He was a very good actor, his facial expressions were what made him so good, like he was really reacting to what the situation was. He suffered a terrible back injury earlier in his career and it eventually became debilitating but he was a voice later on for the less fortunate, even through his own pain he remembered those who were suffering, that’s a man! RIP Mr. York! 🙏

Thoroughly agreed, Matthew Ronson. You are absolutely correct. It thoroughly irks me that millennials take great pride in massacring the English language to suit their own needs. When called out on their errors, they are typically defensive and refuse to admit their mistakes. A trooper is an officer. A trouper is one who perseveres, such as an actor. The words are not interchangeable. Millennials cannot or will not proofread. This is either willful ignorance or possibly laziness. I opt for the former. They do seem to take great pride in their ignorance and will go to great lengths to defend it. Definitely not a sign of intelligence. I pride myself on my excellent command of the English language and the idiotic trend of these immature people to skip words, abbreviate instead of being able to formulate a complete sentence without butchering it sickens me. One can only imagine the type of spoiled, ignorant creatures they will spawn. Definitely not a pretty picture. Half of them have probably flunked out of high school, as they are basically only semi-literate at best. Pity as people used to take pride in their education. I fear for the future of this country. Guess they can always find work at Wendy's or Walmart.

@@sarahsilverlight6161 I blame the public education system, and that this is intended.
They want to cause problems in communication to increase confusion. It creates dependency and contributes to a lack of critical thinking-as intended.
It is frustrating when an adult has no concept that there is any difference between there, their or they're.
I think: Don't they ever read anything? Then add auto correct to that mix, which is too often auto-incorrect and more so when you have no concept of what one is actually saying, it is all phonetic to them.
      U no wut I mean?

Pretty sure that was predicted even before televisions themselves were invented. HG Well and Jules Verne, even L. Frank Baum. As soon as the first moving picture was unveiled people dreamed of combining it with radio and having it appear as if you were looking into another room, crystal clear. Truth is, we STILL haven’t accomplished what those authors imagined yet. HD doesn’t look as real as me looking out my window with the sun streaming through.

@@wellesradio True - Rod Serling did this several more times with his shows. Night Gallery in particular was stunning. 1971 "The Big Black Bag" - a doctor's bag from the future had what we would have called a Palm Pilot. It didn't have a telephone like a Smartphone of today, but it had a screen that you could scroll with. It was used in a scene to look up a medical condition and for medication. He also did "Camera Obscura" in 1971 that used one of those devices (1920 storyline) to portray future world events, and then used night vision green to denote a dark underworld - spooky. "Cold Air" 1971 even had an air conditioner as a supporting character lol.

The reason Dick York was better than Dick Sargent was York was a heterosexual and Sargent was gay. Director/Producer of "Bewitched" (and Elizabeth Montgomery's husband) initially wanted Sargent to play Darrin, but couldn't have him because he had agreed to play the male lead on the "Tammy Grimes Show" (which tanked). Of York, Asher said his onscreen kisses and relationship with "Samantha" was far more passionate. Agnes Moorehead, who played Endora, really liked York as an actor but hated Sargent whom she considered untalented. In my opinion both actors emphasized different aspects of the same character. York was a far better actor overall and the fact that he performed in constant pain for over five years is a true testament to his acting abilities.

Debra Helicke The fans loved Dick York but Elizabeth Montgomery loved Dick Sargent. When York was carried off to hospital Montgomery refused to visit him, and instead sent her husband to fire him. Throughout the rest of their lives York always had nothing but lovely things to say about Montgomery, but she always refused his phone calls and would not mention his name. The only Bewitched cast members who were friendly to him were Agnes Morehead and Erin Murphy. William Asher, Montogomery’s husband, and director of the show had compassion for York, and said kind words about him, but his wife didn’t want him on the show when he was first hired, and was very pleased that her friend, Sargent, eventually replaced York.

