Crazy Little Thing Called Love isn’t a cover. Freddie wrote it in the bath in 10 minutes. It’s an ode to Elvis.
It's very obviously a tribut to Elvis and he did a great job you can immediatelly tell it's supposed to be Elvis. Writing this in 10 minutes yeah I call bs on this.

What amazes me is that Queen was a last minute addition to the show. That crowd wasn't expecting to see Queen, they were NOT a Queen crowd. Freddie still owned them from the first note.

Queen was a late addition, but people did know that they were performing not everybody knew because some people just went to see who they wanted to see. But you were absolutely right. It was not a “Queen crowd“. they absolutely stole it! It was AMAZING to see!
Live Aid was 16 hours of nonstop music and you just watched the best 21 minutes of it 👑 Queen stole the show!

These were the very words Elton John uttered when he rushed into Mercury’s trailer after the set. “You bastards, you stole the show,” joked the charismatic star.
“Queen smoked ’em. They just took everybody. They walked away being the greatest band you’d ever seen in your life, and it was unbelievable,” said Dave Grohl of Foo Fighters. “And that’s what made the band so great; that’s why they should be recognized as one of the greatest rock bands of all time, because they could connect with an audience.”
Queen was the best band EVER. Their versatility is unmatched, and Freddie was a magical being.

All the bands were great. We were so spoiled with choices. Then the best live band came on : Queen and the energy zoomed. Freddie knew how to pull energy and push it through each of us. It was an extraordinary performance despite his infected throat. A Saudi Prince donated a million dollars during the Queen’s performance. I, an American teen, was jumping around in front of the tv and singing and dancing with Freddie. Those 4 always were prepared and rehearsed and transformed you into a joyful person who felt connected to everyone else. Such talent. RIP Freddie. Since 1991 there has never been another.

I was 18, just graduated, went from Germany to San Francisco and I can assure you, even on tv, this concert was unreal. Got up at an ungodly hour, was glued to the tv for basically a day. Lifelong Bowie fan, but Queen had the best set that day by a MILE. It was supposed to be "the global jukebox" and Queen just understood the assignment perfectly.

At the time of Live Aid I was serving in the British Royal Marine Commandos in a refugee camp in Ethiopia. We listened to it on the radio. We were surrounded by the full horror of the Famine, but when Queen came on the radio those poor soles who were there even reacted in a very positive way. I remember that a lot of us Royal Marine Commandos were crying watching some of the children dancing along, I'm teary eyed just remembering. I looked around at men I had fought alongside, who were tough, hardened Royal Marine Commandos who had fought a life and death war against Argentinian's in 82. By the end of Queen's set we were dancing with the children. It went along way to help build their trust in us. The famine is only one of many terrible memories I have from 35 years of active service, and over 3 years hospitalisation. But when I remember the smiles on the children's faces, and their laughter at the terrible way we danced always reminds me that humanity will always find it's way through even the worst of times. I only watched it for the first time last year, my son put it on the TV. A lot of memories came back and a lot of tears.
My amazing Wife took me to see Queen at Wembley, U.K., in 1986 two weeks after I got back from Ethiopia as a surprise, we also went to the last Queen concert they ever did. I saw Queen live 8 times in all (my wife only 6 ha ha), they were incredible live. And yes, I am an old fart.

The beer he had on the piano, was actually honey and lemon as he had a throat infection during this, and was advised by his doctor to not participate!
Folks bought their tix before Queen was announced for the charity. And look at the involvement. Freddie was told not to do the concert because of throat infection. He said hell no. In the Pepsi cups was tea with honey. Imagine Freddie here at 75% with Roger helping him out on vocals & still legendary! The concert was also going on in Philly at same time and broadcast flipped back and forth thru the day. Also, a smaller concert also going on in Australia too.
What's really amazing is that Freddie was able to sound magnificent despite having laryngitis the week before. His doctor recommended that he cancel his appearance and rest his voice but he ignored the advice and went on to make rock history. Freddie always kept tea with honey on the piano to keep his throat from drying out. He liked beer but didn't drink while working. Freddie and Brian came out to sing the final song of the concert, "Is This the World We Created".

This is an iconic concert and Freddie and Queen were on fire. The perfect audience for Freddie...The whole world! Thank you for your reaction. Crazy Little Thing Called Love is not a cover, Freddie wrote that song as a tribute to Elvis after he had passed. Freddie wrote that song in 5 - 10 minutes while soaking in a bath. Brian plays 3 different guitars on that song.

During the performance, Freddie was drinking tea with lemon and honey for his throat. However, he did have a shot of vodka just before going on, and a glass of champagne when he came off the stage.
15 years old, 1985, a small town farm kid, who's parents, had cable television...Sat thru l 12 hours starting 11 am Central time, , No Saturday chores....and this performance, as well as u2 , was mind blowing!..

