    Returned to say that the guy hitting the thimble with a screwdriver is actually a good method and one that I use, it "cracks" loose the taper, not damaging the mic. This method of calibration is often better than using the wrench on the sleeve as the wrench can dig in and damage the sleeve, especially on a brand new mic!😉💨👍

    Gettin the FeeI: I close the mic up slowly to one click on the ratchet. That guy wanged that ratchet around like he was tightening up a lug nut on a JCB. Precision instruments = precision movements.

    I am new to this but I don't think I should smack a high pressition instrument with the back of a screwdriver over and over again. I just cant see a metrology lab member doing this to any instrument...

      De Montalvo - He's breaking loose a taper - that's the way it is done.

      @@stevek5416 I just made the same comment and then saw this. Indeed yes, its the way I do it too, although I use a _rubberized_ handled screwdriver! 😉

    • @stevek5416
      @stevek5416 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheGeezzer- He's using a plastic handled screwdriver, which won't damage any of the steel parts (doesn't matter what is used, as long as it is non-marring). To break a self-holding taper, a SHARP impact has to be imparted to the part you want loose. To me, a rubberized handle will absorb a lot of the shock, so multiple tries are possibly needed.

      @@stevek5416 Hi Steve, a solid firm whack broke loose the taper straight away with my rubberized handle...on several mics. 100% agree that as long as it's non-marring it'll be fine. The old boys in the workshops prolly used wooden-handled tools.
