Update: JELOS dropped an update today that fixes screen tearing on the PowKiddy RGB10 Max 3 Pro. There are still a lot of other quirks and bugs to work out, but this was probably the biggest dealbreaker for me, and I'm happy to see the progress. See it in action: twitter.com/RetroGameCorps/status/1694841359537217623
@Retro Game Corps Hey Russ, can I ask for a favour. I really like the pocketability test you do. You are the only person which actually does this real-world test and shows others, so kudos, and know this separates you from others. My favour is: In the future can you also do the test alongside another device For example, put your phone in your pocket to show it fits in your pocket and is comfortable.... then show the device which might "technically fit" but is pretty uncomfortable, hence calling it as something as portable but not pocketable. You can throw it in your backpack to show it is portable, but then so is something else like the Valve SteamDeck, making the choice easy between the two. Basically what you did, but with an extra 30 seconds in the video to give everyone a better idea. Let me know if this is a bad video idea, or not. Cheers mate, and happy gaming!
❤. Mine is getting delivered later today. I'm currently developing a custom frontend (written in Go) and Linux distro for it, and have plans to opensource it. The design principles are significantly different than JELOS. Stay tuned...
Sounds great. Another linux based front end that does functionally the same exact thing for 99% of the user base. You guys keep reinventing the wheel instead of making the wheel better.
@@JgHaverty Such a terrible outlook. I write software for myself, and to familiarize myself with languages or libraries I'm unfamiliar with. If other people use my software then cool.
That's really my biggest complaint about these devices, there is very little down time between them and they're all eerily similar. I don't find myself caring for much of the minute differences and it just seems to be a lot of e-waste. I'd rather have longer gaps between iterations because the market is just so saturated.
my brother in christ, real ps3 emulation doesn't even exist on android devices. most pc handhelds that run WINDOWS can't run ps3 games that demanding at default settings. you're not going to find ANYTHING for the next 5 years.@@CodeSerial
The craziest thing about all these handhelds is that it seems like Retroid has some kind of iron-clad patent on stacked shoulder buttons on a retro emulation device. I'm kidding, but I don't get why we see so few of them, especially when they're geared towards PS1 games and higher where side by side buttons just don't make a lot of sense.
Stacked shoulders are definitely more comfortable, but a flat slab suits going in a bag a lot more, you only have to worry about the analogue sticks getting caught, not things on both sides.
@@phattiger1506I previously thought this but after trying the the rg405m it made me not want to play games that utilized it, which defeats the point of it since I could just carry a lighter cheaper dpad focused device for PS1 and bellow
Yeah, the Retroid devices are SO CLOSE to perfect, but I'd really like to get something a bit bigger than the iPhone SE display they all come with. If they give me that iPhone 8+ 1080p display at 5.5 inches on the Pocket 4 and I'll be there, even if it's not any faster than my RP3+.
There already is in my opinion. It's the Steam Deck if you don't mind it being huge. It's great for retro games. The 1 terabyte SSD for it is also cheap now.

Interesting! I received my unit on the weekend, and I was surprised that it came preloaded with Jelos. I was anticipating on having to install it myself.
Love your videos Russ. I would like to watch a video from you about the PSP. Last year I bought one for my self and since then I bought some broken PSP's to learn how to repair them. It's a great experience and still a great handheld for retro gaming. It became my favourite console to play GBA and PS1 games.
Husband plays video and pauses. Me, “you don’t have to pause it.” Husband, “but how are you gonna keep up with retro game corps lore if you don’t watch it!”
I believe I know the issue with the sound. The red film on the speakers is a protective film. The little pull tabs give it away that they should have been removed after installation. That could be the reason why it sounds so bad. The audio is just being forced against that film and it cause distortion.
Great video as usual! As for the audio issue, there's a good chance that you're just getting software distortion. I would look at the system internal volume levels looking at the amplification sub-menu from Retroarch or even running alsamixer from a terminal if possible and set the volume/amplification to a lower level there.
