  • We build an off grid cabin in the woods and this video shows the building process start to finish on the outside of the cabin. The finished space is 55 square feet (5.1 square meters) and has a 30 square foot (2.8 square meter) loft. We'll have another video up soon of us building our furniture for the inside.

      I love the king posts on the ends of the roof. Do you plan on using a pomoly wood stove for heat? Pomoly makes hi quality wood stoves. Beautiful cabin. Is the refectix adequate insulation?

    • @tylersmith293
      @tylersmith293 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +21

      Would have used set in place holddowns as opposed to tap cons. But solid work. Also I would have used an impact driver over a drill. And cantilevered deck for more living space.

    • @2withnature
      @2withnature  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +20

      Ya we're really glad with how that turned out. No, we do have a pomoly stove but we're going to keep it for our tents since it's so portable and the stove we're gonna use is a little bigger so we can put bigger logs in to burn longer. Don't know if it's adequate honestly, this is our first cabin so we don't have anything to compare it to. The floor gets cold, but we bought warm slippers to leave there. I heard bat insulation in the floor is a nightmare when it comes to mice and rats so I did the foil insulation for simplicity more than effectiveness.

    Watching this reminds me of when I built my little 10x20 cabin in the 90's. A couple of things came to mind. First, I really wish I had power tools at the build site. My arms still ache 27 years later. Second, I really under-engineered my design. You use way more bracing than I did. Lastly, I really didn't know what I was doing.
    The cabin was all framed in and still stands today, though I never got around to finishing the inside or putting siding on (military things popped up). We go out to the property in Montana every couple of years and I'm always amazed that the cabin is still there. It's a little piece of my past.

    • @2withnature
      @2withnature  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +16

      That's awesome, I couldn't imagine how hard it would be without power tools. I think that would be awesome to revisit this in 20 and 30 years and take us back. This project was so much fun it was the highlight of the year for us for sure. Thanks for watching Joel, and go finish the inside of yours!

      @@2withnature Hammering for hours driving 16 penny nails in over your head was awesome, but you haven't LIVED until you've cut OSB sheathing with a crappy hand saw! I tried to cut as much of the dimensional lumber as I could in Colorado, then drive it up to Montana when I was able to build. Not a lot of battery tools back then, that I could afford, and heard nothing but bad news about generators ruining AC equipment, so there I was. Ignorant, but willing.

    • @2withnature
      @2withnature  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

      Man I probably would've done the OSB with an axe instead of a hand saw. But the more you sacrifice for something the more you love it.

      actually, i think you did know what you were doing. you made a 10 x 20 cabin while these people are making an idiotically small house with a loft and using lots of material to do it. They could have built a sturdy structure with a much larger footprint all on one floor without using lots of material. but they are virtue signaling as to what a small foot print they are making. everyone wants to see how tiny they can go because that's the latest fad. It's like when people make houses out of shipping containers and by the time they finish cutting out walls and windows and putting on a roof, or joining multiple containers together like a habitrail, family members climbing over each other all the time, they could have built a normal small house. even a 20 x 20 house with an open floor plan would go up quickly, and you could actually lay down on the floor and stretch your arms out without hitting a wall! imagine that!

    • @JoelWelter
      @JoelWelter 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      While I agree with most of what you are pointing out, I do remember seeing a lot of tiny homes being built to skirt the zoning requirements and the endless requirements for a true "home" build. My property isn't too far from town, though the access and availability of inspectors is somewhat limited, so I could get away with many things. City builds really don't have a choice, either put it on a trailer or comply.@@edwardedward8139

    Watching this...brought me back to 8th Grade Industrial Arts class.
    In teams of 3, we built small "homes" like this, complete with electrical (a light that worked), sub-flooring, roofing materials, etc.
    I *really* enjoyed doing it....an amazing sense of accomplishment. For a young guy, it was an absolute blast.
    Watching you guys do this, was on a whole 'nother level....and that sigh of accomplishment/relief near the end of your video, said it all.

    It’s nice to see the attention to detail like getting the cuts right, making sure the waterproof sheet overlaps to OUTSIDE, redoing the stairs up to house, etc. The small points that culminate with a good build. I’ve installed toilets, gypsum board walls, redone bathtub units, but never built a house. Just love watching craftsmen do a job uncompromising because it is so difficult to do things right (especially when a heavy board doesn’t fit right or screw can’t be reached by drill bit). Also kudos to your partner as sometimes it’s not easy being around a person fully committed to a build as it can take over your psyche.

