I had an 02 M5 as a daily driver for three years. It was a stunning combination of LeMans Blue over Caramel extended leather. Purchased it with 69k miles in it and put 45k miles on in three years. It did everything, daily drives, long trips, autocross, and winter beater. Absolutely an engaging drive and an intoxicating soundtrack with the perfect blend of luxury and sport.
Being a young guy into autocross, I eventually turned to it's stablemate, the e36 M3. I love that even more as the inline 6 begs to be revved and it is still driveable in all situations. BMW was at the peak of their game in the 90s and early 00s.

i bought my E39 M5 5 years ago when i was 23 i felt in love with that car when i was playing Need For Speed High Stakes and Hot Pursuit 2 as a kid. Growing up with my dad owning an E30 325i and an E36 323i i had always the wish for going for a BMW. At the right time when i was in the position to buy one i pulled the trigger and got myself a 99` in Antrazit Grau. Luckily living in Germany i am able to have a blast with it on the Autobahn hitting top speed on unrestricted sections and i even took it on the Nürburgring Nordschleife. At that time it was my first BMW overkill for someone who has never driven a still high horsepower rwd car but it was always my childhood dream to own one and probably the only car i am never going to sell.

I got a 03 525i and 97 528i. I love em both. Just so comfy and easy, simple...and or course fun. The i6 ones aren't even too much trouble.

    • @stuntvist
      @stuntvist 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

The 6 cyl ones have better steering too because they got rack and pinion unlike the V8's. Plus they're super reliable, especially the 530d with the iron block M57, million miles easy if you take care of it. Plus we euros got the alu block M52, which you can just slap reground M54 cams, M54 crank, M57 rods, and a turbo on to make some cheap reliable 500hp. You could take it to the extremes and make over a 1000 on them, probably on the stock cranks if you don't go past 7500 RPM to do it, but if you balance it for higher RPM it'll glady do that too. Super capable and reliable stuff in the right hands.
Also the suspension is like anti-Ford for that era. Ford's then were super stiff and still had loads of body roll, E39's are super soft yet have almost no body roll in the same scenarios. Extremely comfortable while not becoming unpredictable when pushed. Very well engineered for something that's as big as a new 3 series and targeting roughly the same price class as a new 3 series.

I was working at the dealership when these were introduced. They would have me take out prospective customer and "show them what it will do." Having Carte Blanche like that was wonderful so the first thing I would do would be to turn off the traction control. Yeehaaa! As these cars aged there were a ton of issues with clutch and vanos problems so many were sold needing help instead of getting fixed. Plus, people ran the crap out of them. They have the usual E39 problems like busted plastic seat surrounds and pixelated dash displays plus I always preferred the ones without nav display as they don't look so dated now. I sold my last BMW (93 M5) last year after 31 years of having one in the driveway. Just don't care for the new offerings and BMW has made it very expensive to maintain a "classic." The E39 M5 is a great car if it's been maintained properly and now is old enough that most of the early problems have already been addressed at some point.

I put 90k miles on mine .. never had a clutch or vanos issue. The BMW dealer tried to warn me if there was a vanos problem it would be $10,000. My indy shop said you can have the vanos rebuilt for around $500 and they're easy to remove and reinstall. If you want to talk about BMW reliability issue, talk about the modern V8's that blow up when the rod bearings go.

This was BMW’s era of absolute perfection. The styling and handling haven’t been replicated since. You say “inspires confidence”, and that’s an understatement…
I had a 2001 325xi wagon, and it was so stable in turns at speed that I shredded sidewalls on Nokians (twice). If a curve sign said 35mph, I knew I could do almost 70.
No complicated infotainment, no flash, analog gauges, no touch screens, no iDrive, a bump shift that actually worked, direct analog steering, a responsive slant six, and timeless styling…
I should’ve never have sold it.

Prices for these cars have risen sharply in recent years, as they have for E46 M3. That said, ANY E39 is a good car. The M5 is a good, fast car.
But your 530i and 540i Sport in particular make a great, enjoyable daily driver, but without M-car running costs. Definitely worth a look if the M5 is no longer within budget.

