I'm glad that the Signalis patch happened before you released this video because it truly was the only issue with the game.
It was unbelievably lucky that they dropped it as I was literally preparing to render on the 25th
nothing like collecting rifle bullets only to realize, you've missed the rifle 30 minutes ago 😂
Honestly, as a Survival-Horror newbie (I'd only beaten REmake beforehand), I was fine with the inventory. 8 sounds like too much even, I can't imagine much risk-reward being left in there at that point.
I literally was not going to play this game just because of this single issue. The way it was described was enough to kill the game for me.
The inventory being 6 was fine until holding onto the flashlight became borderline mandatory, and the limit also made the camera module unusable. Making those two items specifically not take up space was a great choice imo.
If you ever want to do one of these again, i can not reccomend the game "Darkwood" highly enough. Its a top down survival horror game with the main charcter trapped in a forrest with monsters and fairy tale inspired npcs, i dont want to give any more than that because the mystery of the game is part of the horror.
Purchased, thanks
I recently just played through it myself. An absolute modern classic tbh.
@Nerrel yo let's go. Hope you I enjoy it, I love the game.
I have that game in my ps library. Might give it a go now.
DARKWOOD FUCKING ROCKS

This was a great video, but I'm thoroughly saddened by the exclusion of Ten Nights at Tingle's 😔
I googled this hoping it was a real fan game. This is a betrayal of the highest order 😡

@@ValkyrieTiara is it the same developer as 5 nights at freddys? Those game are aimed for kids, and not have uniqe aspect to it. It's then understandable why it isn't included
@@HueghMungus they were at the time not made for kids and were extremely unique, but do you really expect "Ten Nights at Tingle's" to be an official real and actually existing game?
to be clear, the comment you posted under (not replied) was a joke.
I really appreciate you taking time to add captions to your videos. 😊
I have to admit I was a little stunned that Song of horror had a permadeath mode built in with how many game ending bugs it has, old ones too. Feels like a mode that should be added at the very end of development like a victory lap for the rock solid game you made and not a test for players to muddle through.
It's been a year and Signalis is still a fantastic little game.
Was my game of the year for 2022 😁
@@aaronatkinson177 same here, haven't finished Elden Ring And God of Dad wasn't for me.
Don't think I'll ever play it, tbh. I usually love games like Signalis, but there's something about it specifically that is so unappealing to me.
@@bbbbbbb51What is it exactly that puts you off, if you had to guess?
Will never stop singing the praises of Signalis, what a game. Would love to hear your thoughts on World of Horror :)
Happy to see Signalis here. It's such a gem of a game. At launch I didn't have the same problems with the inventory as most. The camera and flashlight taking up a slot was my only problem, but the six slots created a lot of tension and interesting choices for me. What do I pick up now, ammo or health? Do I bring extra ammo to load into my gun after clearing a room? Which bodies do I burn to make the back track easier? All the core systems where really vibing together for me.
That being said I love the new update. Revised is my goto, and I'm excited to give extended a shot in the future.
Thank you, Nerrel, for having transcripts for all of your videos! The amount of polish and care you put into everything you make is why you're my favorite content creator. If only we could clone you to get videos even more often...or we could just make him play Hollow Knight every waking hour for kicks. Either way is fine.
I immediately want to play Signalis. It looks cool as hell
Really fun, I ended up playing it twice in a row because the gameplay is so well done, and also knowing ahead of time what's going to happen makes item usage more interesting, especially on the hardest difficulty.
For instance, I also thought the same as Nerrel about the flares, until the second playthrough I realize they give you plenty as long as you use them on high traffic rooms or on tougher enemies with some for regular enemies (I also think certain ones never revive).
I also thought that 6 inventory slots was too little but felt that 7 would have been perfect. So, I think the "revised" setting would work best (I played before the update came out, so I haven't tested it) because it makes the light not take up space which was the worst part for me. I think 8 would be too generous, except for the final boss, since on hard difficulty you legitimately don't have enough space for all the weapons and ammo you "need" (I mean, it is possible I think, but just much slower).
I actually have very little experience with classic RE style games (I cannot do tank controls no matter how hard I try) and I managed to survive my first playthrough of the game without dying, which is tied to an achievement funnily enough, but I got that achievement on the hard difficulty which I think is much more fun in some ways but likely was only as easy as it was because I knew what was coming.
Its fantastic
Idk if you have, but prepare to cry
I finished signalis a week before the update and man what a game, blew me away with the gameplay, combat, visuals and the cryptic story.
