Yeah, that about sums it up. Especially with Valve. I love Steam, but they really should just either sell off their video game IPs or hire some third-parties that'd actually have some passion for those IPs. Do you even _know_ how many Indie teams would _kill_ to make official Valve games?
@Justinn Zamora I wouldn't say "out of tech" since they revolutionize it. I'd say they are behind on standards like good online functions. Seriously, I love Nintendo but wow... how can you be a genius at game and console design but not know the basics on what a console's priorities are
“It says something that their biggest fail ended up being good for the gaming industry in the long run” That sounds like some next level anime villain quote that Dio Brando would say if they was Nintendo
Sony could have taken Nintendos IPs and we wouldn't have gotten many of the great games from them these days. Splatoon, Pikmin, Animal Crossing and Smash. Just thinking that Smash didn't exist makes me want to cry
I actually like how he ended the list by saying. Nintendo's greed and idiocy created its worst competitor aka the PlayStation and actually made the industry a better place.
I mean the deal was really bad in Nintendo case to quote "Under their agreement, Sony would develop and retain control over the SNES-CD disc format, effectively ceding a large amount of control over software licensing to Sony" In the end it was two companies trying to fuck each other so is dumb to trying to paint one better than the other
Finally, someone mentions it. Sure, you can send it back to be replaced, but if you live somewhere without a Nintendo company... Well, let's just say it was cheaper to buy a pre-owned one from Eb Games than it would have been to ship it ONE WAY!!!
@@insertclevernamehere1186 My left joycon started drifting after the 4 days of playing on my newly bought Nintendo Switch, I thought I broke it that really depressed and upset me because it was my first console I've ever ownded and it was only 4 days and I hadn't dropped or mishandled my switch. I then bought 2 more joycons to replace the first ones, but after a while the first set of joycons started working again properly again, but now 4 joycons and I switch them out if they start to drift which doesn't happen regularly but it does happen but now I can fix the drift.
Might have been forgotten or not considered enough of a fail to be warranted, though considering Joycon Drift is an even more horrific notion when you take in to account the hard-wired Joycons of the Nintendo Switch Lite, it's more than likely the former. Oh, yeah, you think it's bad enough having to potentially shell out $70 to buy two new Joycons to replace the ONE controller's joystick drift? Yeah, DOUBLE that price and you get why I was NOT too keen on the main concept of the Switch Lite: it's cheaper in practice and in the short run, but taking in to account the possibility of Drift, in the LONG run, it's likely to cost you a prettier penny than your vanilla $300 Switch! And that's BEFORE you take in to account its incompatibility with docked mode, eliminating HALF of what makes the Switch unique as a console in the first place and making it essentially a more powerful single-screened 2DS! On that note, I have to wonder if Nintendo's half-baked cheaper console alternatives was just forgotten about or wasn't considered a serious blunder, and to that end I answer with the 2DS itself: WHY TF WERE PEOPLE OKAY WITH THIS!? Yeah, sure, it's a VERY cheap alternative to the 3DS without 3D...or the clam-shell design that was a staple feature of the ORIGINAL DS released back in 2004! Yeah, you can't put the 2DS in Sleep Mode because that would require you to CLOSE the console...something you cannot DO when your DS is basically a SLAB! Sure, they EVENTUALLY went back on the clam-shell design with the New 2DS XL, but that was released FOUR YEARS after the initial release date of the original 2DS back in 2013! Man, it's hard being a Nintendo fan sometimes... :/
The irony of it all, their biggest failure was a massive boon for video gaming overall. So even when they fail....they still win... Well played Nintendo...well played. (Doesn't stop their blunders from happening)
Well, they're still mistakes, and really bad ones at that. It's not like Nintendo chose to create the biggest names in the gaming industry just cause they felt like it. ...or did they?
I think it depends on what you're gatekeeping for and how. Like some DnD/Pathfinder players not wanting new players in their games because they dont want to explain "how to play" or rather have a team of min-maxing assholes.
gatekeeping as in keeping the shitty games from flooding into the industry? yeah they did decent in that regard, but even Hoover Dam couldnt hold back that much shit...
The idea of Nintendo trying to remain on top of the food chain by basically being a backstabbing d-bag to people including would be allies only for their tactics resulting in instead making the very enemies it was trying to get rid of is both an ironic and amusing one. I can also tell that this won't be the end of fails video in general if the implication at the end is anything to go by.
31:38 Fun fact: There is a story on Alternate History where Nintendo and Sony did collab on the PlayStation, called "Player Two Start". The butterfly effects are crazy.
