Hi Richy hope your keeping well, just a bit of info re owners of the XT2 Zumo. You don't need the Drive app with the XT2 Zumo on your mobile just the Tread app . The export file is the .gpx1.1(Route,track,POI) once you have clicked on the file on your desktop it automatically goes to downloads and if you log onto your mobile app it will already be there. Hope this helps a few folk. Just finished our maps for France and Switzerland using the XT2 Zumo later this year and had no issues.
This is true ! Also be wary of loading other garmin apps on your apple phone … because they can hamper the way tread behaves !! Only use tread on your phone !

I use this and this was a very good simple to understand tutorial thanks. On your recent Morocco trip you had a route overlaying a track giving you options. Would love to see you do a tutorial on how to get this as so far I havent mastered it. Cheers
My Garmin required a separate download for Morocco; still didn't work and ended up using VERY basic google maps, but still got me down to the Sahara and back.
Many thanks for your video, I have struggle in the past to download the Myroute Routes onto my Garmin XT using the normal iphone and iMac. Now everything is straight forward however there is a “BUT’, the conversion and transfer does not like any more than 30 waypoints! It will automatically convert to the 30 waypoint maximum, so if you need more on a large route you have to split the route into two. Cheers
Great thanks, worked perfectly for a 14 day trip to the Pyrenees and Picos. I watched an earlier video where you said the Givi mount wasn't great for the Zumo due to vibration but I can't find the video. Assuming the handlebar mount is best? Cheers.
Hi Richy - There’s an easy way to add routing points, just use the mouse cursor above the existing route line and it’ll change the cursor to enable another point to be added between 2 existing points.
Yes, but that adds another waypoint which makes it think you want to go there *after* the previously anchored points instead of during the route. Thats why I pulled it into numerical order of the left bar..

I’ve been using MRA for a while and it’s a great software! I’ve noticed if I don’t include enough waypoints and there are other roads nearby, the XT may choose its own way to the next waypoint. So, I always add a couple points along the way. The other thing I like to do (maybe you included it another video) is I like to load the track overlay in the XT along with the route so I can make sure I take the exact route I planned.
Yes, I’ve noticed that, too. I also now use plenty of waypoints to keep her on track. I did the overlay thing but haven’t done that in a while. I might get that set up again. Thanks for reminding me! 👍
Hi Richy, genius!! I’m completely computer illiterate and even though my friend and I have done over a dozen European tours his Zumo and my Zumo XT despite having the same settings and avoidance’s never agree😂. I’ve just followed your instructions on the MyRouteplanner and planned our first days ride around Luxembourg in June. Even managed to save it to my memory card which allowed him to import the route to his older Zumo. Thanks for the brilliant tutorial. No longer will we get to a junction with me turning left and him turning right!!! Cheers “Exmouth Darlings on Tour” ps we are not an item 😂
@@RichyVida Will do, the proof of the pudding will be in mid June. Luxembourg, Rhine, Moselle and the Northern Black Forest from Devon. Keep the videos coming. Best wishes Simon
all was working fine and my Drive App is still linked to my Zumo XT, as i can send a destination etc, the Drive App says its received the route and will be sent to Zumo XT but doesn't send? any ideas gratefully received, if I use the cable to link my Zumo XT directly to my PC it works downloading the route from my Route App??
Newbie here…..you were doing the planning on the big screen (PC or Mac) and then you “headed over to the phone” and there it was on the phone. How did you do that?
Exactly. You have the app in your phone, and use the online website on your computer. When you open your app on your phone, all the work you did in your account (online) will also be in the app account 👍
Software? Just head over to MyRouteApp online and you’ll have everything you need. Zumo XT is a few years old, and now there’s an XT 2 unit, but it’s far from outdated. Lifetime updates, too.
Hi Richy, I tried to add a route to my Zumo XT exactly the way you showed in your video. All went great until I tried to send it from my phone on to the Zumo XT and then on the screen of my Zumo it says ' Saving item 1 of 1 to trip planner. Calculating 0% and freezes at that and won't progress beyond 0% 🤔 Any idea why it's not going onto my Zumo XT?
