On the front of your building, your siding ends above the OSB floor, so there's potential for water to get into the ends of the OSB. One option would have been longer sheets of siding, though your local lumber yard might not have had it. Another thing you can do now is to add some metal flashing. For example, a 4" piece of aluminum flashing slid 2" under the siding, overlapping 2" down on the surface, that would be a great way to protect that area. You can cover it back up with the trim you're using right now.
Yeah for some reason the siding ended up being too short and all they had were 8ft. That’s a great tip, we definitely don’t want any water getting in! We’re total amateurs so any advice helps.
The first thing I spotted was the “Bean Boots”! Second was the name of your site! I live in Cumberland County, have a camp in Franklin County! Keep up the good work, and enjoy!!!
Good grief what size is that window opening? That’s a big hole…very nice job and good for you guys for getting out there and going for it even though your not experts. Girl in the woods is I’m sure proud!
Amazing you figured out that plywood is not supposed to be less than a foot from the soil There's plenty of other channels on TH-cam where they can't figure out OSB and plywood it's not designed to be basically in-ground contact it's required to be 12 inches above the soil
Because we didn’t have any idea what we were doing we followed bushradical and girlinthewoods build and they steered us in the right direction. Plus I love the look of it being elevated.
@@TheDoerDuo by the way, I did read your description of the video, to keep from getting the comment crossed up I answered to the one I was reading at the time, have a good one
It’s such a small structure that it doesn’t need bolts. It’s the size of a small shed 10x12. So far it’s held up really well. We’ve been booked with Airbnb all summer with no issues :)
Headers are always nice above windows , perhaps next time consider wall height to fit your plywood siding . So many what not to do ......The music was nice .
Yeah the plywood only came in 8ft boards so we had to make do with the outcome unfortunately. Considering all of our beginner mistakes we still managed to make it work. If there’s a will, there’s a way. 😃
You know that sound you get when either the drill is not straight or the bit your using is the wrong one for the screw. Bite the bullet and get yourself an Impact driver. As for that overlap at the bottom of your wall boards you could get a metal flashing which will go under the wall covering and over the wood. Then you will just have to paint the bottom boards. Just a thought. If I remember rightly a normal windowsill angle is 22.5 degrees. that will not only cover the bottom of the windows but also that wall sheeting so it sheds water..
@@TheDoerDuo Often, the ‘negative’ comments I believe are from people who simply want to be helpful in their own way (?) . Of course, you already know you can study building science and make improvements next time. I wouldn’t let the negative comments bother you at all. Just water off a duck’s back. Of course your cabin isn’t ‘perfect’, but it’s your first one. It’s much better than a tent. Haha. Your goal was to build a cabin, not the Buckingham Palace. Hello. Would you write to me a dimensions of the house by the deck ? A Length and a width in meters. And also a size of pillar 200x200mm., or 250x250mm. ? Thank you before.
Hey there! I just found these calculations from google 10x12ft (3.048m x 3.6576m) and when you say pillar are you asking about the walls? One wall is 8ft and the other is 6ft.
That’s because it is almost the exact same build. We’ve never built anything before so we followed his step by step video to show everyone that it can be done even by people with zero building experience.
Your siding dosnt cover your rim board and dosnt hit your top plate and it should. Screwing a trim piece on to cover the gaps aren't structural and at the rim board definitely dosnt help shed the water.
Foundation must be below the frost line. 4-6" gravel underneath blocks for drainage. Foundation wood block higher up away from standing water, you'll have to jack it up to fix.
"You work with what you got" isn't a valid excuse to stand on a bunch of 5 gal buckets. You could literally build a ladder or step stool with the scraps you've accumulated.
We don’t claim to be skilled carpenters, we’re super transparent about being amateurs and having the courage to get it done. She is still standing strong not to mention profiting us big time so I guess all of our mistakes were worth it! 👍
You need to be nicer to your wife. We all get frustrated but be nicer to her And most people level the concrete fittings before building on top of them
Looks great! And best of all its NY Giants colors!! All the best, former NY Giant, Gary Reasons #55! Enjoy your cabin!!
Thank you! It’s been a really fun project. My father and I are lifelong New York Giants fans!
Every project is a learning experience. Your next build will be twice as good.

They are 2x6

12 Inc on center for your wall studs
Good to know for future builds
Can I just recommend that you remove the horizontal exterior trim along the bottom edge? It will collect water and rot out your wallboards.
Thanks for the recommendation! 👍

It’s been a year and luckily we haven’t had any water issues so far. Maybe there isn’t only one way of doing things 🤷
Awesome you did not build it right on the ground like a lot of people have been doing on TH-cam say your structure will rot to pieces
