    Someone else mentioned the KL25Z microcontroller briefly and I’d like to elaborate:
    The KL25Z is like $20-30 and has been used as the brains of an open-source pinball simulator controller setup known as Pinscape: os.mbed.com/users/mjr/code/Pinscape_Controller_V2/wiki/Homepage
    When flashed with Pinscape code, the microcontroller can be used as a USB joystick to handle switch inputs, as well as analog nudging with its built-in accelerometer (no pressing a button to “shake” the machine at a pre-set intensity, just shake it like there’s a real ball inside!) and analog plunger input (the plunger may require some more complicated configuration depending on how the plunger sensor is designed to generate signal, but iirc Pinscape is written to accommodate a variety of sensor setups, so maybe not).
    Inputs are programmed by default to the most common keys used by simulators, making for quick and easy setup; plug in your buttons and you’re off to the races.
    Related is an expansion board compatible with Pinscape for force feedback devices (dummy solenoids for authentic vibrations from bumpers/flippers, shaker motors, real chimes, etc): mjrnet.org/pinscape/expansion-board.html
    It’s an incredible project, and modding this machine seems like an excellent application for it! I’m back to wanting one of these ToyShark units to hack...

      @@RetroRalph Yah. I'm comfortable working with wood and figuring things out. Looks like I can get a set of actual pinball height legs for it too that way. Not sure if it will look goofy or not. But I might go to a 32" playfield and a smaller bezel.

  • @MandoMike
    @MandoMike 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Man, I got some extra PCs and monitors, I’ll just either get a cabinet kit, or build one from scratch, get some pinball cab legs, and forgo buying a toy shark. Seems like yours setup is performing better, and obviously the possibility of expansion with more tables make this very enticing.

    • @RetroRalph
      @RetroRalph  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you have the ability to build it yourself, this would be a really fun project. The amount of tables out there is incredible! Have fun!

  • @thomasware5226
    @thomasware5226 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    that’s cool, though prob would have been cheaper to just cut some mdf & make cabinet form scratch, but I appreciate you didn’t intend to destroy the boards lol. You should look at Pbfx3 cabinet mode too the tables are really nice & you can add static back glasses & dmd too. I haven’t touched VPX for awhile but I think you right click on the dmd to reposition it where you wish

    Love the info. Most likely I would just use your lessons learned and apply it to a diy build with better visuals.
    Cool that you did this on the low end but it seems like a proof of concept to just building a bigger and better one yourself.
    Arcade 1ups are cool cause of their unique feel (star Wars) and the artwork. You don't necessarily feel like you are missing out by using a smaller form factor compared to original and the games are emulating at basically 100% with raspberry pi.
    Pinball arcade you are trying to recreate something real and for that I think you have to have 4k at a minimum and even then you can still argue the physics are off.

    If you can connect a mouse move it over the DMD to the corner or edge and you should be able to resize it. You can also hold done the mouse and re-position the DMD. Otherwise, go into the table folder and look for a BS2server config file.

    Right click on the DMD, and choose show window boarder. You can then resize it to where you want. Right click again and uncheck "show window boarder". Then to have it default in the same position for new tables so you don't have to re-adjust from scratch, take the dmd values from this table and create them in "default" in the registry. So in this case you're playing attack from Mars so after the DMD is where you want it, goto regedit to Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Freeware\Visual PinMame\afm_113b (or whichever rom name version you're using). Copy the values for "dmd_height", "dmd_width", "dmd_pos_x" and "dmd_pos_y" (in decimal to make it easy).. Then create those same name REG_DWORD entries in Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Freeware\Visual PinMame\default . Now all new tables will have the DMD standard for first time launch then you can tweak from that point if other tables need additional adjustments. It'll automatically save to the registry when you move the DMD around.

    Ralph, for the DMD you should be able to right click within the DMD and then (doing this from memory) there is an option to show borders or something like that. Once the borders are there you can size it how you want. Then you can turn the borders off. Give it a shot if that doesn't work I can look on mine and give you exact directions. EDIT: Also there is a Terminator 2 VPX table by G5K which is worlds better than all the others. Search around for it, you won't be disappointed. You can check my channel for some gameplay of it as well. Good job BTW, now you need some solenoids in there for some force feedback :).

The thing with vpin is once you get started you are going to want 4k, nudge, dmd, etc. Don't make my mistake and keep having to upgrade. You will also need an i5 with at least a gtx 1060 to run 4k on a 40" 4k tv playfield. I spend more tine in my pincab than all the other things in my gameroom put together.

    So he spent $400 just to strip everything out. Visual pinball is not as easy as just creating an image with all the games all there as pi3.

    Not worth it to mod, you can do this with less money. For your control i suggest you the kl25z, you will have thé plunger and the nudge with your buttons. For thé menu, take a look to the pinup system. Thks for the vids. Cheers
