    Even though it’s just me and my husband, we have had a Costco membership for years. We go about 4-5 times per year and only buy a series of really specific things. But the reason we continue to renew is less to do with the bargains and more about wanting to support a business that treats their employees well. If we need something that we CAN get at Costco in a size appropriate for our needs, we probably will.

    I switched to eating low carb 3 years ago. One side benefit has been skipping 90% of food stores. In and out is quick. I was surprised how much time that saves me, decisions on what to buy is simple. The number of different things I buy is very low now.

    Honestly I did save money shopping in Trader Joe's when I lived in a city with one. I always saved $20-30 compared to when I bought the same items in other supermarkets. It's what makes lining up at the checkout line and lugging heavy bags into the train station worth it. If I didn't save money, I would never do it.

    Costco doesn't always have the best deal. Butter, for example is $10 for 4lbs, where as Kroger has butter for $1.99 a lb at least 1x a month. But I also agree, a lot of people don't need that much food. For a couple or a single person, it doesn't make sense.

    Some people don't like the self check out. I hate walmart having 1 checker in the whole store and numerous self checkouts. They don't pay me to do their job. I'd rather wait in line and have human interaction with a cashier. But, that's just me!

    • @wildshadowstar
      @wildshadowstar 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The Kroger store I frequent just as much as Walmart has just as few cashiers as Walmart. I’d rather have the self check out because I feel as if I get in and out just as quick and I can bag my items how I want, often using reusable bags and fewer to boot.

    • @KS-un3pi
      @KS-un3pi 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@wildshadowstar I understand the speed of the process. And that gives them all the more ability to have no one to help besides the person watching you check yourself out and bag your own things. It just aggravates me. I prefer HEB here in Texas. I hate self check out unless it's for 1-5 small items. Everytime I see cart fulls in line at Walmart self checkout it makes me think there's probably someone who lost a job for us to self checkout. I love Costco. Since we stopped going every 1 1/2 weeks and or so and go only about 4 times a year, however, our total grocery bill has gone way down and we stay on budget.
    We've done great with the VISA card that is tied in with the yearly membership. Using VISA's rewards last February we bought about $450 worth of groceries for $25. We also got a direct rebate check from Costco. We have an Executive Membership so we might do better than someone with a regular membership. The Costco rebate pays more than half of our membership fee. We charge everything we can on the VISA card and pay off the balance each month.

    The reason to shop at Costco once a week is because you have space at home to store up non perishables and can get through perishables before they spoil. It is basically a one-stop shop store for the most part. The hardest is the produce, however a good due diligence monthly/weekly menu of fruits and vegetables can remedy that, too include juicing last minute. Costco is mostly not for the low income , but rather the stable or higher income earning. The organic selection is awesome, but pricey compared to non organic...no surprise there! The membership for gas prices may be a reason for low income though. However Costco is not the all cure for shopping as items go in and out of inventory seasonally which requires an alternative shopping store. Don't forget that Costco does not use coupons unlike other food stores. Don't really care for the food demos as they are setup for compulsive buying. I however heard of people getting a good lite meal when hitting every stand? Finally, thanks to Costco, Covid was a breeze as stockage avoided constant shopping...even with Toilet Paper (TP) hoarding! A pack of TP can last a whole year for a tiny house hold.
    Amazon is no comparison to Costco as you have a tangible product vs. an online untangible.
    Ikea is expensive, far to drive to and really weird in taste (see stringy light lamps...blech!). The food part is nifty however I never liked the idea of A la carte menus. Reminds me of the hospital settings!

