1995 I contracted the DOOM2DEATH virus. Called McAfee and they sent me a free disk with their cleaner for it. Worked and I went back to gaming. Thats my story.

You're sad at the software's decline, or the guy himself? The software still exists, just under another name, and the guy is rich. I wouldn't worry too much about him. When he's sad, he can just cover himself in Vaseline, roll around in his money, and pretend he's a slug.
Problem is, he seems the sort of dude who drowns his sorrows in the hardest possible drugs. Money can't buy you happiness, but it sure can buy you misery, and possibly your own death.

This is a TV quality program. Seriously why has no one ever talked about this on a documentary because I feel like I just watched a full hour one. It's entertaining as hell, I learned a lot about virus scanning programs and it's direct and to the point. Not too fast that I can't keep up. The research you do must be extensive as fuck and I appreciate the editing.
Rewatching now due to recent news, and want to add that LGR has very good, clear, almost accent-less English. It's very easy to understand without subtitles for someone for who English is third or second language.
LGR is seriously good at this. Also, Clint's just so easy to listen to.

These Tech Tales are the best history lessons ever and I hated history class in school, not because of the subject matter, history is very interesting but because of how boring and dry our teacher was. There should be computer history as a required class for programmers honestly. Always know where we came from.

I actually liked "McAfee" when the guy himself was running it. After he sold the software with his name on it I started to jokingly call it a virus whenever I saw it on someone's machine. John McAfee is definitely a goofy guy, but he knows his stuff. I kind of wish he'd come back to the computer world and start programming again.
I think everyone wishes he'd come back to the computer world. Dude clearly needs something to ground himself.
Maybe he knew his stuff in the 80s-90s, but a lot has changed

This was very interesting, thanks for posting. On a side note, these days I wonder why people still use _any_ third party anti-virus programs at all. It seems all of them (at least the free versions) are starting to behave more like viruses, asking you to reinstall after you've uninstalled them, throwing up popups pestering you to upgrade to paid status, and worst of all, silently disabling Defender in Windows 10. (Which may be intended behavior of Windows 10 rather than the fault of the scanner, but I still don't like it.)
Even McAfee himself has said that “antivirus is dead” and there are better options now.

***** The 'Common Sense' argument has been getting less and less valid the more and more viruses evolve. Right now, you can get a virus even by going to a popular, frequently used site, like facebook, because of the ads used on the site, amoung other things 'Common Sense' isnt really a proper argument when you can get a virus without downloading anything.
I remember when I worked for GNN under AOL in the 90s I would hear of McAfee deleting boot sectors or windows startup files.

Ah, the video that got me to subscribe! Such a wild ride life has been since then, but it's been great to watch your videos along the way! And as an aside, I still recommend this video to people; the story is just so crazy, it's hard to believe it isn't a movie plot.

I'm a big fan on how impartial you are in these tech tales. You state the facts and don't embellish one way or the other, and that's hard to come by. You could have easily put a slant on this and either praised or criticized the man's actions, but instead you simply tell us what happened and why. Nicely done.

McAfee is still an industry giant for enterprise security solutions. We use it at my organization. (the one I work for, not my puny TH-cam channel)

Why is that weird? It's a relevant add to show, given the contents of the video. It would be weird if you didn't get an anti-virus add. You Tube would be wasting their money on advertisements if they kept showing the wrong ones to people, like if they showed a makeup add at videos about cars, and car part adds on videos about beauty for example.
I got a Wix web builder add, slightly less relevant but still related to computers I guess.

I guess that's one inherent "downside" to anti-virus and anti-malware software, in terms of perception. If it's doing its job well in a non-intrusive way - it'll _appear_ like nothing is happening or being done.
Vacuum cleaner makers make their products noisy for that reason. More noise=more suck in consumer's mind. Same with PSU manufacturers, too many RMAs on working products because the fan didn't need to spin on quite mode and the owner thought it was broken.

I love these kinds of videos, between this, oddware and reviewing old tech and gamess I played as a kid this is one of my most favorite TH-cam channels. But I do have one problem, I'm running out of LGR videos to watch that I haven't already seen.

I am now going to call viruses "data diddlers." That is the greatest term I've ever heard.
McAfee Antivirus software has always been known as a major system resource hog. It always ends up using the majority of a computer's resources, with that being the memory. In fact, if you go online there are many websites where people have had to deal with their computers slowing as a result of the aforementioned issue (me included). The major culprit was McAfee's real time scanning which ate up a lot of system resources. Suffice to say, the last time that and the only time I used the McAfee Antivirus software was years ago and I've never intended on using it every again. Thanks for the great video!

McAfee...a piece of software I deteste with a passion. I got a virus a copy years ago which (interestingly) put adverts, of the pop-up and non-pop up variety, on any non-Google owned site. Yet that shitty programm couldn't do a thing. Thus I installed AVG and it solved the problem in minutes, unlike McAfee who refused to do anything other than scans.
John McAfee passed away yesterday at 23rd of June 2021, but his legacy shall live on in the millions of computers saved, including mine, from viruses, with the help of his McAfee Antivirus
I binged Halt and Catch Fire recently. Having seen this video, I caught the clear inspiration for where one of the characters goes in season 3. I was only slightly disappointed when the character didn't get as crazy as McAfee is. This disappointment was nullified by how good season 4 was.
Great show for anyone watching this video or any of LGR's Tech Tales from the '80s and '90s.