In response to someone’s comment that Dick York’s co-stars abandoned him at the end of his life, maybe yes at its very end; I don’t know. But he and Agnes Moorehead adored each other, and she kept tabs on him up until her own tragic death. She had a hard time going on with the series when his replacement actor, Mr. Sargent, was brought in. Agnes M and Dick Y apparently spent a lot of time on the set when not needed discussing acting and religion, interests they shared. They couldn’t have quite achieved that wonderful mutual animosity and mutual disgust in their roles if they hadn’t worked things out together very closely. Ms. Moorehead could never achieve quite the same thing with Mr. Sargent. I agree with the person who posted Sargent seemed only mean and indignant, even to his wife and children. Not a good fit. York seemed real, a loving family man, but trapped in a nightmarish dilemma. Moorehead, always a brilliant actress, realized the chemistry with Sargent wasn’t right.

That's true James, they abandoned him. I'm so glad Agnes didn't. She herself was threatened with firing on Dick Sargeant's first day when Agnes yelled at him the first day he was on the set and made him cry. Sargent went to his dressing room and told Elizabeth he was gonna leave the show. Elizabeth went to Agnes' dressing room and told her that Sargeant was there to stay and if she didn't like it, she could leave. Agnes stayed but those last three years of the show must've been uncomfortable for her. By that point, Elizabeth had become a producer on the show and had to the clout to do what she wanted.

Another tragic thing is that her Mom outlived her by 16 years, dying in 1990 at the age of 103, being born in 1887. She has Agnes at the age of 13 in 1900

Gould admitted she 'and others' had sent him money during some of his hardest times and Bernard Fox spoke warmly of his work with the homeless in his later years. I've no doubt Agnes Moorehead kept in touch with him too but she died very early on (1974). Interestingly, Herbie J. Pilato's accounts of interviewing Elizabeth Montgomery, Dick Sargent and David White in their later years reveals Montgomery had actually failed to keep in contact with them as well for about 15 years. She only re-established contact with them (largely thanks initially to the Pilato interviews) in the final decade of their respective lives.

I use to watch BeWitched Monday thru Friday every time I get home after school when I was a kid. Remember coming home from school one day and as the show was coming on, I noticed it wasn't Dick York. My heart just dropped and I really didn't care to much about coming home from school to watch it. After a few months, it was the black and white version of BeWitched and it was back to Dick York. I was happy to see him but it wasn't in color like I first remembering seeing the show for the first time. So I was ok by it and couldn't wait to get home from school to watch BeWitched again.

"Such a tragedy how one on set accident altered his entire life..."
If you're referring to his back injury in 1959, it wasn't really that on-set accident that ended his time on 'Bewitched' -- he had been acting around that for more than a decade, and the 'Bewitched' crew built an off-set support for him to lean on between takes, and so forth. What ended 'Bewitched' was an illness that left him with chills and a fever, and he passed out and fell. That could have happened even if it weren't for his back injury, though the back pain and the painkiller addiction were probably factors that caused his fall to be the final straw. He stayed out of the limelight for 18 years, battling his pain-killer addiction, then did two guest appearances on TV shows inn1983 and '84, before retiring from acting completely and spending his last years running a charity.

Maybe he had a hard time playing Samanthas husband because he was Gay. It crossed my mind. This episode was rewritten into "Daddy Does His Thing" (most of which consisted of Darrin being a mule after the necessary rewrite due to York's seizure- Darrin was only supposed to be a mule briefly, and the backwards film looked like filler to kill time and pad out the episode). During filming in January 1969, it was originally supposed to be a two-parter called "Samantha's Surprise," presumably where Samantha tells Darrin she's pregnant again. That's why in this episode she says she has a surprise "for both of us."
Instead, she just has to tell "him" over the phone in "Samantha's Good News" filmed later. Much of this two-parter script was later reused with Dick Sargent as "Daddy Comes for a Visit/Darrin the Warlock." The mule jokes were changed to dog jokes. It contains the scene with Maurice and Darrin on scaffolding, which is where York had his seizure.

Interesting trivia...Dick Sargent was actually the original choice by producer/director William Asher (and to a certain extent, his wife and star of the show Elizabeth Montgomery) for Darrin all along. While it is true that Sargent was considered initially for the show, but was under contract to another studio at the time and thus was unavailable to accept the role, he was considered for the role back when production of the show was under different people and was drastically different (for starters, it was considering Tammy Grimes for the main female role, named Cassandra; Grimes and Sargent starred in The Tammy Grimes Show a couple of years later instead). When that project fell apart and then landed on Asher and Montgomery, Dick York was always their first pick. Reportedly, Sargent and Elizabeth Montgomery had been good friends prior to the show's start, which may have led to the mistaken rumors.