It’s awesome that they added the inventory system update for people that can’t stand the rule of 6. Personally I didn’t mind it because it was a great way the game told you to plan things ahead for trips around the areas, but I’m definitely gonna mess around with the new update for more casual runs.
yeah more options are swell even if you dont need them yourself
They also added a ara in a vent
Yeah, I really felt that 7 slots would be the perfect amount but having 6 and then the flashlight not counting is the perfect middle ground! Because once you play the game to the end, every future playthrough would be too easy with more inventory as you never need too much outside of maybe 2 areas if you are strategic.
I'm really glad you covered Evil Tonight. I love that game but never really hear anyone talk about it.
Agreed! I enjoyed the game. Very charming. For anyone else thinking of playing it on Switch, I’d recommend abuse the video recording feature to record a video when you find a lock so you know where to find it… it’s like making your own map
Alisa is by far one of the most captivating games I’ve ever seen in a long while. I adore the very specific and obscure wax 90s horror game look and I’m extremely happy this developer took that art direction, as not only does it look beautiful, but incredibly eerie and creepy in a way that pretty much all modern horror games lack. Signalis is cool but there’s something special about Alisa, it’s such a shame that there’s so many issues dragging it down, and I hope and pray that he can fix most of the issues or even consider hiring a few people to help tweak them, as I want to play it asap but and turned off by the issues. Regardless it’s one of the most captivating videogames I’ve ever seen.
What drag Alisa down was most definitely the shop system. Weapons should have been acquired by story progression. Would have been an easy recommend if it wasn't so tedious to replay.
Tbh, Alisa is MUCH better than Nerrel made it out to be. The game Indeed has some problems, but as long as you use modern controls (I truly believe tank controls make Alisa worse), get used to the jank that fixed camera pretty much demands and use some strategy to deal with enemies instead of always running from them, you're gonna love it, specially because it's goes somewhat beyond the classics.
@@Edo_Luna_ did they fix some of the issues? I want to buy it when I get home, anything I need to know before I get it?
@@CountOfMonteCristo_ Would you want me to write a mini review or just tell you some tips?
@@Edo_Luna_ whichever! :) I’m gonna buy it for sure lol but I wanna hear your thoughts
I played through Alisa on steam, back when it launched and there were zero issues using a controller without a user made profile. The baked in layout had none of the issues you're describing, outside of the auto aim sometimes not locking on to stuff that's right in front of you. I wonder if it's got something to do with you playing on a steam deck or some new update.
Exactly! Thats what I was thinking! I never ran into any of these issues and this game definitely deserves more than a 5.5 in my book!
Yeah, this is my first time hearing of this guy and now my first impression is that he just sounds like a jackass. Not one nice thing to say about the game? Seriously? The game is great.
I just played through Alisa, it's interesting seeing such a different take on it! I really enjoyed it apart from the stealth - I think you're meant to take your time and kill enemies in this one, as that's what got me through it.
Indie game reviews are some of your best content imo. Shame that most of the views are for the bigger releases though…
Signalis is easily one of the best games I have finished this yeard. What a game dude.
Signalis was easily one of the best games I've played this year. The atmosphere and story simply stick with you long after you're done. If you're at least semi interested in the game after Nerrel's review, definitely check it out!
inventory management in signalis with 6 slots felt perfectly fine to me imo but it is nice that there's the option now for the flashlight and camera module to not take up inventory space
They also added a little extra lore and a ara❤
signalis is one of these rare games that sticks with you even after you finish it, i'm so glad they addressed the inventory limit, because that really was the biggest detractor of the game
Signalis is my favorite indie horror game by a landslide, I can't wait to replay it for halloween tomorrow!
If I may suggest another indie horror game, please try Fremdganger the cheating demon, it's a meta horror game with a GENIUS twist and in my opinion the best 4th wall break in any medium, and it's severely underrated. It's a bit like Inscryption, which I also love and recommend but you more than likely have played that one already.
That's a funny name for a horror game.
Signalis was one of the best things I played last year, and this new patch makes me want to give it another go to get the Artifact ending. Incredible game.
Nothing in this video is as important as Nerrel's response to the information that there are new "Snootle" enemies in Super Mario Wonder

I finished Signalis on the 24th and was excited to see this video pop up. But finding out that they released an inventory patch on the 25th is driving me insane.
6 inventory slots and especially the flashlight taking one slot up was one of my biggest issues with the game and finding out they fixed that a day after I beat the game is really fucking with my head.
Good reviews as always. I might check out evil tonight since it looks fun.
Psychological horror
Always love your reviews, you don't hold back and really cover the core mechanics very thoroughly.