9. I only had those Bongos for DKJB, and those bongos drove my parents nuts when I started banging on them early on the morning to play it. 8. Well at least it looks like things've been patched up. Square Enix made The World Ends With You for the DS (which eventually led to a Switch port) so at least... oh wait, Square still wouldn't let Nintendo put Final Fantasy characters in Smash Ultimate... with the exception of Cloud. 1. There's a reason why those Phillips CDI games became a part of TH-cam Poop history!
@@dylansmith5206 Yes. The Japanese fans. To put it simply what Banjo Kazooie is to us, Dragon Quest is to Japan. It's one of the biggest franchises over there. Chances are a Japanese person is asking the same thing you're saying except about Banjo.
9. Donkey Kong Jungle Beat is the precursor to Shadow the Hedgehog claiming the E10+ rating. 8. The World Ends With You got an anime and a great sequel to the original called NEO: The World Ends With You! They were also responsible for giving Square Enix and Disney for greenlighting Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days. We even got to play multiplayer as the Organization XIII members. 2. *Cough cough* Big House ban. Thank god they made up with Sephiroth in Smash Bros, and saving E3 2021 with Metroid Dread and among others. 1. When there's smoke, they pinch back!
The reason Sega barely makes any games outside of Sonic, Yakuza, and phantasy star, is because they also have pachinko machines. So their a less evil Konami.
33:20 The only silver lining of this is that it lead to the creation of TH-cam Poops. XD So basically to recap all of the biggest fails of each company since the first list: EA: History of Work Time Crunch Konami: Their Shady Business Practices Sony: Arrogance and Them Thinking Way too Ahead of Themselves Capcom: Mismanaging the Mega Man franchise Microsoft: The Red Ring of Death Ubisoft: UPlay being a total disaster Bethesda: Screwing small companies like Obsidan Square Enix: Their disasterous E3 Confrence of 2015 SEGA: Mishandling the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise Activision: Lawsuits, lawsuits everwhere Blizzard: Merging with Activision then becoming corporate Valve: Valve Time and their history of delays Nintendo: The Phillips CD-I and accidentally creating the Playstation
Posted before the video goes live, here are my predictions in no order: • E3 2008 • Virtual Boy • Wii U • Neglecting multiple franchises • Nintendo Creators Program • Multiple copyright takedowns • Partnering with Phillips CD-i
@@Othermage Nintendo didn't create the PlayStation. It was originally going to be a CD add-on for the SNES but they decided to work with Phillips instead, and we all know how well that turned out. Also losing Rare was Microsoft's doing, since they bought them.
Mike Yokite well, it WAS Nintendo’s fault for practically creating their competition. As for Rare, Nintendo could have easily bought them beforehand. Probably.
Nintendo: "I'm gonna kill you." PlayStation: "You idiot! You made me! You stabbed me in the back all those years ago. That wasn't easy for me to get over, and don't think that I didn't try!"
Nintendo obviously made both a smart and dumb decision. The dumb part of trying to join with a company who is rich enough to buy you but smart enough to leave them to continue building on their own company. Phillips however handled Nintendos precious characters and IPs poorly which is probably a reason why they are so protective over them these days.
Hmmm...so Nintendo's worst failure turned out to be one of the gaming industry biggest blessing. So even when Nintendo screws up, unlike other companies he has done this type of list, it seems to make them better. Granted Nintendo is late to the party on a lot of things but better late than never it seems. What I did anticipate was Nintendo list of fails was not going to be as catastrophic to the company as the fails of other companies he has done. Overall, these fails have been very enjoyable and informative.
Nintendo has a tremendous level of prestige. They were there at the forefront when games were beginning and they are still at the forefront today. Not solely on the forefront but one of the major players nonetheless.
I must admit. The way you talked about number 1 really felt deep. I never thought of it in that way, and despite being a fail, I guess we all win in the end with that one. Thanks for these amazing list about game company fails. They really brightened my day when the came out.
That just adds 15 level of complexity to Cloud being in smash!" 9 months after this video, Sephiroth says hi... so I guess we should add a 16th level of complexity to Cloud being in smash.
Last time I checked Nintendo doesn't try to buy out the entire competition. Did you know that Sony just recently bought the right to Silent Hill, Castlevania and Metal Gear??? That sounds like someone trying to buy out the competition. Disney is a Monopoly that buys everything in the entertainment industry that has worth. Nintendo only owns a very few. Game freak isn't own by them. Neither is Monolith, Platinum or Suda51s company. They all just have connections and published titles for them. The Pokemon company could easily just be putting games on every console but they know that all of their fans are from Nintendo.
