- It's time for Darrin (Dick York) to meet his mother-in-law, Endora (Agnes Moorehead)! How bad can having a witch for a mother-in-law be?
From Season 1, Episode 4 - Darrin returns home for his first meeting with Endora. Endora and Darrin soon engage in a heated argument about their opposing viewpoints on life. Endora threatens to turn Darrin into an artichoke. Later Samantha expresses her love for Darrin by announcing that if Endora had done so, she would also have turned herself into an artichoke.

"what is normal to you, young man, is to us, asinine." Agnes Moorehead's delivery, especially in this scene from entrance to dramatic exit, shows what a truly brilliant actress she was.
And she is also correct.
She was a great actress. I used to listen to a classic radio station on satellite radio and she was on there alot on different dramatic shows. She was amazing.

As I got older and watched this show in reruns years later I came to realize Endora was right. Even though Darrin didn't know Samantha was a witch at first once she told him he had a choice to either divorce her or stay married to her. He chose to stay married but refused to let her be who she was which was totally selfish and was the reason Endora and rest of the family gave him so many problems.
I agree! Though Andora didn't like that he was a mortal from the beginning....she picked a fight with him and he immaturely battled with her.
I totally agree that Endora was right. I would feel the same way if my daughter was treated like that. Pure male ego !!
Now I can see why Darrin didn't want her to do magic. If anyone caught on they'd try to burn Samantha to a stake.
Major Nelson never ordered Jeanie not to use her powers and he never insulted her for what she was. He only told her to be discreet when she used them so that no one would catch on that she was a genie. Darren was kind of a prejudiced male chauvinist.

Obviously, the writers and the cast understood the implications. More than a few viewers understood it too.
That was the point of the show: having to hide who you are in a bigoted society.

What Samantha does suppress is her PRIVILEGE, all of her witch/warlock relatives are depicted as aristocratic (and vaguely Euro), and the point of her not gaining advantages through witchcraft is a stand-in for not accepting financial help from one's wealthy family and instead making it on one's own with one's spouse. The ONLY reason we sympathize with the mostly boorish Darrin is that he wants career success by way of hard work vs spells cast, i.e. middle class work ethic vs the idle life of extravagant wealth.
h d At the time that was probably true, however it is amazing how things take on a new meaning as times change. That said, there was an episode where Samantha actually asked Darren to Drop an account with the firm. The account was a candy company that wanted a mascot that looks like the ugly old witch hag. I liked that episode because it felt like it was the first time that Darren had stood up for Samantha‘s identity and fully embrace the fact that he had married a witch.
"So from now on watch your step young man. Mother is watching you." A rather ominous statement considering how family friendly this show was.
Agnes Moorehead was perfectly cast in this role. Her acting skills were breathtaking!
steven franks--- Her acting is so good you would think that her and Dick York hated each other but when the cameras were off, they were the best of friends.
Check out her performance in The Invaders from The Twilight Zone. She never speaks a word, and she carries the whole episode almost single-handedly.

Why can’t people just watch and have a good laugh? Everything has to be analyzed through some feminist lens. It was a freaking show. Way better than a lot of the hot garbage in TV today.
I loved Endora too, and it was a sign of the times, but if Darwood :) would have known before the wedding that Sam was a witch, he may not have married her. He didn't find out until their honeymoon when she told him and she knew marrying him would have complications.

Agnes Moorehead put on an acting masterclass in that scene. Amazing performance in a somewhat silly (the premise) sitcom. This show was very well done.
01FamilyJewels: “Careful young man or you’ll driving an artichoke.” As a show, it was a very plausible concept that lasted eight seasons. Agnes Moorhead, in addition to being very well educated (BA, MFA Eng. Lit) provided the tartness to keep BBC this from being sappy although it would have been better to state that Sam came from a parallel universe and was visiting Earth when she met Durwood, I mean Darrin. The commercial film should have been much better and yes, about halfway through, the actor playing Darrin should have been replaced by someone similar.
I GOT scared of Endora! Excellent acting! Now that is how a witch is supposed to be! Loved her outfit and Sam’s too. Just gorgeous fashion!
In real life Agnes Moorhead & Dick York were best of friends and when Dick York had to leave the show due to health problems, Agnes Moorhead had an emotionally hard time continuing to play Endora.
Agnes never liked Dick Sergeant or at least just tolerated him. She was very upset they let Dick York go and continued to communicate with York even after he was canned.

Great, show. Did you know that if Agnes Morehead was still alive, she would be 120, years old. Dick Wanted to date , Elizabeth Montgomery, but , she didn't nothing to do with him. She said I don't think so. Paul Lynne , was also on it. He was Sam's Uncle, he made a fool out of Darren. There was also a actress, on the show, she was a real goofball , funny. , Very funny. Can't remember her stage name. But, it was a great show,.
My gods, her and York must have had so much fun with the by play. I think I know what all those tiny little sly grins of Endora's were about in the early episodes, lol.