I love you Nerrel and I agree with mostly what you say; so it's strange to hear that you had such a difficult time with Alisa. I honestly think whatever set up you were trying to use was bugging the same since when I played it (as a hardcore lover of fixed camera games, even Galarians) I loved every second of it. Hopefully whatever issues you had can be ironed out
25:52 to 25:22
Playing Signalis on the hardest difficulty on the 1st playthrough really increases the tension and makes it absolutely necessary to burn the bodies in areas you think you'll be going through often.
Especially when enemies take more bullets to bring down and ammo is harder to come by on the hardest difficulty.
For newcomers who will try out Signalis for the first time, rest assured that the difficulty can be changed in the options at ANY time. I recommend starting off on hard mode to test the waters!
i find it fascinating how the difficulty change makes the game feel different. on easy youre really hardy. medium is like a good medium imo. didnt try hard yet but will
@@a_lethe_ion After my 1st playthrough on Hard, I played on lower difficulties to get all endings. Much easier to blast through the game when you already know the layout and enemies are weaker.
I was disgusted by how much ammo the game gives you on Normal 😆.
Nerrel fucked up by not constantly yelling "Evil dies tonight!" when he talked about Evil Tonight.
I've never heard of Evil Tonight but I am already in love and can't wait to play it!!
Woah we had such a different time with Alisa :o Was this a recent playthrough? I've had several friends play it after gifting it to them and you're the first person I've seen get these controller issues :/ That's such a shame
your channel is a real treat thank you for uploading.
Crazy you released this video on the same day I played Signalis for the first time. I'm really enjoying it so far, so it's nice to see you liked it too.
Also I never see anyone talk about Evil Tonight, which was a lesser-known 'horror' game I mostly enjoyed except for, of course, the bullet sponge enemies. So, cool to see it covered.
I have been waiting for a new video forever. I have watched all of your videos 3 times over now. What a treat this is!!!!
Im really happy you ended up playing Signalis I was really interested on hearing your thoughts on it
Another great vid from Nerrel. I can't help but think you would be an excellent resource for QA
I've had Evil Tonight and Signalis on my wishlist forever so this video was very helpful to prepare when I finally pick them up.
Love this genre of games! THX 4 the recommendations! Happy Hallowing!
Please keep this series going, love to see more indie horror
Idk how I missed this video in my subscriptions but I'm here now
You can burn multiple bodies with a single item in Signalis, they just have to be very close. I hope to see a World of Horror review in the future! It's such an unique take on horror.
Your videos are so quality and great humor too, keep it up man
You are one of my favorite reviewers, Nerrel. You're like one of three TH-cam channels that I actually have notifications on for.
I loved playing Alisa, the only issue I had with it was the voice actress for Alisa. Feels like the dev just asked his gf to do it or something. I don't really remember much of the issues you listed to be honest. The sword is easily the best weapon in the game btw, the blunderbuss kinda sucks in comparison
edit: just replayed the alisa part and apparently it IS his gf, makes sense lol
His GF voiced Alisa AND made the music of the game as well :D
It's a shame about Alisa since I think that game is great but I understand the issues. I had similar problems where it wasn't registering the controller I plugged in, it was fixed later and it controlled great afterward but I forgot how I got it to that point. I got used to aiming partway through the experience but I died many times before I did so. I found out that using the sword is key to getting through the game as it can be used to stunlock a large number of enemies as well as run circles around some of the bigger ones, but again this did require some testing and dying. On the off chance you see this, did you spend any money on the modifications in your playthrough?
That save room theme will forever be lovely.
The first thing I thought of when Alisa came up was the classic Alone in the Dark. Shame about the issues dragging it down.
I had no controller issues or difficulty at all fighting in Alisa, I would read steam reviews and 100% recommend playing if you like those types of games.
didnt drag it down deep enoigh cuz the game is still GOATed and fkin awesome

Thank you for mentioning the over the shoulder and first person mods for signalis, definitely using those for the replay
Great video. Thanks for sharing. I like the ambiance at the end.
I'd recommend "Detention" and "Devotion", former esp is an amazing horror narrative adventure game.
The ending evoked the feeling of Silent Hill without copying any element of it.
You should play fear and hunger. As far as indie steam horror games go, it’s easily the most interesting one I’ve played. It’s pretty intense by horror game standards despite being an rpg maker game. Take the content warning seriously, but if you can get past that it really is a special game.
I’m inevitably going to buy Alisa specifically for those waxy rendered backgrounds. I’ve got nostalgia for days for the original Spenser mansion. Just have to steel myself for the jank.
