    The best guide on how to land a helicopter in ARMA 3! In this raw tutorial video, Grumpy Joe reveals the secrets to performing fast, smooth & precise combat landings in ARMA 3 while flying the hummingbird helicopter. This is not another video telling you to "cut power, bank right and pitch up"! No, in this video, Grumpy Joe gets in the weeds and shows you the tips and tricks to setting up your display in order to fly 1st person (without using head-tracker), how to configure your controller settings in ARMA 3 and demonstrates the exact control inputs needed to perform a true combat landing.
    There's too much to list but this video covers all the information you will need in order to land the hummingbird helicopter in King of the Hill (KOTH)!
    PRO TIP: The information on setting up your controller configuration is what Grumpy calls, "letting the genie out of the bottle" and will improve your flying ability immediately!

      I've started a new video series on how to land. The importance of the tail rotor will be in the next episode, and is the key to a coordinated turn landing.

    This Video Is a MUST WATCH for any aspiring ARMA 3 transport pilot. My piloting skills have improved by leaps and bounds thanks to Grumpy Joe. I have watched all of the Helicopter landing videos and tutorials, and none hold a candle to Joe's in depth breakdown of in game settings and instruction of the actual combat landing. If Joe was selling this lesson he could offer it with a money back guarantee. It's that damn good.

    Great Video Grumpy Joe! I have just clocked over 150 flight hours in Arma3 with Hotas x52 and pedals and I used to fly big and fast RC Helis and actually thought about using my DX9 Spectrum controller as I could do pretty much anything with the heli with that. I have been practicing both forward bleed flares and got pretty good, but they are only really designed for steep glide path approach because as you clearly demonstrated, there is no correction (or very little) with a shallow low and high speed approach. Sure you could wag the tail and roll collective left and right, but it is still a messy way to descend and very "Sitting duck material" if you are in combat. I was doing lots of J Hook Landings as well and am getting not to bad on them either. This video is fantastic and demonstrates well how you can shave off speed in SPADES... to correct quickly and accurately any error you may have done on approach. Top Job. I have not entered the multi player Arma3 servers yet as I did not want to get a bad rep for smashing up helos and killing my platoon members. I will clock some more hours practicing this and refining it. I have just done about 3 solid hours on your approach and it is getting more and more accurate every time I do it. Must have been about 200 attempts by now. Cheers Westy - I have some of my flying on Your Tube ... so I can see where I came from skill wise and to also share my learnings and settings. yours are bang on how I have my hotas x52set up.

      @Westy Crypto Glad I could help. I thought about doing a series of videos breaking down the various aspects of landing to update my original video and make it more digestible. One last tip: there's a scenario you can download for free from steam called something like " koth lz trainer" or something like that, that allows you to practice landing into kavala city, with AI enemy in the ground that shot at you. I highly recommend it!

    I can't believe I never thought to fly with my RC controller. I have years of quad flying on a Taranis and now a TX16S, was looking to replace my X56 (broken 😢) for Arma, came across your videos and have been so impressed by your flying I thought trying your setup would be worthwhile. Come to find out I already have it, and WOW, I have way more control than I ever did with the X56. And with this clear-cut guide, I am finally pulling off some combat landings I can be proud of. Still have lots of practice to reach your level though! Hope I see you flying out in the wild sometime, do you play on any public servers?

    • @realgrumpyjoe

      I've been preaching the benefits of using an rc controller for years and it was the final piece in my puzzle with flying. I, like you, had my transmitter sitting around and used everything (mouse, ps4, hotas) before switching.
      Hope my video helps. Get your controller setup with proper dual rates and expo in the game settings and don't touch them.
      It takes practice, but if you look at some of my early videos and compare them to my recent ones, you can see my progression.
      I play k.o.t.h. on code 4 gaming servers, mostly US2 and on the Russian koth infantry server as they do not have spawn trucks, do your able to fly a lot.

    I really enjoyed this video Grumpy..I literally have just got Arma 3 and only yesterday finished boot camp. I’ve already tried a helicopter, but it was in a scenario and it actually put me under a lot of pressure. I use twin vkb nxt premium joysticks and trying to map it without fully understanding the basic flight mechanics has given me a headache I don’t need with my lack of experience in the game. So I’m concentrating on just getting experience in server handling, running scenarios progression and trying different maps…I’ve been watching Arma as a game for some years, but only now pressed the buy button…thanks again 🫡

    Great video! When you say zero thottle, do you mean you are pushing down on the Collective? Does that mean 50% is Neutral position on the Gimbal stick?

    • @realgrumpyjoe
      @realgrumpyjoe  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, when I say zero throttle, I mean to hold the collective all the way down; ie. Hold the collective down key or if using a throttle, have your throttle all the way down so there is no power going to the rotors.
      50% is the neutral position. This neutral position is also the hover position. If using a flight stick and throttle, setting a dead zone for the throttle is key to finding the hover position quickly.
      How this helps,
      Grumpy

      @@realgrumpyjoe Thanks for getting back to me. I'm using mouse and keyboard so when I press down on collective I seem to be losing altitude too quickly. I have managed to make some better landings after watching your video but need to keep practicing the timing of all the manouvers.

    • @realgrumpyjoe
      @realgrumpyjoe  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello,
      You need to pull back on cyclic to maintain/control altitude when holding down collective. I just used my mouse to land the heli and is it as I say. Start by practicing forward landings in order to judge how to use mouse/cyclic to maintain altitude.
      And keep practicing, good luck

    BTW, wanted to ask. Did you try to bind other sticks of taranis? I have the same controller and almost the same settings, but I wander, why I cant bind, lets say SF and SH as WeaponChange/Fire. Did you try it?

    • @realgrumpyjoe
      @realgrumpyjoe  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes, I have bound the 4 toggle switches on the top of the transmitter for such things as looking left and right, zoom, fire, engine off, etc.
      In order to bind these switches, you must "activate" them first within the transmitter settings. After you do this, arma will "see" the switches and you'll be able to assign them to functions within the game. See here: oscarliang.com/setup-switch-opentx/

      @@realgrumpyjoe Ive done it already(activated in transmitter) but no actual result in arma3. But I have figured out how to make it work. Joystick Gremlin + VJoy => so I can remap axis (don't know why SF and SH are treated on my PC as axis) to buttons in virtual joystick (vJoy), later I can add a virtual joystick to arma and use FrSky sticks as buttons. I need to test it anyway, but looks promising

      One issue I had when I went in game to bind a switch, is that I needed to unplug my mouse when binding, as the game would adda mouse function with the transmitter switch. Very weird.

    Note for Joystick + Throttle combo gamers : With the collective (analog) settings it can be difficult to maintain an even 0 collective since analog throttles can be hard to find the dead center point on. Playing with the settings I tried binding the directional hat switch on my throttle to the digital collective (The one in settings that is labeled collective raise / collective lower).
    I noticed that if you
    1. pull the physical throttle back to 0 and stay there (or any position keeping the throttle still)
    2. tap the button you bound to digital collective
    3. until you make an input on the physical throttle, you maintain a hover (50% collective, neutral state) without having to find the center position on your throttle.
    i can try to elaborate further if anyone wants to know

    • @realgrumpyjoe
      @realgrumpyjoe  ปีที่แล้ว

      Why don't you just assign your collective to the NON ANALOG area, and then set your deadzone, dual rate and exponential for the collective as I've described in the video? You'll have no problem finding the hover position with your collective.

    Bleed flaring is good for cold insertions but definitely not good for KOTH as you get shot as soon as you are slower than 130 kph and out in the open.
