    Thank you so much for watching! I really hope this video helped explain the difference between nail services and now you know what to ask for. I am tired of people getting scammed into thinking they are getting something they're not! Ok, rant over ;)
    ** I forgot to mention that some companies do make a soak off version of hard gel. This is not the case with every company though, but it still does not change the fact that the product will be a gel, not a liquid and powder. ***

    Its time to set the record straight!:
    Acrylic: Liquid and Powder product used to create artificial nails
    Solar: Brand of acrylic
    Gel Nails or Hard Gel: Gel product used to create artificial nails, must be cured in UV or LED light. Must be filed off, some brands have created a version that can be soaked off.
    Gel Polish: Thinner polish-like gel. Cannot provide any extra length. Cured in UV or LED light. Shellac is a brand name of gel polish. Will be soaked off.

    • @sarahblue1914
      @sarahblue1914 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Acrylic is harder and doesn't allow flexibility, tends to break off and cause nail damage while doing so. Acrylic isn't necessarily worse or bad, it just depends on how you use your hands and your personal needs. I prefer the flex of the gel because I do alot of stuff with my hands and it doesn't break but it sometimes does lifts faster but it usually happens when I want to change them anyway, approx a month of wear.

    really broke it down for me, because i rarely ever get my nails done. I've gotten my nails done at least 4 times at the salon and i'm 25. Now that i know what is what I will definitely go in there with questions and if i don't like what i hear i am out of there! Thanks.

    I recently started doing my own nails because of how much I was being charged for horrible nails that never lasted more than 2 weeks. I had no idea there was a difference in the nails until now. But every nail Salon in my town does advertise all 3 nails but I have tried all of them and there was powder and liquid used on all of them. I had no idea it was different until you just explained the difference. Thank you for this video

    This is a very informative video . I too get a little rifted when someone says to me ...love your nails ...then I say , thanks they are gel ...then they say , oh , well mine are gel too . They I ask the question of how they were applied . I then break the news to them that it is really acrylic with gel polish over it . I hate to tell them they have been tricked . Then OMG the Solar Nail thing always gets me ....it's acrylic people ... just acrylic ....and Shellac is really just a brand name for Gel polish . Although I do think that Shellac does have a ingredient that makes it get thicker when left out in the open , unlike regular gel polish . It would have to be something the evaporates . I use CND Shellac for foiling ...One thing I must mention , which I think you left out ....that there are SOAK OFF( soft ) uv/led builder gels that can be made to construct gel nails . Then to remove those gel nails.....the surface is file and then soaked off . Unlike HARD GEL , which is just that hard ...and needs filing off to remove it . Your video was great . You got a new subbie and I will share this on my nail page on FB which is Bold and Beautiful Nails .

    This video was so very helpful! I have only gotten my nails professionally done on two occasions and I honestly thought the process was all the same. After watching this video I find that my first set of nails were acrylics with gel polish and the second was the same (but with "dip gel" polish as they called it). Clearing up Solar nails and Shellac definitely made sense! Those at the salon made it seem like gel polish and shellac were two different treatments. Very well explained!

    Awesome video. Great work and so happy you addresses it. To answer the "Shellac Mystery" - Shellac and Gel Polish are chemically different. They are applied the same, which is why people think it's gel polish. Gel polish is a hard gel diluted down to act like a "polish." Shellac is more like a polish bumped up to "look" like gel, but there isn't any gel in Shellac. This is what I was taught by CND. I also spoke with the company. It is it's own category of product. Doug Schoone has great articles and books on everything nails and brands.

    This is hands down the best video I’ve seen to explain the difference between acrylic extensions and hard gel extensions, I never know what to explain or what to call it when I go to the nail salon and they always tell me I’m talking about acrylic but I’m not, it’s so hard to find a nail salon that understands exactly what I’m looking for, I don’t want fake tips and I don’t want acrylic I want the hard gel, this is the best video seriously I don’t usually comment on videos but I had to for this one

    So glad I saw this! I asked for "a full set of gell nails, not the gell overlay but actual gell nails" they said it's still a powder. I don't get it. Alot of places call it a pink and white manicure and classify that as gell. I've never even seen what you have at a salon and now I am determined to find it.

    • @bonniew1992
      @bonniew1992 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hard gel and acrylic share one very important characteristic - it is the quality or lack thereof of the application and removal that preserves or damages the natural nail, not the product. A skilled nail tech will not damage your nails with either hard gel or acrylic. Since acrylic can be soaked off, it might be the better option if you don't think you are going to keep your enhancements and don't want to go to a salon to have them professionally removed by a skilled nail tech. On the other hand, it is perfectly reasonable to put a soak-off base gel down first (for example, Mani-Cure from Light Elegance, Katie's and my preferred brand), and then put the non-soak-off hard gel on top for strength. Removal then consists of filing almost all the product off, but leave a thin layer of gel on. That layer should be the soak-off, and you can then soak that thin layer off relatively quickly with no damage at all to the natural nail. If you pull your nails off, gel or acrylic, you WILL damage the natural nail. By the same token, never let someone try to remove your enhancements of any kind by trying to pry them off, using nippers to chip them off, or sliding a tip between the natural nail and the enhancement, or any other forceful method. That is guaranteed to cause damage, in spite of which many salons will try to do that. Hope this helps, late as it is.