I just got my unit delivered last week. The only 2 issues I experienced are the screen tearing and sleep-wake function not working. Other than these two, the handheld works fine. PSP emulation is great. Buttons are unexpectedly nice. I am quite sure the 2 issues will be solved by the JELOS team in the future. But don't hold your breath for GC or PS2 emulation. Persona 2 runs perfectly though. GOW2 is playable but you need to ticker with the settings. Overall, this is a nice and powerful device for the money you pay.
So apparently Powkiddy is doing a pre-release for the RBG10Max 3 (NOT PRO) model now, and I was wondering if you had a chance to look into it and determine if there's any significant difference with the Pro version? Seems a bit weird that the Non-Pro version is releasing now, and I'm curious to see if it addresses any of the cons you discussed.

It’s wild to think that your start with all this was primarily thanks to the RG351p. Cause that’s the first retro handheld I bought, and ultimately how I found out about this channel.
The buttons are about the same size as the 351p but look at the placement; On the 351p they're as close to the edge of the screen as possible but here they're as close to the grip edge as possible, which kills it.
Hi. I also own an rgb10max pro 3 and while I was filming my video review I had those crashes too. For a moment I thought my unit was faulty but now I see it's a common issue
Grazie ancora ❤
Got my powkiddy x55 a week ago, was not expecting the enjoyment I've had so far. Jelos OS came updated as well as all of the classic Mario/DK/Zelda/Kirby games (even on n64), almost 300 n64 games to be specific.. A lot of it is bloat, but unlike the powkiddy rgb20s that bricked on me first time removing roms.. The X55 not only let me remove this bloat, it also let me add roms to the original TF2 sd card. I didn't even have to set n64 & dreamcast to performance mode, but for the best performance I would still recommend. I will now be content with waiting a year or two for something around the same price and can play ps2 and etc. This is a great handheld for any begninner and someone like me who has a few emulators and only likes to make minor tweaks. One small gripe is that he ps1 and psp selection on the x55 was a little small but nothing that can't be changed.
@@DerkaVideos I would say so. I do not own the retroid but If you are like me, i was new into emulating. So, powkiddy and anbernic were my first two options. I was able to easily install a new version of Jelos os to the x55, keep most of the roms that came pre-installed, add more roms, and it seems to run a few high-end games better than my rg353vs even with jelos os as well.
I really don't know what to purchase between this and the pocket 2s. The better performance on the 2s are very interesting, but it's a bit more expensive (150 vs 133 for the powkiddy in Europe) and the smaller screen seems like a dealbreaker to me I would love to enjoy psp titles and I feel like 3.5 inches is a bit small. it would be my first handheld, but I don't mind tweaking a bit with it since I think it's a fun world to explore!
I tried the Pickle OS in this handheld and the only way I could get things done was with a mouse. I also got wifi working so that was a good sign of things to come. What I could not do and that was a major bummer was to get AetherSX2 to recognize the actual buttons of the handheld. PES 6 booted fine but I could not get past the initial memory card configuration because the buttons are not recognized by the app... On JELOS the game was playable but with frame and audio quirks. I'm really hoping that the game will work better on future CFW's because PES is presumably a less demanding game than the final fantasy that TAKI UDON showed in his video running with no issues on JELOS. The current state of this handheld is "patient tinkerers only"...
UPDATE: this console was dead and buried but the fantastic team from ROCKNIX pretty much saved it. Still no HDMI but it can now be normally switched off from the menu.
As somebody that is just looking to get into retro emulations I appreciate the warning upfront on this one. Right now I’m just looking for something to play the old Pokémon games that will save. But not opposed to spending a little bit more for more console options
@RetroGameCorps pls help me with the bios thinngy cuz i did open it once, installed os but the os didint load so im trying to open bios again but it doesnt open
I have just updated to the latest version of JelOS and the audio crackling is still present. I’m really concerned that a lot of these issues are hardware based.
Good review. Unfortunately the clicky start and select buttons on recent powkiddy devices are enough of a problem for me to be a deal breaker. It stops me playing my rk2023 when the noise could annoy people.