Kyle Woodowens Small correction: Nintendo actually does indeed own Monolith Soft, as they bought them back in 2007 during the development of Xenoblade Chronicles. The other companies they don’t own though, which’s why their games (sans Pokémon and now Bayonetta) are published on other platforms.
#10: Didn't see this one coming. Agree on it though. #9: I like those bongo drums too. #8: Never heard of this. #7: Oi. I still can't believe I dodged all of those bullets from those games. #6: I forgot how bad those consoles were. #5: Oh my god, I hate this. I want Advance Wars and Mother back! #4: I never keep up with E3, and I still have yet to see the Wii Music section. #3: I've only played a few online matches on SSB4 3DS, and it was a nightmare. Somehow, Kid Icarus Uprising multiplayer was more responsive and stable. #2: Yep, called it. Nintendo seriously need to chill down with the fan games. Dishonorable mentions: Huh?! #1: YUP. IT'S HERE. Surprisingly, half of the stuff I predicted are not in the list.
"Tone deaf" is a very accurate pun on what E3 2008 was like. I've only watched bits and pieces of it myself, but E3 2008 was just an all-around bust, if memory serves.
Yay Uprising! Also I'm not a person whose into online-focused games, I'd rather have in person connection. Hence why I didn't bother with online in Smash until now at least. I only got Switch Online as a means to play with my friends during the Coronavirus season.
Thank goodness I never played on the N64 DD, Virtual Boy, or CD-i, but I did play on a Wii U, and I loved it. No, I didn't own the console itself, a friend did. As of making this comment, that was about ten years ago.
honestly this feels kind of funny that one good thing _somewhat_ came out of everything off of this list, be it Nintendo learning their lesson/trying to do better, or another company making the gaming scene a lot bigger and better.
I am a tad disappointed that this is the final company fail list because there's plenty of others that I can think of, but this sub series was amazing nonetheless. (PS joshscorcher, if you ever decide to change your mind and continue with this series, PLEASE do top 10 rockstar fails, or maybe even top 10 take 2 fails.)
I think we might be getting a sequel countdown that looks at the other companies blunders in one list. A good entry for that sequel countdown involving Koei-Tecmo is how giving Nintendo half-ownership of the survival-horror awesomeness that is the Fatal Frame aka Project Zero was in hindsight a stupid move on Tecmo-Koei's part mostly because giving Nintendo half-ownership led to some stupid decisions like FF/PZ4: Curse of the Lunar Mask introducing some tacked-on motion sensor gimmicks that weren't so great, the WII Port of the most beloved entry in the franchise FF/PZ2: Crimson Butterfly royally sucked, the 3DS spinoff title Spirit Camera: The Cursed Memoir while it had a good, and unique concept that would in theory take advantage of the 3DS's Camera, and AR Tech was in reality a mediocre game whose AR Tech barely functioned unless you were playing in specific environments, and then there's the borderline debacle concerning the true fifth entry in the series FF/PZ5: Maiden of Black Water which came out for the WII U mostly due to it's US release basically while fans over in Japan, and Europe actually got a uncensored physical copy with the title Project Zero 5: Maiden of Black Water, over here in the US the game was titled Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water meaning unless you were a fan of the franchise and already well aware that four previous games had been released you would've mistaken Maiden of Black Water as the first game in the series, and then there's these two issues 1st: there's the fact while Japan and Europe actually got a proper physical release Maiden of Black Water we didn't get a physical release in the US instead it was a downloadable title now normally that's not a bad thing but in Maiden of Black Water's case it was a bad thing mostly because the GB requirements to download were unreasonably massive to put it bluntly in order to have room on the WII U to download and play it you had to have basically 0 games to at most 2 games installed on the WII U to meet Maiden of Black Water's unreasonably massive GB requirements, and then there's the unneeded censorship that the US release of Maiden of Black Water got.
23:29 JOSHSCORCHER: Oi, guess what, Scorpio-Bee! Have you heard of these Computermabobs?!! They can operate in colour, and they can branch out to folks all around the world conveniently, and without issue! GREENSCORPION: Well, razz mah berries, that’s some dandy technology! The excitement I had for Cloud in Smash eerily was similar to that of when Banjo & Kazooie came: "OHMIGOODNESS!!!!! CLOUD'S COMING HOME!!!!! WHAT A TIME TO BE ALIVE!!!!"
