Honey in coffee is ok, if you like it. But! :) Try it with tea. Just a neutrally tasting one, like black tea. Option 1: Honey to taste, done. Option 2: Honey to taste, and cut in a thin slice of lemon - don't squeeze, just drop it in. Option 3: Same as 2, but add a teaspoon (or two LOL) of your favorite liquor. Awesome winter cup of tea (or cold summer afternoon). Havana dark rum works nice. Cheers! :)
I use honey in my tea but never have coffee. It just isn’t something that seems to go together in my opinion. Bees wax earplugs would be a good idea. I’ve heard they’re much more comfortable than the foam or plastic types in the stores.
I don't mind honey in my coffee if I feel like I want it sweet, but I usually just take my coffee black or with cream & maybe some cinnamon and/or cayenne pepper. Thanks for a great video. That's really helpful, to see how the honey extraction process works!
@@SageandStoneHomestead The cayenne is supposed to improve circulation, plus I like the taste in my coffee. It's only cayenne & habanero; peppers like jalapeño are a different family, I guess. It does appear to work.
I get a lot of my stuff locally at a place called The Bee Barn, but I also shop online at Lappees and BetterBee. I think they are both in NY. The plastic frames are my favorite. They are really easy to manage and the bees take to them well! They are triple waxed.
Great harvest! Good demonstration of the refractometer, but considering that the vast majority of the honey was capped I wouldn't have been shy about including the frame that was largely uncapped. As a rule of thumb I want to see at least 3/4 of the cells capped so your one frame would have been a tiny portion overall. But "when in doubt, leave it out" and feeding it back to the bees is a good option, too. As for honey in coffee, I'm typically a black coffee drinker but after my 1st bout of C19 I couldn't take the flavor. I'd just take a spoonful of honey and stir it in to add some sweetness - crystallized honey was great for this. Strangely, my 2nd round of C19 seemed to reset my taste buds and I'm back to black coffee now. 🤷♂
My smell was messed up for 18 MONTHS after we got it. If it was supposed to smell bad it smelled like garlic scrambled eggs. It was so confusing and I still haven't had garlic scrambled eggs since LOL I was definitely worried about ruining the whole batch so the bees get that one! It makes sense that the one 21% frame would probably not take the whole rest of the other 26 frames above 19. Some of the honey I tested was at 17.5%!!
Do you love having bee's?? We are going to try to catch a swarm this year. We tested to see if there might be bee's last year. And it seems we do. So we going to set up for catching one this year. We will see. I'm glad you are putting up the swarm playlist. I need all the help I can get.

