a year if they want to make a living. I know older drivers who have 5 million miles plus. The only problem with that is you would not have time to spend to discover the beauties of this country. All you'd see is pavement and warehouses.
It is amazing that Noraly was telling us about the town's history, then encounters a man who just happens to have historic pictures of the town.

Some of these little towns in Idaho are like this. People will stop anywhere or fill up a parking lot to chat. I love that.

Some of us aren't missing out at all. I have posted photos of my bike in the road in front of a "curvy road" sign with a view of the curves in the distance and the most comments I got was wow, you can just stop your bike in the road and no one comes by! I guess I just take it for granted.

I know. Noraly probably missed out a little. Unfortunately Idaho had been under siege from Californians for the last two decades. It’s a real problem.
I bet she was a treasure trove of local information...wanted to hear her.
The man was clearly excited, but the old woman wasn't approached directly in conversation and this was a passing conversation. The bloke appears to be showing the old woman some photos of the area. But anyway, you shouldn't over think a situation, you could say the woman on the bike, should of got off the bike and got closer to listen? Switch the engine off on the bike and take the helmet of when taking to them. But it was a passing and friendly conversation that doesn't need to turn in sexist comments about mannsplaining. I enjoyed the video without comments on people you don't know and are probably really polite and respectful to old people, male or female etc
That old lady in the car tried at least 20 times to get into the conversation but every time she was cut off. We didn't get to hear her once! LOL

Hey Peter have you watched the missing people mysteries in the USA national parks, guys name is Steve Stockton, proper creepy, I live near Kent in the UK and if I watch one of his videos and then go out for a walk I’m constantly looking behind me and freaking out at any sound hahhaha. I felt exactly the same. Poor thing wanted to talk and probably had tons of great info. Really liked the guy, but was thinking 'c'mon man, let her speak!'. Disappointed when Noraly left before we got to hear what the woman was trying so hard to say. Oh well, sorry, ma'am...don't take it personally. We appreciated you.

If he does all that unasked, he’s probably a proud man who’ll be offended if someone gave him ten bucks for a beer like he’s some employee or something…inviting him for a beer would have been a much better idea.
Roger strikes me as the kind of guy who has an old garage with everything under the sun crammed in it because it all has a use ... and if you are ever in a situation, he will find some random oddball tool or part from the depths of that garage to get you all sorted out. You just know he's that guy! The chainsaw on the back, the toolkit on the front fender... I'm an instant fan! I wondered how he was going to get that 650L past the log without sliding down the hill, but people like Roger always find a way to get where they need to go, and get it done! The timing there was serendipity!
My husband is a Roger. There's nothing he doesn't have. You can ask for the most inane thing, and he's like, "Hold on! I have one!"

I am 71 and like your godson say something similar to myself every couple of days 😉, I still ride, at present preparing a Triumph Tiger 900. Noraly keeps me from being miserable about not yet being able to get out there.
Welcome to Wallace, Miss Noraly.. I was at work when you were there as evident from my car being parked at the library when you filling with petrol. My dad worked at the Hecla Star Mine mine for many years. The cone shaped building was for burning, basically a big fireplace. You drove over the Official first proclaimed center of the universe. Again continue to have a safe journey and enjoy life.

Those incinerators used to be a fixture of timber mills all across the northwestern US. I remember seeing them glowing red in the night.

I am thankful for the geography lessons I am receiving from Noraly. All I ever knew about the USA was from Hollywood movies and Westerns. In truth, that continent is truly awesome and packed with interesting places of infinite diversity and wonderful people.

Angels unaware! People like Tim and Roger exist everywhere, and we saw many of them while Noraly traveled through South & Central America. Men and women who were willing to share what they had with her.
What I like most about Noraly's journey is what @The Best Foodie Show said above -- People everywhere are kind to each other, and especially, those in the rural places of this world --- the world over. Noraly has proven it!
While that is very true in rural America where people have values and work hard, not so in urban wastelands across the country. I would like to see her drive through Portland. Get a good look at the new america!