An alternate timeline where Kratos Nathan Drake Crash Bandicoot Spyro the Dragon Sackboy Kat Jak and Daxter Sly cooper Ratchet and Clank Nariko Cole McGrath And many others in smash bros
Funny, aside the bad stuff each thing on the list did Pretty much every fail on this list did at least one thing that positively affected the gaming community Example? Watch up to #1
#1 I can agree with, but their treatment of fan-created content, not so much. Thankfully, I think they're starting to pull that stick out of their butts.
Luckily, it learned from one mistake.... They stopped disrespecting 3rd party developers as much. I feel like i'm going to regret saying that statement...
6:35 judging by AVGN’s reaction to it in his game boy accessories episode alone looks like a lot of people had a lot of fun with that thing also fun fact it was declared the smallest digital camera when it was released
I'd say both a fail and a success. Had they not made an enemy out of Sony, they wouldn't be working to chuck out all these Nintendo games just like Sony and PS games, as well as adding others to the mix like Microsoft and Xbox. It was a fail...but at the same time something good came out of this fail. Like...really good.
I'm a little sad to see this series end. I was gonna suggest doing a countdown where you look at the fails of Indie Devs. Look at some of the stupid and scummy thing that the independent guys tried to pull.
this is hardly an end to the Fails videos, but now the lists will be yearly fails across ALL boards, and Warcraft 3 Reforged will likely be the #1 of the 2020 countdown.
And so ends a saga! Thank you very much for the entertainment, Josh, and for all that is good and holy, stay safe out there. World needs peeps like you more than ever in these trying times.
After some recents events involving Nintendo, I honestly can't wait to hear Josh make a new fails list next month. I'll always love the big N but it physically hurts me to see them make huge screwups.
I remember how annoying it was being a Gamecube owner and begging every title advertised to be available on the little cubey boi. Learning why that was was even more annoying. This countdown was highly entertaining and had the best ending ever.
Hoping you'll do a video on Warner Bros. fails as well. They may not primarily be a game company but their screw-ups including Arkham Knight's broken PC port, the shady review embargo for LOTR:SOM, and the stuffing of pay-to-win crap in the sequel deserve more coverage than they've already gotten. Also, this isn't because I'm still salty after all these years from pre-ordering Arkham Origins and being sold a buggy rush job that kept crashing to the point my save data got corrupted and I had to go through all the bullshit including collectibles again. Not. At. All.
That's not even considering their greatest mistake - Manhandling Titus to the point that Superman 64 became the worst game on the N64... Yeah, a lot of what made that game bad was executive meddling. They're the reason every other stage had Rings floating everywhere.
You think Warner Bros. gaming division are bad? Do you even KNOW what Universal Interactive were like? They were basically doing what EA are doing now 20 years before EA became the infamous name that they are! Sure, we love games like the Crash and Spyro trilogy... the devs were quite literally sweat-shop developing the games because of Universal! HOW HAS THE INDUSTRY NOT LEARNT FROM ITS MISTAKES?!
No sarcasm; I love how Josh just took all the funny and entertaining elements of reviewers like Doug Walker and incorporated them into his style. And UNLIKE Walker, he isn’t an abusive hypocrite that mistreats his coworkers and fanbase. Gives me hope that one day, I can reignite my dream of starting up a career on this site.
Outside of a yearly list, you could always do specific fails from a multitude of companies. Like, if they have common themes, put them in the slot. If they're outstanding in any way, put them in the slot. Nobody said it _had_ to be just one company at a a time.
Well, considering how just about everyone acts towards them, I'd say Nintendo not letting people get away with violating copyright laws and them not being willing to let Sony stab them in the back upon finding out the agreement they signed would have given Sony ownership of the Nintendo games that used the peripheral. Granted, their choice of partners and timing of their announcement are things I could accept, but them abandoning Sony being used as a fail by so many comes off as the accusers being naive. The Wii U will probably be on here, but that's not really fair, because it's a great system that was sabotaged by third party companies when they learned Nintendo wouldn't let EA have control of their online after the disaster that happened with the Wii and DS servers that caused them to shut down. Anyway, things I think should be on here: Shigeru Miyamoto's more recent decisions (the "suggestions" he gave for the 3DS Paper Mario, forcing Star Fox Zero to be made with the gameplay mechanic gimmicks it had, and not letting a new F-Zero game be made due to not being able to come up with a new gameplay gimmick for it) The Virtual Boy The Nintendo Switch Online service Getting rid of the Virtual Console when going from the 3DS and Wii U to the Switch I'd put all the stuff with Sword and Shield, but that's on Game Freak, which, despite what many people think, isn't part of Nintendo
yeah i REAAAAAAAALLLY didnt want making the playstation to be number one but what do you know IT WAS and im somehow mad yet not mad mad b/c of the sony getting the license to nintendo franchises so if they did go along it might get messy not mad b/c nintendo helped the game comunity grow by essentialy being an asshole towards sony maybe if they called number one "trying to destroy sony" id be somewhat fine with it
This is exactly what I was talking about when I said "which, despite what many people think, isn't part of Nintendo." Game Freak isn't own by The Pokemon Company, The Pokemon Company is partially owned by three different companies, among which are Nintendo and Game Freak. Game Freak is its own company that isn't bound to Nintendo.