Could be that the start of your route (or very near the start) is a restricted area? Have you checked you’re up to date and maps installed correctly etc?
Was looking forward this vid Richy, is the Gold life time member a one off, or a yearly subscription? Nevertheless, thank you for another tip that will be very useful 👍
Cheers Rich, thought it was going to sort my issues I've had. However, MRA to Garmin the trip planner is still changing the route. But not in tracks!! Any suggestions 🤔
More shaping and waypoints! And try exporting .gpx1.1 as it will keep all your waypoints. The shaping points (teardrop) are route points, and waypoints (hand) are points not to be missed. If you do this, it’ll not go wrong 👍
Very informative, I've always wondered how to plan a route on the pc and export to my Garmin XT. On looking at the My Route App website there are various options on subscription i.e Basic, Silver, Gold & MRA Navigation Next. Which one should I use as per your tutorial ?
Very good concise instructions Richy BUT, (may have been covered below, but too many comments) Compare with Tomtom route, what if it's entirely different route to the Hero one, or if parts are in red that differ? What's the way forward then?...leave it on Tomtom route?...any advice from anyone welcome.
No, always revert to the HERE. You can tweak to suit when it comes to comparing. Once you’re happy - and if you’re a Gold Member - you can “expand waypoints” in the toolbox. This will put up to 200 waypoints along your planned route, to ensure it stays as such. Export to .gpx1.1 Route, Track, POI (NOT 1.0 as I said here) and that’s it.
@@RichyVida this is the description of the MRA site "In this file a distinction has been made between shaping points (soft points) and via points (difficult points). This tile has been tested on Garmin Zumo 3, 5 & XT."
It looked like the shaping points in MRA converted to stopovers in the XT. Export to the XT as v1.1 and you then get it correctly. If you want the way points as stopovers (I.e. compulsory points) then you can change them in MRA or in the XT. It feels like you're still scratching the surface as there's a lot more MRA and the XT can do.
Thanks Richy, great video as always. I've had MRA as basic level for years and not used it as Calimoto was the niche way to formulate routes, but was finding it wasn't keeping the route as I planned. Just upgraded to Gold now (it's £129 for lifetime now). Thanks for the tutorial. Hopefully I can use this (with a tweak or 2) on my older Garmin Zumo 595. Till I upgrade to the XT or XT2 in the future. I've found you can export the gpx file to the iMac, so hopefully I should be able to drag/drop the gpx file into the Garmin folder when I connect the Zumo 595 to the iMac. We shall see. Thanks again. Side note ... The drag and drop process for older Garmin's work perfectly. 😁
I have just tried to create a routeon my cellphone with the mra app and save it on my phone as gpx 1.1 and ssend it to the treas app on my phone. When synced to my Zumo XT 2 the XT2 asked to convert the route. Once converted it was not accurate. Is it possible to create a route on the phone with the MRA app and send it to my Zumo XT2 without a PC. I want to create routes whilst travelling without my Pc.
Yes just do the same but without the pc. Export to 1.1, send to drive (or tread) and done.. just easier on the big screen for planning. Make sure the 1.1 is Route, Track, POI
Thanks Richy! I'm planning a European tour in the summer and planning to get a zumo xt... But the routes we've planned have been using Google maps. Is there a way that you know of that I can share the route between Google maps and this website you used to then get it on the zumo, or will I have to plot the daily routes all again in the new website?
Export a .gpx from Google Maps (may have to be .kml from Google), save to your computer then import that file into MRA. Check to see if there are any discrepancies and correct as needed before you do the above into Zumo 👍
Thanks for the video. Do you have to use the mobile phone and Garmin Drive, or is this just the best way you have found it to work? I also have another question that i am hoping you might be able to help with, which is to do with MRA and multiple days. Could i email you the questions?
What is the track playing in t he background? Soooo good. And great tutorial. I have the BMW nav 6 so hopefully this will work for me too. Hope I don’t have to pay £100 for MRA membership…
When I use the 'surprise me' feature and save that map, I loose my ability to select HERE (MyRoute-app/Garmin) . Any suggestions? It saves in my routes, but I can't figure out how to get the HERE (MyRoute-app/Garmin) selected as when I am creating a route.
