    One thing I noticed is that this seems to be running a special version of The Pinball Arcade by Farsight studios, judging by the look of the menus, the table selection, and the instruction presentation.

    Wow they really went all-in on the toy angle, could use a riser and whoever thought up that bezel deserves to be fired. Maybe 1up will make a better 3/4 pinball in the future.

    Great review, Ralph! Thanks for addressing this as a toy, because that's what it is. It's well made with metal and glass and is sturdy. It's obviously not for everyone, especially those that have a virtual pinball or real pinball table. But if you go into it with real expectations, it can be a lot of fun. I'm hoping to pick one up next year.

    This seems fine for what it is, but ultimately if I wanted a virtual pinball machine I think I'd spend more and get something better. There's a couple nice options from Game Room Solutions and Recroomasters so I think getting a good machine isn't as expensive as so many believe.

  • @keithwick6170
    @keithwick6170 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    A potentially simple bezel mod that could be great- paint the bezel black, than add a thinner silver/grey/whatever bezel on top, only at the outside. Could make it much less distracting.

    One thing that jumped out at me was right at 4:35 (you might have to frame advance it to find the right frame) but you can see the ball clip into the flipper.
    This is so infuriating that they didn't bother to fix this issue. And the problem is that it is a relatively simple software fix to at least downplay that effect. Part of it is simple the game (or at least the physics) are running at a relatively low FPS. For something like pinball, you want extreme fidelity on the physics simulation, which will prevent visual clipping like that.
    Even just watching you play, seeing the pinball clip into the tips of the flippers was so distracting.

    • @RetroRalph
      @RetroRalph  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, ToyShock is trash, I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone. Poorly implement software on the hardware. They supposedly “fixed it” but I haven’t seen any evidence of that. Thanks for watching!

  • @ThomasGrillo
    @ThomasGrillo 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I agree, the bezel really needs improvement. Other than that, the rest of the machine looks fairly nice. I've ordered one of these, but I'm a bit concerned that it's too short. We'll see. Yeh, it's a toy. But it's a gateway machine, for getting into v-pins. Thanks.

    Just put mine together and played a few of the tables. I can't believe no one has mentioned the sharp corners digging into your palms while you play. You've mentioned the delay between button and flipper move. I'm getting about 500ms and it's ruining every game for me. Even the graphics seem poorly rendered at times. I can't see myself playing this very often - at least not without gloves for my palms. Sigh.
    Ralph, we can all hear your obvious bias for the full-size, full-powered virtual pins while you're talking about the ToyShock. It was a little off-putting at first, but now that I've played with this toy, I can understand your point of view. I played pins most of my early life (even worked as a pin mechanic back when they were all electo-mech.) but I was somewhere else when virtual pins came about and now that I see what's out there, I'm itching to get/make something worthwhile. I really wanted the ToyShock to scratch that new itch. I guess I need to dig a little deeper.

    • @RetroRalph
      @RetroRalph  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the comment man. This thing just plays more like a poor pinball video game than a true virtual pinball machine. I think I fell victim of the hype thinking that they would somehow pull off what I already knew wouldn’t be possible at the price point. I already say to listen to your gut and in this case I didn’t and well, I got “Toy Sharked”. 🤣. Thanks again for watching man!

    • @robertwallace7808
      @robertwallace7808 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@RetroRalph Just tell me that the "real" virtual pins look and work better and perhaps I'll build one myself. Honestly, from the videos, the graphics on both look great, and with the inherent TH-cam lag (admittedly small) between audio and video, I couldn't really determine the flipper lag in the the TS. It really is a deal-killer. I can make pads for my palms, but I can't fix that flipper lag or the flat graphics. (I wonder what viewing position they rendered for - I can't seem to find the "good" angle for the 3-D effect.)

I'm surprised it has Pinball Wizard on it, is that where the $100 extra came from? lol. The bezel is a shock, why not paint it black? Glossy black would look so much better. Ralph, could it be that the bezel is the size it is because this thing is marketed as a toy? Kids and young teens tend to lean on things when hanging out and maybe they designed the bezel this size to keep the extra pressure off the screen. Even in their own promo for the machine you can see multiple kids leaning on the machine while another kid is playing. Just a thought.

      To be transparent, No mods for me on this thing, it would be a waste of time and money. There are better DIY options and I think come CES, there will probably be other jumping into the market with better products. Thanks for watching!

    No vibrations ? It wouldn't had been hard for them to add that. Also, they need to really work on that border, it needs to look like a pinball machine, not a toy.

      uumm.... it is a toy.... and not meant for anyone over 5.... if an adult is willing to pay $400 for this they already have no clue about this hobby and have more money than brains....

    It looks cool but it’s way too expensive. Also the video is too flat and no pseudo 3D effects. Should have some alternate views or something. Also hope it is 60fps at least because some major pinball game on the switch was only 30fps. I am glad they are creating this kind of stuff. Hopefully it sells so they can improve it.

    As early arcade1up adopter i refuse to get burned on this thing...its nothing more than a prototype of things to come...CES is just around the corner and there will be better options there....the bezel on this bitch is awful....modding this would be a waste of money....everyone just needs to wait for better options to come out....the idea is cool though!!

      I didn’t love it but if you lower your expectations a bit and remember it’s a $400 unit, it’s still fun to play on. 👍🏻 if you’ve never played a VPin before, you might enjoy it even more. I think I’m a bit jaded from playing the other unit I have at home.

      Download The Pinball Arcade on your smartphone/Steam on your computer, that’s what it’s running. It’s not a very accurate pinball sim unfortunately. Pinball FX3 is the best available sim for realism.

      Truth is it will fit perfectly in the space I have available in my arcade room, and that figured heavily into my order! I just want to dip my toe into virtual pinball and see if it is something I like. If I do, I will probably build or mod something better.