    Q: Would I be able to go from acrylics to gel polish and do it myself at home? Will the gel polish provide enough strength like the acrylics do? (I have long natural nails under my acrylics, not tips)

    • @NailsByKatieDutra
      @NailsByKatieDutra  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No gel polish does not provide strength like acrylics. You’ll need to completely remove your acrylics before doing gel polish and I’d recommend taking your nails down shorter because you won’t have the same strength. It’s more like a thicker stronger polish.

  • @pucashells1
    @pucashells1 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    which would you suggest to lengthen your nails for someone who has short nails that aren't very strong and tend to break easily? I'm new to going to the nails salon and surprisingly the one that I went to charged less for solar nails then they did acrylics though I knew they were the same. Also what are SNS nails? (or what they call signature nails?)

    • @NailsByKatieDutra
      @NailsByKatieDutra  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      As far as I know SNS nails are acrylic powder and resin(glue). I am not sure how they would hold up, never really seen anyone doing them before. As far as lengthening your nails acrylic or gel would work great. Also there is an amazing nail treatment you might look into called IBX. If you go to their website you can locate techs who use it, it will really help strengthen your natural nails! :)

    this was so helpful!! I read an article about the difference of gel (hard gel) and "shellac" gel polish, and after reading about the differences I wanted to get hard gel. So I go into the nail salon, and she asks me what I want, I said gel...because ive never been in a salon before, (only to get mani's and pedi's when I was little once with my mom and used regular polish) and so then she said to me, "gel? a full set?" and im like..."no...not acrylic, gel..." and then she shoes me the prices, and says, "you want acrylic?" and I said no, no fake nails, and she goes, "then you get shellac". I was so confused but I really didnt want acrylics so I just went with it. I was happy with the results, since Im growing out my nails and wanted something harder/lasts longer than regular polish, but damn...I knew I wasnt crazy! I wanted hard gel! lol...next time.

    • @NailsByKatieDutra
      @NailsByKatieDutra  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m glad my video was helpful for you! Hard gel is still a form of fake nails like acrylic, you can get a full set of hard gel just like you can get a full set of acrylic. Both a form of fake nails just 2 different products. So if you don’t want fake nails than the gel polish is probably what you would want.

    Hello! 👋🏻 I know this video is a year old, but I just ran across this video. I have been trying to look into the different nail techniques since I'm not fond of acrylics. In a few weeks I'm going to a salon that does building gel, what is your opinion on that? Also, they told me I could get shellac on top of the builder gel for color or regular polish but it's an upcharge, is builder gel and shellac the same or is it worth it to lock in color? This video os very informational, thanks for sharing!

    • @NailsByKatieDutra
      @NailsByKatieDutra  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Megan Palmeri Hi! So the builder gel is the hard gel I talked about in the video. Shellac is not the same, shellac is a gel polish. So if you want a color then you can get the shellac, otherwise it's just going to be whatever color they use for the builder gel (pink or clear)

But I was wondering can you put on acrylic nails and then top coat it with a gel polish? and if so, how do you take it off? and does it do anything to the acrylic like mess it up or anything? and if I use the gel polish on my acrylic nail does it have to be cured in the lamp regardless? So it doesn't dry like normal top coat? I hope you can answer these questions for me. Great informative video keep it up hun!!!!

    • @NailsByKatieDutra
      @NailsByKatieDutra  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes you can put gel polish on top of acrylics. It will need to be cured in a UV or LED light depending on the brand. As far as removal, i would file it off. If you soak it off you risk soaking off the acrylics with it. Hope that helps :)

      +NailsByKatieDutra thank you for replying so quickly. Can using a drill to file the gel polish off just as good as a regular file. And using a lamp to cure the polish does it have to be a special kind of lamp, besides it being an LED or UV light?

    • @NailsByKatieDutra

      Yes using an electric file will work just fine and as long as its made for nails the lamp should be fine. :)

    Haven't had gel nail but have had acrylics a couple times and I just could not wear them I suppose that I have sensitive nails because they are sore. And I just could not do anything with them on. Is there a difference with the gel nails? Can you do more with them on? Do they make you less sore. Or should I just start getting gel polish and call it a day?

    • @NailsByKatieDutra
      @NailsByKatieDutra  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They are still fake nails so it depends on each person if you can do day to day tasks, but with both acrylic and hard gel you don’t have to them long. You can do just an overlay over your natural nails and keep them short, but the product will provide strength. As far as soreness that could be multiple factors. The tech could have been too rough with your natural nails during prep but also, acrylic takes a full 48hrs to cure completely, which can cause them to feel sore. I don’t experience that with hard gel at all, but again it could be just that they are too rough on your natural nails so it’s important to see someone who cares about the health of the natural nail.

