Arai Motorcycle Helmet Impact and Penetration Testing

  • I toured the Arai factory in Omiya, Japan to see the strength of their helmets measured in harsh testing.
The impact testing first shows the G force transferred to the head from only 30cm off the ground onto a piece of soft, flat wood. 346 G is the result and enough to hurt someone believe it or not.
Then we put a helmet on the headform and dropped it from 3.2 meters on to a steel anvil with a curved head on it, then a second time impacting the same spot from 2.5 meters. The result: 187 G and 181 G respectively. This is really impressive performance and shows how even in a second strike the helmet will protect the wearer well. The Snell M2020 standard allows for 275 G to be measured in this test and the Arai helmet is well under that.
Next we pushed the helmet to it's limit raising it 5 meters off the anvil to achieve a speed of 9.8 meters per second. This is the test normally done on carbon fiber helmets specially made for Formula 1 racecar pilots. It's a much more brutal test and one that a fiberglass helmet like this shouldn't pass... but the Arai helmets will! It measured just over 200 Gs.
Next come the penetration tests where a tapered spike is dropped on to the top of the helmet to see if it will punch through. Even at a height of 4 meters the helmet won the day.
Arai makes the safest helmets on the market. That's all I can say after seeing these tests. Yes it's true most riders will never see impact velocities this severe... but what if you do? Would you bet your life on it by wearing a lesser helmet or buy yourself some brain insurance and have a "more enjoyable crash" as Brian Weston puts it in the video?

Oh wow! Dave three of my friends have been saved by Arai helmets in serious crashes. The first thing I did when I met Mr. Michio Arai was to thank him for building such excellent head protection.
I'm glad to hear you're alright too.

I own two Arai helmets and two Shoei helmets along with about 20 others from many different brands.
All of them offer good protection in a crash but if I got to choose which was on my head before a crash I would pick one of my Arais or Shoeis. I rank them very close to each other and think they’re worth every penny.
I have a really good Klim Krios Pro that I hold in high regard as well because it uses Koroyd instead of EPS foam inside which is claimed to absorb energy up to 48% better. That claim hasn’t yet been independently verified but I’m hopeful it’s true. Someday I’d like to see Koroyd in an Arai or Shoei helmet.

The truth is all properly certified helmets protect people's heads to one degree or another regardless of whether they're DOT, Snell, ECE, FIM, or whatever else. The way they protect does vary and some protect better from specific types of impacts than others do. It's all about which philosophy you personally believe works best for the type of riding you do.
I usually ride off-road or adventure so I prefer a Snell rated helmet to protect me from rocks and branches potentially impacting and punching through my helmet due to the stiffer and harder shell. I believe a DOT or ECE helmet would protect me against those things too, but maybe not quite to the same level. Having said that, if I rode primarily at lower speeds on road in a city environment the ECE system is slightly more effective than Snell from the data I've seen. FIM is best on the race track at high speed, but so is Snell. In reality at very high speed no helmet will save your life because of the damage your body will take.
Lately I've noticed people getting too caught up in trying to pick which is the best certification overall, when I think they should be considering first which certification is best suited to their riding. They're all good if the helmet is well-built. I will always stand by my view that there's no helmet made better than Arai based on what I've seen. They always exceed all safety standards AND they are precision built safety gear with premium finishes that basically are built to last twice as long as most other helmets. It's entirely unnecessary for them to build helmets to that level since we're supposed to replace helmets every 5 years, but the truth is most people don't.

Ya, I guess with regular use the helmet can degrade. Much unlike leathers that can last long with care. Also I guess it’s good to invest in different styles of helmets and progressive safety upgrades every few years. What I love is arai actually sells different shapes without variations in relative safety. Plus some of their drudi designs are beautiful

@@mnmmercury1094 I totally agree and find the Arai helmets easiest to fit my head, although some people have told me it just doesn't work for them. Nothing is perfect I suppose.

does the RC helmet cope higher G than the non RC helmet?

Can you clarify what you’re asking? I’m not sure what you mean. Sorry.

    • @Proonur
      @Proonur  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

If what you mean is does a carbon fiber helmet protect better than the fiberglass one, then the answer is yes. The carbon fiber Arai helmets do allow less G force to transmit to the rider's head. Not a significant amount less though. The main advantage of carbon fiber is that it's lighter weight.