But I'm glad to see him behind the wheels of one of these and ask the proper questions around price & purpose this car provides in the life of the owner.
Not everyone would go to a track or have intentions of stripping their cars naked for AutoCross days, so a lot of times those TH-cam car channels that strictly rate a car simply by how well it'll be useful mainly on a track and not for the rest of the time it'll be used on the road in the real world, actually lose their audience to a wide margin.

FINALLY, SOME ONE 'GETS' IT. THE MORE PEOPLE MAKE VIDEOS ON THE CAR, THE HIGHER PRICES ARE GONNA GO UP. The THING is, people have BEEN doing this with the E30, look now. Now people are starting to do it with the E39 M5, and NOT JUST the M5, but with ALL E39s.
Now, I know I shouldn't be saying this but it's TRUE, If you cannot afford an M5 that much, people would FLOCK to the 540i M sport, and covert it to manual too. Or look for a manual one. Because it's the 'near' M5. Even a channel called Prepetunal Radio Networks made a video with the EXACT same name, and its been up for some time, blame him for making prices go up on those too. See, that's what people do, look for alternatives. Are you trying to buy an M5? And how long for?

I am Lucky enough to own one of these, a '99 model in Carbon Black. To me, even though is is now 21 years old, it remains a timeless classic, and still as beautiful today as the day she was born. It also astonishes me that BMW were able to make a beast like this all those years ago, and in my opinion, have advanced very little over that time. Some may even say they have succeeded in going backwards..

If I could have a brand new version any car released in my lifetime(49y/o), It would be an E39 BMW M5. I wouldn’t even have to think twice. It’s as perfect of a car one will ever find. It’s right at the tail end of great mechanical tech just before it got bogged down with electronic/computer tech for the most part. An absolutely gorgeous design without feeling it’s unnecessarily ostentatious.
Perfect for a road trip. Perfect for track. Basically looks like an ordinary four-door sedan. But you can stomp the vast majority of cars which would pull up next to you at a light. Just absolute perfection.

I must admit: I'm a huge fan of electric power trains. (Especially now that battery technology is coming up to speed).
But there are a few cars with internal combustion engines that absolutely have a special place in my heart and this is one of them. I still remember (and sometimes watch) those Alex Roy videos where the engine sounds are so gorgeously interwoven throughout the heat and excitement of e.g. the Gumball rally.
As Magnus describes: this car is a perfect balance of basically that "real power is silent" idea that I love. For this car it's in it's appearance. For a Tesla it's its silent engine.
And I love a form/function/minimalistic balance and this car just nails it. To me, more buttons is not necessarily a sign of luxury but beyond a certain point it becomes a turn-off.
This car nails the look, the sound, the form/function balance, powerful.. but long distance cruiser at the same time.
If I ever had to own a non-EV, it'd love it to be this car (Or an Aston Martin DB9... yeah.. expensive taste lol)>
Huge compliments for this excellent video!

No rust, good interior and exterior, and runs great with 160k miles. Love to drive this car. Also bought a 16' 740i in 2022. This video is a nice tribute to the e39. Awesome video on what probably is my favorite car. I was just a kid when this car went out of production, but my love for it was cemented when I first drove a base spec 525i E39. The E39's looks, driving experience, and feeling of solidity haven't been matched in my opinion. For me, the sweet spot is a 530i with the sport package and a manual. It has the sweet rack and pinion steering, and the car is just perfect in my mind.

Well, Sabine said the e34 ring taxi drove more like a racecar than the others
Of course the e39 has more power , torque, is more comfortable, or bmw would not have released it as an evolution of the previous model
The feel of the car is a lot different. E34 is lighter, smaller, has to rev more, is better on twisties, fun at lower speeds. E39 bigger, heavier, more torque at lower revs, a train, and better on the open road, more fun at higher speeds.
Both good, but twisties are e34/e30 territory
