Once I stopped running my lights so many hours, my algae went away on its on. I just kept lights on about three hours a day and I have absolutely no algae algae. Even blue lights left on to long can cause algae. I learned this from living in Florida with so much heat and humidity here. Lights lights lights. That's the reason for algae. Plus over feeding causes lots of problems. Just trying to help. I went through so much to learn all of this. I hope i can help you out, as much as you always help us. 🤗
🐠 🐟 🐟
That’s why I ordered the new flex thin background that holds with magnets. It would be just easier to remove background and clean outside. Good video Kev!
Another great video Kev! Thanks! This video gives me confidence in trying this out in the future!
Great video Kev very informative thankyou 😊
Good job bruh, I’ve learned a lot from you. Thanks for all your teaching.
My pleasure! Glad you're finding the channel helpful 😁
Kev- Thanks for the knowledge! You could also purchase a UV sterilizer. There are multiple benefits to such as parasite and algae elimination
Thank you bro for advice and explanation 🤝
Excellent video. I’ve done what you did, pulling out water and adding at the same time, to drastically reduce nitrates and gravel vac essentially doing a 100% water change and lost no fish. My water level stayed at 50% during the simultaneous change. I also dosed water conditioner twice for chloramine. My water doesn’t contain chlorine. Lost no fish. I have also dosed aquarium to kill algae, pouring in and using a syringe and waited 15 minutes before water change. Found no harm to fish. Hydrogen peroxide immediately breaks down. Even used hydrogen peroxide to oxygenate tank during a 3 day power outage. Ived learned from you I don’t have to be exact with measuring amount.
Just got an fx6 today had 2 cristalprofi 1502 I was sick of them leaking just watch your video of setting it up very helpful thank you very much I have learnt a lot from your channel
My pleasure! Glad you're finding the channel helpful 😁
I have that pump. Thanks to you. It works fantastic Kevin I enjoy your videos. I learned a lot. Thank you so much.
My pleasure! Glad you're finding the channel helpful. 😊

Kaveman! You left your wave maker on when you drained the tank lol.
Awesome video thou. I fought that stuff and still occasionally have to fight it. The only fish I know that eats Blackbeard Algae are Siamese Algae eater fish. They clean that pretty well.
Great video, awesome instructions, how longs it been with the cloudy bacteria bloom in the 450 now ? over 2 months ? heading into 3 months ? UV would have fixed it in 4 to 5 days tops.
Thank you for this Kev!! Going to try this tomorrow with weekly water change. Just like with an algae bloom, patience is required. Will be so glad to finally get rid of Black Beard Algae. Ruins appearance of tank for sure! Thanks again...your...the...best! Thank you to Luis as well! ❤😊
Glad we could help Lori! That BBA takes away from the beauty we try to keep! Good luck 😁
@@KaveManAquatics It really does Kev. Thanks again for sharing this! ❤️❤️❤️😊
Ahh need to try this. I do have plants so will do a small test first if possible. Thank youu!!!
My pleasure...yes use caution 💪
You're exactly right its our lifestyle does not matter what we love it i love fish keeping can't get enough of it love you bro happy fish keeping 👍❤
Yes Sirrr 😁💪
El lugar de darle con un pincel también puedes utilizar una jeringuilla para las partes sumergidas. Gracias por el vídeo.
THANK YOU!!! i pulled my affected ornaments out, now ill spray with peroxide and wash then reinstall, you sir are todays hero!
Glad I could help! 😁
I wish i seen this a year ago...i had this algea in tank about a year ago. I bought a product off the shelf that was supposed to hp eliminate it .. i followed the instructions for this product religiously and the next day it was a disaster as i lost all my fish 😢. Im just now trying to restart a new tank. Thank you for posting this.
I appreciate these kinds of videos where you perform a "science experiment"! haha It helps the rest of us learn from your experiences. Think maybe some floating plants and dosing carbon regularly would be helpful and safe for those kinds of fish? I found when I regularly remember to daily does liquid CO2 it helps die back BBA on my plants, but its a fully planted tank.
Cant keep plants with Severums but yes chemical media would help as well.
