  • Does twice the cost equal twice the performance? Tune in as I discuss my experience with the $500 Scorpion EXO-R1 Air Carbon and the $1,000 Arai Corsair X!
    Two quick edits: The R1 is not FIM homologated in the retail version; it is for Quartararo, however. (www.frhp.org/c...)
    Also, there are different sizes in pads available for the R1 Air for a perfect fit.

    Even tho they both pass the same standards, Arais results are the top of the top, there are helmets sent in by customers where they hit a pole and impaled themselves on it and survived without any consequences. I love the shape and looks of the scorpion, same as AGVs, but honestly, I would allways pay a premium for the best when it comes to my safety. Own an Arai Quantic, first helmet with the new ECE 22.06 standard.

    Thank you. I actually own a Shoei X-14 and then I felt like I upgraded to the Arai Corsair-X last year. This year I am looking at the Scorpion EXO-R1 and have to say it has caught my eye. I tried one on at the MotoGP race at COTA and was really impressed with those adjustable air cheeks were a very cool idea. It seems you get a lot for about half the price. The small size is FIM too besides also ECE rated, so technically the Medium should be too since the same shell. Also the EXO-R1 AIR FABIO QUARTARARO MONSTER REPLICA would match my 21 Kawasaki ZX-10R KRT edition, lol.

    If I recall correctly the break away of certain parts of a helmet where it can affect the efficacy of the helmet in an RTC or off has been incorporated into the new ECE 22.06 standard. I know that certain other manufacturers have already incorporated break away spoilers on some of their helmets.

    You should try Aria Regent-X. Corsair is for the track day. If it's day to day ride, I think Regent-X can beat Scorpion. I am confident to say that, because I have both. Regent-X is lighter and cheaper than Corsair and in the same price range as the Scorpion. Not to mention Aria passed SNELL, Scorpion didn't.

    • @mototigress
      @mototigress  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks for the suggestion! Admittedly, one of the reasons I went up into the Corsair is that I would like to get into track days in the next year or so, and I figured it would be nice to have some familiarity in the helmet which I would be taking to the track. My boyfriend has the Regent and I have had it in hand, but have not ridden it as we wear different sizes. I'd be interested to test one though!

    I’d like to try a scorpion but they are hard to find in my part of the world. I rock an AGV K5, which I really rated…until I shaved my beard off and realised just how much air that helmet lets in haha. As a current Arai RX-Q helmet that I love, I wanted to comment that I also love.. the Scorpion Exo R1 air Halley edition.
    I think your review was very thorough and agree with your points. Only thing I’d mention is that additional graphics for the R1 can be ordered from the EU market (as I did). In fact, I looked at Arai’s entire lineup and couldn’t find any graphic I really liked as much as my current one nor one that matched my Dainese jacket/pants. This is where Scorpion hit a home run. Several of their graphics I loved and three of them were great matches for my bike and gear.
    Hope I never have to put any of these helmets to a crash test but I feel very safe in either of these lids.
    A few things I particularly like about each:
    Arai: visor vents, additional vent options, legendary craftsmanship.
    Scorpion: air bladder, neck roll, lighter weight, graphics choices, pin lock, value.
    In all, I’m happy to make the transition to the Scorpion. My wife went from a Shoei to a Scorpion and the things she mentioned she likes about hers are the fit, graphics, and low noise level.
    Great review and I look forward to more of your videos!

  • @quikboarder93
    @quikboarder93 ปีที่แล้ว

    You can’t really take the weight at face value. The center of gravity is lower on the Arai than most other brands, so you don’t feel the weight nearly as much.
    You can have a helmet that’s lighter, but if the weight is all up top, it will feel heavier when it’s on your head.
    Also, the Corsair is designed to be used more in a tuck position since it’s a race helmet. For your bike that puts you more in an upright position, you likely would have been better off in a Regent or Defiant/Contour.
    We had a customer who put a dent in a metal gas tank with his head during a wreck and did not have even have a concussion in the Arai.
    Not sure if the Scorpion would have been as effective with its single density EPS liner. I think a couple of them have two densities, but it’s just not comparable to Arai’s 4 density EPS impact liner.
    The Scorpion helmet will also continue to pack out after break in, meaning you can only get 3-5 years out of it. The Arai has a composite polystyrene that will not pack out after break in, so you can get 8-10 years out of them depending on when it was manufactured (date stamp is on the D rings, polystyrene starts to get brittle around the 10 year mark, so don’t use it past that).
    Don’t get me wrong, Scorpion makes some seriously good helmets for the price. They’re just not really comparable to the Arai.

    • @mototigress
      @mototigress  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      As honest as I can be: while I haven’t ridden one, I tried one on for about 20 minutes at Cycle Gear. The fit is not for me (since it is a long oval shape) but I think it is at least priced somewhat accordingly for the quality. The drop down visor on the three that I tried on in store had poor optical quality with a “wave” in the central part of the vision. Not sure if that was a fluke but I tried three different helmets (two smalls and a medium) and they all had that same optical issue. I’ll leave it to a long oval-headed Icon owner to chime in for an accurate assessment!

  • @DG-ss1gc

    I’d say my Corsair x is my loudest helmet my scorpion r420 is second, my Roof Desmo is my go to helmet despite it being for a round head and having a slight hotspot, it’s quiet and it’s dual homologated , which I don’t know if any other modular helmets that are safety tested in both closed and open (what they call “jet” configuration)
    I like riding with my Desmo in jet mode slower speed.
    Arai is correct about the egg shape that’s basic 8th grade physical science.
    I have heard they won’t do drop down visors because it compromises the safety.
    I think testing is not as relevant as crash data , I wish we had longitudes patient data post crash for all the helmets.
    If we ever go to single payer (ha fat chance since it’s so radical it will make a life long ECU social democrat blush) there would be huge advantages in data available for safety.

  • @peytonhibdon7659
    @peytonhibdon7659 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Quick update here. Yes you can inexpensively and completely customize the interior of the Scorpion by utilizing the thicker and thinner pads from other sizes. Weak point is their charts to do so is equal to their ability to take pictures of their lids. Abysmal unfortunately. Poor man's X whatever imo. Just ordered my second and will add cheek pads from a small because I love a vise like fit

      Both. The Scorpion Exo-R1 is the only helmet in this price point that is FIM homologated, which is the strictest safety standard out there. It's what is used in MotoGP (Fabio Quartararo wears the Exo-R1). FIM blows Snell, DOT, and ECE out of the water in terms of safety standards. This is the main reason why I chose my Exo-R1. There are not many FIM helmets on the market, and the ones that are cost twice the price. You can feel safe with either of these two options!