Freddie is working so hard that his sweat pores are crying for relief and he makes it seem simply effortless. His vocals and presence are stratospheric.

Sorry, just found you; so, I’m late to the Comment Section! I’m a 66 y/o Glamma. You seem to enjoy the background of things. And, I’m a Trivia sponge, so here goes: They had just completed a Tour a month b4. So, they went & rented a Stadium to practice the performance. He ended up with a Throat Infection & the Doctor highly recommended he not do it bc he might lose his musical ability. He said no! Can you tell he had a severe throat infection? Most people think he was drinking booze from the cups bc on the piano. He’s drinking Honey & Tea. His command of the Audience was more than coincidence it was miraculous. Considering there were so many people there the sound was getting absorbed through them. So the people @ the back we’re following his hand gestures bc the actual sound hadn’t even reached them b4 the next sound was coming @ them. Go back & watch what his hands are doing & what the Audience is doing. NEXT: Radio Gaga is celebrating Radio bc M-TV is just getting started. LADY GAGA was a huge Freddie Fam growing up, so That was where she came up with HER STAGE NAME! You have to listen to the words to really understand the meaning. Most of us didn’t have a clue what a Band looked like unless we saw them in Person!
NEXT-MICROPHONE. At sometime along the way a Microphone Stand broke, so that was the only spilt second solution they could come up with. He realized the freedom he had to move, dance, & engage the Audience.
NEXT MICHAEL JACKSON & ELVIS CONNECTION on Song THING CALLED LOVE: It was written as his homage to Elvis-Freddie was a big fan. But, he just wasn’t sure about the song bc he didn’t want to taint Elvis. SO, he played it for Michael J. (Yes, they were friends!). And Michael told him he HAD TO, he said “Freddie, you have to”! (Can’t you just see that!?).
NEXT FREDDIE’s VOICE. HE HAD 4 extra teeth so that’s the reason he had such an overbite. He had the ability to naturally flow from Octave to Octave. It was a natural progression, for him.
SCIENTIFICALLY: Test were done on his Voice. He was able to use his Throat muscles on either side of his vocal cords. Which is normally seen in some Opera Singers. His Vocal Range was from Low Bass F, to High Soprano F! They were extremely surprised to find out that he could go from about 92Hz to 784Hz, effortlessly! See ACTUAL REPORT BELOW:
nyone who has listened to a Queen track knows that Freddie has a unique ability that still has not been truly replicated since. His ability to blend highs, lows and mid range notes cohesively and with immense precision. This skill was due to the fact that Freddie was able to create faster vibrato and harmonics than any other singer at the time. Not only this, he was able to shift through registers effortlessly. Although he naturally held a baritone voice, he primarily sang as a tenor and of course had no problem then shifting into soprano parts. One study on Freddie’s vocal range even confirmed that he was able to vary from about 92.2 Hz to 784 Hz, meaning he was reliably able to hit notes from the booming low of F#2 to the high pitch G5 - that covers a full three octaves!
LAST FUN FACT: His Lead Guitarist is playing on a Guitar he & his Father made. When he first starting to learn they were too poor to afford a high end guitar. So, they just made one! The included some “extras” that would normally have to be separate instruments to get all those features (think Concerts when you see guitarist changing Guitars depending on the Song….that’s why he didn’t)!

LEAD GUITARIST: Brian May’s family couldn’t afford a Guitar so he & his Dad made it from an old Cabinet. Because they were making it there are a lot of extra features that he wanted. It is truly a “one of a kind”!
Don’t forget that the bass player John Deacon was also an electrical engineer. He made the Deacy Amp which he used and let Brian use to make unique sounds. When Deacon retired due to Freddie’s death he gave the Deacy Amp to Brian in perpetuity. Deacon retired because he said he couldn’t listen to their music sung by anyone but Freddie. His song Friends Will Be Friends was the Queen song played at Freddie Mercury’s funeral. ❤
I saw every Queen show in Chicago from 1996 to 1982, and I believe that if FM wanted to, he could have ruled the world. There was never a moment when he didnt have the entire audience in his hands.

I read somewhere that Freddie was asked before going onstage if he was nervous. He replied, no - I was born for this darling! I can believe that he was indeed born for the stage!
I was 18 when this aired & spent the day at mates for the whole day watching the show. It was pretty slow until Queen did their set, Bob Geldoff's face when he saw the phone lines light up with donations being called in, was priceless!
I so hope you react to Somebody to Love live in Montreal. One of the best live performances I've ever seen. I probably watch at least twice a week.
And more of the songs at that concert. Except for the crowd it rivals Live Aid.