Thanks 🙏🏾 Kev
Hey super new to this and i thought i could setup a new tank and throw stuff together now i have a small 2.5 gallon tank that looks nasty with a sad betta fish so i got a 10 gallon tank and im trying to do it right following your videos. a friend gave me some of his seachem prime but i dont have stability my question here is can i use api quick start and seachem prime together is that the same? Please help i would love to get my betta into his new home ASAP and thank you for the amazing straight to the point content keep it up🙏✌️
Fascinating process! I knew hydrogen peroxide could be used as a disinfectant, but I did not know this technique. Also, how quickly it reacts into oxygen gas once in the water. Thanks again Kev for another great video.
My pleasure Ruth, Glad you enjoyed it!
Nice video........thanks!!
My pleasure! Glad you're finding the channel helpful 😁
Great video. Labour of love for sure. That said I have herd that Nerite Snails destroy black beard algae and you don’t need a lot of them. Have you ever had any experience with those?
I have black beard algae growing on the shells of my nerite snails 😂
Hello. I'm new to this chanel and your advices are valid, fast and cool!
I would like to know - I'm having the same problem with the same type of algae. I don't mind it as long as it's not hurting my fish or making the water quality worse. Is it dangerous to the water environment?
Please let me know.
Spraying the hydrogen peroxide is extremely effective, compared to direct dosing, some plants definitely don't like the hydrogen peroxide, thanks for sharing. 🙂
It'll come back if you don't change your lighting regime or control the excess nutrients.
It was def due to excess nutrients when the Discus where in there...I was feeding 3-5 times a day...plus this tank is in direct line of sight to the natural light from window...Double wammy
@cockney_red8349
Light alone doesnt do it. Like what @kavemanaquatics said its excess nutrients. Try using only rodi water without trace minerals/fish/food/nutrients and leave your light on 24/7, you wont have that growth. It is light + excess nutrients = (bb) algae.
Though your argument is legitimate, it is not complete and not very informative.
@@KaveManAquatics I’ve been thinking about tinting my aquariums, all window tint blocks UV rays so that may be an option for you to look into, and it doesn’t have to be dark either, almost all film companies make a 70-90% clear film that still cuts out 99.9% of uv rays
Now do you wait a few days to get into the filters to check them out?
Only asking because i just got done dealing with white fuzz all over my tank and man lol. The amount of slimy gunk in both my fx6 filters and in the tubes was unbelievable. I had to drain tank and scrub the decor and glass.
My 500 gallons rocks and stone background have been growing BBA for at least 5 years. I actually love the natural look and the BBAs contribution to the aquascape. I have used both hydrogen peroxide and flourish excel to kill BBA on my anubias plants but it turned out it gradually over time killed the plants
Interesting approach. I could learn to love it but my wife can't stand the sight of it :))
Educate my man! the heck w/algorithms. We need the INFO. Seriously, Kev, I've learned so much from you. I don't keep cichlids. I really enjoy your videos. Keep up the great content! Up next: Which Salt Does What?
Thank you bro…problem is if TH-cam doesn’t serve it, no one sees it lol So the algo is always in control. Hope you enjoy that salt video! 💪
@@KaveManAquatics I was just funnin'. I used to have salt in my water boxes. I redid the whole tank and didn't use salt any more. I appreciate the explanation of the different salts. To those reading the comments, you should have a look at the salt video. Its all crystal clear now.
I stopped shopping at a LFS when the owner told me you can't do 100% water changes or you'll kill your fish. Thank you Kev
Awesome video ,very good thing to know with the algae
Glad it was helpful!
I just scrub mine with a small brush it comes right off i have a 60 gallon tho so I can see how this would be more time consuming lol but at least for the bottom part you could have brushed off
I never hade black beard algae in a tank with no plants at one point I did have a planted 65 gallon that had black beard algae. I killed the black beard with the bleach method
That help a lot I was scared that I would overdose my tank with CO2, so the bleach method was a lot easier for me
The peroxide did help a lot wow did you try a black out with no lights ? But after a week the tank looks good on the other side
Wow that is a big bottle of prime man you must’ve paid a fortune for that lol I pay like $15 for a small bottle good video and full view from me
i have it on my sword plants and plastic decorations , for 2 of my decorations i put them in bleach and that worked for now im just waiting to make sure it doesn't spread. i might use flourish excel now along with the regular flourish i already occasionally use on that tank
Im curious if the fluval uv light would help any of this or be beneficial in any way?!
I have an 8 gallon with five danios who were sitting at the surface and then died in one night after getting them. We let the tank cycle and the water test came back good. Would you recommend a wave maker at the top for surface agitation?