Dick York never completed this episode, which probably explains the silly recap of the earlier scene on the wall. They had to fill time because York was in the hospital and never filmed the rest of his scenes. And Samantha and her father are alone in their shot, without Darrin. They must have filmed their bit after York had departed, giving reactions to a scene that he had filmed earlier, which was then all edited together. Maurice Evans (Daddy) was actually a very experienced stage actor who specialized in performing Shakespeare’s plays in real life, so he gets to recite some of those lines at the end of this scene. Of course he gets to claim that Shakespeare himself spoke to him, since as a warlock he’s immortal and was alive centuries ago.

He also played “Hutch” in “Rosemary’s Baby”, but he wasn’t a warlock in that. Instead, he was a victim of a curse put on him by a coven of Satanists who were definitely not comedic.

So sad what happened to Dick York, he tried but he simply couldn't get over his worsening back muscle injuries. Like for even the endless amount of painkillers and drugs going through him to no longer be able to keep him from doing simple things like stand and walk on tv sets it must have been horrible.

How sad, I just watched this about two hours ago. He was such a wonderful actor and back then I liked Dick Sargent better just because he didn't seem to get as angry at Samantha as Dick York did. But I'm watching the series again and the earlier episodes are definitely the best.

Yes! I wondered if anyone else felt this way. Dick York's Darrin kinda scared me when I was little because he was always yelling. I preferred the later ones back then for that reason and also I preferred the ones in color haha. As an adult, I prefer him to Dick Sargent who just seems kinda bland.

Dick York was the perfect individual for the character of Samantha's husband. When Dick Sargent awkwardly came on board he lacked the panache and charisma as Dick York possessed. I found him to be boring and dull and really not a very talented actor. When Mr. York left I think that show should have shut down when it was ahead.

I loved Dick York. He was brilliantly cast & played his role to perfection. The show was not nearly as fun & only moderately enjoyable after his sad (& far too early) departure. Im actually surprised the series lasted as long as it did after "Sam's" BEST husband left the show. Lets put it this way: Dick Sargent was to Dick York what the SECOND Gladys Kravitz was to the first...

"You've picked a lemon in the garden of love!" Ha ha ha! I could not agree more about Darrin.
However, Dick York was a gem of an actor and sorely missed. His exaggerated facial expressions and indignation was the stuff of comedy. So sad about his back which got injured on a set while filming. However, he smoked 3 packs of cigarettes a day and the emphysema killed him at a very young age of 63.

Sad that Elizabeth Montgomery never missed Dick York or showed any sympathy towards his suffering, but she only had nice things to say about Dick Sargent, who, as an actor, was inferior to Dick York in every way...York loved Montgomery--even before "Bewitched". With Montgomery married to the show's director, William Asher, (the third of her four marriages) it seems they were both more comfortable with a gay man playing Darrin...Before the show ended, she fell in love with another director of "Bewitched": Richard Michaels. This affair ended her marriage and the series. Apparently, Montgomery failed continuously to be loyal to anyone (until she was diagnosed with cancer), and she never bothered to speak with Dick York after he left the set on his last day to go to the hospital. Given her history, it's difficult not to think of Montgomery as being anything other than a selfish, disloyal, untrustworthy, trampy ingrate. No wonder she was so convincing as Lizzie Borden (a distant relative).

    • @stanloretta92
      @stanloretta92 3 ปีที่แล้ว

She did have nice things to say about York (and she called it "a shame" what happened in the real version of one of the interviews posted on TH-cam), but that part was selectively edited out of "Dan Whit"'s TH-cam videos that seem to have some weird anti-Dick York agenda or something, but also end up making Elizabeth Montgomery look less compassionate than she was due to said edits. William Asher preferred Dick York (who he said was "always his first choice") as Darrin, as he didn't feel Sargent was "as effective." The cast and crew, including Liz and Bill, sent York a get-well card in the hospital, which his son Chris York shared.