@@TheJuan72 Yes petrol is english which comes from the french "pétrole". But americans think they invented everything so the put "gazoline" in their vehicules, also known as "gas". Little do they know that the term IS ALSO FRENCH.
I love meeting people like the first guy, Roger, who cleared the trail to keep it open. I’ve traveled to 16 countries and all 50 US states and it’s always nice to know someone like that
I just found this channel in my recommendations. My amazing friend Clara would have loved riding with you. She rode all over in the US and rode in South America and was loved by all who met her. She could talk to anyone. Maybe she's one of the angels watching over you. She watched over people in life as well. Sadly she died in Colorado on a ride when a distracted driver hit her from behind at a stop sign. Please stay safe.
Sorry for your loss. Sounds like she lived a life of adventure. I like to believe she just left this adventure we call life for a new adventure.

Pretty cool Town that's for sure. My ex and I used to drive across country quite a bit from Washington State to Ontario. He was from Washington I was from ontario. Went through that town quite a bit. Very cool 👍

I Love staying in the old motels ,,,,you can park in front of your door.. I cant stand staying in city big motels, last time i had 2 Water Buffalos in mating season above me, them dang doors slamming, another woman throwing up out her window above my room,,,,,see what i mean ??? Idaho and Texas are my favorite states,,,Florida is nice to,,,but hot and humid. Alaska was awesome back in the day, lived in Anchorage for 16 years,,,,,they wanted to be like Seattle and Portland and they did it,,,,,,,,unless you like Crime and Taxes and stupidity, cant say i would recommend it these days
I was Elk hunting in Lowell Idaho with my girlfriend in 1996,,Noraly passed thru there if she was on hwy 12 before she got to Kooskia, i didnt take home a Elk,,but i got a Wife, we got married at the Justice of Peace in Grangeville in our 7 day hunting clothes,,,,,we had our Huntingmoon night in Lowell at the motel , that had Ricky , lucy beds on our wedding night,,,ha ha,,,,we were to tired to do anything anyway

So true. Noraly meets people "where they are," and her open, sincere and friendly nature brings out the best in everyone. The Netherlands could not have a better ambassador. The fact that she takes time to teach us about the geology and history of the places she travels puts her over the top in my books.
@5:46 that house with the garage was my husband's house that he lived in when we met (15 years ago). We fixed it up and built that garage. We also fixed up the house next door just before it (not shown) and sold both and moved up near Sandpoint where we currently live. Burke is an interesting place to live. It has changed a lot since we lived there, only 1 left of the original people that were there when I met him. Lots of snow in the winter and short summers! A totally wild unique place to live!
No one in the world could pull into an interesting old west mining town in the USA with questions on her mind, and randomly meet up with the town historians ... EXCEPT Itchy Boots Noraly !!!! Your ride through the states keeps getting better and better. Another GREAT video !!

@@kevindouglas8768 Yea I’ve definitely noticed she is a little rude with certain things she saids but I 100% don’t think she realizes it is rude to say things like that after being helped by such nice people who truly love that town. She obviously is the nicest lady, it’s just part of how her culture is to be blunt like that and of course she doesn’t mean it on purpose.

@@markust8904 Honestly, Noraly is one of the few youtubers that probably doesn't need to do such things. Her content itself is more than interesting enough, I don't think she needs to boost it by creating fake stories.
Its refreshing to see little old towns like Wallace that are kept up and taken care. So many small towns like that just turn into shambles.
It helps that the Interstate highway runs by it. Brings in tourists, passersby, and money. The small towns along the backroads find something to make them boom, but in time, many will just bust and fade back into the forest.
I feel kind of bad for the lady in the blue pickup. She seems to have lived there for a lot longer than the guy from San Diego but she couldn't get a word in.

Exactly, was just about to come and comment on how they didn’t allow the old lady to share what she knew. Love itchy boots but think that was on her, she should have directed the conversation to the lady. Was a bit annoying to watch that part, other than that love the vids.