Another confirmation that Signalis is great makes me glad I’ve kept it in my shopping list too.
It's not THAT janky, the game is absolutely full of soul!
100% buy it, read the steam reviews they paint a much much more accurate picture.

@@MrCrazywrench Filtered bad. Alisa is super good.
I think you summed it up perfectly, in that these games being developed by one guy or a very small group is IMPRESSIVE. It's incredible to see how so much effort and heart went into making most of these titles. They all look SO cool and enticing, but seem to lack some sort of polish which I think could be fixed by playtesting - something probably easily acquirable, but not with enough breadth to fully work out the kinks. These are the kind of games that make me think of what might come next out of these devs, and to see if they learn some things from these titles. It's artwork in the making.
Also yayyyyyy wooooo Nerrel woooooo!
I deeply appreciate these videos you do. Highlighting smaller games like these is healthy for discourse and the community. Always a treat when you post.
Regarding burning bodies in Signalis, you totally can burn multiple bodies at once, but the hitbox seems real finnicky. I could totally be wrong though, but I remember doing it at least twice
THANK YOU NERREL I needed Halloween shit this year
Massive Jumpscare Warning at 28:32
"But now I want to give the developers a hug," took me off guard in the best possible way.
When you mentioned the anime-type cut scenes in Signalis, I was reminded of what you said in your Collection of Mana video: About how it's always as if devs are sneaking in anime characters for no reason. I've seen so many smaller games with either cool ideas or interesting settings, only for those cool/unique aspects to to be muddied by the inclusion of cutesy, quirky anime style characters which stick out from an otherwise cohesive style.
Glad you played Peaknalis
I loved Alisa it’s one of my favorites. Honestly I have no idea why you scored it so low.
I love these review compilations, I need moreeeeeee
A shame that you bounced off Alisa. I don't want to backseat or anything since I think most of your complaints were valid, but I do think that you underrated the sword. Its block parries almost every melee attack in the game, leaving you unhurt and able to counter with a swing of your own. It was such a powerful option that I almost never had it unequipped.
He just got filtered. Shame. I was hyped to see him cover the game but uh...
EXCUSE ME, THE SWORD HAS A BLOCK???????????????? I recently played the game and dropped it 2/3rds into it due to having the exact same issues described in this video (even tho I actually used the sword quite a lot) and utterly hated my time with it. But this knowledge is a game changer What the FUCK. WHY DOES THE GAME NOT TELL YOU THIS, HOW DO I USE THE BLOCK
@@allanzzthanatoszz should be one of the face buttons while you're stranced up to swing.
Nerrel gives that amazing cold weather vibes, when ever he talks about any kind of games 😊great content as always
I found the 6 item limit in Signalis interesting if a slightly awkward on the first playthrough but workable, and actually very fun on repeat play throughs. You end up having to duck and weave past enemies a lot more, giving a nice risk & reward to them that they otherwise don't really have when you're just killing/rekilling them. The combat's alright but the movement feels better to me. Also, you can see how minimally you can equip yourself and how many puzzle items you can get in one go around before returning to the safe rooms. (You don't actually need the flashlight that often.) It lends itself to (semi-)speedrunning well after you've gone through it once. It's like a classic RE or Silent Hill game like that.
It's nice that people now have the option to change it, and the flashlight not taking up a slot makes sense, but I did come to find most complaints about the inventory system a bit overblown.
Played 3 hours of signalis and really liked it, but then lost the motivation to keep going in light of some other games like Golden Light and Ultrakill. The inventory size was def a part of that drop. Feel super lucky that I get to play it now after the patch. Thanks for letting me know Nerrel!
I was sad to see the Alisa review but not particularly surprised. I followed the game through its development and the developer had a strong vision for better or worse. The controls especially were a point of contention. "Auto aim" eventually got added but it has so many concessions (only aims at an enemy's last position, vertical aiming is still manual) that it is borderline useless for most of the fast moving or crawling enemies in the game.
It's a huge shame because the game is absolutely packed with wonderfully unique enemies and locations, and a wealth of fun unlockables that make it a blast to replay. If you can move past the issues mentioned in the review it's one of the best indie survival horror titles out there.
For anyone interested in playing still, there are a couple of ways of negating a lot of the issues:
1) Use modern controls. The sudden and unexpected camera changes will confuse movement, but enemies are vastly more manageable this way. Attacks can be avoided much more easily and aiming is less cumbersome. I love tank controls but Alisa was designed poorly for them.
