    Most impressive part of this video is her painting the engine room floor. An area that is out of sight , no one will ever see . But paint it she did because it's the right way to do things and they both take pride . It's nice to see people who wont settle for "ehh , good enough"

    I have a mixed 4 year old granddaughter an she loves watching you. Everytime she sees you on here. She says look Nana she is just like me an I look like her. She has my hair an i have hers.
    We try to teach her about how God made us all from the rainbow of colors. Like im cherokee Indian(RED) an her papaw is Italian(BROWN) an her dad (black cherokee)
    So i try to teach her we are all mixed.
    So keep up the good work. An always remember that YOU ARE INSPIRING YOUNGER GENERATION.. TO SAIL AN DO DIFFERENT THINGS....
    THANK YOU FOR WHAT YOU DO.

    Kika and Dan, I came across your channel...well, more like stumbled upon it while watching surf videos, which morphed into dive videos...to sailing and adventure videos...to Uma. I was immediately transfixed. Aside from the fantasy I have always had about "selling it all" and living off the grid, there is something so absolutely beautiful about YOUR partnership with each other. I binged a dozen Steps, joined the Uma Nation and have been vicariously living through your eyes. I am beyond the least handy person on the planet, but you make me want to build or fix something :). Love to connect one day. Until then, keep doing what you do.

    • @SailingUma
      @SailingUma  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, we’ve looked into them, but the still require “fuel” usually methanol of some sort to work and are about 2-3 times less efficient than a gas genset. If/when they come up with a system we can run sea water though, add a little electricity, and hydrogen comes out and can be stored, THEN we’ll look into it seriously.

When I saw you rocking the keel back and forth on a very early video - I said to myself, I’d not sail that boat across my bathtub! I was genuinely frightened for you both. In watching the saga through to this this most recent video, I’m so impressed with how you’ve turned Uma from flotsam not worthy of a slip, into a very sound, cleverly laid out, well thought out, ocean going home! Well done. I’m an “old guy” and I’ll offer this advice, enjoy each other every moment of every day. You’ve given yourselves a rare gift.

  • @michaelganshirt8795
    @michaelganshirt8795 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The Saildrive is a very neat and tidy solution, for certain. I love it and I really think that this is the way to go for propulsion. Replacing the big, dirty and noisy diesel with a quiet, small, clean electric motor seems like a complete no-brainer. The only issue that I run into in this scenario is the cost. These drives are really, really pricey. Being a sailor that is forced to work on a very small budget, I'm always shocked when I look up the cost of these systems. I was looking into electric outboards, recently, since my largest boat is a 22 footer and I was very disappointed to find that they are several times more expensive (not including batteries) than a similar 2 or 4 stroke gas outboard. Why are they SO freakin' expensive! Keep up the very good videos!

    • @SailingUma
      @SailingUma  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It doesn’t have to be pricey... Our first motor we built was $100 from a forklift motor that we found on eBay. We had that with the shaft drive for 5 years before we did this upgrade. If you ant more info, We have a page called electrobeke about our first system on our website sailinguma.com feel free to check it out :)

    I'm not a sailor, although I was in the US Navy on BIG ships for awhile. I don't own a boat but I love watching these videos and would love to afford a large sailboat and sail all over the place. While in the Navy I went around the world four times and visited many cool countries. I always loved meeting people from different cultures and life styles, I miss it for sure. Thanks for sharing. Best Wishes & Blessings. Keith Noneya

    Ever since my cat Peanut was tiny, I trained her to "come" whenever I whistle for her. Like a dog
    So... She always comes home or runs to me when I whistle.
    So... just now .... watching this vid, ...I forgot... and she was nicely sleeping in her snuggle spot when your video ended... THEN ...oops your sign-off whistling tune came on.
    ...Sure enough... my kitty woke up and came to see what I wanted.... lol
    Now she blames you for waking her up.

    Hey brother, I am happy to see that you used a respirator and other PPE for grinding fiberglass, but you should take similar precautions even when drilling/cutting or otherwise disturbing FG. The fine dust stays in the air much longer than normal dust and you know what it’ll do to your lungs. Stay safe and keep up the good work.

    As always wonderful and motivating video. All i can says is NOW OceanVolt FOR SURE owes you one (if not more) for the amazing demonstration of how easy it is to install their product. Props and thanks also to TOP SECRET! Question (although this might reveal my ignorance about fiberglass work), did you fill the holes left by the old skeg before glassing them, and if so, what did you fill them with? Thanks for everything.

    • @SailingUma
      @SailingUma  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Drilled out and filled the holes with epoxy from the inside and added a few more layers of glass on the inside too.

      Had the same question pop up but I assured myself that Dan MacGyver would leave no holes unfilled in the bottom of their home, especially after we could see how hefty this bottom is. Nice work as always, clean, precise and topped with a neat layer of paint. If I had a boat you could work on it any day!

    You talked about charging your batteries while sailing.....I'm guessing while off the prop turns while under sail and charges.....but if the prop folds up how does it spin? And is there an alternator built in, or will you be adding something else? I'd love it if you could chalkboard up how the electronics work.
    Also, will you be filling in the holes from the shaft and (bracket) and flashing up in the inside as well, or do you only have a thin veil over those spots? And will there be a bottom cover over the remaining skeg hole?
    I love you guys and all your videos, Uma has come so far, she is so very beautiful and efficient. I'm a retired disabled Vet living vicariously through your adventures!

      A motor is an generator, if the energy flows in the opposite direction. If the motor is an AC motor, you just need a switch mode power supply (SM PSU) that can work from DC to max frequency.
      After the SM PSU come the battery charging circuit. There are also some switching circuitry that make everything work together.
