    While liquid Co2 is a myth, IMO, Glutaraldehyde products like Seachem FLOURISH EXCEL and Easy Life Easy Carbo actually work very well against most types of algae.
    I’m not a huge fan of using chemicals inside aquariums. But sometimes it seems there is no other way around. This video will explain how to use Seachem Flourish Excel the right way and how to kill BBA black beard algae easy and safe for fish shrimps and sensitive plants.
    The trick is to use a bucket and treat infested plants only and not the entire aquarium.
    This is also a very good method to clean off potential algae spores from your recent plant swap party.
    Regular dosing is 5ml per every 40 litres (10 US gallon)
    • The first day you dbl dose Excel (10ml/40 Liter)
    • The second day you make a complete water change in the bucket
    • The third day you repeat the dosing (10ml/40Liter)
    • Let the plants soak for another 24 hours and you are good to go
    First treatment weakens the BBA, second dosing really kills it.
    Don’t forget to protect yourself, and be careful with Crypts and Vallisneria.

    I followed your instructions on two of my plants that had a heavy infestation. After a week back in the tank it was completely gone (save for a few leaves I removed) and the plants are thriving. I can easily remove the wood and treat it or would you suggest leaving it for now since it's a fairly new setup? I've read that an algae bloom may be normal in the 5-8 week period. I have used this method and it worked. However, I witnessed a set back in plant growth. I believe the excel is very tough on the sensitive root hairs of the anubias plants. What is working for me now are Siamese algae eaters and I am rotating my anubias through an emerged grow bed to get them "revitalized" before returning them to my aquariums. My emerged growth rate is 5X faster than submerged and the plants adapt well to immersion

    Hello, Jurijs. That bucket you're using doesn't look like it's 40 litre (10g US) (1) so what size is that bucket?. (2) how much did you dose for that bucket size? (3) Does the double dosing have to be precise? What are the effects if slightly over dosing the double dose? (4) I asume it's also black beard algae unless you tell me otherwise. I also have a black fungus like growth appearing on rocks, on the clips of my heater and other places. (5) So what's your solution to my problem? Because in about week my pink flamingo crypt will arrive, and I don't want it to melt cause it's a rare plant as you know..

    Love the tip! Definitely recommended if you're not familiar with excel. Excel does contain glutaraldehyde and it's a biocide so it can do great harm!
    For those interested, though, it *is* totally possible to safely dose to the tank. Flourish excel is great medium for holding homemade fertilizers.
    I dose 5 times the suggested amount on a daily basis in all of my scapes and even in tanks where I've bred fish and inverts! Excel should not to be confused with medical grade glutaraldehyde any more than Liquid Bleach should be confused with industrial grade chlorine!
    The only plant I've ever seen adverse effects on are Vallisnerias. My crypts grow great!

    • @RainyHopes
      @RainyHopes 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Jurijs Jutjajevs the main reason is that I store my homemade fertilizers in Excel instead of water, and properly dosing those means I use 5 times the Excel. Since excel contains a biocide it prevents mold and bacteria from growing in the Fertilizer solution I create. Homemade fertilizer saves me about $100 a year and requires very little effort. Plus I can't get Tropica, Ultum Nature Systems, or ADA fertilizers without ordering online. 😭
      It's a bonus that it acts as an algaecide and helps keep algae at bay. Not why I dose it, though.
      Excel only works as "CO2" when you're doing a non-CO2 tank and are not doing weekly water changes. That low CO2 environment causes plants to produce more "Rubisco", a CO2 fixing enzyme that help pulls carbon from the KH. This is the only time it works as "Liquid CO2". Constant water changes introduce CO2 into the tank and leads the plants to stop creating Rubisco, meaning your Excel is just algaecide!
      TL;DR: I use it in my fertilizer to stop mold, so it gets added every time I fertilize!
      People often latch onto glutaraldehyde and forget that mainstream fertilizers are almost certainly using a biocide of some form to prevent the Fertilizer molding. Biocide is biocide.

      @@RainyHopes Man thanks for the education! I overdosed my tank with seachem flourish Excel thinking that it wasn't working. The next day there was a big red algae bloom. The water was cloudy and red. I can only assume that was all the algae dying off. I did like five water changes. It almost killed my rabbit snails. I had to move them to another tank pronto. anyhow, a couple days later the water was crystal clear and my plants were flourishing like crazy. I should mention that I used this in conjunction with Marcus fish tanks all natural fertilizer.

    Hi juraij, i'm a huge fan of your work but i'd like to suggest a much much much more effective way of dosing gluteraldehyde. If you pretreat your plants with a small amount of hydrogenperoxide (5ml/L of 3% H2O2) it will weaken their cellwall making them much more susceptible to any kind of algeacide (including gluteraldehyde) if you dose the h2o2 and let it sit for 30 minutes and then directly dose the gluteraldehyde it will 100% kill all bba without causing any damage to the plants or requiring multiple doses. I've succesfully treated my tank with this method several times (although the method varies slightly when treating your tank) and it has always evaporated my BBA.
    Edit: to add i've treated my tank directly succesfully multiple times without any die off (even my crystal reds were fine) but i 100% aggree treating your plants in a bucket is THE way to go!

    • @nietrelevant3338
      @nietrelevant3338 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@JurijsJutjajevs i use medical grade 2.6% gluteraldehyde and use roughly 3 ml per 40 liters. This is equal to 5ml of excel (1.5% gluteraldehyde) per 40 liters of water. So just the standard treatment dose, lower doses can work due to the weakened cellwalls but it depends on the previous treatment scheme of your tank and if the algea have build up resistance to gluteraldehyde or not.
      Additionally i would discourage using medical grade gluteraldehyde unless you have experience working with chemicals. Regular excel works just fine.
      As an additional edit; if you can a 50% water change after the initial H202 contact time of 30 minutes can help get rid of excess H202 helps in protecting more soft tissue plants. Although i've personally never had issues, extra safety measures always help :).

    I think you should have worn safety Glasses to stress the point. Please "Wear" eye Protection,if your sensetive to chemicals wear a protection layer over clothes and remove after use.If you had to use poor plants and treat what would your preferred way to treat plants Jurijs. I use currently use bleach,via bucket or Hydrogen Peroxide via syringe's both methods are also hazardsous in use.

    My bottle only says "Flourish" on it

      I don’t remember if it was a safety cap. Squeeze and rotate or press down and rotate usually does the trick with safety caps

      @@JurijsJutjajevs I finally found the trick to opening it. I used a rubber hammer to whack the cap down, and after that it worked like a charm!

    Seachem: Creates a product to introduce a source of bioavailable carbon into an aquarium. Aquascapers: So I saw on a forum it is designed to kill algae

    • @narwhal9852
      @narwhal9852 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      So it acts as a form of co2 right? Because I keep hearing its kills alge but my tanks and shrimp and are heavily planted and lights are on a timer so I never have algae

    • @edwinchua
      @edwinchua 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah so I was searching this topic, and this came up in seachem's official forum:
      "This claim, that Flourish Excel™ is Gluteraldehyde, is a common one that is simply not true. I cannot speak for any other companies that may or may not use Gluteraldehyde, I can only speak for our company and our product. While structurally similar, Flourish Excel™ is NOT a gluteraldehyde product."
      I wonder if it is legalease to avoid litigation, because this product really does seem to get rid of algae. Could be a coincidence because CO2 supplementation gets rid of algae too 🤷‍♂
