    I loosened the left screw 1/16 of an inch and it removed the error. I didn't touch the right screw. Thank you for the useful video.

    Hey Mate
    what awesome video
    when I was about 8 years old I took apart My old mans short wave radio Because tuner knob was not right!!!!
    needless to say I kind of broke the darn thing , Now I am 53 and there are very few things I cannot fix ....
    your video saved me time and effort . I bought 1-2 Mic for 40.00 dollars on craigslist .
    took maybe 45 minute after seeing your video to get working. thanks again

    The reason why it isn't ratcheting is that it's a friction thimble, as in it uses friction of the spring to limit torque on the measuring surfaces

    Hello nice job getting it apart without killing it. #1 what your mic has is a friction thimble , they have one that looks similar But has a ratchet mechanism inside and i rather prefer that to the slip sleeve you have. #2 the flashing “P” is a preset function which allows one to set a origin preset numeric value. But you must hold the button in till the cursers appear under each display digit. CAUTION the first space will change the display from positive to minus. Lets say you have a 1.500 gage block you can set the origin value to 1.500 rather than 1.000 . Only one thing if you need to reset the origin you will need the 1.500 block. We should all keep in mind the accuracy of measuring instruments still rely on the accuracy of the ground mic screw thread, its only converting the rotation to a rotary counter for digital display which is must faster to read the value. People its not magic, the tools suffer the same damage when dropped or misused . Always treat them with great respect & care & ( NEVER LEND THEM OUT ).

    I’m just reassembling my digimatic, the rotor of the encoder is keyed to the spindle with a pointed grub screw, which is in turn locked with a second screw in the same hole. Took me a while to work out but really helped once I knew. What surprised me was how simple the design is and how well it works.

      @@JBFromOZFYI you have a friction thimble, not a ratchet thimble. Two different things. It's not supposed to "ratchet" or "click."

    I can't get the little black steel cylinder that guides the measuring rod back on without removing the connector pin holder. Have you removed it?

      I finally figured it out. Inside the panel, on the steam is a collar with a screw in it. When you remove that screw, there is another screw underneath it. Remove both and it will pull out.

    Nice vid sir, I have an older one inch digital and it does indeed have a ratchet mechanism, which is very very easy to fuck up the spring! Don't take apart unless you are prepared to get a new one from Mitutoyo lol I have just got a standard 0-1" tenths mic and it has the same spring arrangement as yours has, having no clicks but relying on the friction of the spring unwinding to give the same moment of force to close the faces of the spindle and anvil.

    • @JBFromOZ
      @JBFromOZ  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes indeed! Attempting to open up a set of delicate instruments like these is always a risk if the first time. This is one reason I try to capture my folly for others to learn before they also follow ;-)

    Almost had one bought - good overview. Seller contacted me and said it got wonky after he put in a battery. Almost worth taking a shot with it.

    You don't hear ratcheting clicks with yours because of that wire spring. Other similar Mitutoyos will be fitted with a flat sheet metal spring instead, which is riding on an internal ratcheting wheel inside the barrel. Those are the ones that click.

    • @JBFromOZ
      @JBFromOZ  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have a follow up video which shows both types of mechanism!, I prefer the metal spring one, it feels more "positive", the wire spring seems to loosen up over time

      When you look at the options for Micrometers, this is called a friction thimble. the one you prefer is a ratchet thimble. Thanks for sharing your video.

      indeed!, here is my video illustrating the two variants, thanks heaps for watching

    How do you turn this bugger off? Referring to the Mitutoyo.

    • @JBFromOZ
      @JBFromOZ  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      From memory it turns the display off after idling for some time, (this helps retain position so it doesn’t lose calibration between uses) it remains on low draw power to hold position though, so batteries do drain over time

      I agree, though some of the shots helped me with re-assembly of mine. Would have been great to see the steps involved with disassembly and equally the re-assembly of the mic. I'm still struggling with a stiff thimble and haven't figured out the purpose of the ratchet portion, my ratchet thimble just free spins when closing the mic, seems to work okay when opening it though.