I love the extreme eye makeup Endora wore on the show. She looked great!
Agnes Moorehead was wonderful. Stage, screen, Orson Welles' Mercury Theatre company, she never put a foot wrong in any performance. And then she was given this part, and nobody else could have challenged her for it. One of the all-time greats. Bless her.

It reminds me of playing minecraft. You can switch to creative mode and get exactly what you want immediately or you can stay in survival mode and get the satisfaction of gradually finding and making what you need yourself.
@CJ DUNROVIN Exactly, the whole premise of the show, everything it centers on is that if they live a life like other "mortals" they have to keep the others from finding out. If they wanted to use her powers they wouldn't be living like the others at all. Why are so many people analyzing this so much? LOL It's simple. Use your powers, get discovered, no show. All these armchair psychologists make me smile.

@@georgealderson4424 You and I would agree on this completely. Some people today, in my opinion too many, politicize everything, read things into everything and project far too much. It is especially wrong to do this when looking at things from the past whether it be a t.v. sitcom like Bewitched, or anything else. I am old enough to recall the days when Bewtiched was on television, and not in reruns! I think it is a lot of younger people who make the mistake of analyzing too much. It was/is a very humorous, light hearted look at a fantasy world. Many people are losing the ability to laugh these days.
Endora is a modern woman even for today's standards, you can see how someone behave when he/she has control of his/her life. True independence comes from being yourself and control over your life. cliché but so true. The lines of Endora are timeless.

In Al Hine's 1965 Dell paperback novel (adapted from several early scripts), he writes that Samantha's {and Endora's} last name is "Dobson". He also included the "you'll never be able to pronounce it" line, too.
In a later episode, she said her last name was Waters.
That was really a touching moment at the door when they first see each other.
If you watch some of the early episodes of the series, like this one, there were some VERY powerful messages being delivered.
I always liked it when she called him Derwood.

Gotta hand it to them! The special effects are awesome ! No green screen, no CG, no Photoshop, just hours of tough work moving objects about, blowing stuff, making real smoke, etc etc etc.
This show, according to Erin Murphy, was one of the first shows to use green screen.
no green screen? the original parent trap used green screen, so surely they used it here.
I think this is a little masterpiece where the author has harmoniously transferred conflict to all characters like a dance. It's brilliant. RIP to all 3 so talented actors... and thank you for all wonderful hours watching you on tv when i was a child.

I loved her in Caged, where she was a superintendent @ a woman's prison.She was the opposite of Endora, which just shows how superb her acting skills were.

It wasn't until I watched the show again as an adult that I saw how sexist it was! Samantha didn't give up magic so that she could immerse herself voluntarily in Darrin's world. She gave it up because he insisted and believed that he had every right to do so. Endora is right!
Some of the effects in the earlier episodes were actually quite good, better than some later ones

I think Endora only even called him "Darren" when Maurice and the Council of Warlocks threatened to take her powers away from her and she needed him as a character reference.
And also when darren allowed Samantha to use magic! It was funny af when she said his name right and was so happy for him 😂

its so sad that he never realized that magic is such a big part of who she is and that you cant want her to be herself without magic.
there are a number of occasions where Sam takes pride in fulfilling mundane household tasks without resorting to witchcrat ie: "its more fun to do it the mortal way"
There's one episode, when he is given powers to make her life easier because he is sick, when he does realize. Likely toward the end of his time of the show. They often had him lying down because he had a back injury.

It's been colorized you can tell by the flat color palate. What you are seeing is not what it really looked like at all. Nitpicky I know and most people don't care.

My favorite part of this episode was when Darrin said that Samantha was more friendlier on their first date, and Endora mouths Samantha in shock.

actually gave me chills when she whipped her hand up and said 'YOUNG MAN!' I like her in this scene as opposed to later scenes when she was there simply to cause mischief.
I get teary-eyed over the scene when she & Darrin actually had a passing moment in the hospital when Tabitha was born.

Folks are complaining about Darrin not wanting Samantha to use her powers .... the actual fact is that she did anyway, in just about every episode.
What I got out of BEWITCHED as a kid, was that family may try to stifle you, but your natural talents will shine through every time anyway.
If you watch all the seasons, Darrin does eventually give in and admit a few times that he was probably wrong with his initial feeling about her powers.