@@e1iteyoshi998 You kinda have that backwards. The Pokémon Company is a joint investment between Game Freak, Nintendo, and Creatures Inc. Ever heard of "Tembo the Badass Elephant"? That's a Game Freak game that, to this day, is not on a Nintendo platform. Also, Little Town Hero is getting a release for the PS4.
Nintendo is like your favorite grandfather. Always there for family time, but sometimes Nintendo makes mistakes... sometimes big ones. But unlike other companies like Sony, Capcom, Valve, and especially EA... Nintendo can be forgiven with open arms. I mean, their biggest one was the Nintendo Switch which brought back veterans who played Nintendo back from the NES era which is an AMAZING feat.
Okay, on the Mother example in the segment on not reviving franchises, that's because Itoi doesn't want to make a new Mother game. It doesn't excuse not bringing Mother 3 to the US, but as for not making a new game, it's understandable if the original creator doesn't want it made anymore. Its not like Mother was the biggest cash cow they've ever had anyway
Eh I don't really buy into that Square didn't stop making Final Fantasy games when Sakaguchi left the company, SEGA didn't stop making Sonic when Yuji Naka left that's not much of an excuse someone new can direct
@@KeyBladeMaster-Dan There are two major differences here. First, afaik, the creators of those two never asked for it to end when they left, whereas Itoi asked for Mother to end where it did. Second, Sonic and Final Fantasy are smash hits that are insanely popular, whereas Mother has always been niche at best
New dishonourable mention: This happened recently and this just hurts. They made their own Splatoon tournament with barely a reward and sent a cease and desist to someone else forming a Smash tournament. They really have no business to get in the way of someone else’s passion. Though, I guess that falls under Number 2 in this video.
I think was addressed in the 2020 fails. I also wouldn't call this a Number 2 given since the actual Number 2 is Nintendo's copyright BS (which this would fall under) and Number 3 is doodoo online and online services. Maybe Number 3.5.
Fun Fact: (Similarly to 27:57) Scott Cawthon, the creator of Five Nights at Freddy's, has given some of his own money to help further the development of existing FNaF fan games and even allowed them to port their own fan games to both mobile and even consoles along side the official FNaF games. As of this moment Scott has funded a total of 5 fan game franchises which includes a total of 13 games.
Nintendo did not shoot themselves in the foot with the Sony deal. They aimed with precision, shot each of their 10 toes one by one, pierced their feet with screwdrivers and then poured salt and vinegar on the wounds. But, as Jeremy Clarkson once said, "you can do something for love, you can do something for money, but there's nothing quite so satisfying as doing something out of spite". Greatest examples - the Lamborghini Miura, the Ford GT40, and the Sony Playstation.
Nintendo gave up on a deal with Sony for the Philips cd-i instead of negotiating with Sony Nintendo was a big company they could afford to do a little negotiating but this is Japan we're talkin about big Pride
Nintendo’s biggest fail was indeed creating their rival the Sony PlayStation, but to be honest it felt like this NEEDED to happen. What WOULD the timeline of the Nintendo PlayStation have been like?
Sega might still be making consoles, Xbox would be largely unchanged, if not more successful, and Sony would've bought Nintendo by 2000 imo. That or the Sony/Nintendo conglomerate would've been antitrusted off in 2009
#001 In the alternate timeline, we would have the GamePyramid and the controllers are similar to that of the Playstation buttons. Don't know how successful it would be but.....
I read somewhere that a big reason we don't get a new F-Zero is because Nintendo can't think of anything new to do with it, to which I say, fantastic, don't, give us full grid online racing and most of us would be happy with that. The Wipeout series doesn't do much new and it sells great.
@@WhiteDarkness3113 Actually, Mark Haynes (Alvin Earthworm) is actually back on track with Super Mario Bros. Z reboot, he just reuploaded Episode 1 with minor tweaks to it on his channel as well as the complete original series as well.
yes indeed, thankfully the game is still out there to enjoy, while not finished you can still see and take in all that was created. and sadly with the death of Pokemon Essentials this leads to the end of many Pokemon Fan Games due to the engine being at their core.
