Hello Harrison, I'm a long time collector of American Flyer HO the Hudson loco you have there is a 31005 made from 1958-1963 The AC Gilbert Company stoped making HO in 1963 and went out of business in 1967 Your engine looks complete and you should have no problem getting it running, it has smoke & Choo Choo sound, if you need any help or parts for this engine let me know I do have parts and exploded view sheets for all parts list good luck with it Thanks
These are fantastic locomotives! I just bought mine from a garage sale the day before SMT Mainline did his video. Mine is the 443 3 digit version, which I thought was actually made in 1955/56. I will be doing a review of mine on my brand new channel coming up as soon as I can get the editing done!
Nate's Trains Franklin Mint released a green one called Crescent limited or something. It’s the only pretty version of this model imo it’s very crude and wonky
Wow, nice locomotive SMT! I've heard of American Flyer HO locomotives, but this is my first time seeing one, very interesting piece! Gonna enjoy the journey this things going to go on to get back in running shape!
There's a possibility that ''Gilbert'' 'HO' locomotive was either made by Mantua/tyco or Varney (later to become Life-Like now Walthers) to their specifications.
I think I have the cars for that locomotive! It belonged to my dad and dates back to the 1950's. He sold the locomotive back in 1957 because it never ran right and bought a Revell F7 that I still have.
When you take it apart, look in the top of the shell and it should be stamped with the month and year it was made if someone has not tried to clean it and wiped it off.
nice! That's a beauty, eh? Looks in good condition and I suspect the worm gear is gunked up with old grease as well as some adjustments needed to the quartering of the wheels. Oiling up the axles wouldn't be a bad idea also. Probably a rather quick fix.
I think they there might have been another manufacturer that did that too. I think Mehano still is but I doubt they're similar to their 1950s counterparts.
DBTech Gilbert started withH.O.shortly before WW2.manufacture of this loco continued post war until the early sixties shortly before Gilbert ceased train production. This little loco in the early years sold for $25.00,a bargain at the time and on many early H.O. Model railroads was present and helped many modelers get there start. It was a very reliable runner.Over the years Gilbert made a few changes a subject for discussion some other time.
I got a really old S scale American flyer from 1951, still trying to fix it and I cant wait to see it work. Wish you the best of luck fixing this one. From the looks of it I would say it's from the mid 60s to 70s
Old model raildoad engines: My motor is dirty and lacks power, my wheels make bad contacts, gearings are full of old solidified grease, the wiring is desoldering and shorting, this seems the end of my days... After a few hours with SMT: Why I'm smoothly rolling on the track like in the old days???????
Harrison, Google has a site Gilbert HO index with history and pictures of all AF Gilbert HO engines, cars, and accessories. This should help with the history of this engine,
As i was uploaded something i seen the video come up i wanted to see this . thats one thing ive learned from everyone that American flyer made Ho scale which i didnt know at all. My uncle has original American flyers tbat him and my late uncle had they are S scale but anyway thats awesome plus man that is in beautiful shape. I wonder if it has the realistic Chuffing sound . yes i went all James may there lol
Hi, I am viewer from the United Kingdom just starting out with HO scale model trains so still on the learning curve. With regards to model train makers which are the best and the ones to avoid. I keep reading that Bachmann is poor but in the UK it is seen has a good make though more expensive than Hornby. I have seen an Bachmann Spectrum ' Dogglebug' train is it worth buying ? Thanks in advance.
You’re going to be backlogged now for awhile. You’re getting broken locos faster than you’re repairing them. It’s like the court system. “I’ll fix this by.... next April. My people will call your people.”
@Kontroller Packers well loooking at the video some more i did not see the 5 digit number on the cab a my apologies you are right it is from the 50s i have one but it is from the 40s
@Kontroller Packers i was right i found a 1960s catalog that has that same engine in it its not from the 50s the catalog is on line if you want to look at it to
I have this same locomotive! Unfortunately it's in pieces because I have to redo all the wiring, fix the motor, fix the chuffing mechanism, and fix the headlight. Edit: I've been working on it and I almost have it fixed. Edit 2: Actually I figured out that I have a 1948 smoke in tender hudson.

Nice looking locomotive. I have my grandpa’s s gauge American Flyer set from 1947.
All my old stuff which was all made from 1938 to 1962 has had no major problems so old trains are practically indestructible
very nice indeed, even better if you get it running
This is interesting! My uncle has an old American Flyer set too, but I never knew they made HO scale too!
Yay! More unboxing.
I have the same model however it’s stamped “Franklin mint”. The model has been produced under numerous different names.
Franklin Mint made collectable scale models of mostly cars, so they probably rebranded it.
Nate's Trains Franklin Mint released a green one called Crescent limited or something. It’s the only pretty version of this model imo it’s very crude and wonky

I am excited to seee what you can do with this Flyer loco! I think this one has a tender-puffer, should make an excellent video!
Sweet old A/F! Should be an easy fix!
It’s gotta feel like Christmas multiple time a month at your place up north of the border.

I suspect you're right. I just hope no one burned out the motor trying to force it to run.
seems like you get a lot of free stuff in the mail
I can’t wait to see SMT repair it
I think Gilbert made chemistry sets in the 1950's if its the same company as the locomotive.
I think they there might have been another manufacturer that did that too. I think Mehano still is but I doubt they're similar to their 1950s counterparts.
Gilbert also made S Gauge trains and accessories. Also made the famous Erector Sets and chemistry sets.
This was a great unboxing Smt! Cheers from Chicago
Vintage locomotives are so charming. I just love the style of them.
I have one with the whistle in the tender. It take a special switch to activate it. Still trying to find that one.
I don't think Gilbert made HO scale for very long. That is kind of rare and will run great.

@@robertnielsen2461 Thanks for the information. I have a 1961, 31036 locomotive. Runs great.

Still like that iconic introduction!
My bachmann thunder chief locomotive will still slowly run even when the dial is at zero. Not asking for a restoration but I just need tips.
i have a headlight version thats sadly missing its trailing wheels
Inside the box SMT is a portal to another universe, that leads to the world or model trains
Hey do you do restorations because i got a Milwaukee road train engine for 10 bucks but it needs a good restoration. Can you do it???
I don't know why but I'm starting to get interesting in American flyer. There is something about them that I like.
Hey buddy I have a few models, they are very reliable but when the motor goes down they can be a real pain
Do u have American flyer track and controler?

Guys theres not 14 firsts
First
Thatguyontheinternet bruh
Second
Man if it had a front coupler you could have double headed it with the blue goose
If SMT believes is could be a runner...I'm confident in his "Picard-like" capabilities to "make it so"...
Early 50s af Hudson nice they pull really well with all that weight
American flyer...AMERICAN FLYER HO

Most American flyer engines are warm driven. Can't free spin the wheels
