  • The Boy And The Heron just recently came out in US Theaters, meaning I've finally been able to watch it. So, how does it live up compared to other Miyazaki and Ghibli works? Is it a masterpiece?

Perhaps the tower's collapse is a representation of what Miyazaki fears will happen to Studio Ghibli when he's gone.

I have mixed thoughts about The Boy and the Heron. The animation is stunning, and the ambient music gives a Breath of the Wild/Tears of the Kingdom feel. But the story falls apart in the second half for me. I love the quiet moments and the slowly building tension between Mahito and the heron in the first half. And then his initial journey to the alternate world is great culminating in the beautiful scene with the Warawara and then the dying pelican. But things derail for me afterwards. The parakeets feel out of place with the otherwise serious tone of the movie, and I feel that the Parakeet king, Mahito's granduncle, and the blocks don't get enough screen time so the truth of the alternate world feels so abrupt when it starts to collapse after the blocks haven't been stacked to maintain balance. It's a gorgeous movie but a messy one.

I watched it on the 7 because it showed a bit early in my city, and I was waiting for someone to post a video talking about it because I can’t even collect my thoughts yet. You definitely were able to help me figure out a lot of my thoughts about the film!! It definitely is one of if not my favourite Miyazaki film now!

So touching, Miyazaki is the most artistic animator. His style of storytelling is unmatched. I only watched his great works in my teenage years which I think was the best time as it brought me to respects on matters such as morality and purpose the list honestly goes on. I will forever watch his movies again and again as there is so much nuance and dimension. Miyazaki is indeed his own school of thought, his work could make such great research into the psychological assessment of our own being and reflection. As we as a people progress, as a complex networking society but above all in our individual lives. His work is beyond compression. So much value and contrast maybe this is just the art student in me talking... My point is not enough fame and noise is given to his name or just Japanese or eastern animation. Love his work nothing like it and sadly their might never be after he is gone.
(by the way I actually am a Fine arts student)

Imo, this movie is the deepest Miyazaki movie. On the surface, it's a mix of Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke. but to me, it's a love letter from Miyazaki to us. He's telling us to create beautiful worlds untainted by malice. That block that Mahito kept at the end is a symbol of the movie itself, a powerful reminder that we have the power to create something beautiful.

The Boy and the Heron is hands down my favorite now. I didn't get to watch The Wind Rises until after I watched the Boy and the Heron and I think it's great, but my personal favorite was always Castle in the Sky. I'm not sure if it's the pacing or the classic romantic tone it takes of good versus obvious evil, making me fairly basic in that sense. With that said, right now in my life, I am going through immense personal mental/emotional growth and the Boy and the Heron speaks to me deeper than anything else has, from views on personal responsibility, individuality, the value of working hard, and more. I even bought the book, How Do You Live, which expanded my mind even more. I have gained a lot from this film and I can't wait for it to be available to stream or own so I can indulge in and digest it more...but of course at the end, I need to take the message of the movie to heart, and just move forward to the future and face the uncertainty of our malice and the chaos of our world.

I agree with you so much. Castle in the Sky is probably still my favorite, but Boy and the Heron I think is second for me. There's just so much to unpack that felt relevant to my own life, and it felt like I could understand Miyazaki on a personal level for a brief moment. I can't lie, I cried in the theater.

I resonate with the author's creation of this movie even without watching it, yet. My favorite is Toroto. I pray he creates a new one of those.

My favorite Ghibli film is "Castle in the Sky". I wanted to like the film more but the beginning was slow, they should've tightened things up there and saved more room for the ending to breathe. Still unsure of where I'd rank it but I thought it was okay.

meticulous. the layers upon layers of metaphor, symbolism, and creative story telling are unparalleled. IMO this is what makes "The Boy and The Heron" Miyazakis greatest achievement. the second watch better then the first and I have to assume the third will be even better... It may not be everyone's favorite but its hard to argue it not being the best.