Great vid richy but ive got the xt2 and at first glance it looks ok but if you follow the route it go out, tried several things but i cant get the bloody thing to work🤣
i have paid for life long gold , followed the very helpful tutorial and successfully downloaded routes to my zumo xt but when i select a route in the trip planner i get the message "cannot calculate route" all advice greatly appreciated
Usually that means there’s a reason it can’t calculate. You may be telling it to go somewhere where you’ve also told it not to go? Add many waypoints, export to .gpx1.1
What settings do you have on the XT? Make sure you export as .gpx1.1 Route, Track, POI (NOT 1.0 like I said here) and as you’re a Gold member, you can “expand waypoints” in toolbox. This will add up to 200 waypoints to your route, helping to keep it intact.
@@RichyVida hi doing a route from Avignon ,France to Cuneo in italy , got it all set up on mra just nice ,expanded waypoints with toolkit (,put 10 in ) comes across from laptop to phone no problem . On mra its 294.51 miles , duration 8 hours 53 mins with 10 way points the route is up in the mountains away from the coast but when its downloaded to the xt it changes to 394 miles 11 hours 42 mins and takes me down to the coast and all over the place !!!! and looks nothing like the route on mra ??? tried various settings on the xt but makes no difference ? could it be seasonal road closures for winter snow etc ? what settings would you recomend for the xt , done loads of other touring routes with no problems , just this particular one it just does not seem to like ???
Make your route, once happy, expand waypoints up to 200. Then export to 1.1 Route, Track, POI. Try that, check mileage etc in MRA. Once imported, see if the XT shows the same.. let me know 👍
it makes no difference, doing a route over the stelvio into switzerland and clicked "disable seasonal closures " in the tool kit on MRA as the roads/ mountain passes will be open in June!!!! and it all looks good on MRA but when it goes on to the XT , the garmin completely ignores the Map from MRA and send you round in loops due to seasonal road closures , is there any way to disarm this on the zumo and to do as its told by MRA
Exactly how I do it Richy except I add a lot more waypoints or it'll go wrong. For eg I've just done a route from Alfreton to Ambleside with 29 waypoints and uploaded it to the xt. It added 12 miles to the route and didn't follow the route exactly. The same route with 59 waypoints is exactly the route I planned. The xt will split it into 2 routes as it will only allow 29 waypoints/shaping points but its no problem as it will continue the whole route when you start it. Of course I could have a conflict between the settings on my xt and the settings on my route app (don't think I have though I'm open to suggestions). Great video mate
Yes. More waypoints. “Expand waypoints” (Gold Member) up to 200, then export .gpx1.1 Route, Track, POI.. works perfectly, every time. All my a Morocco trip was done this way
Spot on mate that’s exactly how I do it can’t go wrong that way. It’s a learning curve isn’t it. Great channel keep up the good work often see you around when we’re training new riders
Great tutorial as always BUT.....i have the XT2 and seems when i follow your process to the download to the drive app its not recognising a GPX file...any thoughts ? Garmin online support via chat say theres no support for the XT2...great hey !!!
“No support” for their newest unit?! What the?! You followed this exactly? Try the .gpx1.1 and let me know. I’m sure 99.99999% that this will be exactly the same for XT/XT2
Well, i think its sorted though yet to test it out. I called Gamin and they said on the XT2 the app needed is TREADS and not DRIVE which does seem to have worked . lets see how I get on next weekend@@RichyVida
I subscribed as a Gold member. I looked all over for the link to import but could not find it. I have a trip mapped out going from North Carolina to Nova Scotia. It would be nice to import them into MRA.
If you had the Drive app on your computer (not sure that’s possible) as that’s where you send it to before it can go to the Zumo. If you just think of the computer as the place you make the route, then open your phone app, it’ll be sat there in the same account, then just send from there to Drive, and bounce on to Zumo
Well, 1.0 is Route, Track & POI. And is the original method. You can use the newer method of 1.1 which enables more shaping points (as far as I can tell, this is the only plus, but not found it to give any advantage)
You didn’t show the track. I use tracks. On my phone I create a route with Gaia, export .gpx file to a folder in my phone, convert route to track online with GPS Visualizer, save file to phone. Import both track and route into Garmin Explore. This is on a Zumo XT 2 and a Tread Basic.