For the niche franchises, I see them just playing it safe. Why waste millions on franchises with a niche audience when you can make another Mario game that guarantees millions?
@@scissorman44 in earthbound/ mothers case was lack of promotion and that stunt they did on their gaming magazine with the smell features that said "because this game stinks" yeah not the best idea they had at that time
@@WhiteDarkness3113 While that could've played a part, in Mother's case was the fact the series creator bailed out and the Japanese audience was dissatisifed with the last game. And for the Japanese THE appeal lies in the fact Shigesato Itoi the essayist was the one behind the games. The western audience's concerns on the matter are secondary here. So for all intents and purposes Mother is a closed series as far as Itoi cares, and most likely so does Nintendo. That's why I said "other reasons" instead of "shitty marketing".
Seeing how Nintendo betrayed Sony like that and essentially caused the creation of the PlayStation physically hurt to know. Could you imagine an alternate timeline where the Nintendo PlayStation is released?
@@Blueflag04 I think it would be easier to do a top 10 Namco list. Good examples include Soul Caliber 5 being rushed, Pac-man Adventures being canceled which would have had DON BLUTH involved🤦♂🤦♂🤦♂🤦♂, Jump Force being not good, Pac man getting an off looking redesign in Ghosty Adventures, and finally all those awful Digimon games.
"Take a good look, everyone! Unable to find a rival worthy of my genius, I was forced to create one by myself! Here I am! The tragic clown..." -Nintendo when they accidentally made the playstation also Luke Atmey but he's in prison, so we don't talk about him
This was actually a bit eye-opening for me. No company can last as long as Nintendo has and not mess up, but some of these I either didn't know about or had some misinformation/not the whole story. Nice.
The world laughed at Nintendo when they tried to screw over Sony. Thanks to TH-cam countdowns and game bloggers, we are reminded every so often to point and laugh at them once more. You honestly can’t make a bigger fail than bringing about your downfall by creating your own biggest competition. Seeing those ridiculous CD-i cutscenes reminded me that when Hotel Mario, Link: the Faces of Evil, and Zelda: the Wand of Gamelon were released, all three of them received praise FOR those crazy cutscenes. Reviewers genuinely liked them, and it took several years before people realized just how awful they are. That made me wonder: what other things in gaming have had their reception so reversed by time and experience? What are the most extreme examples? Might be another idea for a countdown someday.
I feel your pain man, I live in mexico and even though I'm at the border Nintendo games are rare and are at least 60% more expensive... I could not get a Wii, not only because it was hard to find but it was at the same price as a US PS3 back then. The only way to get some them is to have someone bring them to me directly from the US, which I give up at this point... Thank God for the Eshop.
In a way, you could see this as Frieza vs Goku. Nintendo being Frieza, who in his idiocy, creates that which rivaled him. The super saiyan Goku, which represents Sony.
Josh is actually a Nintendo fan but he is willing to tell the truth about them without being biased which I respect. I too like to criticize Nintendo for many of their faults but in the end still wish for their success because they have blessed my childhood and the gaming industry in whole
That's how Playstation was created? That's amazing XD This may have bitten Nintendo in the butt but it resulted in something pretty wonderful. So many of my favorite games might not have existed.
Just goes to show that even the most beloved names can make mistakes, no one is ever perfect because there's always room for improvement. Another great list Josh, I'm looking forward to seeing what other videos you will come up with.
Number 2 hits home. Project M is still in my opinion the best smash game. I helped grow that scene at my college and made a lot of friends through it. Seeing that dev team get torn apart by nintendo hurt me a lot.
Funny how the biggest Nintendo blunder lead to the creation of the greatest rival ever. Heck, that's where Final Fantasy went after ditching Nintendo consoles

And Sony is now flushing its reputation down the toilet from the PS3 to today...
Indeed. We'd be probably be facing a lot of monopolistic practices by Nintendo if it remained the only lead
And Microsoft only made the Xbox to ruin Sony's fun.
....I just realized that Joy-Con drift was not mentioned even once on this list. Weird.
I completely forgot about Nintendo's recent warranty concerns.
That's not good business practice, to be sure.
This list should've been a two-parter.
What they lack in impact, they make up for in pestilence.
The irony of it all, their biggest failure was a massive boon for video gaming overall. So even when they fail....they still win...
Well played Nintendo...well played. (Doesn't stop their blunders from happening)
A “Happy Accident” if you would
Nintendo’s biggest fail also created a victory for the gaming industry. It’s almost poetic...