@@JgHaverty lots of old games require pressing start a bunch of times to start the game, select game options, skip cutscenes and more. And select is required every time saving or loading save states or quitting games.
@@Autotrope I mean I understand the issue, but in the context of you clackity clacking away on the buttons, dpad and shoulder buttons, a little click will be as mindless as a mouse click. Its quite literally a non issue; if you dont like it thats fine, but its a really dumb reason to preclude you from getting something. Even typing on a laptop keyboard will make an analogous level of noise here lol
Russ I will have you know that I am a Linux enthusiast and I am far from relatively small LOL :P I think you'll find most Linux enthusiasts are rather large LOL Great video as always :)
Too bad for these issues. I really want a Linux-friendly portable console. I need to check on the progress made with the Anbernic 405M custom firmwares.
@@Yixdy I just want a plug and play RETROgaming device with a decent screen size. If it can play up to PS2/GameCube, I'd be happy. I don't need more from a portable device (I play modern games on my PS5 and play up to PS3 games on my arcade cabinet, with Batocera installed inside on a PC). The Steam Deck is overkill for me: it costs more than 3 times the price of a Retroid Pocket 3+/Anbernic 405M/PowKiddy RGB10Max3. I could buy one, but it would be wasted given what I would use it for.
Classic Powkiddy, snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. I think they should have released this as a 'developer edition', to get it out there but also make it clear that it's not ready for everyday use.
I have one too, it's super cool! The Dingoo a320 as well. I feel like the GCW-Zero/RG350 era is a bit different from the RK3326 and beyond that we're in now, maybe because these handhelds are EmulationStation/RetroArch based instead of GMenu2x with standalone OPKs. I started my channel and site with the RG350 but things didn't get super serious for me until the RK3326 :)
No it didn't, the most earliest most noticeable Retro Handheld was the Mega Duck released back in 1993, later we got GamePark Holdings GP32 2001, after was the Dingoo A320 in 2009, I can obviously go into way more depth into this subject but these are only three notable examples of Retro Gaming devices that came WAY before the GCW Zero.
I just want to suggest with SF, try putting your thumb in the center of the dpad and tilt it to do moves, it's something to get used to but it's way better than grinding your thumb tip off!
I own an original miyoo mini and anbernic 35xx so am happy at the moment. I do however like the look of the powkiddy x55. The screen looks amazing and it seems to have a decent performance for £70.
I think you just coined a new saying for handheld devices with your, "Hadoukenable and Shoryukenable," statement and I wouldn't be surprised if we hear other review channels for handhelds copy you. Good job sir.
Russ, do you have a guide or insight on how to map the buttons in Killer Instinct properly? I have it running on my phone through RetroArch and it runs great. I'm just not certain to map the buttons to my Bluetooth controller so I can play it well. Thanks.
Russ, is the RGB30 (1:1 screen horizontal handheld) on it's way to you by any chance? Taki made a feature on it but missed - what to me is obvious - plug a keyboard in and run the full Pico-8 fantasy console. Basically, can the RGB30 work as a sleek little mini-developer kit with built in controls for the games you write?
Hi, yes I have it. The Linux port of Pico-8 works when using the Raspberry Pi version of the app, but if I remember correctly it doesn't port the whole dev environment, just the splore menu (which I did test and it works great). I'll see what I can do about getting into the dev side with a keyboard before I make my review!
I would have loved that chip in the X55 which I have just bought for a no brainer price, shipped to the UK. Using your discount code BTW. Just love the screen and with tinkering a bit can get some reasonable performance in the higher end emulation, Although nothing to shout about I admit.
What no brainer price are we talking about? I'm also in Europe and was pondering to get one, but the chipset and no PS2 at that price are making me reconsider
Thank your for your work, Russ... been a sub since day one. I have an RK2023 which I love but I need something with a better screen sine my eyesight is not what it used to be, I am debating between this and the RP3+, I used to love android handhelds but playing with my RK2023 has rekindled the love I had for Linux back in the RG351P days. Let me know your thoughts
That's too bad about all the issues. I wanted to preorder one of it for my 10-year-old nephew. Should I order the PowKiddy x55 that the reviewer mentioned in the video instead, or are there better options in this price range? Many thanks.
