    This, with glazed ham, ambrosia salad, and a bowl of corn that was always left in the microwave until it was time to do dishes, will forever bring back memories of Easter dinners at my Grandma Hilda's. The corn flakes were always my favorite! My mom still has sunflower casserole dish that my grandma baked them in!

    My aunt makes this but with ruffles on top but not as finely crushed as this. It's super good.

      I’m making it on Easter Monday, tomorrow. I will use the corn flakes on top, however, I will also be using the dried onions which come in an envelope. They’re like dried onion rings. They are so good and I can see where they will be kind of like adding potato chips. Can’t wait to make it.

    You make it the exact same way I do except I use the corn flakes and I use the frozen o'Brian potatoes! Oh and half a Velveeta cheese block!👍

    @Mel Lockcuff, I once had to make several of these casseroles for the church we attended, and two of them needed to be Gluten-free as well. I ended up doing the topping on those two with Gluten-free Chex cereal. You can find it just about at any chain grocery store. Turned out fantastic

    Yes My Grandma Helen always did a version of this with diced ham and diced hash browns, not shredded. Making Your Recipe now, with these additions and no added salt. Breton Butter Crackers instead of Cornflakes. I should have got Low Sodium Cream of Chicken. I have used the Gluten free Cream of Chicken from Safeway.

    I made this for a party last night (Wednesday) OMGOSH I didn't bring any leftovers home everyone loved them they were gone within a hour ,They were macnifacent the corn flakes didn't even get soft it so crunchy ,Thank you so much I'm making them again for Thanksgiving 30 ounces of hashbrowns made so much I wanted leftovers

    You're not gluten sensitive. you're suffering from ROUNDUP poisoning.
    In the United States, Roundup is used to Ripon the soybeans, wheat, and corn so the farmer can harvest with just one pass over the field.
    Europe has outlawed Roundup on all their farms. You can eat gluten in Europe with no side effects.

      When I do it, I do cover it for the beggining and towards the end, like the last 5 min, take aluminum off to get the cornflakes crispy!

    In Australia ALL our hash browns come as frozen oval or triangle patties - not loose bits like yours. What do i do then?

      It might be possible to break them up into little pieces. This requires thawing them ahead of time. I hope this helps.

      Calabrese, you could try it, but I don't know that I would like this recipe with Cheese-It's. The texture and flavor are both completely different.

    So, would you bake it for an hour and then freeze it, or prepare and freeze it, and cook it when you thaw it out. That wasn’t real clear to me. Thank you!

      I was wondering the same thing! I bet it'd be great. You might just have to cook it a little longer, covered and then uncover halfway through the cooking, and add the topping. Otherwise cooking longer would burn the topping. Happy 4th!!

      The corn is gluten free , but they add malt to the Kellog’s Corn Flakes and that contains gluten.

      I see. That's probably why. Fresh potatoes will certainly take longer to cook. You can definitely use fresh potatoes, but this recipe and its bake times are written for using frozen pre-cooked hash browns. I'm sorry it didn't work out for you! You might consider boiling your potatoes ahead of time, 'til tender.