Isn’t that the case throughout our history as a society though? That’s not really an accomplishment.
nintendo is great
but sometimes you just wanna play something else
Everything happens for a reason
Pretty ironic isn't it
Well, they're still mistakes, and really bad ones at that. It's not like Nintendo chose to create the biggest names in the gaming industry just cause they felt like it.
...or did they?
People see “gatekeeping” as a dirty word, but I think #10 on the list shows that some gates are worth keeping.
Agreed
I think it depends on what you're gatekeeping for and how. Like some DnD/Pathfinder players not wanting new players in their games because they dont want to explain "how to play" or rather have a team of min-maxing assholes.
When gatekeeping for quality, and not for political nonsense, absolutely.
gatekeeping as in keeping the shitty games from flooding into the industry? yeah they did decent in that regard, but even Hoover Dam couldnt hold back that much shit...
Like you said, it depends.

Mike Yokite well, it WAS Nintendo’s fault for practically creating their competition. As for Rare, Nintendo could have easily bought them beforehand. Probably.
Losing Final Fantasy to Sony, a lot of censorship in the 80's and 90's as well.
You sir are a prophet.
Sony described by the quotes of ultron
"What doesnt kill you.......MAKES YOU STRONGER"
Nintendo: "I'm gonna kill you."
PlayStation: "You idiot! You made me! You stabbed me in the back all those years ago. That wasn't easy for me to get over, and don't think that I didn't try!"
never thought i would see a Batman quote used so well, albeitly altered a little bit, regardless... Well Played.
SEGA: *(Pats Playstation on the back)* Don't worry. They're always like this.
And campy internet mashup parody spaghetti cooked by Phillips.
Funny how that works
I must admit. The way you talked about number 1 really felt deep. I never thought of it in that way, and despite being a fail, I guess we all win in the end with that one. Thanks for these amazing list about game company fails. They really brightened my day when the came out.

9 months after this video, Sephiroth says hi... so I guess we should add a 16th level of complexity to Cloud being in smash.
Nintendo was (and kinda still is) the Disney of the video games industry.
Both in the good and bad ways.

Outside of a yearly list, you could always do specific fails from a multitude of companies. Like, if they have common themes, put them in the slot. If they're outstanding in any way, put them in the slot. Nobody said it _had_ to be just one company at a a time.
So Nintendo litteraly caused Geno to be stuck with square.....how could you
Well, considering how just about everyone acts towards them, I'd say Nintendo not letting people get away with violating copyright laws and them not being willing to let Sony stab them in the back upon finding out the agreement they signed would have given Sony ownership of the Nintendo games that used the peripheral.
Anyway, things I think should be on here:
Shigeru Miyamoto's more recent decisions (the "suggestions" he gave for the 3DS Paper Mario, forcing Star Fox Zero to be made with the gameplay mechanic gimmicks it had, and not letting a new F-Zero game be made due to not being able to come up with a new gameplay gimmick for it)

But the Pokemon Company owns GameFreak and yet they're owned by Nintendo... so technically it does count.
This is exactly what I was talking about when I said "which, despite what many people think, isn't part of Nintendo." Nintendo did not shoot themselves in the foot with the Sony deal.
*Gasp, as I notice Lucas from The Wizard on the Thumbnail* Lucas! Darling...
Man, that was a great list.
The Phillips cdi games did spawn some of the most quotable memes around though, that’s probably the biggest joke about the consoles existence.
They made an achievement with it
Nintendo gave up on a deal with Sony for the Philips cd-i instead of negotiating with Sony Nintendo was a big company they could afford to do a little negotiating but this is Japan we're talkin about big Pride
you want to know the funny thing? Nintendo's biggest blunder could have been SEGA's swift revenge...if it wasn't for it's Japan branch
31:23 Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it
Nintendo’s biggest fail was indeed creating their rival the Sony PlayStation, but to be honest it felt like this NEEDED to happen.
Nothing really, Sony was going to enter regardless and planned to use Nintendo as a stepping stone
Proof that something good can come from something bad!
I read somewhere that a big reason we don't get a new F-Zero is because Nintendo can't think of anything new to do with it, to which I say, fantastic, don't, give us full grid online racing and most of us would be happy with that. The Wipeout series doesn't do much new and it sells great.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it. One would think that's common sense.
I'm calling it now Nintendo's less then stellar track record when it comes to fan projects will be on here.