Been using this method from day one of owning the XT, but always used Google maps on MRA and not with HERE and I'm sure that's where it used to change the route when exported, that's 100% why we did the track convert to trip, I'll try this way next time cheers Rich.
Just a note - If you have updated to the latest Zumo XT Firmware/Software you will need to save as .gpx 1.2 (Route, Track, POI) rather than 1.0. I found that 1.0 was messing up the GPX routes and sending me on different routes to the ones I had planned
About the transfer to Garmin. I use an older model. If you connect the garmin directly to your pc/laptop you can transfer the routes to the device without using your phone.. #toptip
I toyed with the idea of getting an XT2 but as with all items of it's type, it's expensive. Instead I've gone down a new route, a tablet with maps downloaded to it. Great for off road use, and so versatile should you need to change/look at something while on the road. Very different from the TomTom I've had for many years, but slowing getting the hang of it..

Yes, I’ve noticed that, too. I also now use plenty of waypoints to keep her on track.
I did the overlay thing but haven’t done that in a while. I might get that set up again. Thanks for reminding me! 👍
App downloaded and lifetime subscription done. Thank you again. I can't wait to try it out
Good move. It’s a doddle! Shout up if ya need any advise with it 👍
Hi Richy, genius!!
Excellent! Let me know how it goes. “Not an item” 😂😂😂
The XT doesn’t receive anything or Drive won’t send?
Newbie here…..you were doing the planning on the big screen (PC or Mac) and then you “headed over to the phone” and there it was on the phone. How did you do that?
You have the APP on both devices. Create a route within your account on either device and it will automatically be visible on the other device. 👍
Exactly. You have the app in your phone, and use the online website on your computer. When you open your app on your phone, all the work you did in your account (online) will also be in the app account 👍
@@RichyVida Thank you, Richy
Can't find the software Route Lab for Linux OS or for my web browser. Garmin Sumo XT seems to be outdated.....
Correct me if I'm wrong, tnx.
Calculating 0% and freezes at that and won't progress beyond 0% 🤔
Any idea why it's not going onto my Zumo XT?
Could be that the start of your route (or very near the start) is a restricted area? Have you checked you’re up to date and maps installed correctly etc?
Was looking forward this vid Richy, is the Gold life time member a one off, or a yearly subscription? Nevertheless, thank you for another tip that will be very useful 👍
‘Lifetime’ kind of answers your question there, Denis! 👍
Will the route give you a turn by turn directions just like google maps would?
Thanks for the video!
Of course.
Very informative, I've always wondered how to plan a route on the pc and export to my Garmin XT.
On looking at the My Route App website there are various options on subscription i.e Basic, Silver, Gold & MRA Navigation Next. Which one should I use as per your tutorial ?
Gold, is lifetime and full. Not sure the Nav Next is worth it as you’re using the Zumo. But defo recommend getting Gold membership 👍
Hello Rich. Does this work with all Garmin devices including the BMW Navigator 6 ?
I would think so, yes.
@@RichyVida Thanks Richy...I've had to write all this down.
HI! but why don't you use the gpx 1.2 format which is the one that the MRA team released specifically for the zumo xt?
🤔 really? I’ve never used 1.2? How does it differ to 1.1? (I don’t use 1.0 anymore)
@@RichyVida this is the description of the MRA site
"In this file a distinction has been made between shaping points (soft points) and via points (difficult points). This tile has been tested on
Garmin Zumo 3, 5 & XT."
PRICELESS INFORMATION, made it so easy
It really IS easy. It seems complicated on the face of it, but genuinely, piece of cake!
@@RichyVida it is when someone makes it easy for us 🙏
It looked like the shaping points in MRA converted to stopovers in the XT.
Can MRA be used on a ipad and xfer to garmin XT or does it require a PC
Its web based so can’t see why not.