Kev my man. Is this safe with a pleco? Will the pleco be affected if he eats the poisoning algy? Or sucks the algy straight after its sprayed on?
I made a big mistake by adding tap water directly to my Media (I do not have a canister) I was given a Biocube 32 gal so I converted it to freshwater.
Big mistake and I am paying fot it "big" , had to make a temporary tank to hold my tetras until the tank get's cycle again😢.
Now I understand when you say, new owners get disappointed to the point they want out of this hobby.
Update to my error.
One of my Tetras is dead😢. Jezz
Use apt fix ..I am using it and it's superb. It's not harmful for plants or any other microorganisms. Fish and shrimp also .
Does the chlorine affect the BB at all before adding the prime/safe? That’d be my main concern, only reason I add it to my new water before adding it to the tank. I’d be worried it would kill any BB living on decor or in the substrate
Man, your brave I'm afraid to put hydrogen peroxide in my tank. I'm glad it worked for ya dude, thanx for showing me an option, your the best kev
My pleasure! Glad you're finding the channel helpful 😁
Kev would this method work on anubias leaves as well.
How about a video on overstocking your tank.
I have a 5 gallon tank with one Molly and three guppies. For substrate I have gravel and I have a 1 aquatic plant and a few artificial plants. I purchased prime and stability and on the first day I did 10 drops of prime and half of the cap of stability into my tank. Is that correct ?. I have also purchased ammonia alert which helps me read my ammonia levels. I’m still confused whether if every day ( for a week?) I should do a 25% or 50% water change, add prime, and water, nd then add stability. Or if I should just add prime and stability into the tank w/o water changes .Please help.
Is it more effort to remove the background and treat it with peroxide or was it easier to do it this way?
Im just starting to get an outbreak of bba luckily its not on my plants its just on my driftwood, if I take it out brush on the hydrogen peroxide how long before I can put it back in or can I just brush it on while its in the tank without affecting anything?
Will a in line uvc light on the outlet side of fluval filter kill my beneficial bacteria?
can I add the h2o2 every day to my 6 gal?? it doesnt seem to work for now
Do you need to wait like 1 hour or so after using hydrogen peroxiide, before adding a new water to the tank?
For me, hydrogen peroxide was the only thing that works on black beard algae, as you know, it goes purple then dissolves over hours. I have a heavily planted tank and either use a syringe to spot dose or use a modeling paint brush for exposed BBA when i"m water changing or on hard ware. Nothing else had worked for me and nothing I know of eats BBA.
So what causes this black algae? I just noticed mine has a lot of it on my wood and some on my amazon swords. I asked the pet store they just told me to do more water charges and that will kill it and stop it.
I didnt know you could do that with fish still in the tank 🙂 I just have a background sheet on the back outside of my tank as I am afraid to have to clean it! 😂 I am going to add a hiding place to my tank for my fish during water changes, etc. Nice idea.
They'll love a good hiding spot for sure! 😁
Will this work for a community tank without killing the fish ? I know cichlids are a pretty hardy fish.
Ok buttttt my bba is growing on the plants. How can i do this if they are fully submerged? I dont want to uproot them, it'll shock um and mess up their growth..
The recommended amount is 1.5ml per gallon. Don't forget to account for lost gallons due to decor and substrate
After how long my beneficial bacteria will die if i tuned off the air pump "sponge filter"?
hi. i just got a new tank and haven t put any fish in it. it has like 10 days of cycle it has substrate, filter, 2 plants an light. i used some bacteria boost and water dechlorine. after 3 days the water got cloudy now it s seems to be clear but some white fungs seems to apear on the substrate and plants. have n seen any info about this thing. should i be worried? keep up the good works. from romania l. thanks
I'm on day 2 of trying Seachem Flourish Excel to try and get rid of my Black Beard Algae in my planted tank.
Black Beard Algae is always kicking my butt!!
If i have plants it's safe for them?
My guy Kev droppin knowledge bombs! Love It!
You know it my bro! 😁💪
I really need help.. I don't know what to do.. I have a smaller tank right now.. Its 77lt (I think that's roughly 20 US gallon I'm in the UK) my fish are dying and I don't know why... My tank is cycled.. I tested the water and the levels are good.. Temperatures good.. Oxygen levels good.. Not overfeeding. Not overstocked.. I do have a small amount of diatoms not much.. But I keep losing fish.. They are mainly tetras lemon, orange flame and a couple of Cory's.. I am completely lost as what is wrong so any advice would be great. I get really upset losing fish and I don't know what else to do.