I really want to have bees 🐝 but not only is my yard small my husband’s not too enthusiastic 😅 so for now I will just support the locals. Several of the people that keep bees in my area have said that they don’t have any left. What time of year do you typically do this process? And is it only once a year. I’m wondering so that I can start looking for local honey at the right time. Maybe I’ll get lucky.
We have kept bees 2 years and both years we didn't get around to processing honey until January!! Usually it's a late summer or fall project for many. ♡
Have you use bees wax polish for your furniture its used on natural wood to water proof and protect wood furniture maybe TH-cam how to make bees wax polish
I'm not one for polishing furniture, but that's definitely a great use for the wax! We tend to use it for body products though we have used the wax to polish deer antler and bone jewelry.
This does depend, usually condensed down to one box is fine, they will backfill the brood nest as it shrinks down and have about 10 frames to eat from during our mild winters. I have left the brood nest plus a medium super on the top and they didn't eat into the super come spring.
@@SageandStoneHomestead yes! I use in bread recipes and I love me some pb and honey sandwiches! I no longer do carbs though.... I miss them but honestly it's easy and I feel much better. I will have one again I'm sure 🤣. Sooooo good! Oh and I use honey in tinctures! It's great! I made fermented garlic honey too! I think it's almost a year now. It will go down real smooth!
What a palaver. I've just harvested 7 flow frames (from 3 hives) it took about 2 hours to get 3kg per frame straight into the jars (it was 29 C at the time). To compare and extrapolating to 26 frames - ( translating to archaic measurements :) ). that is 78 kg = 172 pounds. My washing up was 3 little tubes, I can't see any squished dead bees and my jars are at least 5 different colours. Admittedly I don't have the wax from these frames as the bees will deal with that, but I don't use it anyway as I don't like it (and if I wanted it, I can get frames from elsewhere and do it the old fashioned messy way). Yes they are expensive but I love love love mine and well worth the investment so I don't do all that work. Also as I'm not homogenising the honey, I get all the different flavours. Best bit - no harm to my busy bees and they weren't even angry at me. (this time) In a couple of weeks I'll be harvesting another 6-7 frames for hopefully another 20 ish kg. Over the year my frames produce at least 3 harvests - but that depends on your climate and flowering. I just wouldn't want to do that much through the old fashioned method.
@@SageandStoneHomestead thanks for the reply. I think I couldn't transfer my question well enough. My actual question is that how much honey you usually get from each hive on each harvest? I see that you harvested around 125 lbs of honey from 28 frames or say 3 boxes. So how long did it take for the bees to make that much of honey? In other words when you put back the empty frames into the hives, how long will you wait for the next harvest for the approximately same amount of honey?
We only harvest in fall. The bees sometimes need honey taken off during the spring flow but usually I opt to add more boxes vs take any off. How fast they fill a box depends greatly on the size of the colony. We have had them fill up an 8 frame medium in a week before!
@@SageandStoneHomestead Some youtubers (but not youtube advertisers) are skittish about making health claims. I was using "IF" to give you an out while addressing the coffee issue. I now about raw honey's enzymes. The heat in coffee is bad for the enzymes, but caffeine itself is known to inhibit the absorption of some vitamins. I have to think it has bad affects on the enzymes even consumed cold.
@@EndingSimple I bet you are correct!! It's interesting to me that a lot of fad diets still cling to coffee. We never claim to be super health conscious and we still blend in some conventional foods with our farm diet, but yes I bet you are correct.
Definitely not a job for an impatient person! That honey looks delicious. Levi needs to chuck that spinner handle up a drill 😂 or maybe he needed the arm workout.

If you put the strainer back to the bees they would clean it nicely.
We did :)
Buckwheat honey is best for coffee - in my opinion 😊
You can make solid cologne and beard balm with the extra bee's wax.
I'll have to look up recipes! Thank you!
I can’t do coffee with honey either 😢
How many frames do you leave for the bees for over wintering?
This does depend, usually condensed down to one box is fine, they will backfill the brood nest as it shrinks down and have about 10 frames to eat from during our mild winters. I have left the brood nest plus a medium super on the top and they didn't eat into the super come spring.
That's absolutely amazing! I would so be buying that honey 🤤. Honey in coffee 🤔 never heard of that. I put it in my tea but that's about it.
Tea and on bread is what I do most!! Some recipes too
@@SageandStoneHomestead yes!
I need to try that!!
Loved your videos ❤

Thank you so much!! ♥
(this time)
In a couple of weeks I'll be harvesting another 6-7 frames for hopefully another 20 ish kg. Over the year my frames produce at least 3 harvests - but that depends on your climate and flowering. I just wouldn't want to do that much through the old fashioned method.
We have a flow super and I do not like it. I much prefer this traditional way of extraction. To each their own, it's wonderful we have options.
Where did you get that frame storage box?

