    Thanks for the review of the XT2. Since you mentioned the split keyboard issues on the XT, if you tap the little globe icon in the lower right when in keyboard view (upper right in split-screen), you can toggle between split keyboard and single screen. I'll bet the XT2 does the same thing as I see the globe icon on the new interface as well. Update: saw you corrected that from when you originally posted yesterday!😉

    Nice in-depth product review, as always. Based on your review I bought an XT1 a year ago, and watched your Basecamp tutorials. I've been very pleased with the XT1. Basecamp doesn't seem to be as efficient as Google Maps in constucting routes, so I construct the route in Google first, then "force" Basecamp to plot the same route, by inserting waypoints (sometimes latitude/longitude coordinates to create markers from Google). Then I use the cool method that you describe in this video and your tutorial in which you create separate routes for each day : Day 1, Day 2, etc. Then I export the routes to my XT1 and it works great ! The new features of the XT2, like the bigger/brighter screen, USB C port, etc are nice, and I would certainly choose it over the XT1 , BUT for me personally, those features are not significant enough to justify the cost of upgrading to the XT2. Thanks again for the review

    I'll also mention that the original XT cradle has a power supply in the cord that steps the motorcycle 12V power down to 5V (USB voltage) for the XT. The cradle for the XT2 does not have that step down power supply, and accepts the 12V power from wherever you have it tapped into. Other sites have confirmed that the 12V cradle will charge the Zumo XT2 while riding and in operation, but the XT cradle may not keep up. Maybe that was the cause of your initial charging problems?

    Just back from a two week, 5,500km ride using the XT2 to navigate outback Australia, and I can report with conviction, the XT2 is buggy and unreliable. The touch screen constantly stopped working, often requiring repeated hard resets, to work, if it all. Fortunately a mate had his Montana to get us out of remote spot. For reference, the XT2 was powered directly from the battery on a DR650 running the latest software updates.

    The Garmin XT is not compatioble with the XT2 mount if you plan to sell the XT. Charging the XT2 takes for ever. The XT2 needs to be on and in standby to charge with the USB cable.

    The Connector on the XT1 is a USB Mini - B Thanks for the review. The keyboard issue would frustrate me on the XT1. Can you explore more why Basecamp can't be used for routing on the XT2? I've got hundreds of Basecamp routes and am quite proficient in its use.

    Off Topic: The Garmin Nav5 in the BMW motorcycles is a $900 option. They have way too many issues with ghost pressing on the screen, not charging, not responding, etc.
    At least, they stand behind their products for replacement / repair / refurbished units.
    It only takes 2 screens on the XT1 for a keyboard? The Nav5 takes several...

    Day 2 of ownership of my XT2 it died. It went through a series “lost satellite” messages and random “updating software” messages while cruising at 70 mph. After shutting it down with the power switch it would not power up. The online help suggested holding the power button for 40 seconds. It came back on and seemed normal for a few weeks. I went on an ADV ride and it was back to its old rebooting tricks😡.
    I spoke to Garmin on the phone. I begged them to send me an XT in exchange for the XT2. Instead I was told that it’s a known software glitch and was walked through the factory reset. I was also told to NOT install any updates until I hear from them. It worked just fine.
    A few weeks later they said to update it. I did and it died again😡 Only once but that’s once too many.
    At this point I would gladly swap the XT2 for an XT. I’m sure they’ll get the bugs worked out in a year or two but in the meantime I don’t recommend the XT2. You will become a beta tester.

    I've used Garmin in many aircraft I've owned and a couple of motorcycles. I got turned off to Garmin when I upgraded databases on two motorcycle gps units only to be told the database would not fit on my unit after purchase.
    I switched to TomTom Rider at that point. It was a little frustrating at first learning a new system but will never go back. TomTom has WiFi capability and connects to your phone App
    for traffic avoidance (much like Google Maps) which has been very helpful on long trips. Does Garmin have Live Traffic / Road Closure Avoidance ??
    There have been a number of times I'm in the middle of nowhere and hit a road closure and TomTom has already identified the closure and calculated an alternative route.

    • @mimimmimmimim
      @mimimmimmimim ปีที่แล้ว

      The Garmin Zumo XT I use does that if you want to be warned of traffic issues. It uses it's connection with the mobile phone to access the data from the Internet. Guess it's doing that via the Drive app on the mobile.

    Have watched many of your videos. Find your school teacher style ok, but you should do more homework before making reviews. From the videos watched, you often state incorrect info. This one in particular was almost comical that you had not even set the thing up before trying to use it on camera. Then you state the full screen keyboard as being "worthy of the extra $100" when the old XT also has a full screen keyboard exactly like the XT2. (It is just a matter of setting the option of "Full or Split Screen" up in your specs before using!)

    • @SmittyAZ

      I agree this review was terrible imo. He should have read the new manual first and gone through all the settings, like bluetooth volume, at his desk before testing it on the road. Also, he makes alot of mental errors like turning the wrong way or ignoring what the Garmin says to do. I base this on not just this video but many of his recent ones. Probably should hang up the helmet for good and go fishing.

    • @moorgoon
      @moorgoon ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think Cruiseman does many things like the everyday person - makes the mistake like we do, so his errors would be ours and we learn from him. I have only 1 friend who completely reads the entire manuals prior to using out of the box, he is in the minority! I do believe Cruiseman is challenged by GPS’s (who isn’t) as I’m able to use the GoldWing gps and have only minor issues with it - our fearless leader gave up on it almost immediately. I will miss the Honda Trip planner as it was great for small day rides (simple).