Not having Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or the stacked L1/L2 triggers is an absolute deal breaker especially over 100 bucks. You can get the Powkiddy X55 for a couple dollars less. Albeit the X55 is slightly less powerful but it does just about everything and has Wi-Fi plus Bluetooth, second SD slot, stacked L/R triggers, 5.5in higher resolution display. For me I don't see why anyone would go with the RGB10 Max 3 Pro over the X55.
I re-flashed my RGB10 Max2 Pro with the Dec 1st 2023 version of JELOS following your instructions. It worked and the device boots and plays games! Great instructive video by the way! However my reason for flashing it was to enable the HDMI output. Still I can't use the Global Hot Keys [L1] + [Start] + [Select] buttons to toggle the HDMI output. I also tried a build from early in Feb. 2024, however the device would boot but would not display the Emulation Station. Does anyone have any tips for enabling the HDMI output? Is there a specific image I can flash? Are the hotkeys on the JELOS page for the HDMI toggle accurate for this device? Why isn't there a "Display Settings" menu option for toggling HDMI. When I press the [L1] + [Start] + [Select] buttons together the device just goes into the the normal menu that simply pressing the [Start] button would open.
I have two requests for heavier arcade games, if you don't mind trying: - Deathsmiles (this runs borderline/slightly stuttery on T618) - Akai Katana (essentially unplayable on T618, maybe newer SoCs will be better) Thanks!
It is clear that this device is a really bad device. I should have watched this video as soon as I purchased this device, but I didn't know anything and tried various things to update, but I ran into a problem with the SD card slot being defective, which can never happen in other companies' devices, and I had to go to China to get after-sales service for this damn device. I have to send it back to , but I can't wait that long. What is certain is that RGB10Max3 Pro is trash and I think we should improve our intelligence and live a better life by updating the Nintendo Switch or purchasing a PlayStation Xbox. This video is really important. It is a must-see video for those who accidentally purchased RGB10Max3 Pro
Could be a shot in the dark here, but I wonder if the red protective stickers are contributing to the speaker distortion? Like they are causing a back feed rattle effect.
@@RetroGameCorps Oh, that's a shame. Then you probably got bad speakers. Hopefully Powkiddy will contact you soon and provide you a functioning sample. The issues with the crashing on harder to emulate games seem also a bit hardware related. Taki also made a review of the RGB10 Max 3 and he did not mention or have these issues.
Mine bricked. I can’t get it in to recovery mode and when I try to make an SD card to flash the OS (using the hidden reset button) the SD card is flashed instead of the device. The result is JELOS running off the SD card until I power down in which case the device won’t start up again
I got it running. I had to open it up to access the reset switch. I wish I could tell you the steps for I forget. There were some instructions on the site- I followed the steps like 5 times and it finally worked.
Hopefully there is a better update soon. It’s manageable but even with some tinkering its still a bit of a hassle. Very hit & miss, any speaker upgrades? Mine are extremely low….

The better performance on the 2s are very interesting, but it's a bit more expensive (150 vs 133 for the powkiddy in Europe) and the smaller screen seems like a dealbreaker to me I would love to enjoy psp titles and I feel like 3.5 inches is a bit small. it would be my first handheld, but I don't mind tweaking a bit with it since I think it's a fun world to explore!
absolutely loving die hard in the background!
How does this compare to the X55 which looks like the Max 2?
I just ordered x55 and you release this video.
x55 is still a better choice it seems !!
But not opposed to spending a little bit more for more console options
i think this device is by far the best match to your shorts with that colour
@RetroGameCorps pls help me with the bios thinngy cuz i did open it once, installed os but the os didint load so im trying to open bios again but it doesnt open
It's in my top 3, I had an issue with the battery, but after a few chargers, it came right❤
I have just updated to the latest version of JelOS and the audio crackling is still present. I’m really concerned that a lot of these issues are hardware based.
