  • Black Beard Algae - Knock It Out with the 1-2 Punch!
    In this video, I show you how to easily kill and get rid of black beard algae the easiest way possible. This particular algae is commonly caused by low CO2 and low flow in an aquarium. This method of treating can also be effective on stubborn staghorn algae as well.

    I have developed Black Beard Algae on a Amazon sword in my Hi-fin Sunset Variatus tank. I have been pulling it off and cutting the lights way down and it does seam to be helping somewhat. I just hate doing something so drastic as the 1-2 Punch. Like you I have a lot of tall jungle Val in that tank. But it is always something with that one tank.

    • @TrafishAquatics
      @TrafishAquatics  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep, always something lol. I did everything I could to try to make the BBA go away and nothing was working which is why I resorted to the 1-2 punch.

    THANK YOU!! You have gained 1 new follower.
    Followed your instructions to the letter and 24hrs later all my BBA is red and being eaten by my scav. team and other fish. Val looks healthly so far (I really don't mind if they melt, I'll get to watch them grow again.). After trying numerous other methods yours was the only one that worked on the full tank. I kept my live stock in and no immediate harm done (Electric blue acaras, Corys, albino pleco, ad Otto's.), No noticable change to my base water parameter.
    All in all, best BBA treatment I've found and I will be recommending your channel to my local fish club in Ontario!

    Thank you for this info. I did this to my tank yesterday in hopes of killing off the BBA that went ramped in my tank (my fault due to lack of maintenance and too much lighting due to work). I do have a question for you regarding this treatment. The bottle of Excel states to add treatment ery day to every other day. Is this the case after doing this sort of treatment? Also, can I use my API Leaf Zone additive in conjuction with the Excel after I have done this treatment? Hoping you have some knowledge to these questions. Thank you and keep up the good work.

      Just the one time, no need for a water change the next day, the peroxide breaks down into water and oxygen and the excel is already at safe levels

    If it’s just on my decor, would it be best to remove those from equation and treat. Then put them back in the tank

    I have a 20 gallon tank with platies (including numerous fry, finally), albino cory catfish, and a couple of neo-caridina shrimp ... plus about half the sand is planted with corkscrew val. The black beard algae is dotted over the sand and on the heater. It does not appear to be on the plants. Can I remove the corkscrew val to another plastic quarantine tank that I have and use the sponge filter in there with the plants while I treat the main tank ? The 20 gallon tank also has a hang on the back filter. I have another 20 gallon shrimp only tank that has a tiny bit of bba and lots of guppy grass ... will the hydrogen peroxide likely harm the guppy grass. I have ramshorn snails and mts in both tanks ... are they likely safe ? I'm looking for your opinion, not a guarantee.

    I tried this a couple of days ago and so far (even at the lower dose of 1ml per gallon), all that has died so far is my Hornwort. The BBA is still as rampant as ever.
    I currently have a tank full of floating Hornwort needles. So you may need to add Hornwort to your list!

    Travis, I have watched your video from 3 years ago and now this one. In old video you are talking about spraying leaves or doing the dip. In this video you said "dosing". I just wanted to confirm that what you implied in THIS video was to add 3ml/gal straight into tank that is 100% full of water (ie for a 75 gal tank running fx6 fluval filter) that would be about 234ml of hydrogen peroxide just poured). I just wanted to confirm that before I do something stupid and kill everything (mainly stem plants and some swords) including 10 shrimp in each of the tanks.
    I have done a boo boo. I introduced BBA by ordering Amazon Texas package (all the fancy plants and swords). Then as I was setting up tank after tank, I was transplanting plants and introducing contaminated plants into what is now a total of 4 75 gallon tanks.
    I am wondering if I need to nuke it as described above at 3ml/gal or take route far more cautious and do 1ml/gal (aka 83ml per 75 gal tank with fx6 filters).
    Thank you.

    I'm to the point where this is necessary. Question - before I knew better I used algaefix in my community aquarium a year ago. To this day any snail I have added dies and I'm pretty sure thats the reason why as I do weekly gravel vac / water changes and levels are acceptable on ammonia, etc... Is there anything I can do to make this aquarium safe for snails and shrimp?

  • @rstampa2u

    I have a 65 gal 20 yr old community, heavily planted tank. I always have BBA I've been using Excel Co2 for years. I have a pressurize Co2 system with a spray bar. The Ph is 6.7 - 7.02. I've tried all yours and others suggestion for years. Nothing seems to work except when I remove my plants and spray or brush Excel and or Hydrogen peroxide on them. That works the best but I hate doing that. In a couple of weeks the BBA reappears. I have never seem to eradicate the stuff. I have 350 gph canister filter, a back filter 250 gph and an underground filter 4 heads at 350 gph each. I only use the underground about once or twice a week for a few hours. I have 4 adult Angels and about 10-15 small fish. Mollies etc. I use to do 50% water change weekly. Didn't seem to help at all. I would apricate any advise.

      @@TrafishAquatics As I've said in my first post. I have tried your method witch I've been using for years. I've taken out some leaves that are infected with BBA. Soaked them in straight H2o2 and some in straight 2% glutaraldehyde with is stronger then Excel or API. I just can't seem to kill this s**t. Perhaps by now the algae has mutated into a resistant strain?

    Is this ok with fishes or other creatures while treating the problem?

    • @TrafishAquatics
      @TrafishAquatics  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      As long as you follow the instructions in the video or in the write up in the link in the description most fish will have no issue with it. I treated my tank with the fish in with no problem, however more sensitive fish may not take it so easily.
