    I am doing my best to view many of your videos ... I am trying to learn through your experience. I got sick and tired of my old diesel engine and I have completely repowered my 44foot sail boat to electric but have yet to build up the courage to leave the marina for anything more than a loop around the neighborhood ... Taking you lead I am planning a 26 mile trip with my 48 volt system at probably 2.5 to 3 knots knots augmented with Honda 2200eu generator ..and a likely beam reach wind of 5 to 7 knots .. I hope I make it . wish me luck.

      Wishing you a good sail. Are you just trying to test the range with the light winds? it’s nice to know the limitations and feel of the setup.

    Thanks for the vid. Looking at trying to repower a 40' ketch with electric. How big is your boat? What was the original gas/diesel engine size? What do you estimate the minimum KW motor would have to be to repower?

    What some folks fail to realize is you said you had last used the motor when you left the yard. So obviously in your situation it is a good fit. If you can sail and have a proper sail selection I can't see how you will never miss diesel. In a storm, I'd rather have prober sails. I'll bet the stories of diesels quilting at the most inopportune moment far exceed the stories of folks with no motor or engine at all. Sails have been around since 1300 BC and Internal combustion since 1860. So I guess we have to wait a few years before the verdict is out. LOL, Yes, we too have an electric motor. We like the way ya'll share time in front of the camera. Good Job

    I truely love your electric confursion same for sailing Alma, its only frightening when making a passage and due to a storm the sails can not used anymore at all, how does this bring you closer to land as in the night solar not charging and even a windmill does not pump enough energy to run all the way in electric! I can be wrong but a diesel can have a tank that can go up to 5 to 10 days of motoring. Any thoughts what your plan is in this situation? Hope this never happen ofcourse.

    It takes roughly double the power for every knot of speed. In other words, sowing down one knot will double your range. The real beauty of electric propulsion is motor sailing. For virtually no power you can spin the prop to match the speed of the boat through the water which can easily add another knot and with a minimum amount of power you can add 2-3 knots.

      RPM's are related to energy consumption by the inverse square law; for example: 3 times the RPM consumes 9 times the energy.

    Interesting stuff! Where did you find info about which motor voltage to aim for? 12/24/48 makes very different calculations and affects the whole set up. But to find competent info about which to choose isn’t easy… I definitely would go electric, no doubt. And I’m figuring to go with smaller but more panels. To minimise shading problems. To minimise windage problems. To minimise loss if one breaks down.

    • @eshootziscrs2868
      @eshootziscrs2868 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      He says 16 kw of lithium wired for 48 volts.
      The two solar panels where putting out 2-2.5 amps at 48 volts for approximately 100 watts of input power.

    • @keithpalle2307
      @keithpalle2307 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@eshootziscrs2868 I am pretty sure the 2 amps was in addition to what was running the motor so probably pulling in about 400 watts total? My guess is the are at least 250 watt panels.

Also, do you have anyway to charge the battery while under sail other then solar? If you do not any way to add wind and water?

The trip ended up taking 17 hours. They say that the mark of a good sailor is how well he (or she) can sail is how well they sail in light air. The heck with that. What is your gear reduction ratio from motor to prop? Also what is your propeller rpm at top speed ?

    • @BeauAndBrandy
      @BeauAndBrandy  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      gear reduction ratio is 1.8. This is the original prop, it was geared for the atomic 4 that we ripped out. Unfortunately we don't know, we don't have a way to monitor the speed.

    Quick note: you can use the coconut oil to get stains of the fiberglass on your boat. Plus it’s biodegradable.

    Enjoyed the VLOG. First time seeing you guys and checked out some of your earlier vids. What drew me was the Electric Motor range test....
    I wish you luck with that! I am NOT anti electric, anti solar, anti efficiency and/or anti anything that makes life easier for anyone else.
    What I am is "ANTI GREEN" (not the concept, but the fallacy). The hypocrisy in the cruising community about "Going Green" is absurd. A contemporary glass boats carbon foot print blows away any "Green" savings that anyone could ever achieve. I could rant a diatribe of things that give away the hypocrisy of "Going Green", but I won't.
    Please do not become hypocrites! Learn and understand the process that brought the retail product to you. Know that we are all consumers and we can only mitigate our individual impact. Having said that, the best we can hope for is to make some one else smile.

      We went electric bc we can’t stand the smell of diesel and the electric is WAY less maintenance ;) we are quite aware of the footprint we have. And yes...we are down for some SMILES 😁😁😁

    But you have reefs in the main you could get another knot , I can’t see what the exercise is about ,we would cover a 100 plus miles a day under motor if we need to , how far did you go , we would do 7 knots at a ltr an hour , I would be interested to for you to do a real test , motor for a day give us the results Remember solar panels don’t keep pumping 6 amps all day , battery resistance process to trickle stage once the battery’s are full , unless you have power usage all day will keep the resistance down ,ie when my battery’s are full All 6 of them , the panels a only supplying 1 amp most of the day ,the longest we have sailed with out using motor is 6 weeks and all battery’s settled at 79 percent with all normal running of the ship , so like to see how you go with a day of motoring good vid keep going

    Thanks for the info on your motor, if I got it right you are using
    300 watts or 6.5 amps @1.5 kts and 6,500 watts or 135 amps @ 5.5 kts? I was hoping to see a little more info maybe a mid range draw at maybe 3 or 4 Kts but I guess anyone that wants that info is going to have to pay for it on your Patrion page. Keep up the good work guys I really look forward to your videos.

      Does the math work for the range and speed?
      Are both parties using the same wattage available to reach these conclusions?
      He says 16 kw of lithium.
      But is that total battery capacity or useable capacity.
      Are we doing a 100% discharge to achieve these results?
      Is there a significant discharge curve below a certain percentage?
      77 nautical miles isn't bad until there is a head wind, current and rough seas.
      Your max speed of 5.5 is dropped by half on most boats. You need to run higher rpms, use more fuel to maintain headway and steering.
      That 77 miles becomes 35 miles in the same time span. But it's not that it's going to take you twice as long to make the 50 mile run to a harbor, you're not going to make it at all, you're out of power.
      Don't bother with the Jerry cans on deck, they don't fill batteries.
      I would like to know what you mean by min and Max?

    • @eshootziscrs2868
      @eshootziscrs2868 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Larry Brown not questioning your opinion but you understanding.
      I get it, sail boat. Most cruisers use their motors as much as sails but that's just not the point.
      I was strictly speaking of the range, min and Max of boat speed.
      I wasn't presenting a scenario that suggest what should or shouldn't be done, a preference or a option.
      So for you let's say they are de-masted , better, can we now move to the point
      Lol, jk. I'm not yet a fan of electric but I am interested in the possibilities and viability.
      I mean it's a sailboat, why does it have auxillary power at all?
      I think you could present an argument for that just as you could probably present an argument for needing power to make safe harbour. Let's even go medical emergency? Fast food craving? The why doesn't change the how.
