Hayao Miyazaki's first feature film in 10 years, The Boy and the Heron is a hand-drawn, original story written and directed by the Academy Award®-winning director. Produced by Studio Ghibli co-founder Toshio Suzuki, the film features a musical score from Miyazaki's long-time collaborator Joe Hisaishi. The theme song for the film "Spinning Globe" was penned and performed by global J-pop superstar Kenshi Yonezu.

Imo, this movie is the deepest Miyazaki movie. On the surface, it's a mix of Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke. but to me, it's a love letter from Miyazaki to us. He's telling us to create beautiful worlds untainted by malice. That block that Mahito kept at the end is a symbol of the movie itself, a powerful reminder that we have the power to create something beautiful.
My top three Ghibli films are Princess Mononoke, Howl's Moving Castle and The Wind Rises
There are 13 building blocks, but that is the number of movies Miyazaki has produced. If you watch the film again with this in mind, your impression will change.
Of the Studio Ghibli movies I've seen so far, here's my ranking:
1. Princess Mononoke (by a landslide my favorite)
2. Howl's Moving Castle
3. Spirited Away
4. Kiki's Delivery Service

5. The Boy and the Heron...I really wanted to like it more. I gave it 2.5 stars. Miyazaki delivers on the animation as always, but to me this was a weirder, more meandering, and less interesting version of Spirited Away.

@@jaredliebergen1179 have you looked at it deeper? on a surface level, it might look like diet spirited away. but if you look deeper, it's Miyazaki's way of telling us and the future generation that we have the power to create something beautiful
Get ready to be blown away. This movie is a Masterpiece. The music, the story, the characters are unforgettable. If you’re a fan of Miyazaki you’re going to like this one.

I watched this AMAZING film yesterday, and it became my ultimate favourite Ghibli movie, because of its messages. 🙏🥰I feel proud to be Japanese☺️

I don’t think the film needs to necessarily be longer; I think they should’ve just shifted some runtime from other areas to the end so it wasn’t so abrupt. For example, did we really need the scene of kuriko trying to make a cigarette deal with mahito?

Fell asleep, my partner loved past ghibli films and she thought it was the worst one
Animation was good...plot was dull and massive drag
I was not a big fan of this one, and I love their films. The animation was great but the story was confusing, all over the place without explaining anything, and honest just seemed like a bunch of nonsense that dragged on and on and never really got anywhere. And most of the people that i heard in the theater sitting behind me all had the same reaction. My friends and I honestly wanted to like it but it just wasn't as good story wise as his previously works.

How