Good take on it, and correct. These people complaining are fixated for their own reasons, on a tiny aspect of a sitcom that ran for many seasons. The show simply would not have worked if Samantha and Darrin were not trying to keep everyone from finding out about her being a witch. So many funny things and silly misunderstandings happened around that and kept the show popular.
I have to agree with Mother. Darin, a lot of things could be avoided if you just let Samantha be herself. But like someone said, we wouldn't have a show. 😉

in the first ep, he says to the audience a husband has to compromise. Not exact quote, but he said something similar. The only person comprising was Sam. Darrin wasn’t giving up anything.
I was a BIG fan of this show when I was a kid. I always thought that Endora was right though. Darin was a tyrant in his thinking when it came to Samantha's "powers". All these years later it is even more apparent that the Philosophy of "Different is BAD" is so much a part of the Human Condition.
I love that Dick York and Agnes Moorehead were very close friends in real life and adored each other. It makes watching their contentious on screen relationship even more enjoyable.
(If it were me, I'd never want to be on Endora's bad side... but without such tension, you don't have the same enjoyable show.)
This show is SO good!
The script writers merely followed what was then the acceptable social norms. Husband was the head of the house and women were expected to comply, quit work and be housewives and mothers, totally relying on their husbands to support them. Even their identity was suppressed and she became Mrs DARRIN Stevens. Ironically, the script called for Samantha's parents to be quite liberated and enjoy their own flamboyant lifestyles, separately.
Not quite. My mother never took my father's last name, always worked, and for most of her working life earned more than my father. There's no excuse for misogyny, in any era. They did it here to make a point that hasn't aged well.
The ability to question social norms is the difference between being a human being and being a trained monkey that looks like one.

Endora has a protective streak and has a point.
It's funny as an adult watching this it really is interesting to see how unhealthy their relationship really was (despite the eccentricity of the base plot).
Their relationship was healthy. They both detested each other and it was out in the open. What was unhealthy is Samantha continuing to appease Darren by limiting her own powers. Insecure little man. Detestable!

For me the moral of the show, is that don't change and forego your ambitions, and talents for the sake of someone. God had given us gifts and talents, which we are thankful. Once you downplay for others m you'll regret after. Be your self.
Endora was right about everything. Darrin was a "chowder" head, and Samantha was wasting her life and her abilities on playing at being a simple housewife. She was the only character who made sense to me.
Apparently, Tabitha inherited her mother's genetic copy that allows her to have powers, and long life, even when Darrin is mortal.
It shows what a good actress the lady who played Endora was (Agnes Moorehead I think) as apparently in reality she and Dick York were very close.
It was an excellent series and entertaining for young and old eg me as a child and an old man!

This is the first season when the writing was superb and note how the vocabulary is of the best quality as opposed to the dumbing down for the text generation and the thick as a brick set. Nicely acted with great style!
I guess you're right but I always loved the whole series, even today, so many years later. Somehow it's refreshing.
I don't think Endora really hated mortals, she just found Darrin sanctimonious. Ironically Darrin's own father would make a fuss over Endora every time he visited and Endora would gush like a school girl.

Alright, to me Darrin is by far my favourite character of the show (the 1st one at least). I really identify myself to him. But why do so many people always say "what a jerk, he shouldn't restrain Samantha's powers and let her be who she is" or some other stuff about their relationship and the way Darrin treats her.
Well first thing, he likes who she truly is as when Samantha asks him in an episode if he would prefer her with or without her powers, he says he prefer her the way she is(with her powers).
Then Samantha AGREES not to use witchcraft in the first place, if she was disatisfied with the brohibition of witchcraft she could've leave Darrin at any moment.
An come on, be in Darrin's shoes for a second, you live a normal life and then out of nowhere you are circled by witches, for real this wouldn't be something very amusing at first, even if some people wish they exist(at least in the form they are presented in the show) I'll bet those same people would be freaked out for a minute upon seeing actual witchcraft for the 1st time.
If Darrin fully accepts Samantha to use her power the show would probably be less interesting (there might even not be any show as Darrin would probably get along a lot better with Endora) and he even did in one of the 1st seasons episodes where he breaks his leg, and what did Samantha do? She got back in time because she didn't like this version of Darrin.
So Darrin might be this narrow-minded jerk who "rejects" Samantha's true identity for most people, but I personaly know that Samantha loves Darrin just the way he is and if you think twice about it, Darrin got his reasons to behave the way he does with witches, he just never explicits it.
And it's not like, aside from Samantha, Aunt Clara and a select few other witches, Darrin was disliked from the get go because he simply was a mortal, he tried to get along with Endora, but she was the one who started their never-ending fight, look at his face when he first saw her, he was so exited to meet her.
Most witches seen in the show are really narrow minded too, thinking that all men are the same, each more stupid than the other. Darrin was judged and sentenced even before he had a chance to prove himself.
So I say it, I pity Darrin ! He made mistakes alright, he isn't perfect (of course), but he isn't any way worse than Samantha or Endora, he has his own vision of life, and that's respectable, it's just that it's clashing with most witches' vision of life, and he (for the most amount of the time) doesn't deserve what happens to him during the show(even if it's funny).
See, you get it, you aren't blinded by man haters. And I gag everything they quote Endora like they are one in the same, calling him Derwood.