The metal cone is a “teepee burner” that was used to burn waste from a lumber mill.

A bit of a tease: the Zombie Apacolypse reference!
The rusty Wig Wam (American Indian style tent) you did not know about was a fireplace of sorts where the wood mills burned excess and unmarketable sawdust and tree bark. They were quite a sight at night because the entire steel structure would glow red hot from the heat and plenty of sparks would blow with the wind creating quite a fireworks-type display. They were sometimes referred to as "Beehive Burners".
Yes, I am glad you commented on that. Where I live there are a few of these scattered around from the old logging days, and I was told they glowed red at night. Great part of history!
Where I grew up in Wisconsin, there was one that the city burned trash in until the EPA came along.
I just watched the ride thru Wallace and with all the US Flags on the streets, the Corner of 6th St and Cedar St had the kiddy bounce house, this episode was 4th of July weekend.
I love how Noraly is surprised by the helpful strangers she meets. I figure you get what you give, and she gives so much positive joy and energy, it is bound to come back to her!! As a Canadian, I'm looking forward to the next few episodes in my country!! You Go Girl!!!

I filled my Harley at that gas station, several times in the past few years…. I was hoping you’d find the manhole cover in town, that says “The Center of the Universe!” Wallace is an amazing little mining town. Ride safe, and have fun Itchy!

I smiled at that, too. Reminded me of my rural hometown when I was a kid. People in opposite lanes would stop to chat on Main St, and the rest of traffic would just patiently sit there and wait for it, probably also waving and talking to someone else on the sidewalk while they waited.
@@WhiteTiger333 I grew up in central Virginia in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Pretty much every oncoming vehicle will wave at you when you pass, whether they know you or not. Society was a lot different (better) then.
@@charliedillon1400 It's still that way when I visit family in KY. Once I'm off the highway and headed into the hills, everyone always waves as I go past, whether another vehicle, or someone walking. Don't know what they make of my yankee (NY) plates, but they still wave...as do I, often the one finger wave. (Forefinger raised off the steering wheel for folks wondering about a one finger wave - LOL!)

Cooper Pass was still impassable due to snow at least another three weeks after you passed through the area. The up side from all the late moisture (that you unfortunately didn’t get to fully appreciate) was that the forests were especially lush and green through July when they are normally starting to brown out. Thank you for showcasing my neighborhood!

for many years, there was actually a stop light on I-90 in Wallace - the only traffic light in the US Interstate System. I remember this from the Grayhound bus trips I used to take between Missoula and Seattle. They finally removed it in 1991 and apparently, put it in its own coffin that now resides at the mining museum they have

Noraly you have got to be the only woman to travel from the Netherlands to America for the expressed purpose of riding a motorcycle over 2000 miles on dirt roads, mining trails, and logging trails. Throw in 100° desert heat and summer snow storms just to make it interesting.
When you complete your journey please remember the border agent who wanted a selfie, the generous breakfast at Denny's, the railroad engineer, free refills of coffee or soda, and of coarse Rodger with his chainsaw.

Interesting timing that she rode through Wallace and the Silver Valley on Juneteenth. For the 1892 and the 1899 riots, Buffalo Soldiers were brought in to restore order. Then again in 1910 Buffalo Soldiers were brought in to fight the Great 1910 fire. There are still some buildings in Wallace which have scorched shingles under recovered roofs.
While all the mines near Burke are abandoned, there are two active mines and one mine in restart in the area. Hecla's Lucky Friday is a few miles east of Wallace in Mullan. The Galena mine up Big Creek between Osburn and Kellogg is quite active and was the scene of a rescue in November of 2020 when a windstorm came through and knocked the electricity out for three days. The Bunker Hill mine on the south edge of Kellogg and the southern end of Wardner is currently in the process of reopening and should be producing concentrated ore by 2024. A little over twenty percent of all the lead used in World War One and the Great Patriotic War came out of the Bunker Hill. The minerals of the region are lead, zinc, and silver with trace amounts of gold. The Sunshine Mine Fire of 1972 lead to the creation of MSHA (Mine Safety and Health Administration).
Too bad virtually everything from Cataldo to Mullin is an EPA Superfund clean up site. I can remember visiting the area as a kid and the South Fork of the river running orange with mining contaminant. I remember brand new chain link fence being totally rusted out in a year from fallout from the now removed smelter in Kellogg. A beautiful stunning but conflicted area as nature tries to recover from the pressures of bygone mining practices.