      @scottalpert3444, same! She did help but I can see why this man is "built like a building" given he practically "built this whole building", he must run on "Energizer batteries!"😄For my critique, I'd ♥to have seen the sunset without the truck in the way, those colors @7:27 & @7:30 were spectacular! The stormy weather @26:12 was great too & the rainbow @34:35! This was so nice but I think it could use some LED lighting they could hook up to whilst occupying it. Maybe get creative and have some "flood lighting" when needed but also some low-level "burning lamp" style sconces for a sort of "camp fire light." It could also use some railing for the sides & front of the porch/the steps especially if you want to stand on the porch, lean on a rail and watch a sunset on one side or admire a rainbow on the other! I'm not sure how often they plan to be in it but even some window boxes with "fake flowers" add character and color. I'm not sure of the year-round weather there but they could maybe even put some perennials in the ground in front of the porch.

    • @2withnature
      @2withnature  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @zenithperigee7442 those are a lot of good ideas. We're working so fast all the time even still but once we are near the end and can relax a little we'll take more care to get more scenic shots and get the lighting figured out. I expect we'll be working on projects here at least through spring.

    Have helped friends build small hunting cabins a few times over the years and I tell you that if the cabin is small enough so you can raise a scaffolding and have tarps for the roof and some plastic for the walls it makes a huge difference being able to work shielded from rain and wind. What I miss (or missed seeing) in your cabin is vents and rain gutters. When you get a wood stove you might want to consider one that draws air from the outside instead of pulling it from the room. It makes quite a difference. Also I'm not sure how good it is to have vapor barriers in an unheated cabin, or do you have maintenance heating of some sort when your not there?

    • @2withnature
      @2withnature  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      We're going to have another video of us building out the inside. We have a wood stove in it and we are going to install a small vent right by the stove.

    I love this video, not just for the build, but the little "in-between moments"... sitting under the canopy on the foundation in the rain, eating something and tailgating...
    Great video. It also makes it "look possible" for people without major experience who may want to do this. Thank you.

    Your cabin is absolutely amazing and the two of you working together made it much easier. Your carpentry skills are top notch, you must be in construction for a living ? Noticed lots of rain like here in Florida ( what state are you in ) as the scenery is beautiful with the rain, lightning, rainbows and different lighting in day and night. Maybe solar panels for LED lightning inside and out ??? Would love to see more projects on the cabin, GREAT video and wish it would have lasted much longer ! I'm now a subscriber

    I don't know if it would withstand a tornado, but it may be the sturdiest build I have ever seen... That was a lot of work for such a small size! I hope you do a video of finishing up the inside if you plan to insulate and finish it. I think I might have made it a bit larger, and maybe not quite as tall, but it's yours, not mine... 🙃
    I was never great with a hammer, so have used SS screws for most every project I have done. I built a 12 by 16 deck with a tin and clear plastic roof and there isn't one nail in it.

    • @2withnature
      @2withnature  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That's good to hear. I was worried about it getting crushed under a ton of snow so I beefed it up. It took more money, work and time than I first thought so knowing that now I wish I did make it bigger but oh well. We'll have a video soon of us finishing the inside but we're gonna burn the wood stove a few times before we decide whether or not to insulate it because it might be hot enough without it. That's cool having the deck especially with some clear roofing, we want to do something like that but idk if we will be able to during the winter. We'll see.

    • @vonheise
      @vonheise 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I would insulate, then cut the air down at night to keep from having to get up to add wood. On the other hand, you might have to open a window in the loft. Being retired, I watch a lot of remote off grid videos, often log cabins, and more than one started with one small room that turned into a 5 room home over time, and each addition was a new video. Some do outhouses, some composting toilets. One old guy took 30 years on his and there was no reasonable solar when he started, so now all his wiring is exposed and by room. @@2withnature

    • @2withnature
      @2withnature  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The stove we're going to put in is basic so you can't fine tune the air as much as with a catalytic stove. But we can always swap and upgrade later if we want. We'll see how it plays out, we're gonna do whatever makes the most sense once we get there.

    Loved your video. The one issue that jumps out to me is it looks like you used deck screws for your build. They don't have a very good shear tolerance vs nails or specific construction screws that are meant to bend & not shear.

    • @2withnature

    Brings me back to the days when the wife and I would build things together. Didn't have much of a budget back then, so we used stick frame construction with nails and just varnished shakes instead of cladding. We did a shed this way and it's still holding up well 20 years later. Maybe when we get some more land, we'll build a cabin with more modern techniques. Hope you guys really get to enjoy the place before life gets in the way.
