    I got myself a Vivobook 15" first and loved it such that I got a 14" for the Missus. I got the Intel version. The Asus is more expandable in RAM and Storage than most laptops. It is very affordable. Both of them I loaded upto the max of 20GB RAM and added a second 1TB HDD. That solved the large file handling capability of the machines. The good points are they have fairly good performance with the late generation chips, the keyboard is very good with good tactile feel, it has a fingerprint reader. But it has its issues. The main one being the low standard RAM and Storage that it comes in, its screen is a little dark and its not as light as other laptops of the same size, they removed fingerprint reader on later models . We both still loved our machines.

I had service insurance with Best Buy but it ended last year when the covid struck and I couldn't get service. I paid $1500 for this computer. I want to know why when anyone mentions gaming or video editing the answer is this laptop isn't the one. Does it not have an i7 processor, and a dedicated gpu? Sure the i7 processor is of the u series but still, it has an ssd and 8-16 gb of ram. So why is this considered only good for light use or students? I want something for light video editing and mainly excel use will this be fine?

      Certainly, get the Ryzen 5 4500U model with 16GB of RAM because it's cheaper than the Ryzen 7 4700U (I don't really know why you would you get a Ryzen 7 model that runs hotter and is considerably more expensive) and is really good for light 1080p/1440p video editing. Especially if you use an app that supports Vega hardware acceleration and play around with the TDP settings in Ryzen Controller while rendering videos or something to have it run cool without losing much performance

    • @one_step_sideways
      @one_step_sideways 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Depends, the M1 Macbooks are really powerful but they also cost twice as much as this and have less RAM and an irreplaceable SSD which is a buyer beware moment because of the way Unified Memory is implemented on Macbooks. You may have to somehow replace the SSD less than half a year later on an 8GB RAM 256GB SSD model of an M1 Macbook and that would be really pricey. The 16GB RAM M1 model is super expensive so you should just get a $700 Asus Vivobook S14 with 16GB RAM and a Ryzen 5 4500U and build a desktop PC for the more demanding tasks if you really want to. Or get the top of the line Ryzen 7 4700U model with 16GB RAM if you manage to find it and if the price is reasonable compared to the Ryzen 5 4500U 16GB RAM model

    3) Thin and light weight! Love, love, love!
    The negative:
    1) Horrible sound! The worst!
    2) Pairing take about 10 minutes!
    3) When using a white background/screen...it's "stained" yellow wear the keys align with screen when closed.
    I could deal with the bad sound, but the screen issue is super annoying, especially as I use this specifically for Lightroom.

    Great review! I was wondering if this laptop can run an OBS to stream on TH-cam?

    • @one_step_sideways
      @one_step_sideways 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sure, when I tested my Ryzen 5 4500U Asus Vivobook S14 I could run an OBS recording (not streaming though, I couldn't test it) at 1080p 60fps with hardware acceleration with binary/no scaling, but if you are doing some tasks like browsing the web or watching YT videos at 1080p60fps at the same time, the recording may get overloaded and you will have stuttering. So you should use the app called Ryzen Controller and make sure than your TDP is set at 25W sustained while streaming at 1080p60fps, or just lower the framerate or resolution and everything will work great. Or find a way to limit your CPU usage in the web browser and set OBS' priority to High in the settings or the Task Manager.

      NO, its setup with 512mb of vram (modern computers use 2 to 6 gb of ram or around 12 times more) which cripples the graphics performance making it an expensive paper weight. I bought it and it sucks

    • @one_step_sideways
      @one_step_sideways 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@riddellriddell You are completely wrong. It only says that it has 512MB VRAM because it's dynamic. This is very good because it takes up less RAM when you aren't gaming (many Ryzen laptops only have 6GB out of 8GB of RAM available for the system, even less so for the apps) because it leaves you with 7.4GB of RAM on the 8GB systems and 15.4GB of RAM on the 16GB systems, and when you launch the game, it just dynamically allocates more RAM for the VRAM for your games (8GB of RAM would be really not enough because of that). I got the Ryzen 5 4500U (6 core) Asus Vivobook S14 with 16GB of RAM and 512GB SSD a month ago for a very good price and it runs Halo MCC at 1080p "Original" settings with AA at 50fps and overall it's very playable. The cooling is very quiet even under max load, but you should use Ryzen Controller app to adjust your TDP for specific use cases - I had to lower the TDP from 25W down to only 10W while rendering a video in PowerDirector with HW acceleration because the CPU appeared to run at 100% for no reason - I had no performance loss but my temps improved by 40C obviously. And for gaming you should adjust the TDP to around 19W sustained and boost. The 4700U will be able to run the games better and it may be even cooler, you have to experiment with the TDP values.

    In the market for a new pc and found your video after doing some initial research. Great video man, gained a sun for sure. Just a question, for around the same sort of budget would you say it’s one of the better ones you could get? I’m a junior front-end developer and my current laptop is not coping😂

    I'm currently starting programming at university, would you recommend this laptop?

    • @one_step_sideways
      @one_step_sideways 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Especially if you use an app that supports Vega hardware acceleration and play around with the TDP settings in Ryzen Controller while rendering videos or something to have it run cool without losing much performance.
      I got the same laptop with a Ryzen 5 4500U and 16GB RAM a month ago and it works like a charm. Way better than my colleagues' laptops with 3500U and 4500U because they haven't optimised their performance and thermals with an app called Ryzen Controller. I also upgraded my cooling by repasting it with a high end Cooler Master Mastergel Maker paste and putting thermal pads across the heatsink to have the heat transfer to the cool aluminium backplate that it has, and this has improved my temps by 15C at 25W TDP, which is a boost TDP. So I can easily run it at 19W sustained and have it boost to 23W if I am working on something demanding.

      @@one_step_sideways do you think it will be good for something like Minecraft? And for schoolwork, I’m looking for a laptop for my school that I can bring home and connect too my monitor. I like gaming but I already have an Xbox, so I kinda wanna know the limitations.

    • @one_step_sideways
      @one_step_sideways 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@olid8992 I have the Ryzen 5 4500U model with 16GB of RAM. 16GB is what you need. I haven't tried playing Minecraft, but it should definitely be enough. I played Halo Reach in Halo MCC on it - I ran it at 19W TDP and there was 50FPS at Original quality at 1080p with AA on. I also played Doom Eternal at 50% dynamic resolution at 900p - it runs at almost 60fps most of the time and was overall very playable. Of course the graphics weren't really pretty when targeting 60fps. The laptop is primarily made for various kinds of work, but gaming on it is very much possible.
      You'll be able to play most games at 8-18W TDP. You'll need to experiment with playing games on various TDP levels in order to find the sweetspot of best thermals without sacrificing performance. That way you'll be able to play the less demanding games with almost no heat or on battery, which many gaming laptops can't do. Also, make sure to set a battery charging limit in MyASUS to 80% when you want to use it on the go and to 60% when you're only plugged in. That way your battery will serve you for much longer.
