  • In this video, I go through every aspect of my finances as a performer! I cover my monthly bills like rent, groceries, etc. I talk about every penny I spend on this career. I give you a full transparent look at what pursuing this career actually entails, money-wise. I hope this is helpful to those who are about to be moving to NYC, are thinking of pursuing this career, or who are in the same position I am and are curious about what other actors are doing. Let me know if you have any questions!!

    So transparent and informative. I especially appreciate the transparency of just knowing that it all goes to shit, you have your wonderful parents to help. So many people fail to acknowledge this Xx

    I'm a professional jazz musician that used to do musical theater. One of the biggest reasons I switched was because of the expenses of theater life. As a musician, I only have to worry about the general upkeep of my clarinet and sax. And that's minimal, especially when u know how to do it yourself as far as taking care of your instruments(cleaning and repairs). Very informative video!

    This was a very good video. As a mom of a BFA student, it is really helpful to see/hear the reality of what’s coming.

      I'm SO glad this video reached you! I know my mom would have loved to watch videos like this. As the children going through the industry, it can be really hard to explain to our parent's the true ins and outs of everything. Hopefully my videos continue to be helpful

    I love your transparency!! I work a “9-5”been doing it for years. It is something stable and pays well but can be stressful. I do have student loans, live in a very expensive apartment but I love where I live. I’m learning to compartmentalize and let go to manage the stress. Also pouring into the creativity. I’m getting older in my 30s lol although there is no limits to dreams, I really want to nurture and cultivate the music parts of me. This was so great!! Gonna check out that other video you mentioned as well!!

    Have you considered speaking (and getting paid for it) at colleges and universities?! I wish someone like you had come to talk to my acting class! It would have helped so much.

      I actually really want to do this for nutrition!! I have a package that I’m planning on sending out to universities this month. Maybe I can include some other stuff like this, too!

    Seeing your finances laid out in black and white is often shocking. Budgeting in the theater world is crucial. Our bodies are our instruments and we have to keep all aspects of the artistry in shape and theater ready. Again, this is not a profession for the weak.😊

    Hi , you ever watched the 1960s T.V show, called THAT GIRL, it's about An aspiring actress moves from her hometown of Brewster, New York, to try to make it big in New York City, having to take several offbeat "temp" jobs to support herself in between her various auditions and bit parts.

    2:00 I didn’t realize rent control was still an available option for new tenants in NYC. I always thought this was a thing of the past that had gone away with only longtime renters still getting this benefit. How does rent control work? Are certain buildings/apartments associated with rent control policies?

    • @melcabeyvlogs
      @melcabeyvlogs  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Rent control and rent stabilized are different things!
      Rent control - a unit is rent controlled if the tenant has been living there since before 1971 and they have a maximum rent rate established
      Rent stabilized - these are units that can only be increased each year by a certain percentage, I think the max is 3%? My apartment only went up $25 each year I’ve renewed, as opposed to my friends who are in normal apartments their rents went up between $500-$2000 💀

      @@melcabeyvlogs Thank you for this explanation. Some rentals have gone up by $2K? That’s wild!

      The amount of stress I feel about money 24/7 is insane! I will say that when I do book a big theatre gig, that stress lessens immensely 😅