Why not use Garmin Bascamp to plan the route, and save as a .gpx file? This can then be sent to your 'device' as required.
BC is far too complicated (I find) and not user friendly
Hi Rich, can I ask why you don’t use basecamp?
Admittedly it’s a bit clunky and freezes now and then but got use to it.
Far too much hassle..
@@RichyVida have since made the change, hopefully no more faff. Cheers Rich.
Thanks for the video. Do you have to use the mobile phone and Garmin Drive, or is this just the best way you have found it to work?
I also have another question that i am hoping you might be able to help with, which is to do with MRA and multiple days. Could i email you the questions?
Please do; rich@wildbadtouring.com
@@RichyVida sent could be in your junk. 👍🏻
What is the track playing in t he background? Soooo good. And great tutorial. I have the BMW nav 6 so hopefully this will work for me too. Hope I don’t have to pay £100 for MRA membership…
Should work, but not sure what’s available as a free user?
Hi mate. New to this unit. Can they do CarPlay etc with the phone synced or are they only about Garmin maps ?
No Carplay. It does have all your media, so it’ll pull your Spotify/AppleMusic etc from your phone.
When I use the 'surprise me' feature and save that map, I loose my ability to select HERE (MyRoute-app/Garmin) . Any suggestions? It saves in my routes, but I can't figure out how to get the HERE (MyRoute-app/Garmin) selected as when I am creating a route.
Are you a Gold member?
@@RichyVida yes
Great videos mate👍.
As a newbie with bike SatNavs, is Garmin better than TomTom - bit clueless, any advice appreciated
I can’t comment, Steve as have never used a TomTom.
@@RichyVida ok thanks👍
Great vid richy but ive got the xt2 and at first glance it looks ok but if you follow the route it go out, tried several things but i cant get the bloody thing to work🤣
Add more waypoints, export to .gpx1.1
Same method as I use, by far the easiest route planning app to use with the XT👍
And a pleasure to use 👍
@@RichyVida Anything is better than Basecamp😉👍
i have paid for life long gold , followed the very helpful tutorial and successfully downloaded routes to my zumo xt but when i select a route in the trip planner i get the message "cannot calculate route" all advice greatly appreciated
Usually that means there’s a reason it can’t calculate. You may be telling it to go somewhere where you’ve also told it not to go? Add many waypoints, export to .gpx1.1
Very useful and well explained tutorial, thank you.
Hi great info and seems like the way to go
Will this work with a Garmin Zumo660 do you know?
Yes I’m sure it will
done a route (gold member) on my lap top but when i down load from phone to zumo xt it puts a different route on the xt ? any ideas?thanks alot
Once imported, see if the XT shows the same.. let me know 👍
@@RichyVida will do cheers
it makes no difference, doing a route over the stelvio into switzerland and clicked "disable seasonal closures " in the tool kit on MRA as the roads/ mountain passes will be open in June!!!! and it all looks good on MRA but when it goes on to the XT , the garmin completely ignores the Map from MRA and send you round in loops due to seasonal road closures , is there any way to disarm this on the zumo and to do as its told by MRA
Needs updating as I do it a bit diff now 👍
Adding more waypoints?
@@RichyVida , I have also an XT and it does the same, the Garmin Drive opens but no gpx fil....
Have you sent it to Drive? It won’t be there without sending it from MRA.
Well, i think its sorted though yet to test it out. I called Gamin and they said on the XT2 the app needed is TREADS and not DRIVE which does seem to have worked . lets see how I get on next weekend@@RichyVida
Question can i create routes on app instead of computer? Thanks
Yes of course. Just easier in a big screen.
i have done all that but i get the message cannot calculate route
Is it possible to import maps from Garmin Basecamp into MRA?
Yes you can import several map files
I subscribed as a Gold member. I looked all over for the link to import but could not find it. I have a trip mapped out going from North Carolina to Nova
Scotia. It would be nice to import them into MRA.
I found it! Thank you for turning me on to this great program!
It’s great, eh? I love it
well i am having problems when downloading to zumo i am only getting the tracks and not the trip even thou i followed your tutoral 😢
Export as .gpx1.1 Route, Track, POI.. try that and let me know
Hi mate, what is the difference between the gpx file options?