I like honey in tea with lemon.
In tea and on fresh bread is how I consume honey most often!! So good. ♡♡♡
I like honey in tea but have not try in coffee yet 😊
Let me know what you think if you do try it!
have you ever tried frozen honey? i heard it's pretty good
No I imagine I'd hate it!
Love honey in my coffee love it.
Do you just do honey and coffee and that's it?
Lovely video, thanks for sharing. How often you get a harvest? Every year? Every month? Every 3 weeks?
In theory. This year we chose to leave everything for the bees! We still have 2.5 gallons from last year and the bees needed it .
@@SageandStoneHomestead I got it. Thank you so much for the replies. By the way, I'm a new subscriber.
Welcome to the channel! ♥
I only like honey in tea. Sugar and cream in coffee!
That's me too!!
I love honey
Me too!!♡♡
Yes honey I the coffee but very little.
I need to put less probably!!
IF pure honey has medicinal effects (no claims made) then I would think drinking coffee with it would reduce those benefits (IF true).
Yes heating honey does affect the enzymes. There are real studies on health benefits of raw honey if you look for them.
I’ve seen people make lip balm out of the wax
Yes!! So many great uses. We use it in salves and candles too.
Remember that you should not use a metal spoon, when dip your your honey
quick scooping is unlikely to cause corrosion or metal leeching :)
Can the beeswax be collected and utilized?
I should have just waited. You just explained about wanting to try beeswax candles. Good luck. That would be cool.
Haha no problem! I haven't used the wax yet but I hope to soon!
Definitely not a job for an impatient person! That honey looks delicious. Levi needs to chuck that spinner handle up a drill 😂 or maybe he needed the arm workout.
We don't think the drill has enough variable control, I think it will move too fast!! Maybe not!
@@SageandStoneHomestead makes sense!
What's the flower source of the honey?
Anything within 5 miles of our house. This was harvested in fall too and probably has honey from spring thru fall in it. "Wildflower" honey I suppose.
@@SageandStoneHomestead oh I see. Great video 👍
I subscribed to your Channel. 😀
@@samuelaguilar9668 welcome!!
I love honey in my coffee
It's something I could learn to love!
Beeswax boot grease!
Oh, smart!!!
Beeswax deodorant and chap stick!!
Ah!! I'm really interested in the deodorant!!
Or beeswax candles!!!! 😊😊😊🥰🥰🥰
Waoo amazing ❤❤
I'm with you. Coffee and honey is a not so much for me. It's just wrong.
It seems wrong to me too but a lot of people love it! I'm going to try adding cinnamon!!
@@SageandStoneHomestead try sitting cinnamon in to of the grounds before brewing.. yum!
Yes!!!♡♡
I like Honey in my Oatmeal.
Yum!!
Beeswax Suggestion..CHAPSTICK….me and my sister in law buys the beeswax chapstick like crazy in bulk on Amazon…my sister in law uses it so much she sleeps with it in her pocket kmsl 🤣😂
Haha it definitely sounds like she really loves it!! I found kits to make Chapstick in my beekeeping catalog!
@@SageandStoneHomestead Thats great, hopefully you decide to make some because I will try them and if they work well for us I will stock up with you. 😊
Wax crayons,lib balm,candles,
Wouldt it be better to cut downwards??
Not sure!! I don't know if it matters.
I would suggest trying some different types of coffee
Maybe! It's still pretty flowery and I may like a fall honey in the coffee as opposed to spring honey. We have a lot of elderflower around and it's great honey just odd in coffee.
Honey is much better in tea.
I agree!
Any chance you have links to your supplies that you used in this video? Storage boxes, cerated knives, pick, etc?
I do not, but the storage boxes are from Hive Butler and the other tools are from Mann Lake
Beeswax soap
Very good idea!
No need to put honey in the freezer.
When you are concerned about hive beetle larvae hatching out on the frames it's a good idea.
Try honey in your coffee black
I will! Thank you!!
I want to be your neighbor! Lol
That would be so fun, we would have a whole homesteading little community!!
@@SageandStoneHomestead yes!! We need to gather fellow homesteaders and have a meet up!
A lot of stuff is organized on Facebook and I often miss it because of that. There's been a couple things that I've wanted to attend and was notified in time but they were too far away!! IDK if I could manage organizing anything myself lol
@@SageandStoneHomestead I bet with help something could be organized! Doesn’t have to be hundreds of people or an expensive extravaganza
Mesquite honey is perfect for coffee. I don't like floral honey.
I will have to try some, thanks!
How much mam
The honey is $15 on our website SageAndStoneHomestead.com
Congrats,on bountiful honey👏 👏 👏,
Thank you!!♡♡
Spun those frames way to hard.
Quite possible! This was our first extraction :)
There’s no “open honey” - there’s nectar and until it’s capped it’s not honey
Incorrect. Honey is honey at 19% moisture or below regardless if it's had a wax capping or not.
lip balm
Plastic frames ??? UGGGG
?? Nobody is forcing plastic frames onto you?
@@SageandStoneHomestead plastic frames harbor SHB’s in the little pockets Hated them for that lol
@@trappeddownriver4047 wooden frames give places for wax moth larvae. I guess we each have our own reasons for what we do, yes? Let's try not to judge when success looks different for everyone.

Water lemon juice and honey. It's better than Red Bull!