    Strangely I've had that same "woww I didn't leave it on, why did it's battery get depleted?" issue twice in the last two month.
    On the first issue, I don't know how long it was fully empty. At first I even thought the device was broken.
    Last week I noticed that my mobile notifications somehow echoed around somewhere. I didn't take it seriously cause I was tired.
    Only later, by chance, noticed a warmness when I was looking for something inside my backpack.
    The Zumo XT was on, inside its hardcase and it was burning hot.
    So It was Zumo XT, repeating the mobile phone's notifications :)
    Anyways, in that particular hardcase the device never did turn itself on, not once.
    Of course having your battery depleted and especially, leaving it fully empty for a long time is never a good practice for the battery life.
    Really strange... I'm seriously beginning to question applying the firmware updates lately...
    By the way. I do not agree with you, on the change of the positioning of the usb port.
    The new positioning doesn't allow the device to stay upright on the table when connected to the computer / or being charged.
    And the Micro SD slot? How many times did you remove a card from that slot? I only installed one when I bought the unit. And didn't even remove the lid once.

    • @mimimmimmimim
      @mimimmimmimim ปีที่แล้ว

      Fighting the fight is no longer an option. One cannot stick it to the man anymore. But one can find one's own way.
      I always trusted Zumo XT cause it was meant for one thing. I needed it to be dependable. I paid the device to be a dependable assistant to me while I was on the ride.
      And time has proven me wrong. Many times now. A device that's only job is to navigate, should not have put me to wrong destinations. All my waypoints made before a certain date shows a certain displacement. Has the earth changed its location under the GPS satellites? Firmware updates are meant to fix things. I'm a computer engineer. I know how this game is run.
      I'm already on the lookout for buying a water resistant mobile phone in order to move to Android apps as navigation.
      The Garmin Zumo XT is still being sold for 1000 USD in where I live. Who knows how much XT2 is going to be sold for.
      I can buy an industrial Samsung Xcover Pro for 300 USD.
      It won't need the problematic Drive / Thread apps on another mobile device.
      Yes many times Drive app doesn't work properly and it doesn't event let me share destinations from other apps now. Also it also causes problems with other applications pairing with their bluetooth devices.
      It won't cut off my music for navigation instructions as Zumo XT does. It won't have noticable delays when talking on the phone.
      And most certainly it probaly won't suspiciously and unexpectedly die after a firmware update.
      All the maps (paid / or free) are always up-to-date.
      There're several widely used apps for motorcycle navigation on the "fully deployed" Android.
      And all the software and technology will be up-to-date most importantly.
      And finally I won't be paying premium for laggy 4-year-old hardware.

I saved each day's rice in Tread and it is seamlesslessly in the XT2 . I use Explore in the XT2 to choose each day's ride. My Android stays in my pocket when I ride, and I rely on the Garmin. It works great for playing music. I have it paired to my Schuberth C5 with the SC2 communication system. The SC2 utilizes voice commands.

    On the XT2 do you NEED to add off road maps? the device won't recognize all the nearby forest service roads.

    Thanks for the XT2 review. I have the XT1 and the keyboard split is a pain; I will be upgrading to the XT2. I'm glad Garmin moved the charging port and micro sd slot to the bottom. For me, Garmin changing to the Type C port and the change to the micro sd slot are just bonuses. Prayers Flying for safe travels

    Just upgraded to the Garmin XT2 from the original XT. As a quick first observation, I didn’t see the History Channel points of interest icon on the XT2 that was on the XT. Please tell me I just missed it and it’s there. I really liked that feature. I’ll look again! 😉

    i see in the video one shot of the interior of your glove box. do you keep your phone in there accessing apple car play? asking because i've never seen you drill a hole in the glove box to extend the goldwing usb1 to the handlebars. i did it recently and really like having access to the phone outside the box

    Hi Cruiseman. I have the same setup as you. Sena headset, Carlinkit wireless CarPlay, 2024 Honda Goldwing Tour DCT. I want to get this X2 Zumo from Garmin. I am curious. Are you able to pair all this up with your phone using the Carlinkit and wireless CarPlay with your zumo? What do you pair your zumo to? The bike or the phone? Or both? Any advise would be appreciated.

    • @cruisemansgarage
      @cruisemansgarage  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The Carlinkit is paired to your phone. Do not pair the phone to your Goldwing or the Zumo. Pair the Sena to the Goldwing using Mobile Phone Pairing and to the Zumo using GPS pairing.

    • @cruisemansgarage
      @cruisemansgarage  ปีที่แล้ว

      The Nav on the bike is better suited for car use, not a motorcycle. It is difficult to plan multi-day rides and getting routes loaded into it is difficult.

    Not a great review because you are making commission from sales 😢. You did not mention any great functions off road ect that any other basic sat navigation can do. All sat navs have crap batteries which won't change until people complain. Often the chip set is very poor like on the tom tom slower than a zx spectrum. I really want a motorbike sat Nat but nothing is easy like Google maps.

    Hell of video--was considering the XT2, now I'm not so sure. You like the interface, I think it's clunky and cartoonish. Yes there are some helpful features, but they're awkward to get to and take time to learn. For all of the just plain get from me from A to B, Google maps works better and looks better. I've used top of the line Gamin GPSs and Rand McNally's side by side on thousand plus mile trips and while the Rand doesn't have the depth of features, the ones you really need, and especially the one you need NOW, are much easier and faster to get to (as opposed to digging down into a layered menu system). Let's stop kidding ourselves about User Interfaces too--our phones have the best ones and ALL of the GPS interfaces simply don't compare in terms of useability/intuitiveness--they're not even close. Until they catch up with Phone interfaces, using them is a sacrifice. Two other points I picked up from watch your excellent video: so glad I bought a BMW and twice as glad I left Texas 9 years ago!!!