It’s the information that gets carried across. I now use .gpx1.1 as it carries every waypoint across. Translates perfectly.
Rich can you send route from computer to Garmin or is it easier via the phone Cheers Glenn.(Keep up the great work)
If you had the Drive app on your computer (not sure that’s possible) as that’s where you send it to before it can go to the Zumo.
If you just think of the computer as the place you make the route, then open your phone app, it’ll be sat there in the same account, then just send from there to Drive, and bounce on to Zumo
Just seeing this Richy. You can drag the black line over like Google maps and will insert a way point for you without searching for it
Hey Richy, why do you use gpx 1.0 route track poi? I still to this day confuse myself with which one to use….
Well, 1.0 is Route, Track & POI. And is the original method. You can use the newer method of 1.1 which enables more shaping points (as far as I can tell, this is the only plus, but not found it to give any advantage)
@@RichyVida thanks boss
Brilliant cheers Rich..!!
Hi Rich, would Garmin Base Camp not be easier to use ?
Definitely not
Thanks for the reply , I think I have sorted it
Garmin Basecamp that supports Garmin XT unit will do same thing FREE and as many waypoints as you like!
Cheers Ricky looking to get one of these on the new bike so geeking out on it before hand as you do lmao
😂
Oh yes, that’s exactly what I do, too! If I’m buying something I totally geek out for weeks beforehand! Haha
@@RichyVida yea allways good to know the in and out of somthing your getting come on we're you.going this year can't wait to see think I might of seen a hint maybe
did you mean to say choose download format gpx 1.1 (track, POI) file? I hope you're enjoying your travels mate. Are you still using my route app and your zumo XT? Kind regards, Lewis
Yes still using both. Great travel companions. No, I meant 1.0 (at the time), but now use 1.1
@@RichyVida what's the difference? How come you're now using 1.1? Maybe I'll understand more once I've got MRA
1.1 keeps all your waypoints intact. You can expand up to 200 waypoints to shape the trip. 1.1 will keep all that info 👍
@RichyVida cheers mate! Safe riding 😀
Great tutorial, that’s exactly the way I use it.
Hi Rich , will this work with Bmw nav 6 ? regards Peter
I believe so, as it’s the same unit. Albeit with BMW’s version of the software. I’d be interested to hear how you get on..
Hi Rich I will let you know , Peter
MRA is the best route planner IMO, especially if you purchase the lifetime gold when it’s on discount😎👍
Totally agree! It’s a pleasure to use.
Good Vid Richy ✊
I've spent a month trying to sort my route out for the elephant rally. pulling my hair out and kicking the cat. I had the route on MRA but couldn't work that out. I wonder if my hair will grow back. PS, we aint got a cat
Haha 😜
Been using this method from day one of owning the XT, but always used Google maps on MRA and not with HERE and I'm sure that's where it used to change the route when exported, that's 100% why we did the track convert to trip, I'll try this way next time cheers Rich.
Yes that’s the thing, Al. HERE is what Garmin use so it’s exact.
I asked and I got! Thanks Rich much appreciated
Any time!
Just a note - If you have updated to the latest Zumo XT Firmware/Software you will need to save as .gpx 1.2 (Route, Track, POI) rather than 1.0.
I found that 1.0 was messing up the GPX routes and sending me on different routes to the ones I had planned
Yes, need to update this (again). I used 1.1 for Morocco and it was perfect. Will also have a look at 1.2. Cheers
About the transfer to Garmin. I use an older model. If you connect the garmin directly to your pc/laptop you can transfer the routes to the device without using your phone.. #toptip
Thank you very much Richy, top man
I toyed with the idea of getting an XT2 but as with all items of it's type, it's expensive. Instead I've gone down a new route, a tablet with maps downloaded to it. Great for off road use, and so versatile should you need to change/look at something while on the road.
Very different from the TomTom I've had for many years, but slowing getting the hang of it..
Thanks very much!!! Helps alot!
Great tutorial
does this work on a mac
That’s what I use.