Freddie is the greatest front man of all time. He is very professional, despite of throat infection which his doctor advise him not to do it but still continue to perform. And also, the audience are not all QUEEN fans. Such an amazing performance. They are 4 great individuals that when combined comes perfection!
BTW, there are some inconsistencies in the movie especially the character of Freddie. If you want accurate details you may check documentaries regarding QUEEN. I also suggest to check History Buffs. Thank you for your great reaction.

I had just graduated, living at 'my own' place for the first time, sharing a 3 bedroom w/ four other guys was all I could afford, but it was 'freedom'.... I remember this was a huge event, they switched televising the broadcasts...what a time it was for music, 70's-80's
I am the right age and was around but unfortunately never got to see Freddie live, i had a 7 month old baby at the time so had to watch this on TV, so now in my 60s i got to see Queen + Adam Lambert in my home city of Manchester England in 2022 and the last year in Minneapolis, it was still a fantastic show and Brian is still a whizz on that home made guitar and runs around like a mad man. My new Freddie Mercury is now Ren im like an obsessed old woman, but he got me interested in music again, if you want to do more Queen you should do Somebody to love, live in Montreal, Freddies favourite song.

That was the summer before my senior year of college. I stayed at school that summer to work and take classes. I remember watching a lot of that show, especially the U.S. acts with my friends on MTV. We sent in a group donation. Still waiting on the shirt! LOL!

I used to go to all of the “Day on the Green” concerts in Oakland back in the day and it was overwhelming being in those crowds. I can’t imagine being on the field for this concert, the claustrophobia would be insane. I guess it would be worth it to see this show!

Love the hands in the air and no phones reference. Iwas 10. No memory of this. Boo!!! Music is so great!!! And this performance was untouchable. Love of music and just fun. The lyrics hit differently now.

Freddie wasn’t drinking beer. He did not drink when he was performing. He would take tea with lemon and honey and Water on stage with him. Now was he high when he performed? Possibly. But he did not drink alcohol/beer when he performed.

The thing I’ve noticed after watching this performance at least a thousand times, is that Freddie was really showing off for this crowd. If you watch him after he finishes Radio Gaga, he looks to stage left where his new boyfriend Jim Hutton is standing and gives him a look like “watch this” and then goes into his Dayo performance. Jim had a front row seat to musical history
I noticed that quick glance and thought the guy on the side looked like Jim Hutton, though I could not be sure.

There were 2 concerts simultaneously playing. UK and USA. I watched it live on TV. Freddie didn't drink beer during concerts but tea and honey for his throat. Queen did their own songs. Not covers.
72,000 people at Wembley. No sound check before going on, and the crowd were not all Queen fans (lots of other acts performing on the day) yet Freddie Mercury commanded them all! Freddie had a throat infection that day and was advised by doctors not to perform...and he STILL nailed it!! As for the guitar...not bad for a home made instrument!!

The fake police men were comedians well-known in the UK. Status Quo was the opening act (Rockin all over the World) who "weren't up to date with the latest trends". And the woman in Belgium meant the crowd was really loud. 😂😂
Queen was the only act that practiced until the set was perfect and perfectly timed.
It was also the first time that they saw the audience reaction instead of just hearing it because of the time of day.
I watched Bohemian Rhapsody movie on the weekend on Disney then watched Queen Live Aid straight after. Freddy was outstanding on stage.
I was 17 when Live Aid was on TV. Just the best time the 80s! Wish I was there. Didn't get to Wembley Stadium till 4 years later lol Those two policemen were well known comedians...dang can't remember their names lol but Freddy wow...in the movie he was worried about his voice by this stage but he was amazing on stage. Queen was one of the Best. Loved all their songs!

Great reaction. I was in that crowd back in 1985 and was 16 years old. We didn't know whether Queen were going to appear as they weren't on the official line up tickets so after the whole crowd feeling rather tired and weary when Queen came on we just all came to live and they were electrifying .... I have been a fan ever since and am now 55. I saw them twice the following year in 1986 again at Wembley and then Freddie's ever last LIVE performance with Queen at Knebworth in August 1986. Basically back on a Saturday in 1985 at 6.40pm the UK were ruled by a different Queen !!!! Stay safe from Manchester UK

The first 'big' concert I ever went to was Queen - "A Night at the Opera" tour in 1976. 'Bohemian Rhapsody"Live!!! I was 15! 🙂 I've felt pretty lucky about that my whole life.
Freddy was only 90% on the day. His doctor advised him not to sing, as he could damage his voice. So he reined it in, and Roger helped him out. Also Freddy's guitar wasn't coming out over the PA. They all realised, and covered for it. What a professional band. Total respect for them all.