Yeah I definitely think the speaker issues are hardware related, sounds like you lost the lottery just like me! :(
Good review. Unfortunately the clicky start and select buttons on recent powkiddy devices are enough of a problem for me to be a deal breaker. It stops me playing my rk2023 when the noise could annoy people.
... how often are you pressing start and select? Lol. Much more egregious issues with this device aside from the absolutely modest click noise.
Good luck my brother
Russ I will have you know that I am a Linux enthusiast and I am far from relatively small LOL :P
I think you'll find most Linux enthusiasts are rather large LOL
Great video as always :)
The reviewer of this device that we all been waiting!
Yep I'm with you on that. Such potential, yet powkiddy let it down in some way.
Too bad for these issues. I really want a Linux-friendly portable console.
I need to check on the progress made with the Anbernic 405M custom firmwares.
Er.... Steam deck??
@@Yixdy I just want a plug and play RETROgaming device with a decent screen size. If it can play up to PS2/GameCube, I'd be happy. I don't need more from a portable device (I play modern games on my PS5 and play up to PS3 games on my arcade cabinet, with Batocera installed inside on a PC).
The Steam Deck is overkill for me: it costs more than 3 times the price of a Retroid Pocket 3+/Anbernic 405M/PowKiddy RGB10Max3.
I could buy one, but it would be wasted given what I would use it for.
Steam deck too big
I like my deck a lot but i still like to use other more lighter devices
I like how Mario and Daisy are still next to each other 😄
Classic Powkiddy, snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.
I think they should have released this as a 'developer edition', to get it out there but also make it clear that it's not ready for everyday use.
Hoping firmware will resolve most of these issues, great review sir!
Jelos team is fixing cpu hope to have it fixed on next firmware release.
Could you peel that red film off of your speakers?
I did just that after filming the tear down segment, unfortunately it didn’t make any change to the speaker quality.
Master Corp @RetroGameCorps. Did you can install Ubuntu in this device or in Odroid Ultra?
Technically the GCW-Zero started the entire retro-game handheld craze back in 2013. I've still got mine and it still works just fine.
What are your impressions on the retroid pocket 2s coming out?
I think it's bizarre that the speakers don't even shoot out of the grills. They're just directed into the case.
I own an original miyoo mini and anbernic 35xx so am happy at the moment.
I do however like the look of the powkiddy x55.
The screen looks amazing and it seems to have a decent performance for £70.
I love watching reviews for handhelds I probably will never own due to my recent purchase of a steam deck lmao
I think you just coined a new saying for handheld devices with your, "Hadoukenable and Shoryukenable," statement and I wouldn't be surprised if we hear other review channels for handhelds copy you. Good job sir.
So close to the $100 PSP machine that I have been looking for
I should get mine next week.
Should do a video on the og pocket go, round 30 bucks, always bring it when im in the field
The Retroid Pocket 2S looks interesting, do you think it may have a Linux build one day? Thank you for the video BTW, I also love my Powkiddy X55 :)
My device don‘t show 3ds or PsP on the Menu. How can I fix this too play 3ds or PsP games ?
I would have loved that chip in the X55 which I have just bought for a no brainer price, shipped to the UK. Using your discount code BTW. Just love the screen and with tinkering a bit can get some reasonable performance in the higher end emulation, Although nothing to shout about I admit.
What no brainer price are we talking about? I'm also in Europe and was pondering to get one, but the chipset and no PS2 at that price are making me reconsider
@@theMeshtar £67 shipped to the UK, direct from Powkiddy.
@@thegrumpygamer3081 now that's a barjen! How did you manage that?
Can you do a revisit of this with how it is with the new os
Thank your for your work, Russ... been a sub since day one. I have an RK2023 which I love but I need something with a better screen sine my eyesight is not what it used to be, I am debating between this and the RP3+, I used to love android handhelds but playing with my RK2023 has rekindled the love I had for Linux back in the RG351P days. Let me know your thoughts
What is the theme in JELOS? I want this for my steamdeck!