Hi pal! Greetings from Prague, Czech Rep 🇨🇿. Another great video! I just didn't get why you used both the Safe and the Prime? Isn't it the same thing? 🤔
Sorry that Im just now seeing your comment! First Thank you for the Super Thanks! It's highly appreciated! 😁💪 Second, Yes you're right. They do have some differences but it's basically the same thing. So much so that during the process, with filming being involved, I forgot which one I used first, lol So I just grabbed one. But either one will produce the same result I needed 😁
@@KaveManAquatics No worries :)
Thanks for the clarification 👍🏻
I'm happy that I found a local Seachem importer, which allows me to start testing it out.
Excellent bro! I've vouched for them since the beginning of my hobby and this channel, you'll love'm!! 😁💪
I tried hydrogen peroxide too. It works, but what worked even better was completely blacking out the tank for a few days. Like drape a movers blanket over it. The only time the tanks sees light is feeding time.
What you need is a product called LCA triple B black beard blast
Liverpool creek aquatics look it up
It’s by far the best treatment iv ever used
Hi from australia 🇦🇺
Hey dude you think this would be safe to do in place for my tank? Ive got several plecos so just worried about them directly sucking where the peroxide has been? Also what percentage was your peroxide? There seems to be different percentages available
3%
Your plecos will be fine, the hydrogen peroxide breaks down into gas very quickly. Its a 3% solution
Hey Kev, great idea. I simply use pleco fish to eat the algae.
Plecos won’t eat black algae. I have 2 plecos in this tank lol
Haha well you learn something every day.
I bet irish Guinness drinking plecos would eat black Algae same color lol.
I do 1ml/gal for blue green and 3ml/gal for hair and blackbeard.
Interesting Video friend... But what actually caused the Black Beard Algae??? So i can avoid your problem?
Probably feeding the fish too much annnd keeping the lights on for way to long.
Kev,
You can also get a couple Siamese Algae Eaters. They love black beard algae.
They tend to also love the eyes of all my other fish 🤣 I learned that the hard way
@@KaveManAquatics They probably were not true SAE? That’s a new one to me.
Will this also work with green algae on my goldfish tank ?
Thanks KaveMan !!
Dear Sir, Just a comment in general....I have been a life long aquarist having large fresh/tropical and marine systems for 50 years..I decuided to ry cichlids due to the astronomical prices and I sometiome wonder if they are real or am I being gouged...Anyway, I will be taking delivery of a 75 gal acryllic aquarium anyday and will continue my new journey with African cichlids...I would like to humbly share with you that your presentaitons are delivered in such a great, well thought-out manner...Your gentle, good humor and extremely learned discourses have been very helpful to me in terms of 'seeding' my aquarium and using certain products...I hope you continue your great work and from a relatively new viewer, thank you very much! Be well and please continue to share your vast knowledge with the 'newbies', as well as the more experienced fish-folks. Thank you! And, oh yes, I hit the 'SUBSCRIBE' button, a while ago!
Nice
Did all the paint come off your 3D background? I have that problem with the decorations from the pet store
They melted away cause I suck lol I'm starting to regrow now though 😁
My wife's tank was so bad we just removed all the gravel. She has a fluval flex 32g we pulled the baffling and filtration out of the tank and installed a fluval canister.
I’m hoping you answer this. If I am fighting bba with peroxide and or other Algae products do I need to remove the carbon filter. I’m thinking the carbon filter is cleaning everything I’m putting in I’m not getting and results from anything
Thats a great question that I'm not educated enough to answer. Carbon is designed to absorb many dissolved substances but I'm not sure if it would also absorb the hydrogen peroxide. If you were simply spraying the tank/decor while emerged like I did, the hydrogen peroxide will be working before the carbon could get to it. In theory. Sorry I couldnt be more helpful.
@@KaveManAquatics it is killing my plants which I have been cutting them to help clean it keeps coming back and it’s all over my gravel. I just put new carbon and polish in. Then it just got me thinking should I remove everything but the sponge. I have been fighting it for 3 months. I have had everything for about a year so no idea what happened
When you get the water that low, its sometimes easier to temporary take the fish out then go to town!