    Hi I'm new to all this nail stuff and I'v had what they called IBD gel nails applied which is clearly gel polish, I was looking to have extensions put on and someone recommended nexgen nails which seems to use a powder but not in the same way as acrylic it can also be put onto your own nails too. is this nexgen nails and gel nail? I'm having it done on 29th July 2017 and just wanted to properly understand what I'm getting

    • @NailsByKatieDutra
      @NailsByKatieDutra  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Helen Hurlock it looks like the nexgen product is a dipping system. So they apply a resin or glue and dip your nails into acrylic powder. It's just a different method or applying, but do not be fooled by the claims of it being "healthier" for your nails. It's still acrylic and what matters is the proper care the tech takes into prepping and caring for your natural nails.

    Thank you sooo much for this very informative video! Are gel nails better than acrylic? And ehat's the benefit. How do you prep the nail bed before aplying gel? And how to remove the product? Can it be soaked off?
    Thanks?

    • @NailsByKatieDutra
      @NailsByKatieDutra  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi! 😊 One is not better than the other, it’s really about personal preference of the nail tech, also everyone’s body chemistry is different and some people’s nails work better with one product vs the other. Prep for hard gel and for acrylic are the same. Hard gel cannot be soaked off in acetone so the only way to remove it is to file it off. However, some brands have made soak off builder gels which can be soaked off with acetone. Usually the soak off gels are not quite as strong though as the true hard gel. Hope that helps.

    • @bonniew1992
      @bonniew1992 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Chemically, gels are also a form of acrylic, but the chemical process used to harden them is different from what we call "acrylic" in the industry. It is an exothermic (heat-producing) process that is initiated by exposure to certain wavelengths of light. I would check out lightelegance.com or one of the other gel manufacturers' web sites for more information. Hard gels, at least in my area (Denver) can be hard to find. In Oregon, where LE is based, they seem to be a dime a dozen lol. Canada and Europe both seem to do more gels than the US on average. I love hard gels - no smell, fully cured and hard when they come out of the light (typically 30 seconds for LED and 2 minutes for UV, varies from product to product), and no pink nail polish streaks left behind whenever I try to fold a piece of paper.

    So how do you get a very natural looking nail like a pink (medium not very pink, more natural nail bed color) and white (off white) look with gel? Can you do a tutorial? They call this the American Nail, some say pink and white. I just had my nails done tonight. They were upfront about using acrylic, but he convinced me to get a clear gel finish which was way to shiny for my taste. I guess they wanted to use this so the color wouldn't change as it tends to do with acrylic. This doesn't bother me. My nail tech's salon closed and I'd been going there for 15 years so I pretty much just trusted them and have had zero issues with my nails going to them on and off over the years. She is retiring so I'm lost now. If it's good quality acrylic and done right I see no difference from week 1-2-3. I like the buff and shine finish. It's natural looking and not overly shiny. He ended up filing the gel off and applying a light layer of acrylic to fix. I don't know why I let him talk me into it.

    • @NailsByKatieDutra
      @NailsByKatieDutra  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes you can get a natural looking nail with gels! :) There are many different colors of gel and many shades of natural pink. They also make many different whites, some natural, some very bright whites. I will add that to my video lists. Yes, good quality acrylic will look always look great!

    • @NailsByKatieDutra

    • @NailsByKatieDutra
      @NailsByKatieDutra  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      None of them are healthier. It’s all about how someone preps your nails. My biggest advice is to find a nail tech who cares about the health of your natural nails, then it doesn’t matter what product they use. Someone can over file your natural nails with gel just the same as with acrylic. So start by finding a good tech who cares about your nail health and then you should be good ☺️

      In my area gel enhancements are not common in nail salons. I would suggest calling some salons in your area to see if they offer them. You can ask for gel enhancements, hard gels or traditional gels are all terms for them.

      +Sarah Stacey The powder is definitely acrylic. I have heard salons use this term before and it is usually a system of either glue or gel that they then dip into acrylic powder. There is no such thing as a gel powder. True gel is a gel.

    So for hairstylist needs to get “gel nail” because it won’t stains? I use the cnd sculpting powder, basically a higher brand of acrylic & than a put a gel polish on top but i add the “IBD clear bulder gel” as a top coat. would it help to avoid hair dye stains?
    & why using hard builder gel it burns in the lamp?Thank you !

    • @NailsByKatieDutra
      @NailsByKatieDutra  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      To prevent staining you can use a hard gel top coat over your acrylics, IBD should have a hard gel top coat. No need to apply the gel polish top coat. Not all Builder gels are shiny like a top coat once they are cured so it’s best to just use a top coat. And hard gel has a heat spike because as it’s curing it’s changing from a liquid to a solid, this creates energy which creates heat. To avoid it getting too hot either apply thin layers (the thicker it is the hotter it will get) or go in and out of the lamp a couple times to slow down the process, if you feel it start to get hot keep your hand out until it’s subsided. Hope that helps you 😊

    • @NailsByKatieDutra
      @NailsByKatieDutra  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dipping nails are done with resin and acrylic powder. It’s not better for your nails. All that matters is how the tech is applying it. A nail tech can damage your nails not matter what product is being applied, it’s not about the product it’s about the nail tech. Besides that it’s a personal preference.
