    Even if its rough around the edges at the moment, there is amazing potential for this. The amount of applications it can be used for and also the different disciplines that would really benefit from this (architects, engineers, surveyors, contractors etc).

    SO scan to CAD is "send the file to China and have a bunch of cheap labor build a SketchUp model" with a 48 hour turn around? Or is the labor in Russia, India or somewhere else?

    • @alexschiff1128
      @alexschiff1128 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's a mix of both software and people. We automatically do a lot of reprocessing to enhance the reconstruction, fix errors, etc. and then there is a little bit of human QA at the end for CAD-specific workflows like layering, segmenting, etc. The end-result is that while it's not instantaneous, you get something that is design-ready.

      Hi David! You actually can export the scans themselves for free (as a .obj) and then do whatever you want with them. Working with a mesh from a 3D reconstruction isn't something most people in the residential architecture and design world have done before, so generally people opt to use Scan To CAD, but you're definitely welcome to do the conversion manually.

    I am looking to do a major remodel project on my home that is 2 stories, 3000sqft, 4 bedrooms. What is the best way to get my home modeled? Buy and do myself if I am fairly technical, or find an architect and ask if they use your product? I’d like to keep my costs down.. End purpose is to simulate removing walls and extending exterior walls to see a whatif for my wife to approve. Thanks.

    • @occipitalhq
      @occipitalhq  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Michael! The easiest way to do this would probably be using Canvas with a LiDAR-enabled iPad, and then manipulating the model in SketchUp. You can also pay people on platforms like UpWork or CrowdCAD to visualize the changes for you if you'd rather not learn SketchUp, though outsourcing something like that may be more trouble than it's worth.

      Bruno Garcia the point field won't be very useful for vr but it looks like the (manual, judging by the turnaround time) scan makes something slightly more usable. archiviz models tend not to be made with the same things in mind as game models though so some tweaking will be required.

    • @alexschiff1128

      Hi Bruno! I suggest taking both for a spin to compare. The short version is that the end-result of a Matterport scan is a 3D tour, where you're moving between different photoshperes, whereas the end result of a Canvas scan (after going through Scan To CAD, at least) is simplified CAD of the space.

    A couple observations. I am frustrated to have to buy an Apple product that will have no other use than with the Canvas but I guess it has the best camera, stabilized, on the market. Then when I asked the company how much storage I would need to minimized my cost they refused to answer and I am afraid that it is probably best to buy the 500GB after the comments I read here of people running out of space quickly on their iPad Pro. No sure. If it works it is an incredible tool for contractors, designers and architects alike. It is does not work it is a waste. I would like to read more users comments. I am not worry about the $29 to get a CAD each time.

      @alexschiff1128 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello! Just saw your comment here - not sure what happened with your question about storage but I'd be happy to help. We actually discuss this in pretty great detail in these two FAQs: support.canvas.io/article/11-how-big-of-a-space-can-i-scan and support.canvas.io/article/31-what-device-should-i-use-with-canvas. Drop us a line at support@canvas.io if you still have questions after reading. Generally, you should scan one room at a time, and when people talk about running out of memory it's because they're trying to cram as many rooms as possible into one scan (storage is very rarely an issue).

    Almost impossible to find contact information on their website. After thorough digging I found an email, emailed my question, got an auto bot response that they check their email once a month! This is not a real company in my opinion. Imagine having something small go wrong, emailing a question, getting a response, only to follow,up with another question, that is a minimum two months turn around time to get help for a product you invested serious money and even more time in. No thank you, I’ll wait until a true company developed same but better technology.

      Hi! That is quite surprising to hear and I can say for a fact we do not check our inboxes only once a month, and most inquiries to our support emails are replied within 24 hours. We do check social media less frequently (hence the delayed reply here), but our official support channels are monitored by our customer success and experience teams quite actively. Would you mind sending where you saw this "once a month" statement to support@canvas.io? I am unaware of anywhere that says that, unless it's perhaps a deprecated product line's email inbox.

      Yeah, I didn't see that guy's eye start to twitch when he busted out his iPad and started to scan, guy must be loaded!
      What if something goes wrong with the scan? What if you don't even notice an issue until you're back home, checking out the model in greater detail? If you've got a deadline and you can't reach customer service after hours you could be in a lot of trouble.