Yea, just didnt want to stress them even more by netting them...Theyve had enough lol
@@KaveManAquatics true! Good video nonetheless!!!
My fish tank keeps getting cloudy, and now I have black beard algae growth. What can else can I do? I have been dealing with this for over 3 months, keeping up with partial water changes, testing water parameters, last thing I tried was Seachem Stability daily to add good bacteria back into the tank. Nothing helps.
You need more beneficial bacteria in it.
Great job... just wondering though... How long does the hydrogen peroxide method last before the black beard algae returns? (... hopefully never!)
it wont return if you corrected the situation that caused it to grow in the first place. Like reduction of light and/or nutrients...
Why did you use Safe at the beginning and then switch to Prime at the final fill?
Great question...During filming, I forgot which one I already used, lol You could do the whole process with either or, just dose accordingly. 😊
How much time do you leave the light on?
8 hours or less...if you've already got algae issues go 6 hours or less
Is it just me or can I see your wave maker still spinning lol
I think I turned it off...LOL
I thought i saw that too 😅
@@KaveManAquatics
How's your discus liking the flow/current in your tank? Most people say discus are not comfortable with strong flow and I know you always put wavemaker in your tank. Are they bothered with the strong flow?
Most people do say that, even myself. Then I found some conflicting information so I tried some flow in the tank and the Discuss are doing great with it 😁
@@KaveManAquatics Thanks man. I'm planning to put a discus in my 4ftx2ftx2ft tank together with my 1 asian arowana and 2 stingrays. i hope they'll be fine with the flow inside.
You will run into problems with a tank that size. Sting rays and Arowana require much bigger tanks and they'll take their frustrations out on the Discus.
@@KaveManAquatics Thanks for the advice. I actually bought another 4ft tank for the discus.
So this is from only spraying once on the 1st day?
That’s correct 😁😁
I got 1 of those 2 finger temp checks 😂💀🤣
Those are exclusive bro! 🤣
Bro that temp check sensor is worldwide! Everyone I know has one 😅
🤣🤣
@@KaveManAquatics everytime before I go to work at 6am. I poke my 2 finger banger to check for Temps hahaha
🤣🤣
Are you going to put anything else in the 150g in terms of fish??
Absolutely...but I have a few options I need to decide on 😊
@@KaveManAquatics not that I have any say in this, but I've gotten more into the mid size/bigger fish myself. But I always thought it would be awesome to have a large tank, with an awesome planted scape, with like 100 neon tetras, and 100 of some other schooling fish to have multiple schools, and a cool centerpiece like angels or something. You could also go the puffer route? Puffers are really cool. So are flowerhorns! Just throwing some ideas out there.
Hi Kaveman, love your videos. Can you tell me more about the water pump you used in this video? Thanks
Its amazing! You can find it in my shop - koji.to/kaveman_aquatics
How did you get Black Beard Algae ?
3ml per gallon is the maximum I've ever dosed with.
You may use black molly , black molly is the best algae eater , any type of algae
Kev, I dig your vids and everyone does it their way …but… I would have just moved all the fish from the beginning and just did it all in one shot..that’s just me but I get you though…stay true…
I would have to, but I did it like this for content purposes. To show the comparison. I think I stated that in the video. Remember, I have to think like a content creator while you're only thinking like a viewer 😊
Did u kept chemical media in the filter during these days after using iit or u removed removed it??... And all of your vedios are very informative and straight to the point
I deal with my black beard algae the same way. When I do deep clean on decor this is the method I use…..Great video……
Nice! 😁💪
Safe does not do the same thing as prime, better look that up again and let everyone know that safe does not add the slime coat and if I remember correctly, there was one other thing but can't remember exactly what it was. If it was same thing it would be liquid form. It's powder because it can't have the ingredient to make it liquid like prime. Yes, safe does not remove the harmful heavy metals in your water like prime, that was the other thing it can't do.
Watch some older videos, I’ve mentioned all that countless times. But when trying to keep it simple I just say “it’s basically the same” …cause it is …basically…the same 🙄
Hey question, when refilling how do you get the correct Ph ?or is that something that’s not as important in larger tanks.
YEEEO
SECOND!
First here
i know i did a hydrogen peroxide dip on my plants when i had brown algae 1 tablespoons for a gallon worked. let them sit in it for 5 minutes