My first clue was the vegetation.
The second was the fawn, which are that age about the third week of June in this area.
The third was that the equipment from the Gyro Days hadn't been taken down yet. It's possible that it was the 14th and the equipment had just been set up.

Noraly, thanks so much for taking some time to show us Wallace! I knew that it was a major mining town, but had not realized the extent of the work there. Now, I have to plan a 4,000 mile trip to visit it!
That brown teepee structure adjacent to the old train tracks is called a wigwam or beehive burner. Decades ago, the logging companies burned excess waste wood such as sawdust in those structures. The companies now use the waste wood products to manufacture particle board. Wigwam burners were big polluters in the 60's and 70's and are prohibited in most states now.
I thought the burners were to make charcoal, to heat the houses and use to heat the steam boilers of the old trains?
@@markust8904 Quite a different setup, Charcoal was made in ovens that in effect roasted the coal. Burned the hydrocarbons for the heat and left the carbon.
Interstate 90 connects Boston and Seattle. It is the longest Interstate highway in the US and was completed during the 1970s--except from one short stretch through the very narrow canyon at Wallace. It was a very difficult area to build through so that all the traffic routed down the steep slopes and through the town's streets. Wallace's one traffic signal was the only red light that you would encounter from coast to coast. The people of Wallace loved it as the mines had all closed and serving the traffic was all that was left. So they fought tooth and nail to keep Idaho from finishing the highway but in the early 1990s the inevitable happened and Wallace was bypassed. So the citizens of the town gathered to take down the last remaining traffic light, a carpenter built a coffin for it, and a solemn march of pallbearers held a funeral service for it. Today it rests in the town museum.

Born and raised in this area!! So crazy to stumble upon this video on my feed. Wallace and the whole Silver Valley has SO much history. It was great growing up here-there was always stories to be heard and places to explore. And of course, people like Roger is what makes our hometown so great! ❤

that conical rusty structure you saw was a beehive burner…there was a sawmill there at at one time, this is where the slabs , trimmings, and waste were burned
Hey Jim there is a large Beehive burner In Malakwa BC. that they turned into a bar/restaurant, called the Burner Grille., so they are not all useless structures.

Just saw a video on the Tiger Hotel, in Burke Idaho. Got some photos from back in the 1920's. Looks like some of the Hotel's ground structure is seen in Noraly's video. Also mentioned was the creek was rerouted then after the hotel was cleared the creek was routed back to original route. Interesting none the less. I wasn't looking for it, it just popped up, 9 years old.
I Loved this episode... the interaction with the locals... was awesome too...I don't think anyone else shows such towns anymore. Loving it!

I don't know about doing it now but 30 yrs back I met a slim Japanese women (from Japan) who traveled across the United States and back on a 250 motorcycle by herself....dhe rode on freeways & despite not being fluent in English she made it ..never asked her age but guess she was in her late 20's....I myself would not travel freeways with such a
small bike...

Another really interesting episode. Burke was definitley a bit creepy but the locals seemed freindly enough but then you do seem to bring out the best in people. What were the chances of meeting two local historians who happened to have photos of what you were just talking about? Great timing again Norally.

I live in Wallace, 5 to 10 mins away from that Burke location. You drove right by my house and I saw my neighbor on the corner. So bizarre! You were there during Gyro days (saw the Carnival) and passed the Center of the Universe. Glad you got to visit, the Silver Valley is a kick in the pants!
