Wow fellas, love the cover!!! Sounds really natural but you can also hear the microtonal shifts, too. Fabio Costa's "Aphoristic Madrigal" uses that Shrinking Dominant scale you mention Edit: I transcribed the cover on my channel! :)
I absolutely love these videos! Super helpful for those trying to get into microtonality. If I may make a suggestion, I would loooove to see a sort of 'Beginners Guide to using Just Intonation', I can never seem to be able to use it right.
Thanks a lot! Hahaha, we'd also love a guide like that :D What are you struggling with? Knowing that would help a lot in the writing process. We briefly mentioned how to spiral higher or lower using JI in our video about pivot modulations, maybe that can already help?
I'm glad to hear that, I would love to help! Mostly I'm struggling with how to tune chords in JI using the intervals. Sometimes I see people do it from the Root-up or from the Melody-down. It's more about how the process for tuning works that I'm confused about. I hope that helps, thanks! :)
@@GavLikesOpera Totally, that's the trickiest part - but also the most fun, because you can fool the listener into almost anything with JI. We'll make a video on it, but we've got the next 7 or so already planned, so it might take some time... Btw: you can use all our tricks with pivot notes and CM in JI, too.
Yes! I have always thought that of all 12edo composers who could be "covered" in an interesting microtonal version, Stevie Wonder would be an excellent candidate. I love what you guys did.
I think these new scales lend themselves better to Sonic-Youth/Glenn Branca style things, as they can produce better harmonic series for guitar-stacks, and they can produce beating notes better than Branca's technique of tuning guitars slightly flat/sharp.
Played this on violin. One needs to shift to a third position occasionally to scale properly. I have noticed that is often true in certain keys in regular 12 EDO.
It's made by the amazing Thomas Thämlitz, a luthier from northern Germany, he made all my guitars and is currently even building me a Cello da Spalla. Hit him up if you want a guitar like that: holzblut.de !
Yes, very much, the video guy had some unforeseen time-related hiccups, so Rami will do the rest of the video in the coming month! We're looking forward as much as you seem to! :D
Well, it's our current favourite, because it offers so much, while still being somewhat playable, but we like to experiment with 53 and 72, too, for example :) 41 is cool, too
@@HearBetweenTheLines I really like how Dolores Catherino's MicroZone keyboard has enough rows of keys for 72 EDO, and I keep hoping that LumaTone will eventually make a model with at least that many rows.
Well, it also has the 13th (d 13), 7th (db7) *and* 15th harmonic (maj7), right? So I guess you *could* call it a mixolydian - shat11 - flarp 13 - natural 14 - scale but we think that's a little much, haha
Yes, you could become our patron! From the 2nd tier onwards you get access to tidbits like instrumentals :) The instrumental for Overjoyed is already there!
Maybe I'm too used to the "normal" western tuning, but for me the microtonal approach sounds simply bad and unnatural. Nevertheless it's an interesting experiment :-)
That's okay! Thanks for tuning in anyways and maybe check back with us in a while :) Sometimes our tastebuds need to acclimatise to new inputs. That's definitely how it was for us.
brutally underrated channel.
Silky smooth. Excellently done guys!
Yes! Our first Sevish comment, we're famous :D

You the goat transcriber, Stephen, soooo cool!
I'm trying so hard to hate social media, but then stuff like this comes up... Fabulous
this intro dude wtf, crazy. immediately gave me the jacob collier vibe
Real nice, so much creative potential for Stevie's music to become microtonal
Absolutely! We'd love to hear *you* harmonise a song of his! :D

"Wake up, honey! There's a new Hear Between The Lines video!"
Hilarious and clever. Excellent! "We go into the advance tuning options, because that is what we do here on this channel".
Exactly hahaha
Awesome stuff. It was inevitable that people start diving into microtonal harmony. You, guys, are helping it become mainstream!
Thanks for the kind words, Rene :)

Found you guys a month ago, binged all your videos, and now this is the first new video I get to watch! So excited
7:13 that was insane
Thanks!
I love hearing about your microtonal strategies, and the result is so cool!
I've played this song on the piano for several decades--I've always considered it pure genius. Stevie had a real gift for interesting compositions--
Where did you get that guitar? it's awesome
Too High could be very worthwhile too
Ooooh yess, that intro would be killer! But the whole song would be very interesting to check out! :D

Ooooh, it’d be so cool if you were to play this in 31 to this track and posted it and tagged us!
Do you have a playlist of your background music? I love the microtonal jazz background music
Fantastic video!
Glad you liked it!
Love how in-depth you go in this, really cool stuff and great idea for a channel!
Brilliant stuff! Let me check this: All this time my guitars and singing were NOT out of tune? I was just using some ~50 note scale???
Very cool. Can't wait to hear the full song.
yooooo where did you get the fretboard exchangable guitar??
What is that guitar and how do I get one that's amazing!
It's my awesome luthier Thomas, if you want a guitar write to him on his website www.holzblut.de and tell him you're coming from our channel!
what is that guitar??? thats the exact solution ive been looking for as a guitarist to experiment more with different tuning systems!

Yes :)
This video is more Jacob Collier THAN Jacob Collier 🔥🔥🔥
So awesome!!! Kudos!
You are awesome! ;) Cheers!
I WANT A FULL VERSION!
one second later you said you will upload the full song soon haha oops
Awesome as ever guys!
The full version better have the full lumatone solo..
It does, hahaha :D

Guys in terms of musicality which would you say is the optimal subdivision of the octave. Is it 31?

the 'shrinking dominant scale' is bit of a lydian with that 11th harmonic, right?

We're not sure how to answer that question, but.... Yes!
You should release just the backing track
Only if you will sing/play over it and post it ;)