    Not a fan of any of these grocery stores. We have a Sam's membership, but my hubby goes there because I hate the experience. I've never had an Ikea near me, so I can't comment on those stores - however, from the footage here, no thanks, another warehouse. I went to Trader Joe's once to get their everything bagel seasoning shortly after they opened. I shopped the store. It's great for people who want new and unusual food combinations but like the video says, it's not an everything store and since I don't get joy out of shopping, I went back to my locally owned grocery store who, yes, are a few pennies more expensive per item than a Walmart, Target, Meijer, Costco, Sams, BUT, there are no impulse buys driving up my expenses. I'm in and out in 30 minutes for a full grocery shopping list and they have carry out service. I'm not incapable of loading my own groceries into my car, but while I don't live, work or shop in a crime riddled area, I like that I'm not alone in a parking lot after dark in the winter months. I also like Instacart and spend even less - with the only drawback being that sometimes the stores are out of a product so you go without or get 20 messages asking to substitute (which is fine, but annoying). So, sorry big box stores. A zillion people joyously shop at your stores, and even get a warm and fuzzy concept of savings, but savvy shoppers know that's not true unless they're incredibly disciplined in sticking only to what is on their shopping list. It's just not worth it to me to have to walk a gigantic store, purposely laid out to make you go to all corners of it for staple items and do so for that impulse buying, with hit or miss on whether or not they're still carrying the products you purchased there before and continuously changing where the items are located (Sam's in notorious for this). I guess I just don't and never will see grocery shopping as an exciting event.

    The name of the company mentioned where IKEA customers can hire someone to assemble the furniture they purchased gave me an excellent idea for a Warner Brothers Looney Tunes cartoon. Task Rabbit, starring Elmer Fudd and Bugs Bunny. In the cartoon, Elmer Fudd has just come home with a shipment of IKEA furniture in boxes. He calls Task Rabbit, and an employee of theirs will be over shortly to do the work. What poor Elmer doesn’t know is the employee is none other than Bugs Bunny, who will eventually make Elmer wish he’d opened those boxes and put the furniture together by himself.

    In Hong Kong, IKEA delivers and assembles, even 10 years ago and they are very good at it. The stores are smaller and you may have to wait for an item but if IKEA offers the planning that is a huge perk. I've had a complete IKEA office for 16 years. I have a Tylosand and I ruined a cover, I ordered a new one from the Uk. My MIL has a family room that lasted through grandkids, washable covers and she buys new covers. IKEA has a range of quality, and good design and they stand by their warranties. IKEA Hackers is still going strong and they last well enough to be sold such places as MarketPlace.. I have a nicer sofa at another property and quickly learned that I can't get replacement covers, that is not due to the quality it is due to poor design. I agree this is how stores get us but I don't like Costco or Trader Joe's but I have friends who are addicted. I miss Wild Oats, funny that TJs is Aldi when so many TJ fans snub Aldi.

    14:00 Oh! So that's the reason why I hate Ikea so much. I typically go into a store with a purpose to get specific items. I don't get pleasure from forced discovery, I get rage. Its also a freakin maze, I couldn't get out immediately even if I wanted to.

    Wait until you live out in the boondock countryside nowhereland. Never once set foot into a Costco, Walmart, etcetera. Looked down on them having lived most of my life in a major city. Suddenly, I was driving an hour to Costco once every two weeks. There was no Trader Joe's in the entire state. I'm now back in my cozy major city and I am happy for the things the city provides. And I am glad to patronize all those businesses...except Walmart. Walmart sucks.

    The competitive price things like furniture are crap & the well made furniture is much more expensive. I find a better value for quality & variety available on Wayfair, overstock or other online retailers. & Usually the shipping is reasonable or free if you spend a certain $ amount & they save you a hassle filled car trip to /from Ikea. Honestly I feel the be cheap accessory type items are the only things with buying there & you can find those in other places as well.

    I guess I'm in the minority. Never been in a Costco, bit I have a Sam's membership. Rarely been in an Ikea. Only been in 1 Trader Joe's, twice.
    I think being in the minority is fine, because I've worked retail, and I know the game. I don't "fall for" all the gizmos and gadgets. I do my research before going into Ikea. I also, take a list. That is the biggest thing that saves me. I only go in for what I need. The joys of looking around, while sometimes I have those, I budget, and try to keep to it. If I see something or like, I think on it, research the best items, then bite the bullet. I am not good at impulse shopping. I do enjoy watch some of my favorite TH-camrs do "hauls" from these stores, but I don't pqrtake.