That's too bad about all the issues. I wanted to preorder one of it for my 10-year-old nephew. Should I order the PowKiddy x55 that the reviewer mentioned in the video instead, or are there better options in this price range? Many thanks.
How are you getting things from Powkiddy? I ordered an X55 on July 7. Still waiting.
Hello, please share your complete library of games
Not having Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or the stacked L1/L2 triggers is an absolute deal breaker especially over 100 bucks. You can get the Powkiddy X55 for a couple dollars less. Albeit the X55 is slightly less powerful but it does just about everything and has Wi-Fi plus Bluetooth, second SD slot, stacked L/R triggers, 5.5in higher resolution display. For me I don't see why anyone would go with the RGB10 Max 3 Pro over the X55.
Russ is the man my go to gaming, guru 👾🕹️👍🏽🥇
Let’s do this! 💪🏼🍻
Hi. Is this worth buying now? Does it have better software options/less issues/good performance across the board... or is it still a nightmare?
yeah man, i wanna do it
I have two requests for heavier arcade games, if you don't mind trying:
- Deathsmiles (this runs borderline/slightly stuttery on T618)
- Akai Katana (essentially unplayable on T618, maybe newer SoCs will be better)
Thanks!
Lol the street fighter test terminology
It’s crazy how quickly these devices are put out.
Nice recap of the history of hardkernel clone devices. Imho the rgb10pro is the nicest of them ;-)
Don’t know where in Hawaii you live, but hope you’re safe from the fires!
It looks like development for JelOS is dead. What are our options now?
Wondering if the Odin is still a relevant handheld option in 2023
Could be a shot in the dark here, but I wonder if the red protective stickers are contributing to the speaker distortion? Like they are causing a back feed rattle effect.
I removed the stickers and unfortunately it didn’t affect the audio quality ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
20:50 you can just format it instead of deleting partitions...
Two weeks of waiting and mine finally arrived today… DOA 😢. Hopefully the exchange process is smooth.
Hey Russ. That red foil on the speakers, can you try removing them? I believe they forgot it on top, and that is what's causing your audio issues.
Yes, I removed the red stickers during my tear down, it didn’t affect the audio quality.
@@RetroGameCorps Oh, that's a shame. Then you probably got bad speakers. Hopefully Powkiddy will contact you soon and provide you a functioning sample. The issues with the crashing on harder to emulate games seem also a bit hardware related. Taki also made a review of the RGB10 Max 3 and he did not mention or have these issues.
damn. I was going to give the same reply. too bad it didn't fix it
Mine bricked. I can’t get it in to recovery mode and when I try to make an SD card to flash the OS (using the hidden reset button) the SD card is flashed instead of the device. The result is JELOS running off the SD card until I power down in which case the device won’t start up again
Did you ever figure out a workaround to flash the internal storage and get it running, or is it still bricked
I got it running. I had to open it up to access the reset switch. I wish I could tell you the steps for I forget. There were some instructions on the site- I followed the steps like 5 times and it finally worked.
@markgilbertson9722 that's awesome. Thank you for replying. I'm in the process of doing the same, so far it looks to be working.
Um, looks like there are plastic protective tabs on the speakers?! Would explain the audio issue.
I removed those after doing the tear down, no change to the audio quality.
Does adding a WiFi dongle on this device enable it to use Netplay? Or just to update JelOS?
I received mine recently and the screen doesn't work and i have no idea what to do to fix it.
They're a lot easier to setup now then a few years ago.
Hopefully there is a better update soon. It’s manageable but even with some tinkering its still a bit of a hassle. Very hit & miss, any speaker upgrades? Mine are extremely low….
think after seeing all these handhelds the last ten years ill just keep going with my S7 Edge and Note 2 until 2028
What’s that theme called? Really love it!
❤ loving mine...great value for little money.
Fantastic review and details for sd card management. Really want to add GameCube, Saturn etc.but not entirely sure how....already have Jelos but these aren't on the standard sd. Anyone got help...im sure its fairly straightforward.👍🏻🇬🇧 Peter
