Hello Jack. My name is Howard Pelcman. From the early 80s to 2005 I did lettering and graphics in NJ. Your video stopped me in my tracks. Nice work. I signed my work as Howard did it. Long ago and far away. Glad you are keeping it alive. Thanks.
Wow that looks great. I like how you practiced 'repetition of a theme' with the truck badging. 3M used to make a fineline transparent green tape that came in a wide version you could remove 1/16" sections of to yield perfectly parallel lines. In your case you would have removed most of the tape. I've had mixed success using it to spray on pinstripes without bleeding. Back in the day I used to watch a guy here on the West Coast named Shakey Jake pinstripe show cars. Thanks for evoking that memory.😅
Filling in the closed part of the letters really made it look better. An airbrushed shadow from the top card would looked good also, just my thought. Great job though!
I use to do this when i was a teenager in the late 80's. I learned from an old timer who also used one shot. I just never thought it would stay in fashion because of vinyl graphics. Nice job. Good to see it's still alive !
@frankartale1026 I work mostly within the classic truck scene. I do a lot of truck doors. They are mostly on older trucks though. I do paint signage on some newer work trucks and vans. Those are usually for people who have had bad experiences with vinyl cracking or discolored over time. Definitely not as much work as in the vinyl world, but not as much competition either.
Fantastic work mate, I worked in a paint shop back when sign writing was still done with a brush and was always amazed by the skill of guys like yourself who would match the sign writing and pin striping on a commercial vehicle that we repaired, just awesome.
@johncitizen3361 thanks. I am pretty young comparatively. Always blown away by the folks that got to do this back.whennit was way more common. Feel blessed to get to pay the bills this way though.

Great work! I was taught as a billboard painter many similar techniques for painting billboards; well, the guys who taught me were sign painters who did lots of work like this. The only difference is that I was left handed. It’s nice to see the ‘old school’ approach to getting graphics on the doors of the truck; as so many modern applications are now vinyls cut on machine. Excellent job!👍🏻🫡
Did you know the oldschool typesetters used a measurement called Picas. There is a ruler that has inches up top and picas on the bottom. I hate drawing letters. But using a letter script brush definitely feels better.
Hi Jack! Great video! Sorry If I missed it. What kind of paint do you use? Do you prime the surface? And with what? How do you finish it and with what to be weather proof? Thank you so much! Your work is beautiful 🤩
@jacitaylor4717 most of the time I use 1 shot lettering enamel. If applied correctly, no real need to clear coat. No priming. Surface needs to be very clean and free from wax
Whats the cost of two doors hand lettered now of days? Back in the early 80's we were getting 60-80 bucks a door..no vinyl. But one shot was one stroke & it covered. You didn't have to double coat it. 1 shot changed its formula somewhere around 90s? And all the pigment was suspended, not settled on the bottom. I switched to basecoat with hardener, because 1 shot became 2 coats & twice the work, twice the labor cost. & vinyl was dirt cheap. Killed us!
@Broody58 I can't speak for other folks, but I usually run between $200 and $300 a door, where I am at. Sometimes more. I am sure things are all over the board on pricing with folks.
