  • In this video, I'm going to compare and review Harley's iconic Sportster 48 Bobber and the Triumph Bonneville Bobber Black. Both bikes are in a similar price range and would appeal to similar buyers. Let's see which one you think is best for you.

Bobber without a doubt. Triumph has a nice classy look with extremely cool styling.

Indeed. Only thing I do not like about it is the modern, water cooled rev happy short strone engine. It doesn't have the same feel (and sound) as an air cooled long stroke engine that provides a lot of torque down low and doesn't have to be revved up high to make things happen.
I get it, the type of engine Triumph has is more efficient, more power, more modern... But if we are about to drive a Bobber then efficient and modern is probably the last thing we are interested about. 😁

Bobber 100%. I rode both as well on the same day, along the Low Rider S. Liked the Harley’s, but loved the Triumph Bobber. I ended up with the Triumph Speedmaster (Goldline LE) which is the same frame as the Bobber, but has the pillion making it more of a cruiser, which is how I’m setting it up - best of both worlds as I can strip it back down to Bobber style. The Harley feels much rougher than the Triumph, less comfortable, and as you said, not as refined. Some may prefer that. I prefer refined to raw, especially at that price. I love the sound of the Bobber’s engine and exhaust. But, it’s all preference.

Both are good bikes, although I ended up going with the Triumph Bobber Black because it’s just better all-around....but the tiny tank is a pain in the butt, I like doing all-day rides and I end up fueling up 2-3 times a ride 😖, but I still love it love it 😍

  • @e4cpltom
    @e4cpltom 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

Just FYI, the word "bobber" comes from the word "bob" in the English language (since fallen out of popularity) that was VERB. It meant "too cut". That is why " bobbers" and "choppers" used to look so much alike. And for those who don't believe me, look at the bobcat.

I considered both these bikes when i was last in the market. I thought the 2013 48 with that gold tank and the almost holographic big lettering was drop-dead gorgeous, i was seriously considering getting a used one. But then, so is the Triumph (the Standard more so over the black IMO.) The 48 it seems was designed for style and attitude first, as many Harleys are, and handling, performance and comfort down the list. Even the undersquare engines of Harleys are a compromise to tradition over performance. The Triumph on the other hand seems to have been designed to take into account all attributes, everything possible from this style of bike, from the seating position to the comfort of the seat itself to the handling to the weight to the more inherently powerful oversquare engine that kicks ass everywhere through its range. I think you can make too much of it being "a bobber" in the Triumph case, it's just a superbly executed motorcycle. I take mine on long runs of hundreds of miles comfortably. Yes, you have to stop to fuel up more frequently than a tourer, but i'm not sure what people have an issue with there. Also remembering that people used to tour on whatever they had motorcycle-wise, people crossed the continents on early Bonnevilles. They didn't feel they needed a bike for every different purpose, which is just as well, as there were more restrictions to taking on household debt then, too. Anyways, if you want an all-round incredible machine, get the Triumph. If you are "a Harley guy" get the Harley. That would be my advice having considered and compared both.

Thanks for the great comparison video! Definitely a matter of personal taste, but I prefer the Triumph. I used to ride an '06 Sportster, and it was fun but it felt just a bit underpowered at the top end and the brakes were terrible. Now I ride a '20 Triumph Bonneville T-120 (the "standard" Bonneville, not the Bobber) and I couldn't imagine ever going back to a Sportster. Like my T-120, the Bobber is liquid cooled, has ride-by-wire electronic throttle, mid-controls, Brembo twin discs up front, six-speed transmission, and ABS and traction control. If you like the look of the Bobber but want to ride two-up, check out the Speedmaster, which is based on the Bobber but with forward controls and a pillion seat.

In the market for used bikes in good shape, the Bobber will cost several thousand more than the Sportster all else (mileage and condition) being equal. It is a stronger bike and definitely looks cool, and the mid pegs would be a big plus for me. However- it is complex, the shifter clunks every gear, it's liquid cooled, strangulated by the EPA, the new ones have welded up exhaust systems making mods harder, they throttle by wire, and around here the nearest dealer is 60 miles away.
Harleys are common and the dealers are close by, aftermarket support is great and the Sportsters are still relatively simple.
For a few hundred bucks 80 HP can be coaxed out of a 1200, sooo.... I'd take the Sportster. The Bobbers are cool, though and I wouldn't mind having one.

I have 2014 fat boy which is my main bike I use it for shows and club meets etc but last year I picked up new 48 just mainly for poppin around town or a 50 mile round trip to the coast I do on the odd 350 mile day trip that takes in sightseeing and meals. Its great to ride but the end of a 12 hour day its very tiring the next day I pay for it with stiff joints and numerous aching muscles...but it was a great day out....

I believe there's a warning in the 48's owners manual that says, WARNING! ''Riding more than 50 miles in a row on this bike can cause serious muscle pain''. So there's that...

I buy a bike for the engine. I usually do not MOD the engine as I buy the bike with the horsepower and torque from the factory. If it’s a commute bike, weight is my next criteria, less the better. Then the above 2 criteria are mixed in aesthetics of the bike. Majority premium bikes have good brakes and suspension from the factory. Most bikes built nowadays are very reliable.. Both motorcycles look great. If you like torque go with the Harley. If you like a more rev happy engine go with the Triumph. Liquid cooled motors do run Cooler in hot weather areas, IMO. Thanks for the great unbiased review

The problem with Harley is, your local cos-play centre (dealership) might not be there in two years. Harleys CEO has stated many times “Harley is a luxury brand” lol. Paint and decals don’t make a luxury brand. Especially when the blue collar class built the brand. Harley has failed at everything but their baggers which are now only available to the top 17% of buyers.

with that small tooth rear spocket the Triumph bobber will be fine for distance on a long highway ride. Too bad Harley did not keep the sportser and did what Triumphdid to the 120... barely can tell it is liquid cooled. Love both of these machines. I am thinking of adding a 3rd bike to my stable, never thought I would want a British bike after wrenching on my older BSA. I may PURCHASE that Bobber and put her with my 2018 Kawasaki Zed 900 & 2023 Harley Soft Tail. Thanks for sharing this.

Took me sideways once completely and threw me like a wild stallion lol! Luckily I was wearing a full face helmet and gloves, only suffered a sprained thumb. The Triumph can be jerky at low speeds cos the computer has it running lean down there is all. If it drives you nuts, a $150 "booster plug" - a cinch to install - fixes that, tricks the computer to run just a bit more rich at lowest speeds. Or easier and no added cost, switch to "rain mode" for town. Has a similar effect. As for storage, i wear a modest size rucksack when i need to pack some gear. Don't even notice it.

It just seem most complete and becoming to nature of the invention the motor bike to me. Although these other designs do in fact create their own kind of energies sensed with results totally different to the vertical to me it is only diversity expressed.
