Garmin Zumo XT Motorcycle GPS Test Ride and First Impressions

- The Garmin Zumo XT (bit.ly/3eJ4eKt) is a GPS unit specifically designed for use with motorcycles. It has many features that make it an ideal companion on your dual sport and adventure bike trips, so I was stoked to pick one up on sale and give it a try. Come along on my first ride with the Zumo XT on my Africa Twin as I test out the features of the unit and give you my first impressions on the fit and finish, functionality, features, value, and how I think it will work with both my ADV and dual sport motorcycles. One of the big questions I've had as an off road motorcycle rider is whether or not it will have all the forest service and logging roads pre loaded on the unit so that it will be useful navigating in the backcountry and planning overland routes. I'm happy to report that this motorcycle GPS seems to have all the major forest service roads I ride and I think it will be a fantastic tool for navigating both on and off road.
I hope you enjoy this first ride and these first impressions of the Garmin Zumo XT GPS unit. I'm very impressed with it so far and looking forward to putting it to the test. Make sure you're subscribed so you don't miss the future full Garmin Zumo XT review video!

I’m looking at this Garmin right now. Saw you had a review and I knew yours was the review I wanted to see the most.
I'm enjoying it so far
I noticed the sale on that unit this week and your mini review has just about pushed me to the edge on buying one. Nice!!!
I couldn't pass up the deal. I'm happy with it so far.
@@DorkintheRoad and now the price is back up to $500...
Not on RMATV as far as I can tell
There's a place called GPS City that still has it for $400
Thanks for the review man. Think I’m gonna go for it.
I recently picked one of these units up and tried using the USB connector run to my USB charger that's wired to the battery but after a bit, I kept getting a message stating the unit has lost external power. I chatted with support and they mentioned that the USB cord is not meant to continuously charge it. Not wanting to run another lead to the battery, I added a SAE splitter, a switch and wired a SAE connector to the XT's included power cable and that works great so far.
I've done the same. Originally connected it directly to my battery which I knew was an issue in the first place. Once my battery died I bought a new battery and added the sae connector to the end of the zumo xt motorcycle mount plug. Have an Sae cable with built in switch connected to battery.
Your off-road test will be interesting to see. 👍🏻
Me too. In the market for one but would like to hear your feedback
I am researching on Garmin Zumo XT because thinking going on long trip by Piaggio mp3 250IE & camping long the way to California and back to Texas!
Another great video, as usual. Thanks.
I just typed into my recently updated Garmin 660 Motorcycle GPS "Annapolis, MD" and apparently, Annapolis no longer exists and the GPS is sending me to "Accident MD", so what else am I going to be missing when on the road? I am very glad you did an overview/review as I was thinking of buying a new phone and skipping the Garmin all together.
On another note: I am suggesting some content for you to possibly create. Since Garmin thinks everyone are tech geeks they give a very limited how to sheet for all their products. It would be interesting for us grey haired non tech savvy folks to have Kindergarten "which end is up" video classes on the this Garmin XT, Garmin 770i, and basecamp.
Keep up the great content.
Been watching a few of your vids. I just ordered this yesterday from Amazon. So, now I see your vid om ot and see you got it on sale. I just checked and it is off sale now. So, oh well ! I'm kinda glad it isn't now. lol
I just Subbed your channel also. Like your content so far.
Thanks for posting about this Garmin Zùmo gizmo !!!
Take care and stay safe !!!
They were on sale for $399 so I have one on the way. Can't wait till riding season
I think you'll be very happy with it
I drink Diet Pepsi too! I wish it had voice recognition. It's so nice to say " My location to ..." and it just does everything.
That would be pretty awesome
That’s a nice unit! Garmin makes great gear.
Thank you for admiring my unit
@@DorkintheRoad What happens in the woods, stays in the woods. 😂
McLovin it!
@@DorkintheRoad😂😂
Motorcycle GPS are built for the elements and the mounts are designed to mitigate vibrations well enough to save solder and connections.
I'm thinking of putting this on my electric bike instead of a bike computer....your thoughts?
I want one, but I'm not ready to leap yet.
I think I shook my phone's camera to death back in May on my way to Sturgis. Just replace the phone last Friday. Probably won't use a bike dash mount for the phone anymore.
Great review, Any chance you’ll review the Garmin zūmo XT2? Thanks!
9:12 cool. i don't have a fuel gage, just a trip odometer.
Great video
Moving to Mexico, work there?
Do you have to have a program to download trails?
Are you still using this unit? Do you have any long term usage thoughts or feedback?
Good video
Hey Ben, Love the content. I have leaned tons from you as I have been getting started in dual sport riding. I have a future content suggestion unless I am the dork and missed it in your library. I would be interested in what you have to say about advanced GPS navigation. By that I mean beyond just the mapping available in the Garmin or smart phone such as route planning with BaseCamp, Gaia or OnX off road and exporting to the Garmin. I have the Garmin device itself down, and I sort of figured out BaseCamp but I have not yet been able to figure out Gaia exporting to Garmin, and it seems to have the best mapping for dual sport/adventure riding/moto camping. Thanks again for your hard work on this channel. I'm up in WA south of Seattle so maybe we'll bump at one of the PNW riding events.. Thx- -Al
USB does not show traffic... must use the garmin cable for that
3 years now and it’s still $399 🙄
The Adventure routing is useless. The problem is rarely navigation, but rather how hard it is to create a route or amend a route on the road. Have had Zumo’s, TomTom’s, Montana’s, and using phones, the Garmin’s are incredibly hard to create routes. They need to hire a UX Zsar who can make their shit usable. There is so much capability, but it’s useless with all the bloatware and terrible software.
Do you have it powered up from the usb port beside the power button on the back of it?
yes
@@DorkintheRoad ok thank you man. I have already ordered one but it will be a couple of weeks before I get it backorder of course because it went on sale o well. But is it still waterproof when you power it that way?
I think unless you submerge it it's probably fine. I feel good about mine behind the windscreen
You can buy a locking system from a few makers.
Lifetime maps ends
3 years after Garmin decides the device has reached its useful sales and discontinues.
I’m curious how good it is for green lanes and dirt roads . None of the reviews I’ve seen show or talk about this in any depth .
I'm eager to test that myself
They don't go into detail because they use the default Garmin map. Frig, google is more detailed in most areas.
With proper maps this Zumo works pretty good for a street gps.
The Rhino, eTrex, and Montana, are the rugged geocache gps. They can take abuse, and use USA and Russian satellites, so very accurate.
Is there a dust cover for the Zumo's usb? If not i would make sure to only use the usb power. To limit dust exposure.
Or source a usb cover, or even use tape.
Doesn’t run on 12v, software is crap and takes hours to download updates. One of the handlebar charge pins, (lower) just breaks. Good luck with that. My third and last Garmin.
I will never understand why people camp in those places. It’s basically a trailer park...and that is not usually synonymous with fun! Lol
Cause in the NE...its whats you got most of the time...
Temporarily out of stock!
True, but you can at least order now and lock in the sale price
I found a website called GPS City that still had it in stock at 4:00 p.m. today Eastern Time.