2) Use the sword. Nerrel thought it slow and useless but in this case he probably hampered himself. Attacks have a wide angle of effect so your aim doesnt have to be precise like with guns, and it can stunlock most enemies for a few seconds. You can kill almost anything by slashing a couple times, circling the enemy, slashing again, rinse and repeat. Not to mention it saves ammo and you can block with it. Honestly it's absolutely vital for levelling the playing field with those bastard crawling enemies.
He's a very smart and perceptive guy with perhaps the keenest attention to detail ive ever seen. But i haved noticed his grips about difficulty in reviews can sometimes at least partially be just kind of skill issue lol. we cant all be perfect though and he usually does a good job of explaining why he wasnt having fun
@@shanegale6143 Yes! I play an awful lot of survival horror games, so mechanics that may seem more obvious to me might not be for someone less familiar with the genre's tropes. Although in this instance I *personally* see Nerrel skipping over the sword less of a skill issue and more of a failure of game design. For instance, you have to buy the sword. It's immediately available but with how few cogs you get at the start of the game, doubled with the fact they're also used for saving, it's a huge investment that many players probably skip. Due to this there are no segments "tutorialising" its mechanics. Couple this with the fact that both the enemies and the guns you kill them with are generally much faster, it's easy to jump to the conclusion that the sword maybe isn't useful.
Hell it even takes up one of your two vital weapon slots. It's not insane to think "I want to take a small gun for the grunts and a big gun for the difficult enemies"
I recently dropped Alisa about 2/3rds into it due to having the exact same issues described in the video. Although I used the sword quite a lot, this (and another comment here) is the first time I hear it has a block!!!!! Absolutely absurd that the game never tells you this, what the hell... this is legit a gamechanger and I wish I knew it sooner😭
@@allanzzthanatoszz ahhhh glad i could help! i think it's the reload button to block when you have the sword out. you can even parry and riposte for extra damage if you're good at timing!
i hope you can finish it, i probably had my most fun on subsequent playthroughs unlocking everything. :)
Evil Tonight looks pretty cool, but the best top-down RE clone I've found yet was Heaven's Dust 2. The first one is pretty cool, but the sequel improved every aspect and genuinely feels like something Capcom might have made as a RE series for DS, absolute top quality and blew my mind that an indie game nailed it so well.

HE REVIEWED SIGNALIS, YES, I HOPE HE LIKED IT
Edit: HE LIKED IT
You wouldn't know it from the video, but Signalis is the coolest game I've ever played
@@NerrelIt was my absolute GOTY last year. The music, the art, the storytelling, the puzzles, it’s all impeccable.
I saw my comment on the steam forum!
Really love song of horror and i feel like you may have approached it with the wrong mindset. You shouldn’t get frustrated by character death, it may feel cheap but you have 3 other characters and people dying actually changes the plot and the cutscenes you get, making your story unique.
It may be odd design in this day and age, but you really miss out on a lot by caving to frustration and playing on easy, you can’t even experience the mechanic of the deceased characters helping you and giving you items, or getting different playable characters in chapter 4/5.
Stay on normal/hard and see how your unique story will unfold!
Thanks for reviewing those obscure games
I've been giving the first Resident Evil (remake) a chance because of your arguments for fixed-camera horror and I'm really enjoying it, my only reservation with fixed camera is that I've never really gained a sense for when the camera will change (and only really with that one room in Remake where you have to slide blocks to prevent the walls from closing in, the camera seems to change ten times when you tilt the stick).
I'm glad indie developers have been putting the work in to keep this style alive, though, and I hope that it can eventually be pushed forward to be as good as it can be. Always appreciate your videos, and thanks for the recommendations here!
Nerrel the kind of guy to complain about bat credit cards
A shame that most of the entries didn't work for you, but I appreciate that you give obscure games like these a chance!
You whippersnappers! I beat Signalis on release with the six slots and LIKED it! (buuuuuut you're probably right that the update would have meant a lot less tedious backtracking, haha. That's cool for the devs to do!)
Signalis is such a fantastic piece of atmospheric storytelling. I did find a lot of the puzzles and progression to be a little boring, though. Most of it is scouring rooms until you find the thing that opens another room so you can find the thing that opens another room and so on and so forth. There are very few puzzles that truly stick out as unique and interesting to me, and even fewer that require you to use multiple locations as anything other than an item hunt. Playing it with the limited inventory made that aspect so much less enjoyable, too. Glad they fixed it, because it's otherwise a wonderful survival horror experience.
I actually need more RPG horror games, I can't remember the last time I saw one
