38 years later this still holds the title as the greatest live performance in rock history! Freddie was a complete master of crowd control. 72,000 at Wembley, a total of 1.2 billion globally watching on TV. Please react to Somebody To Love live Montreal 1981. This performance is ranked as the second greatest live performance! Phenomenal♥️👑🎸🎤🥁🎹

Freddie was the true showman, he was unwell that day and doctors advised him to not go on stage and perform with risk of damaging his voice. A performance that will last a thousand lifetimes. During an interview Freddie was asked what his favourite instrument to play was, his reply in true Freddie fashion "the crowd my dear, the crowd"

The truly amazing thing was this was not a "Queen" crowd per se. The tickets had been sold weeks before Queen agreed to play this venue and therefore they weren't even on the line up. But, in true Queen fashion, they stole the show!

  • @susanengland3919
    @susanengland3919 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +19

It wasn’t only Queen who realized they had been sensational. Paul Gambaccini, who was part of the BBC broadcasting team at Live Aid, recalled the awe among other superstar musicians watching backstage. “Everybody realized that Queen was stealing the show,” said Gambaccini. These were the very words Elton John uttered when he rushed into Mercury’s trailer after the set. “You bastards, you stole the show,” joked the charismatic star.
“Queen smoked ’em. They just took everybody. They walked away being the greatest band you’d ever seen in your life, and it was unbelievable,” said Dave Grohl of Foo Fighters. “And that’s what made the band so great; that’s why they should be recognized as one of the greatest rock bands of all time, because they could connect with an audience.”

  • @1031irishqueen

Each group that performed had exactly 20 minutes on stage..that's why the songs are cut into shorter versions...they did a brilliant job of timing! They simply are the GOAT! PLEASE CHECK OUT "LIVE AT WEMBLEY" you won't be sorry...

They had to cut the longer songs short since each group was limited to 20 minutes. Queen chose to include as many of their hit songs as possible which meant they could only do the first verse of the longest songs. Freddie had laryngitis the week before this concert. His doctor recommended that he cancel this concert and rest his voice, but Freddie ignored the advice and went on to make rock history.

This is such an incredible set from this concert. If you watch closely, Brian plays 3 different guitars on Crazy Little Thing Called Love, an acoustic, a Stratocaster and his own Red Special. I was not at this show but it was broadcast around the world and so all of us got to experience it. My favorite Queen live performance is White Queen live at Odeon, Hammersmith 1975. There is a long instrumental break in that performance that is beyond belief that it could be live. Freddie is in perfect voice as well and the whole band is just spot on for the entire song. Thank you for your reaction.

I remember watching this live on TV. I was 15 years old. It’s nice to see somebody watch it for the first time. Shane nice reaction. I watched most of live aid, Wembley Stadium, in London, and JFK stadium in Philadelphia. There were a lot of fabulous bands, and singers. Queen definitely stole the whole show. A lot of live aid was very memorable, but Queen was definitely unforgettable. They’re just a really tight band with the best front man ever.❤️✌️🌼

As a drummer you might be interested to know that the studio recording of "We Will Rock You" did not include drums. The stomping sound was just that, the band and others, stomping on the boards of the drum riser.
Great reaction to a show-stealing performance.
Since you mentioned not seeing Queen live performances, I suggest "Somebody to Love" Montreal 1981. There are many live performances and concerts from Queen online but there are also hidden gems on their albums that were briefly or never performed live that are worth checking out. Cheers!

Their soundcheck was Roger hitting a couple toms, May with a crunching chord on guitar, a thump on bass, and some scales on piano. Go. They finished something like eight seconds over. And correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t think we had Jumbotrons for the crowds then either.

Bowie followed them on and as they passed each other Bowie laughed and said "Bastards"! He knew no one was going to top them.

I'm so glad you reacted to this iconic, greatest prefomance of all time! They were on fire that night! Perfection all the way around. I weep sometimes when I see it...for a lot of reasons. Queen hd a wonderful work ethic. They practiced, practiced, practiced, and were perfect because of it. 4 talented musicians that came together to form magic that is unmatched ❤ Your Dad looks a bit like our dear Freddie. I love your enthusiasm. ❤❤

thanks, Shane! so glad you did this.. and that you appreciate the BAND.. this was never "Freddie & some back-up guys".. every member of this band wrote at least one #1 hit... as a fan since teenage years... I was privileged to see Queen three times with Freddie (1978-1981)... BTW, you definitely need to see the live concert in Montreal 1981 - it's recently been released in IMAX... unfortunately where I am in Wisconsin, I can't find it yet...

So good. It’s nice that it brings back memories of your dad.
FYI-there is an encore. Just Brian, his 12 string & Freddie.

Did you hear the whole crowd start singing from the first note? And they kept singing till the very end. You can see why this is considered to be the greatest live rock performance of all time.

You should react to 'Who Wants To Live Forever' live in Budapest 1986 and the crowd singing Bohemian Rhapsody at the Green Day concert in 2017 Hyde Park. R.I.P to your father!!

The greatest part was they were not a Queen crowd, but Freddie had control of them from the time he came on stage. I was stationed in England at the time and watched it on television. I thought it was amazing then and I think it’s amazing now.

i believe they had 19 or so minutes and if they didnt finish their set, they would be cut off. They had 12 seconds left. Shows how much they rehearsed. its been acknowledged as being the best live rock performance in history.

Go in and listen to Tommy Johansson who was a guitarist in Sabaton, do covers of queen, abba, gary more and a lot of others. super talent. Sings like a god, is a multi-instrumentalist, at least 10 instruments, does everything himself. He's amazing.

Anything from the Queen concert in Montreal is great - it was recorded in really high quality. Start at the beginning where they do an amazing fast version of We will rock you. The Queen Rainbow concert from their early days is great for their heavier phase. I saw them about 12 times and they were always totally professional and brilliant!

Freddie was told by a doctor not to perform as he had a bad throat. However, Queen did perform and they smashed it. Apparently Freddie said it was like gargling with glass when he sang. Each act had 20 minutes and if they went over they were cut off. However, Queen finished exactly on time.
