SO scan to CAD is "send the file to China and have a bunch of cheap labor build a SketchUp model" with a 48 hour turn around? Or is the labor in Russia, India or somewhere else?
@@haokieto0 There is absolutely zero chance it is converted via software. It's 100% human conversion, if it was via computers, it would only take a matter of minutes, not 2 days.
if it is an algorithm, can they not just provide the user with the algorithm, and the user can reduce the processing time on own high-end machines rather than sending the files over the internet.

the resolution of a kine t type device is 1cm...so, the data cannot be better than that...but you show someone working on a window...windows need fitting at better than 1cm... what use is the data if its worse than the task requires?

I actually just scanned a large house like this over the holidays, and it took me about 40 minutes from beginning to end. You can definitely go back into the scan to get screenshots!

It's a mix of both software and people. We automatically do a lot of reprocessing to enhance the reconstruction, fix errors, etc. and then there is a little bit of human QA at the end for CAD-specific workflows like layering, segmenting, etc. The end-result is that while it's not instantaneous, you get something that is design-ready.
So glad you guys updated the room capture demo app and turned it into Canvas. Looks very robust and i'm excited to try the Scan to CAD service. Time to bring out my Structure sensor again! :)

Hi David! You actually can export the scans themselves for free (as a .obj) and then do whatever you want with them. Working with a mesh from a 3D reconstruction isn't something most people in the residential architecture and design world have done before, so generally people opt to use Scan To CAD, but you're definitely welcome to do the conversion manually.
Can this work with ArchiCAD? Does a user have to send the scan to your headquarters to have it translated into a BIM model or is there translation software available for the user?
I'm also an ArchiCAD user. Direct access through ArchiCAD would be great for me too. But at least I hope the developers remember that there is a world of users out there that don't use Autodesk products.

Hi Michael! The easiest way to do this would probably be using Canvas with a LiDAR-enabled iPad, and then manipulating the model in SketchUp. You can also pay people on platforms like UpWork or CrowdCAD to visualize the changes for you if you'd rather not learn SketchUp, though outsourcing something like that may be more trouble than it's worth.
Would this be able to take just a measurement of a room without objects in the room? I'm an estimate and when I go in for a job it takes me about 1 hour to measure a 1500sq ft home. And I was wondering if this app etc. Will be able to help me speed things up. With just creating a blueprint sketch of it alone without any items /furniture in the room /space???

Bruno Garcia the point field won't be very useful for vr but it looks like the (manual, judging by the turnaround time) scan makes something slightly more usable. archiviz models tend not to be made with the same things in mind as game models though so some tweaking will be required.
Hi would you be able to tell me if this can scan at millimeter or sub millimeter precision on the entire room? Assuming it's an empty room and the scanner is held & rotated extremely steady & rotation speed can be very slow, like 1 degree per second.
Hi Bruno! I suggest taking both for a spin to compare. The short version is that the end-result of a Matterport scan is a 3D tour, where you're moving between different photoshperes, whereas the end result of a Canvas scan (after going through Scan To CAD, at least) is simplified CAD of the space.

You can do multiple scans, yes - in fact many customers do this for large homes and then stitch things together into a global model. It's not optimized for a warehouse, so you might run into some limitations like range or needing to take a ton of scans, but I've seen people use Canvas in this context.
We don't have a direct, automatic pipeline between Bridge and Canvas at this time, but you can certainly use the 3D models generated by Canvas (CAD or scan) for VR experiences in Bridge.

I bought it, along with the best iPad suggested on the site, hoping to get quick 3d scans of homes to use for virtual tours. I can't even get 1 room scanned. Memory runs out before I can finish the room. After more research, it looks like Matterport was the way to go. At least I have a new iPad.

This system is very inaccurate. they say 1-2% tolerance.. so over 10 feet you are off 1-2" inches.. which is crazy... I tried it.. and tried the CAD processing, and often measurements were off 4-5".. which makes it worthless IMO
A couple observations. I am frustrated to have to buy an Apple product that will have no other use than with the Canvas but I guess it has the best camera, stabilized, on the market. Then when I asked the company how much storage I would need to minimized my cost they refused to answer and I am afraid that it is probably best to buy the 500GB after the comments I read here of people running out of space quickly on their iPad Pro. No sure. If it works it is an incredible tool for contractors, designers and architects alike. It is does not work it is a waste. I would like to read more users comments. I am not worry about the $29 to get a CAD each time.

Generally, you should scan one room at a time, and when people talk about running out of memory it's because they're trying to cram as many rooms as possible into one scan (storage is very rarely an issue).
Almost impossible to find contact information on their website. After thorough digging I found an email, emailed my question, got an auto bot response that they check their email once a month! This is not a real company in my opinion. Imagine having something small go wrong, emailing a question, getting a response, only to follow,up with another question, that is a minimum two months turn around time to get help for a product you invested serious money and even more time in. No thank you, I’ll wait until a true company developed same but better technology.

Nice. You are working in the correct direction. But too far away from something practical yet... I guess the perfect workflow would be Scan....proccess....3d Cadfile for a room, in no more than 5 minutes ... Spending money for other solutions.....not yet..

Yeah, I didn't see that guy's eye start to twitch when he busted out his iPad and started to scan, guy must be loaded! What if something goes wrong with the scan? What if you don't even notice an issue until you're back home, checking out the model in greater detail? If you've got a deadline and you can't reach customer service after hours you could be in a lot of trouble.
Isense not working with Canvas, RoomCapture does it well after a period time it not work! Please don't fuck with controlling on/off our hardware! I did not now off split company's when I bought it.

everything is automated. it uses its own software to convert the files. this eliminates the need for human labor. including the racist ones.

48 hours is a lot in a production environment, I would be able to re-topologyze and model in 6 hours....

Hello! ArchiCAD has native SketchUp import right out of the box, so you should be able to import the .skp generated from Scan To CAD.

You can definitely email the scans to yourself to do the conversion work, but you'll need to be comfortable working with a 3D mesh.

You can do multiple scans, yes - in fact many customers do this for large homes and then stitch things together into a global model. Yup! We get weird room orientations all the time - slanted roofs, curves, non-level floors, you name it.

Hi! That is quite surprising to hear and I can say for a fact we do not check our inboxes only once a month, and most inquiries to our support emails are replied within 24 hours. We do check social media less frequently (hence the delayed reply here), but our official support channels are monitored by our customer success and experience teams quite actively. Would you mind sending where you saw this "once a month" statement to support@canvas.io? I am unaware of anywhere that says that, unless it's perhaps a deprecated product line's email inbox.
More devices will start shipping with Time-Of-Flight sensors (the new iPad is a good example) and this tech will become ubiquitous.

Nice. You are working in the correct direction. But too far away from something practical yet... I guess the perfect workflow would be Scan....proccess....3d Cadfile for a room, in no more than 5 minutes ... Spending money for other solutions.....not yet..

Yeah, I didn't see that guy's eye start to twitch when he busted out his iPad and started to scan, guy must be loaded!
What if something goes wrong with the scan? What if you don't even notice an issue until you're back home, checking out the model in greater detail? If you've got a deadline and you can't reach customer service after hours you could be in a lot of trouble.
Google Xray is way better but I'm from the year 2027 and you all won't see that technology for years to come.

Isense not working with Canvas, RoomCapture does it well after a period time it not work! Please don't fuck with controlling on/off our hardware! I did not now off split company's when I bought it.
Hi Jeff, Has this "next update" occurred yet. Having issues with Canvas and iSense. Bought the whole setup....ipad air 2 and isense specifically to use the Canvas app. Any feedback wouyld be greatly appreciated.