Especially alvin earthworm
@@WhiteDarkness3113 Actually, Mark Haynes (Alvin Earthworm) is actually back on track with Super Mario Bros. Z reboot, he just reuploaded Episode 1 with minor tweaks to it on his channel as well as the complete original series as well.
OMG that ending! Now I am excited for January... hopefully we'll be able to roam free by then too!
EmicalFire055 January?
So it comes down to this. The one we all been waiting for. Though frankly I will always love Nintendo the most even with its problems.
Ditto 2
Ditto 3
Ditto 5. Why did we skip Ditto 4? Ask Mista.
Ditto 6. Despite all of their flaws, Nintendo is by far my favorite!
Ditto 6: The revengining
Hasn't even been a year and already you need to remake this list.
Free Melee.
twitter.com/SlimyQuagsire/status/1335354088968630274 yeah and then this happened. sound familiar *cough blizzard and hong kong cough*
32:04 Literally me after hearing of Nintendo leaving their collaboration with Sony for Phillips, right now!
Man, just seeing the Pokémon Uranium screen was depressing. I was really rooting for that one.
Still waiting for those postgame quests u.u
yes indeed, thankfully the game is still out there to enjoy, while not finished you can still see and take in all that was created.
and sadly with the death of Pokemon Essentials this leads to the end of many Pokemon Fan Games due to the engine being at their core.
After all the teases it's finally here.
For the niche franchises, I see them just playing it safe. Why waste millions on franchises with a niche audience when you can make another Mario game that guarantees millions?
It doesn't help some of those either started to sell less(F Zero) or had other reasons to stop altogether(Mother)
@@scissorman44 thanks for the info.
Back in the 90's and mid 2000's you can afford to take risks. Not so much now a days.
27:47 There's just something about that censor sound that makes me laugh.
That JelloApocalypse reference almost flew over my head, my guy.
Seeing how Nintendo betrayed Sony like that and essentially caused the creation of the PlayStation physically hurt to know.
Could you imagine an alternate timeline where the Nintendo PlayStation is released?
Well, brace yourselves, people. We're getting a yearly countdown of fails across all companies in the future!
So this is the final company fails list huh? I would've really hoped to see a Namco and Atari one. Bummer.
Same
36:07
We all know what Atari'Atari' s #1 would be. 1983
What about Rovio?
@@Blueflag04 I think it would be easier to do a top 10 Namco list. Good examples include Soul Caliber 5 being rushed, Pac-man Adventures being canceled which would have had DON BLUTH involved🤦♂🤦♂🤦♂🤦♂, Jump Force being not good, Pac man getting an off looking redesign in Ghosty Adventures, and finally all those awful Digimon games.
"Take a good look, everyone! Unable to find a rival worthy of my genius, I was forced to create one by myself! Here I am! The tragic clown..." -Nintendo when they accidentally made the playstation
also Luke Atmey but he's in prison, so we don't talk about him
This was actually a bit eye-opening for me. No company can last as long as Nintendo has and not mess up, but some of these I either didn't know about or had some misinformation/not the whole story. Nice.
I actually didn't know about quite a few of these. Wow.
Also, I forgot that was Josh's text alert, and was pleasantly surprised.
11 Months later, we get the Top Ten 2020 FAILS. Thank you GreenScorpion for that wonder idea you gave joscorcher.
Nintendo is the boomer of gaming companies. All their mistakes point to it.
They may not be perfect but I still love them. Pros outweigh the cons for them
Hey man, great work on the 1.5 segment! :) Just found your channel, and I'm dropping you a sub. I send you my greetings from across the Causeway! o/
Does "boomer" just mean nothing to you people?
In a way, you could see this as Frieza vs Goku. Nintendo being Frieza, who in his idiocy, creates that which rivaled him. The super saiyan Goku, which represents Sony.
*Nintendo:* We are the very best, like nobody ever was.
*Joshscorcher:* I'm about to end this companies whole image.
*Nintendo:* Oh ho, that is what you think.
*Joshscorcher:* (does research) Dangit! Even when Nintendo messes up they help the industry!
Proof that something good can come from something bad!
10:16
Doom already was on a Nintendo console. The original Doom was ported to the SNES and the N64 even had an exclusive version of Doom.
Just goes to show that even the most beloved names can make mistakes, no one is ever perfect because there's always room for improvement. Another great list Josh, I'm looking forward to seeing what other videos you will come up with.
Nintendo in 2021: HEY! YOU WANNA PAY $60 FOR AN EXPANSION OF A COMPLETELY FUCKED UP ONLINE SERVICE?!
36:23 and the Josh got an idea...an awful idea. That Josh got a wonderful, awful idea.
